Spectroscopic Studies of a Phosphonium Ionic Liquid in Supercritical CO2. CHEMENGINEERING 2020. [DOI: 10.3390/chemengineering4020020] [Citation(s) in RCA: 0] [Impact Index Per Article: 0] [Reference Citation Analysis] [Abstract] [Track Full Text] [Subscribe] [Scholar Register] [Indexed: 11/16/2022]
Abstract
Fluorescence spectroscopy was used to study a solution comprised of coumarin 153 (C153)+ trihexyltetradecylphosphonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([P6,6,6,14]+ [Tf2N]−)+ supercritical CO2 (scCO2). We compare the spectroscopy of C153 in neat scCO2 to that of C153/scCO2 with the addition of ionic liquid (IL). Excitation and emission peak frequencies of C153 in scCO2 and in IL/scCO2 diverged at reduced densities (ρr = ρ/ρc) below the CO2 critical density. At low fluid density, spectral changes in the IL/scCO2 solutions showed evidence that C153 experiences a very different microenvironment—one that is unlike neat scCO2. The data show that the presence of IL clearly influences the C153 excitation and emission profiles. Excitation was broadened and red shifted by >2000 cm−1 and the presence of an additional low-energy emission component that was red shifted by ~3000 cm−1 was clearly visible and not observed in neat scCO2. The solution heterogeneity was controlled by changing the scCO2 density and at high fluid density, both the excitation and emission spectra were more similar to those in neat scCO2. Steady-state anisotropy also showed that at low fluid density, the C153 emission was significantly polarized. Aggregation of C153 has been reported in the literature and this led us to hypothesize the possibility that C153 dimer (aggregation) formation may be occurring in scCO2. Another possible explanation is that dye–IL aggregates may dissolve into the scCO2 phase due to C153 acting as a “co-solvent” for the IL. Time-resolved intensity decay measurements yielded only slightly non-exponential decays with accompanying time constants of ~3–4 ns that were significantly shorter than the 5–6 ns time constants in neat scCO2, which are suggestive of C153–IL interactions. However, these data did not conclusively support dimer formation. Pre-exponential factors of the time constants showed that almost all of the emission was due to monomeric C153.

Abstract
In this perspective, we present an overview of the determination of excited-state properties of "real-life" dyes, and notably of their optical absorption and emission spectra, performed during the last decade with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT). We discuss the results obtained with both vertical and adiabatic (vibronic) approximations, choosing relevant examples for several series of dyes. These examples include reproducing absorption wavelengths of numerous families of coloured molecules, understanding the specific band shape of amino-anthraquinones, optimising the properties of dyes used in solar cells, mimicking the fluorescence wavelengths of fluorescent brighteners and BODIPY dyes, studying optically active biomolecules and photo-induced proton transfer, as well as improving the properties of photochromes.

Abstract
Equilibrium and dynamical characteristics pertaining to the solvation of the fluorescent probe Coumarin 480 within different confining environments are investigated using molecular dynamics simulations. Three kinds of confining systems are examined: (i) the cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB)/isooctane/1-hexanol/water; cationic inverse micelle (IM) (ii) a CTAB/water direct micelle (DM), and (iii) a silica-surfactant nanocomposite, comprising a cylindrical silica pore (SP) containing small amounts of water and CTAB species adsorbed at the pore walls. The solvation structures in the three environments differ at a qualitative level: an exchange between bulk- and interface-like solvation states was found in the IM, whereas in the DM, the solvation states of the probe are characterized by its embedding at the interface, trapped among the surfactant heads and tails. Within the SP structure, the coumarin exhibits alternations between internal and interfacial solvation states that occur on a ∼20 ns time scale and operate via 90° rotations of its molecular plane. The solvation responses of the environment following a vertical excitation of the probe are also investigated. Solvation times resulted between 2 and 1000 times longer than those found in bulk water, with a fast-to-slow trend IM→DM→SP, which can be interpreted in terms of the solvation structures that prevail in each case.

Abstract
Using TD-DFT, we performed simulations of the adiabatic energies of 40 fluorescent molecules for which the experimental 0-0 energies in condensed phase are available. We used six hybrid functionals (B3LYP, PBE0, M06, M06-2X, CAM-B3LYP, and LC-PBE) that have been shown to provide accurate transition energies in previous TD-DFT assessments, selected two diffuse-containing basis sets, and applied the most recent models for estimating bulk solvation effects. In each case, the correction arising from the difference of zero-point vibrational energies between the ground and the excited states has been consistently determined. Basis set effects have also been carefully studied. It turned out that PBE0 and M06 are the most effective functionals in terms of average deviation (mean absolute error of 0.22-0.23 eV). However, both the M06-2X global hybrid that contains more exact exchange and the CAM-B3LYP range-separated hybrid significantly improve the consistency of the prediction for a relatively negligible degradation of the average error. In addition, we assessed (1) the cross-structure/spectra relationships, (2) the importance of solvent effects, and (3) the differences between adiabatic and vertical energies.

