Abstract
The glycoprotein gp41 from the Human Immunodeficiency Virus type 1 (HIV-1) has an amino acid sequence enriched in tryptophan residues, the so-called gp41W peptide (i.e., KWASLWNWFNITNWLWYIK) and plays a crucial role in HIV-1 host cell infection. Using the coupling of Second Harmonic Generation targeting the tryptophan residues with lateral surface tension measurements, we investigate the interaction of gp41W with a neat air∕water and a lipid∕water interfaces. At the air∕water interface, gp41W presents a well-defined orientation and this orientation is strongly modified at the lipid∕water interface, depending on the surface pressure. These results show that this strategy is well suited to monitor tryptophan containing α-helices orientation at lipid∕water interfaces.

Abstract
The second harmonic generation (SHG) hyperpolarizabilities of phenylalanine and homopolypeptides are investigated by configuration interaction among singly excited configurations (CIS) technique combined with the sum-over-states (SOS) method. The geometries of peptides containing phenylalanine ( Phe )n(n = 1–8) are optimized by B3LYP/6-31g(d) method, and they form the special structures like β-sheet (a common protein secondary structure). It is found that the energy gaps of various peptides are reduced and the hyperpolarizabilities are increased with the peptide chains lengthened. We discuss the origin of the second-order nonlinear optical response in phenylalanine homopolypeptides and confirm that the π → π* transitions in the aromatic residue of phenylalanine make the most important contributions to the second-order polarizability. Our results strongly suggest that the hyperpolarizabilities are dominated from the propagation direction of peptide chains.

Abstract
We report the first hyperpolarizability of tryptophan (Trp) and tyrosine (Tyr) and an upper limit for that of phenylalanine (Phe), three natural aromatic amino acids. The measurements were performed with hyper-Rayleigh scattering in an aqueous Tris buffer solution at a pH of 8.5 and 150 mM salt concentration with a fundamental wavelength of 780 nm. A value of (4.7 ± 0.7) × 10(-30) esu is found for Trp and (4.1 ± 0.7) × 10(-30) esu for Tyr whereas the upper limit of 1.4 × 10(-30) esu is found for that of Phe due to its limited solubility. The influence of the presence of lysine (Lys) in close vicinity of Trp is investigated with a measurement of the first hyperpolarizabilty of Trp in an excess of Lys and compared to the first hyperpolarizability obtained for the tripeptide Lys-Trp-Lys. The clear decrease of the values measured in these two cases indicates that the first hyperpolarizabilty of Trp is very sensitive to its local environment.

Abstract
The solvent-induced changes in the optical and spectroscopic properties of 1,2-benzenedicarboxylic anhydride are studied using time dependent Hartree-Fock and density functional theory calculations within the framework of two reaction field procedures. To investigate the influence of the cavity shape, the Onsager reaction field is compared with the polarized continuum model (PCM). It is observed that solvent polarity has noticeable effects on the vibrational properties as well as the linear and nonlinear optical characteristics of the molecule. Furthermore, the Onsager and PCM procedures may lead to contradicted harmonic vibrational frequencies; in the case of the studied molecule the Onsager model predicts the blue-shifted CH stretching band while PCM leads to red-shifted CH stretching mode.
