Layer-by-Layer Assembled Membranes of Protonated 18-Azacrown-6 and Polyvinylsulfate and Their Application for Highly Efficient Anion Separation

Cu2+ ion-sensitive surface on graphite electrodes

A new electrochemical interface based on polyacrylic acid (PAAcid) immobilized in a Nafion® polymeric matrix on graphite screen-printed electrodes for detecting copper is presented. The copper is retained in the surface due to the capacity of the polyacid to chelate metals, and quantified using square wave voltammetry. The response was characterized by spectroscopic techniques (UV-vis-IR), which confirmed the chelation from the Cu²⁺ ions by the acid. A calibration curve is presented, showing good linearity and repeatability and its usefulness as a sensor. The range of operation goes from 15 to 50 μM, with a detection limit of 12 μM, making the sensor useful for measurements in environmental samples (after a preconcentration step) and in drinking water.

Knock-on synthesis of tritopic calix[4]pyrrole host for enhanced anion interactions

Interactions of anionic guests with a tritopic peripherally functionalized conjugated calix[4]pyrrole host (1) prepared using a regioselective synthetic method is reported. The regioselectivity of synthesis relies on selective N-alkylation of the calix[4]pyrrole caused by peripheral substitution of one pyrrole group with subsequent N-alkylation at the opposing pyrrole group termed by us 'knock-on' regioselectivity. The resulting host molecule exhibits anion interactions with common chloride and nitrate anions enhanced by an order of magnitude over the parent conjugated calix[4]pyrrole. Combined analysis of ¹H NMR and UV-vis spectroscopic titration data enabled an evaluation of binding strengths of anions with the host K_A in a binding model where the salt dissociation process is also incorporated in the form of its dissociation constant K_d. Anions could be classified as two types based on their interactions with 1: Type A anions (chloride, nitrate, perchlorate, hydrogensulphate) associate as 1 : 1 complexes through hydrogen bonding while interactions involving Type B anions (acetate, fluoride, dihydrogenphosphate) are complicated by host deprotonation and/or countercation association. Hosts based on rim-functionalized calix[4]pyrroles such as 1 represent a promising new family of chromophores for estimation of biologically relevant anions or other species.

Anion binding, electrochemistry and solvatochromism of β-brominated oxoporphyrinogens

Effects of macrocycle bromination on the structural, electrochemical and anion binding properties of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(3,5-di-t-butyl-4-oxo-cyclohexa-2,5-dienylidene)porphyrinogen, OxP, are reported. Bromination of 5,10,15,20-tetrakis(3,5-di-t-butyl-4-hydroxyphenyl)-porphinatocopper(II), [T(DtBHP)P]Cu(II) yielded β-Br8OxP, which was N-alkylated to β-Br8OxPBz2 and β-Br8OxPBz4 (where Bz = 4-bromobenzyl). β-Br8OxPBz2 crystallizes in orthorhombic space group Pccn [a = 23.5535(17) Å, b = 19.3587(14) Å c = 20.9760(15) Å, V = 9564.3(12) Å3]. It has a calix[4]pyrrole-like structure with a saddle conformation and two molecules of methanol occupy a central binding site made up of the non-alkylated pyrrole N–H groups. Computational and electrochemical studies revealed widening HOMO–LUMO band gaps for the brominated compounds over the non-brominated analogues consistent with the observed hypsochromic shifts in electronic absorption spectra. Solvatochromic and chromogenic effects on anion binding were both observed for β-Br8OxP and β-Br8OxPBz2 with binding affinities of anions being greater than those observed for the corresponding OxP and OxPBz2. Colorimetric sensor studies suggest that the OxP compounds reported here are possible candidates for use in the design of optoelectronic noses for detection of anions and anionic analyte species of biological interest.

Recent Progress in Ferrocene-Modified Thin Films and Nanoparticles for Biosensors

This article reviews recent progress in the development of ferrocene (Fc)-modified thin films and nanoparticles in relation to their biosensor applications. Redox-active materials in enzyme biosensors commonly use Fc derivatives, which mediate electron transfer between the electrode and enzyme active site. Either voltammetric or amperometric signals originating from redox reactions of Fc are detected or modulated by the binding of analytes on the electrode. Fc-modified thin films have been prepared by a variety of protocols, including insitu polymerization, layer-by-layer (LbL) deposition, host-guest complexation and molecular recognitions. Insitu polymerization provides a facile way to form Fc thin films, because the Fc polymers are directly deposited onto the electrode surface. LbL deposition, which can modulate the film thickness and Fc content, is suitable for preparing well-organized thin films. Other techniques, such as host-guest complexation and protein-based molecular recognition, are useful for preparing Fc thin films. Fc-modified Au nanoparticles have been widely used as redox-active materials to fabricate electrochemical biosensors. Fc derivatives are often attached to Au nanoparticles through a thiol-Au linkage. Nanoparticles consisting of inorganic porous materials, such as zeolites and iron oxide, and nanoparticle-based composite materials have also been used to prepare Fc-modified nanoparticles. To construct biosensors, Fc-modified nanoparticles are immobilized on the electrode surface together with enzymes.

Formation and tunable disassembly of polyelectrolyte-Cu2+ layer-by-layer complex film

Layer-by-layer assembly of films containing metal ions was investigated. A complex between various metal ions and branched polyethyleneimine is formed in solution and then assembled into multilayer films with poly(acrylic acid). The metal-ligand complex formation results in brightly colored materials that deposit as thick layers. Cu(2+)-containing films were chosen as a model for studying the disassembly of these films in response to various stimuli, including pH, salt, and surfactants. The range of pH instability corresponds to the pH range over which pores are formed in the film. We demonstrate controllable disassembly of these materials, which could be used for antifungal or antibacterial applications.

Functional polyelectrolyte multilayer membranes for water purification applications

A diverse set of supported multilayer assemblies with controllable surface charge, hydrophilicity, and permeability to water and solute was fabricated by pressure driven permeation of poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS) and poly(diallyldimethylammonium chloride) (PDDA) solution through poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) track-etched membranes. The polyelectrolyte multilayer fabrication was confirmed by means of FTIR, SEM, AFM, ellipsometry, zetapotential, and contact angle characterization. The prepared membranes were characterized in terms of their pure water permeability, flux recovery, and resistance to organic and biofouling properties. The antifouling behavior of the membranes was assessed in terms of protein adsorption and antibacterial behavior. Finally, the membranes were tested for rejection of selected water soluble dyes to establish their usefulness for organic contaminant removal from water. The membranes were highly selective and capable of nearly complete rejection of congo red with sufficiently high fluxes. The feasibility of regenerating the prepared membranes fouled by protein was also demonstrated and good flux recovery was obtained. In summary, the multilayer approach to surface and pore modification was shown to enable the design of membranes with the unique combination of desirable separation characteristics, regenerability of the separation layer, and antifouling behavior.
