Abstract
N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) analogues of Wittig hydrocarbon, [(NHC)(Stil)(NHC)] (3a-c) (NHC = SIPr (1a) = C[N(Dipp)CH2]2, Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3; IPr (1b) = C[N(Dipp)CH]2; Me-IPr (1c) = C[N(Dipp)CMe]2 and Stil = C6H4CHCHC6H4) have been reported as crystalline solids. 3a-c are prepared by two-electron reductions of the corresponding bis-1,3-imidazoli(ni)um bromides [(NHC)(Stil)NHC)](Br)2 (2a-c) with KC8 in >94 % yields. 2a-c are accessible by the nickel catalyzed direct C-C coupling of NHCs (1a-c) with (E)-4,4'-dibromostilbene. One-electron oxidation of 3a,b yields the corresponding radical cations [(NHC)(Stil)NHC)]B(C6F5)4 4a,b. All compounds have been characterized by UV-Vis/NMR/EPR spectroscopy as well as 2a, 3a, and 3b by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The electronic structures of representative systems have been analyzed by quantum chemical calculations.

Abstract
In the ongoing pursuit of novel and efficient NLO materials, the potential of alkali metal-doped {6}cycloparaphenylene ({6}CPP) and methylene bridged {6} cycloparaphenylene (MB{6}CPP) nanohoops as excellent NLO candidates has been explored. The geometric, electronic, linear, and nonlinear optical properties of designed systems have been investigated theoretically. All the nanohoops demonstrated thermodynamic stability, with remarkable interaction energies reaching up to -1.39 eV (-0.0511 au). Notably, the introduction of alkali metals led to a significant reduction in the HOMO-LUMO energy gaps, with values as low as 2.92 eV, compared to 6.80 eV and 6.06 eV for undoped {6}CPP and MB{6}CPP, respectively. Moreover, the alkali metal-doped nanohoops exhibited exceptional NLO response, with the K@r6-{6}CPP complex achieving the highest first hyperpolarizability of 56,221.7 × 10-30 esu. Additionally, the frequency-dependent first hyperpolarizability values are also computed at two commonly used wavelengths of 1550 nm and 1907 nm, respectively. These findings highlight the potential of designed nanohoops as promising candidates for advanced NLO materials with high-tech applications.

Abstract
Open-shell benzenoid polycyclic hydrocarbons (BPHs) are promising materials for future quantum applications. However, the search for and realization of open-shell BPHs with desired properties is a challenging task due to the gigantic chemical space of BPHs, requiring new strategies for both theoretical understanding and experimental advancement. In this work, by building a structure database of BPHs through graphical enumeration, performing data-driven analysis, and combining tight-binding and mean-field Hubbard calculations, we discovered that the number of the internal vertices of the BPH graphs is closely correlated to their open-shell characters. We further established a simple rule, the triangle counting rule, to predict the magnetic ground states of BPHs. These findings not only provide a database of open-shell BPHs, but also extend the well-known Lieb's theorem and Ovchinnikov's rule and provide a straightforward method for designing open-shell carbon nanostructures. These insights may aid in the exploration of emerging quantum phases and the development of magnetic carbon materials for technology applications.

Abstract
The scope of Bergman cyclization is expanded computationally by exploring the cyclization in inorganic B, N substituted derivative. This substitution has introduced polarity into the transition state, which resulted in dramatic lowering of the activation barrier. Natural charge distribution throughout the reaction profile has ascertained this hypothesis. Single B and N atom substitution at 1 and 6 terminal positions lowers the activation barrier by almost half of the original value which becomes even lower in the complete B, N analogue. The parent Bergman and single B, N substituted products were characterized by significant biradical character while the complete B, N substituted analogue was characterized by significant zwitterionic character. Reduction in electron delocalization is also observed in the complete B, N substituted analogue.

