Comparing an Ionic Liquid to a Molecular Solvent in the Cesium Cation Extraction by a Calixarene: A Molecular Dynamics Study of the Aqueous Interfaces

Stability of composite polymeric beads containing a calix[4]arene-mono-crown-6 ligand for radio-cesium separation

Bis-octyloxy-calix[4]arene-mono-crown-6 (BOCMC) is a selective ligand for Cs(I) cation, and has been used in solvent extraction method for its separation from acidic feed. Looking at the various advantages and ease of extraction chromatography separation method, an attempt was made to prepare stable composite beads containing BOCMC entrapped in a suitable polymeric matrix. Therefore, an attempt was made to prepare a series of composite polymeric beads containing BOCMC in polysulfone (PS), polyether sulfone (PES) and sodium alginate polymeric matrix. Preparations of the beads were attempted by dissolving the solid BOCMC in the polymer solution, and also by using the ligand solution in isodecanol/dodecane and ionic liquids and then mixing in the polymeric solution. Every attempt failed to get the desired quality of beads in PES and sodium alginate matrix. However, very good quality and stable beads were obtained when 25 mM ligand solution dissolved in C₈mim.Tf₂N ionic liquid was used in PS matrix. Detail study for the extraction chromatography separation of Cs(I) was studied with BOCMC/C₈mim.Tf₂N/PS composite beads. Detail investigations on the preparation, characterization, reusability and radiation stability of these beads have been studied and reported in details.

Liquid-Liquid Extraction of the Eu(III) Cation by BTP Ligands into Ionic Liquids: Interfacial Features and Extraction Mechanisms Investigated by MD Simulations

What happens at the ionic-liquid (IL)/water interface when the Eu³⁺ cation is complexed and extracted by bis(dimethyltriazinyl) pyridine "BTP" ligands has been investigated by molecular dynamics and potential of mean force simulations on the interface crossing by key species: neutral BTP, its protonated BTPH⁺ form, Eu³⁺, and the Eu(BTP)₃³⁺ complex. At both the [BMI][Tf₂N]/water and [OMI][Tf₂N]/water interfaces, neither BTP nor Eu(BTP)₃³⁺ are found to adsorb. The distribution of Eu(BTP)₂³⁺ and Eu(BTP)³⁺ precursors of Eu(BTP)₃³⁺, and of their nitrate adducts, implies the occurrence of a stepwise complexation process in the interfacial domain, however. The analysis of the ionic content of the bulk phases and of their interface before and after extraction highlights the role of charge buffering by interfacial IL cations and anions, by different amounts depending on the IL. Comparison of ILs with octanol as the oil phase reveals striking differences regarding the extraction efficiency, the affinity of Eu(BTP)₃³⁺ for the interface, the effects of added nitric acid and of counterions (NO₃^- vs Tf₂N^-), charge neutralization mechanisms, and the extent of "oil" heterogeneity. Extraction into octanol is suggested to proceed via adsorption at the surface of water pools, nanoemulsions, or droplets, with marked counterion effects.

Multicomponent Phase Separation in Ternary Mixture Ionic Liquid Electrolytes

We investigate the phase behavior of ternary mixtures of ionic liquid, organic solvent, and lithium salt by molecular dynamics simulations. We find that at room temperature, the electrolyte separates into distinct phases with specific compositions; an ion-rich domain that contains a fraction of solvent molecules and a second domain of pure solvent. The phase separation is shown to be entropy-driven and is independent of lithium salt concentration. Phase separation is only observed at microsecond time scales and greatly affects the transport properties of the electrolyte.

Partitioning of Cs+ and Na+ ions by dibenzo-18-crown-6 ionophore in biphasic aqueous systems of octanol and ionic liquid

Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were carried out to obtain molecular level insights on the behavior of Cs+/Na+ ions at the water–ionic liquid and water–octanol interface in the presence of dibenzo-18-crown-6 (DB18C6) ionophore with an aim to compare an ionic liquid (IL) to a octanol as receiving organic solvent phase. It was observed that the rate of phase separation for the octanol system was rapid as compared to the IL system. The free crown ethers (CE) were found to be highly solvated by the IL phase. A dual cationic exchange mechanism was observed at the [BMIM]/water interface. The [BMIM]+ cation was found to exchange with both the metal ions in aqueous phase as well as with the metal ion aided by the ionophore. The self-diffusion coefficient of the 1:2 complex (0.07×10−9 m2/s) at the octanol/water interface were found to be smaller than that of 1:1 complex (0.37 and 0.14×10−9 m2/s). It was observed that the surface tension of ILs decreased in the presence of complexes and free CE, whereas the surface tension of water was found to increase in presence of salts (Cs+NO3 − and Na+NO3 −). The experimentally determined value of D Cs was found to be quite high in IL phase (1.595) compared to the octanol phase (0.139) in presence of CE. The kinetics of Cs+ was found to be very fast having rate with values of k 1 ^ $\widehat {{k_1}}$ =1.79×10−12 s−1 and k 2 ^ $\widehat {{k_2}}$ =0.205×10−12 s−1 in IL and water phase, respectively. The present results may help us in understanding the role of diluents in the assisted metal ion extraction but also in the future design of diluents and ionophore.