Abstract
Using time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and the polarizable continuum model, we have computed the electronic transitions of a large panel of coumarin dyes in their enol, keto, cationic, and anionic forms. Several processes have been studied: absorption, fluorescence, 0-0 phosphorescence, and triplet-triplet excitations. For each process, detailed comparison with experimental data has been carried out. Using the PBE06-31+G(d) scheme, it turns out that for a given electronic transition the experimental shifts resulting from the substitution of the coumarin core are nicely reproduced. Indeed, once a simple statistical correction is applied, the mean absolute errors on the absorption and fluorescence wavelengths are limited to 8 nm (0.09 eV) and 9 nm (0.07 eV), respectively. A valuable correlation between the experimental and theoretical phosphorescence auxochromic displacements has also been unravelled. The differences between the wavelengths of the various electronic processes of a given dye tend to be fairly predicted, especially for the fluorescence-phosphoresence shifts that are strongly overestimated by TD-DFT.

Abstract
The values of steady-state solvatochromic Stokes shifts (SS) in absorption/emission electronic spectra of organic chromophores are studied theoretically in the framework of the Hush-Marcus model. Charge distributions for chromophore solutes in their S0 and S1 states are found by means of conventional quantum-chemical methods combined with the continuum PCM approach for treating solvation effects. The solvent reorganization energies, which are expected to correlate with the solvent-induced part of 1/2 SS, are found in a molecular dynamics (MD) simulation which invokes a novel method for separation of the inertial piece of the electrostatic response (Vener, et al. J. Phys. Chem. B 2006, 110, 14950). Computations, performed in two solvents (acetonitrile and benzene), consider three organic dyes: coumarin 153 as a benchmark system and two other chromophores, for which experimental spectra are also reported. The results are found to be in reasonable agreement with the experiment. A consistent treatment of nonlinear effect in the solvent response, promoted by the polarizability of solutes and contributing to the solvent reorganization energies (Ingrosso, et al. J. Phys. Chem. B 2005, 109, 3553), improves the results of computations.

Abstract
We report one- and two-photon absorption excitation energies and cross sections for a series of 7-aminocoumarins using time-dependent density functional theory with various basis sets and functionals, including exchange-correlation functionals using the Coulomb-attenuating method, to evaluate their performance in the gas phase and in solvents. Except for the results of one functional, the computed one-photon excitation energies and transition dipole moments are in good agreement with experiment. The range of errors obtained from various functionals is discussed in detail. The relationship of donor and acceptor groups with the one- and two-photon resonances and intensities is also discussed.

Abstract
Computer simulation results are presented for an atomistic pair potential model of 1,4-dioxane which takes into account molecular flexibility. The model has been conceived to be applied to the study of solvatochromism and solvation dynamics in the presence of the polar probe coumarin C153. Computer simulations on the pure liquid have produced thermodynamical, structural, and dynamical data in good agreement with available experimental measures. This constitutes a valuable test of the 1,4-dioxane all-atom model employed. The study of solute-solvent interactions for C153 in 1,4-dioxane has been motivated by the aim of casting light, through simulations, on the interesting experimental findings according to which such a solvent behaves as a "polar" solvent with respect to dynamic solvation properties. Molecular dynamics is particularly suitable to model the process and provides an interpretation of the so-called "dioxane anomaly". An investigation of the structure of the solvation shell and of the dynamics of solvation is presented and discussed. In particular, the satisfactory accordance between simulated and experimental solvation response implies that the simulations give a reliable description of both solute and solvent at a molecular level and reinforces the idea that the explicit inclusion of discrete solvent molecules is needed for a realistic treatment of solvation phenomena in which the local structure of the liquid plays a key role.

Abstract
Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations of a probe solute (coumarin C153) in supercritical fluoroform are used to study time-dependent solute-solvent interactions. We study the dynamics of solvent reorganization in response to electronic excitation of C153 at a temperature of 1.03 T(c) (the critical temperature) and a series of densities above and below the critical density. Simulations of a two-site and five-site models of fluoroform are presented and compared. The time-dependent solvation response after solute electronic excitation is studied in the two cases, and the five-site results present an earlier onset of exponential decay that is closer to what is expected to be the experimental response. This is confirmed by comparison to experiment. In addition to obtaining the solvation response from nonequilibrium MD trajectories, approximate solvation responses were obtained from equilibrium time correlations of the fluctuations in the solvation energy change in the presence of ground- and excited-state solutes. For the five-site model, the equilibrium excited-state response shows stronger density dependence than the ground-state one. The nonequilibrium response appears to have an intermediate decay rate between the two equilibrium functions. The solute-partial-charge-solvent-induced-dipole interaction was also taken into account by means of a perturbative approach, which improved the agreement with experimental measurements available at densities corresponding to 1.4-1.6 rho(c) (where rho(c) the critical density). From the comparison between the two models, it is possible to conclude that an atomistic description is necessary for correctly representing the portion of solvation dynamics that is related to reorientation. This consideration is supported by providing results for orientational time correlation functions and by comparing the correlation times with the experimental ones.