Abstract
The first 1,4-distibabenzene-1,4-diide compound [(ADC)Sb]2 (5) based on an anionic dicarbene (ADC) (ADC=PhC{N(Dipp)C}2 , Dipp=2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 ) is reported as a bordeaux-red solid. Compound 5, featuring a central six-membered C4 Sb2 ring with formally SbI atoms may be regarded as a base-stabilized cyclic bis-stibinidene in which each of the Sb atoms bears two lone-pairs of electrons. 5 undergoes 2 e-oxidation with Ph3 C[B(C6 F5 )4 ] to afford [(ADC)Sb]2 [B(C6 F5 )4 ]2 (6) as a brick-red solid. Each of the Sb atoms of 6 has an unpaired electron and a lone-pair. The broken-symmetry open-shell singlet diradical solution for (6)2+ is calculated to be 2.13 kcal mol-1 more stable than the closed-shell singlet. The diradical character of (6)2+ according to SS-CASSCF (state-specific complete active space self-consistent field) and UHF (unrestricted Hartree-Fock) methods amounts to 36 % and 39 %, respectively. Treatments of 6 with (PhE)2 yield [(ADC)Sb(EPh)]2 [B(C6 F5 )4 ]2 (7-E) (E=S or Se). Reaction of 5 with (cod)Mo(CO)4 affords [(ADC)Sb]2 Mo(CO)4 (8).

Abstract
This work introduces an approach to uncoupling electrons via maximum utilization of localized aromatic units, i.e., the Clar's π-sextets. To illustrate the utility of this concept to the design of Kekulé diradicaloids, we have synthesized a tridecacyclic polyaromatic system where a gain of five Clar's sextets in the open-shell form overcomes electron pairing and leads to the emergence of a high degree of diradical character. According to unrestricted symmetry-broken UCAM-B3LYP calculations, the singlet diradical character in this core system is characterized by the y0 value of 0.98 (y0 = 0 for a closed-shell molecule, y0 = 1 for pure diradical). The efficiency of the new design strategy was evaluated by comparing the Kekulé system with an isomeric non-Kekulé diradical of identical size, i.e., a system where the radical centers cannot couple via resonance. The calculated singlet-triplet gap, i.e., the ΔEST values, in both of these systems approaches zero: -0.3 kcal/mol for the Kekulé and +0.2 kcal/mol for the non-Kekulé diradicaloids. The target isomeric Kekulé and non-Kekulé systems were assembled using a sequence of radical periannulations, cross-coupling, and C-H activation. The diradicals are kinetically stabilized by six tert-butyl substituents and (triisopropylsilyl)acetylene groups. Both molecules are NMR-inactive but electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR)-active at room temperature. Cyclic voltammetry revealed quasi-reversible oxidation and reduction processes, consistent with the presence of two nearly degenerate partially occupied molecular orbitals. The experimentally measured ΔEST value of -0.14 kcal/mol confirms that K is, indeed, a nearly perfect singlet diradical.

Abstract
We propose a rational method for evaluating the diradical character of the photochromic phenoxyl-imidazolyl radical complex (PIC) derivatives based on their radical-radical coupling reaction rates. PIC consists of an imidazole ring, a phenoxyl ring, and a bridging unit that structurally connects them. The C-N bond formed between the imidazole and phenoxyl rings can be dissociated photochemically in a homolytic manner. The photochromism of PIC differs significantly from other photochromic molecules in that the transient colored open-ring isomer has a diradical character. The colored open-ring isomer returns promptly to the initial colorless closed-ring isomer by the intramolecular radical recombination reaction. By changing the aromaticity and substitution position of the bridging unit, it is possible to control the degree of contribution of the open-shell diradical and closed-shell quinoidal structures to the open-ring isomer. Systematic investigation of the photochromic reactions of several PIC derivatives revealed that the half-life of the open-ring isomers reflects the diradical character. Thus, the radical recombination reaction rate of the open-ring isomer of the PIC derivatives is an excellent parameter of the diradical character.

