Abstract
Understanding charge transport is essential for the development of energy-storage applications. This work introduces a new theoretical methodology to model diffusive charge transport in solutions of redox-active molecules by combining Langevin dynamics for the spatial degrees of freedom and a master-equation formalism to describe the electron-hopping events between redox molecules. The model is used to analyze the effects of the concentration of the redox molecules and the strength of the intermolecular interactions on the charge-transport mechanism. In the past, the rate of charge transport has been modeled with the analytical Dahms-Ruff equation; however, this is a mean-field equation, whose range of validity has not been tested with less approximate theories. We show that the Dahms-Ruff equation fails to quantitatively predict the diffusion coefficient for charge transport for large concentrations of the redox species and high bimolecular electron-transfer rates, i.e., the most relevant conditions for energy-storage applications. Under these conditions, the diffusion coefficient for charge transport obtained from simulations is larger than that predicted from the Dahm-Ruff equation because of the formation of transient clusters of redox molecules. Also, intermolecular interactions, which are not taken into account by the Dahms-Ruff equation, play a central role in the charge transport of redox species. We show that the apparent diffusion coefficient experiences a maximum with respect to the strength of the intermolecular attractions. This maximum is traced back to the formation of clusters and their two opposite effects on the diffusion coefficient: electron hopping is fast within a cluster but inefficient between neighboring clusters.

Abstract
The thiol-yne coupling chemistry of diferrocenylacetylene (FcCCFc) 1, bearing two electron rich and redox-active ferrocenyl units (Fc = Fe(η5-C5H4)(η5-C5H5)) and an internal triple bond, has been investigated for the first time. In order to determine whether steric limitations might affect hydrothiolation, a model reaction using a functionalized monothiol was tested, namely 2-mercaptoethanol I. The thiol-diferrocenylacetylene reactions were initiated either thermally (in toluene with AIBN) or by UV light irradiation (in THF and in the presence of DMPA as the photoinitiator). The outcomes of these thiol-yne reactions showed a strong dependence on the initiation method used, with the thermally initiated one being the most efficient. These thiol-diferrocenylacetylene reactions mainly afforded the (Z)-stereoisomer of the newly obtained vinyl thioether sulfide FcCHC(Fc)S-(CH2)2OH (2), unlike the more common (E)-vinyl sulfides found in other additions to alkynes. The hydrothiolation of the internal -CC- bond in 1 was successfully extended to dithiol 2,2'-(ethylenedioxy)diethanethiol II, leading to the formation of the (ZZ)-isomer, with four ferrocenyl units, as the major product. According to the electrochemical studies, the new asymmetrical ferrocenyl-vinyl sulfides show iron-iron electronic and electrostatic interactions. Theoretical results for the (Z)-stereoisomer (2) suggest that adiabatic oxidation would lead to the loss of almost one electron on the ferrocenyl subunit closer to the thioether chain. Furthermore, the thiol-yne chemistry of the internal -CC- bond in diferrocenylacetylene has been compared to the external triple bond in ethynylferrocene, the theoretical results of which helped us to rationalize the very different reactivities observed in both metallocenes.

Abstract
Molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to investigate the conformations of ferrocenyl-dicholesteryl N-formamidoformamide (Fc-LS2) molecules in solvents of methanol and 1-propanol. Fc-LS2 comprises ferrocene and cholesteryl units linked by a biocompatible N-formamidoformamide peptide unit. Our results showed that Fc-LS2 formed a gel with 1-propanol but not with methanol. Charge-transfer properties of Fc-LS2/1-propanol gel and Fc-LS2/methanol liquid were also investigated by quantum mechanical (QM) calculations. The QM results indicate that the amino acid linkages contribute to improved charge-transport properties and the transfer integrals of Fc-LS2/1-propanol are larger than those of Fc-LS2/methanol.

Abstract
Despite the importance of ultrafast (time scale exceeding 10(-11) s) intramolecular proton transfer (PT) events between electronic ground states in solution, experimental determination of the rates of such reactions has not yet been accomplished because of the limitations of the utilized methods. The objective of this study was to evaluate the PT rates of intramolecular O···H···O hydrogen-bonded systems in solution through the (1)H spin-lattice relaxation times of the hydroxyl protons, induced by the (1)H-(17)O dipolar interactions (T(1dd)(OH)), taking into account the contribution of the OH reorientational motion to T(1dd)(OH). Solutions of the benzoic acid dimer (BA dimer), 1-benzoyl-6-hydroxy-6-phenylfulvene (Fulvene), and dibenzoylmethane (DBM) were chosen as test systems. For Fulvene in CCl(4), the PT time, τ(PT), was deduced to be 7 × 10(-11) s. In the case of the BA dimer in CCl(4), the τ(PT) value was considerably greater than the OH reorientational correlation time, τ(R(OH)) = 4.3 × 10(-11) s. In contrast, the experimental results for DBM in CCl(4) indicated that the proton is located about midway between the two oxygen atoms, that is, the PT potential energy surface is a single well or a double well with a PT barrier near or below the zero-point energy.

Abstract
A series of mixed-valent (MV) complexes [(FeCp)2(mu-C10H6(BPh)2)]+X ([1+]X; X=I 5, PF6, SbF6, B(C6F5)4) were prepared by oxidation of diboradiferrocene [(FeCp)2(mu-C10H6(BPh)2)] (1) with I 2, AgPF6, and AgSbF6, respectively, and through anion exchange of the I 5(-) salt with [Li(Et2O)x][B(C6F5)4] in the case of X=B(C6F5)4. The MV state of the cation was investigated in solution by multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, CV, and UV/Vis-NIR absorption spectroscopy, and in the solid state by IR spectroscopy, single-crystal X-ray crystallography, and Mössbauer spectroscopy. The cyclic voltammogram of 1 shows two distinct redox waves with a large redox splitting of Delta E=510 mV in CH2Cl2 and the NIR spectrum for the mono-oxidized species displays an intervalence charge-transfer band at around 1500 to 1700 nm depending on the specific counterion present. The X-ray crystal structures of [1+]X show inversion-symmetric cations with X=I 5 and B(C6F5)4 and unsymmetric valence-trapped structures composed of one ferrocene and one ferrocenium moiety with X=PF6 and SbF6. Mössbauer data for X=PF6 are consistent with valence trapping at all temperatures between 90 and 343 K. In comparison, fast electron transfer is evident on the Mössbauer timescale for X=I 5 and temperature-dependent behavior is observed for X=B(C6F5)4. The anion dependence of the X-ray structural and Mössbauer data is discussed in the context of crystal symmetry and the possibility of static and dynamic disorder effects is considered.