Binding Selectivity of Macrocycle Ionophores in Ionic Liquids versus Aqueous Solution and Solvent-free Conditions

The understanding of supramolecular recognition in room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) is key to develop the full potential of these materials. In this work, we provide insights into the selectivity of the binding of alkali metal cations by standard cyclodextrin and calixarene macrocycles in RTILs. A direct laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry approach is employed to determine the relative abundances of the inclusion complexes formed through competitive binding in RTIL solutions. The results are compared with the binding selectivities measured under solvent-free conditions and in water/methanol solutions. Cyclodextrins and calixarenes in which the peripheral OH groups are substituted by bulkier side groups preferentially bind to Cs(+) . Such specific ionophoric behavior is substantially enhanced by solvation effects in the RTIL. This finding is rationalized with the aid of quantum mechanical calculations, in terms of the conformational features and steric interactions that drive the solvation of the inclusion complexes by the bulky RTIL counterions.

Spontaneous emulsification in ionic liquid/water systems and its use for templating of solids

We report on the spontaneous formation of nano-sized ionic liquid/water (IL/W) emulsions in a simple system solely composed of an IL and aqueous solution of an inorganic salt. The IL ions play a dual role, that of both a surfactant and the dispersed phase. No extra surfactant is needed to promote emulsification. Droplets generation at the IL/W interface is captured by nanoparticulate and porous films that imprint the morphology of this unstable interface. The emulsion droplets are employed to create core-shell microcrystals with potential functionality.

Complexation of alkali metal cations by crown-ether type podands with applications in solvent extraction: insights from quantum chemical calculations

The complexation behavior of nine polyether type podands with a varying number of oxygen donor atoms (4-10) towards the alkali metal cations Li(+), Na(+) and K(+) was studied by quantum chemical methods at the DFT-B3LYP level of theory using the all-electron split-valence 6-311++G(d,p) basis set. The optimized structures of the complexes show a regular increase in the mean cation-oxygen distance with the coordination number. OC-CO dihedral angles of the podand arms were also found to increase with the coordination number and with the size of the cation. Maximum values for the number of strong cation-oxygen interactions (effective coordination numbers) were found for each cation (six for Li(+), seven for Na(+) and eight for K(+)). The calculated values for thermodynamic parameters relative to the binding of free and solvated cations to the podands allowed the assessment of binding constants in vacuum, in water and in dichloromethane. The estimated cation extraction constants mimic the experimental extraction trends, but their values are much larger than experimental values. Scale factors were determined to correct the values effectively. For each podand the ratios between the calculated extraction constants of Li(+) (or Na(+)) and the corresponding ones for K(+) (seen as extraction selectivities) compare acceptably with the corresponding experimental values.

Conversion of the surface property of oleic acid stabilized silver nanoparticles from hydrophobic to hydrophilic based on host-guest binding interaction

This paper describes a general method to change the surface property of the oleic acid stabilized silver nanoparticles and successful tranferring of the silver nanoparticles from the organic phase into the aqueous phase. By vigorous shaking of a biphasic mixture of the silver organosol protected with oleic acid and p-sulfonated calix[4]arene (pSC4) aqueous solution, it is believed that an inclusion complex is formed between oleic acid molecules and pSC4, and the protective layer of the silver nanoparticles shifts from hydrophobic to hydrophilic in nature, which drives the transfer of silver nanoparticles from the organic phase into the aqueous phase. The efficiency of the phase transfer to the aqueous solution depends on the initial pSC4 concentration. The pSC4-oleic acid inclusion complex stabilized nanoparticles can be stable for long periods of time in aqueous phase under ambient atmospheric conditions. The procedure of phase transfer has been independently verified by UV-vis, transmission electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared, and 1H nuclear magnetic resonance techniques.

The effect of a solvent modifier in the cesium extraction by a calix[4]arene: a molecular dynamics study of the oil phase and the oil-water interface

We report a molecular dynamics (MD) study of the effect of a fluorinated lipophilic alcohol (referred to as "cs3" by Delmau et al, Solvent Extr. Ion Exch., 2005, 23, 23) used as a phase modifier in the solvent extraction of Cs(+) NO(3)(-) by a calix[4]arene. It is shown that adding cs3 to a chloroform phase improves the solvation of all partners of the extraction system, i.e. the free calixarene ligand L, its LCs(+) complex and its counterion. This effect is most pronounced for the NO(3)(-) anion that is H-bonded to the -OH and terminal -CF(2)H protons of cs3. On the average, the dissociated nitrate interacts with 2 to 4 cs3 molecules, whereas the associated nitrate (LCs(+)NO(3)(-) complex) interacts with one cs3 dimer. The remaining modifier molecules are mainly dissolved in the solution as dimers or trimers and, to a lesser extent, as monomers and tetramers. Insights into the question of ion pairing in the organic phase are obtained via free energy perturbation (FEP) calculations, showing that the LCs(+)NO(3)(-) paired complex is more stable than its analogue with the dissociated anion. Furthermore, the nitrate dissociation energy is ca. twice as small in the cs3-modified solution than in a pure chloroform phase. We also simulated chloroform/cs3/water ternary systems, showing that the modifiers are surface active and stabilize the formation of water nanodroplets, while other modifier molecules drag some water to the organic phase. Calixarene complexes also adsorb at the aqueous interface in the presence of modifiers, confirming the importance of interfacial phenomena in the assisted cation extraction process. The microscopic insights obtained by the simulations are consistent with experimental results and allow us to better understand why the extraction is enhanced after addition of modifiers to the organic phase.