Abstract
Herein, we report on the synthesis, characterization, and reactivity studies of the first cyclic C2 As2 -diradicaloid {(IPr)CAs}2 (6) (IPr = C{N(Dipp)CH}2 ; Dipp = 2,6-iPr2 C6 H3 ). Treatment of (IPr)CH2 (1) with AsCl3 affords the Lewis adduct {(IPr)CH2 }AsCl3 (2). Compound 2 undergoes stepwise dehydrochlorination to yield {(IPr)CH}AsCl2 (3) and {(IPr)CAsCl}2 (5 a) or [{(IPr)CAs}2 Cl]OTf (5 b). Reduction of 5 a (or 5 b) with magnesium turnings gives 6 as a red crystalline solid in 90% yield. Compound 6 featuring a planar C2 As2 ring is diamagnetic and exhibits well resolved NMR signals. DFT calculations reveal a singlet ground state for 6 with a small singlet-triplet energy gap of 8.7 kcal mol-1 . The diradical character of 6 amounts to 20% (CASSCF, complete active space self consistent field) and 28% (DFT). Treatments of 6 with (PhSe)2 and Fe2 (CO)9 give rise to {(IPr)CAs(SePh)}2 (7) and {(IPr)CAs}2 Fe(CO)4 (8), respectively.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterisation of a homologous series of quinoid sulfur-containing imidazolyl-substituted heteroacenes is described. The optoelectronic and magnetic properties were investigated by UV/vis, fluorescence and EPR spectroscopy as well as quantum-chemical calculations, and were compared to those of the corresponding benzo congener. The room-temperature and atmospherically stable quinoids display strong absorption in the NIR region between 678 and 819 nm. The dithieno[3,2-b:2',3'-d]thiophene and the thieno[2',3':4,5]thieno[3,2-b]thieno[2,3-d]thiophene derivatives were EPR active at room temperature. For the latter, variable-temperature EPR spectroscopy revealed the presence of a thermally accessible triplet state, with a singlet-triplet separation of 14.1 kJ mol-1 .

Abstract
Herein, the geometric, electronic, and nonlinear optical properties of excess electron zintl clusters Ge5AM3, Ge9AM5, and Ge10AM3 (AM = Li, Na, and K) are investigated. The clusters under consideration demonstrate considerable electronic stability as well as superalkali characteristics. The NBO charge is transferred from the alkali metal to the Ge-atoms. The FMO analysis shows fabulous conductive properties with a significant reduction in SOMO-LUMO gaps (0.79-4.04 eV) as compared with undoped systems. The designed clusters are completely transparent in the deep UV-region and show absorption in the visible and near-IR region. Being excess electron compounds these clusters exhibit remarkable hyperpolarizability response up to 8.99 × 10-26 esu, where a static second hyperpolarizability (γ o) value of up to 2.15 × 10-30 esu was recorded for Ge9Na5 superatom clusters. The excitation energy is the main controlling factor for hyperpolarizability as revealed from the two-level model study. The electro-optical Pockel's effect and the second harmonic generation phenomenon (SHG) are used to investigate dynamic nonlinear optical features. At a lower applied frequency (=532 nm), the dynamic hyperpolarizability and second hyperpolarizability values are significantly higher for the studied clusters. Furthermore, for the Ge9K5 cluster, the hyper Rayleigh scattering (HRS) increases to 5.03 × 10-26 esu.

Abstract
Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP) is a component of a large number of materials used for optoelectronic applications. As it is exclusively used in combination with aromatic donors, the properties of its homopolymers are unknown. Because donor-acceptor character has been shown for other systems to reduce bandwidths, DPP homopolymers should have even larger conduction bands and better n-type conductivity than the thiophene-flanked systems, which have exceptional n-type conductivity and ambipolar character. Therefore, a theoretical study was carried out to elucidate the properties of the unknown DPP homopolymer. Calculations were done with density functional theory and with the complete active space self-consistent field method plus n-electron valence state perturbation theory for the dynamic correlation. Poly-DPP is predicted to have radical character and an extremely wide low-lying conduction band. If it were possible to produce this material, it should have unprecedented n-type conductivity and might be a synthetic metal. A comparison with various unknown donor-acceptor systems containing vinyl groups and thienyl rings with a higher concentration of DPP than the known copolymers reveals how donor-acceptor substitution reduces bandwidths and decreases electron affinities.

Abstract
Using quantum chemical calculations and exciton dynamics simulations, we investigate the static second hyperpolarizability γ [the third-order nonlinear optical (NLO) property at the molecular scale] of slip-stacked pentacene dimer models in the correlated-triplet-pair [1(TT)] state created from the singlet excited state in the singlet fission (SF) process. It is found that the SF induces significant (∼20 times at maximum) enhancement of γ/monomer in the 1(TT) state as compared to that in the singlet ground state. The origin of the remarkable enhancement of γ/monomer is revealed by analyzing the γ density distribution and the intermolecular orbital interaction. Furthermore, we clarify molecular packings suitable for highly efficient SF and largely enhanced γ values of a novel class of SF-induced NLO systems, which have promising potential to surpass the conventional NLO systems.

Abstract
Three new squaraine-based functional π-conjugated molecules were synthesized considering the core and wings concept. The molecules, SQ-DICN, SQ-DIEt-RH, and SQ-DICN-RH, were end-capped with three different wings, such as malononitrile, 2-(3-hexyl-4-oxothiazolidin-2-ylidene)malononitrile, and 3-ethyl-2-thioxothiazolidin-4-one. Among the three dyes, SQ-DICN-RH showed the highest molar extinction coefficient. The photoluminescence of all the dyes showed an opposite trend to that of the absorption maximum. The electrochemical results showed that the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital level of all the dyes ranged from -3.72 to -3.82 eV, whereas the highest occupied molecular orbital ranged from -4.89 to -4.94 eV. Solvatochromism was carried out to observe the effects of the solvent containing the dyes. The electronic structure of the dyes was examined using ab initio simulations. The dyes were characterized theoretically, and the red-shifted absorption of SQ-DICN-RH was explained and correlated with its biradicaloid character and singlet-triplet energy gap.

Abstract
The geometrical and electronic structures of 44 squarate and croconate derivatives are computationally studied by quantum chemistry methods, in the pursuit of new singlet fission sensitizers. A non-negligible singlet open-shell diradical character is observed for most of the studied molecules, which can be controlled through chemical substitution as well as by the size of the central ring. Such a diradical character is related to small singlet-triplet energy gaps, facilitating the accomplishment of the singlet fission energetic requirements. In general, the present results indicate that squarates hold superior singlet fission capabilities than croconates, although we have identified several derivatives within both families as promising singlet fission sensitizers.

Abstract
A new strategy to design new molecules based on a fused hydrocarbon ring system comprising a COT ring and two 5-membered rings has been proposed for the study of second order NLO properties. The four charge transferring groups -NR2 (R = H, Li, Na and K) in conjunction with a sufficient number of electron withdrawing groups lead to significant variation of structural parameters and polarity. The charge transfer characteristics can be strongly modulated by introducing calcium metal atoms at suitable sites. Ca metal atoms end-capping the nitrogen ends of two adjacent -CN groups lead to electride character while a Ca metal atom bonded directly to the COT ring leads to greater charge transfer. The size of the alkali metal atom has been found to have a dramatic effect on the enhancement of first hyperpolarizability. The most significant electronic asymmetry induced by the larger potassium metal atom strongly enhances the magnitude of first hyperpolarizability. The variation of first hyperpolarizability has been satisfactorily explained in terms of TD-CAMB3LYP calculated spectroscopic parameters in light of the two-state model.

Abstract
This paper gives a brief summary of zethrene chemistry after the pioneering works by Clar, Mitchell, Sondheimer, and Staab et al. In the past a few years, various synthetic methods and stabilizing strategies have been developed, which have made the synthesis of stable, vertically and laterally extended zethrenes practically achievable. One of the most important discoveries for this type of molecule is their open-shell diradical character, which is the origin of their unique optical, electronic, and magnetic properties. The fundamental structure–diradical character–physical property relationships were investigated, and these studies form the basis for the tailored design of more general open-shell singlet diradicaloids with controllable diradical character and physical properties.

Abstract
Carbon atoms have the potential to produce a variety of fascinating all-carbon structures with amazing electronic and mechanical properties. Over the last few decades, several efforts have been made using experimental and computational techniques to functionalize graphene, carbon nanotubes and fullerenes for potential use in modern hi-tech electronic, medicinal, optical and nonlinear optical (NLO) applications. Since photons replaced electrons as a carrier of information, the field of NLO material design has drawn immense interest in contemporary materials science. There have been several reports of bridging the gap between the exciting fields of carbon nanomaterials and NLO materials by functionalizing carbon nanomaterials for potential NLO applications. In contrast to previous reports of the design of third-order NLO materials using conventional closed-shell materials, a novel strategy using open-shell diradical molecular systems has recently been proposed. Quantum chemically, diradical character is explained in terms of the instability of the chemical bonds in open-shell molecular systems. Interestingly, several carbon nanomaterials, which naturally possess open-shell singlet configurations, have recently gained momentum in the design of these classes of open-shell NLO materials with excellent NLO properties, stability and diversity. The present review establishes a systematic sequence of different studies (spanning over two decades of intense research efforts), starting from the simplest theoretical two-site diradical model, continuing to its experimental and theoretical realization in actual chemical systems, and finally applying the abovementioned model/rule to novel carbon nanomaterials to tune their NLO properties, particularly their second hyperpolarizability (γ). In the present report, we highlight several recent efforts to functionalize carbon nanomaterials by exploiting their open-shell diradical character to achieve efficient third-order NLO properties. Several issues and opportunities are discussed, including the inherited disadvantages of both experimental (the high reactivity and short life of diradical compounds) and quantum (need for multi-reference methodology) techniques when dealing with carbon nanomaterials. A comparative analysis of several quantum chemical investigations, along with contemporary experimental results, will be performed to emphasize the core issues and opportunities related to carbon nanomaterials with singlet open-shell diradical character. Thus, the present review will highlight carbon nanomaterials with diradical/biradical character for their prospective applications in the NLO field.

Abstract
We investigate the role of Kekulé and non-Kekulé structures in the radical character of alternant polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) using thermally-assisted-occupation density functional theory (TAO-DFT), an efficient electronic structure method for the study of large ground-state systems with strong static correlation effects. Our results reveal that the studies of Kekulé and non-Kekulé structures qualitatively describe the radical character of alternant PAHs, which could be useful when electronic structure calculations are infeasible due to the expensive computational cost. In addition, our results support previous findings on the increase in radical character with increasing system size. For alternant PAHs with the same number of aromatic rings, the geometrical arrangements of aromatic rings are responsible for their radical character.

Abstract
The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of Λ-shaped diarylethene (DAE) derivatives 1a(b)–4a(b) and their NLO switching effects were studied by using the density functional theory (DFT) methods. The results demonstrate that all of the open-ring molecules and their own closed-ring forms meet the model of NLO switching tuned by photoisomerization. The βtot values of 1b–3b are 16 times as small as that of their open-ring forms, and βtot value of 4b is 4 times as large as that of 4a. The spin interactions of open-shell closed-ring molecules are larger than that of their open-ring forms, and it could increase the NLO responses to some degree. Nature bond orbital (NBO) calculations indicate that large charge differences between electron-deficient and electron-rich centers are beneficial to charge transfer (CT), and the overlap between frontier molecular orbital (FMO) is also advantageous to the CT and NLO responses. Time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) calculations show βtot values of all molecules meet the two-level model very well, and the smaller the ΔE ge , the larger the βtot value.

Abstract
The static second-order nonlinear optical (NLO) properties on a series of phenyl nitronyl-nitroxide (NN) radical derivatives were investigated using density functional theory (DFT). It is found that the first hyperpolarizabilities of these systems are sensitive to the substituents, and system 4a containing of a two-dimensional (2D) substituent possesses the largest βtot value of 83.134 × 10-30 esu. Meanwhile, the time-dependent (TD)-PBE1PBE calculations indicate that low transition energy can enhance the NLO responses. As a result of the reversible one-electron oxidizations of these systems, the redox switching of the NLO responses of systems 1a–5a have also been studied. The βtot value of system 2b′ is about 20.75 times larger than that of 2a due to the larger degree of conjugation, which provides a possibility of NLO switching. According to the analysis of the frontier molecular orbitals (FMO), oxidization reduces the HOMO–LUMO gap and changes charge transfer (CT) direction.
