Dissociative double ionization of CO2: dynamics, energy levels, and lifetime

Design and characterization of a recoil ion momentum spectrometer for investigating molecular fragmentation dynamics upon MeV energy ion impact ionization

We present the development and performance of a newly built recoil ion momentum spectrometer to study the fragmentation dynamics of ionized molecules. The spectrometer is based on the two-stage Wiley-McLaren geometry and satisfies both time and velocity focusing conditions. An electrostatic lens has been introduced in the drift region to achieve velocity imaging and higher angular collection. The spectrometer is equipped with a 2D position-sensitive detector with multi-hit coincidence electronics. Ionic fragments with kinetic energy ∼8 eV can be detected with 4π collection. The overall performance of the spectrometer has been tested by carrying out three-dimensional ion imaging measurements for diatomic (N₂) and polyatomic (CH₂Cl₂) molecules under the impact of 1 MeV protons. Three-dimensional momentum and kinetic energy release distributions were derived from the measured position and time-of-flight spectra. The observed features of the various fragmentation channels as well as the measured kinetic energy release distributions are in complete agreement with the available data.

Time-resolved dissociative ionization and double photoionization of CO2

CO₂ single-photon double photoionization, Coulomb explosion, and dissociative ionization are studied with ultrafast extreme-ultraviolet pump and time-delayed near-infrared probe pulses. Kinetic energy release and momentum correlations for the two-body CO⁺ + O⁺ and three-body O⁺ + C⁺ + O fragmentation products are determined by 3D coincidence fragment imaging. The transient enhancement of the ratio of two-body vs three-body Coulomb explosion events and the time dependence of low and high kinetic energy release dissociation events are discussed in terms of dissociative ionization and Coulomb explosion dynamics.

A new technique for measurement of subrotational lifetime of molecular ions

Singly and multiply charged molecular ions are found in diverse environments and hold relevance for a wide range of research areas like combustion chemistry, accelerator physics, atmospheric sciences, plasma physics, astrophysics etc. Molecular dications are of special significance as they can be generated and studied comparatively easily in laboratory experiments. And they have enabled exploration of new and exciting phenomenon such as hydrogen migration, inter-atomic Coulombic decay, plasmonic excitations, orbital tomography etc. The lifetime of a molecular dication is one of its fundamental characteristics, whose measurement contributes to strengthening ab initio calculations and in predicting the concentration of its dissociation products. Most of the already reported lifetimes of molecular dications are in the range of nanoseconds to seconds and metastable states with lifetimes of the order of picoseconds have only been theoretical predicted and an experimental verification is pending. We present a method of measuring subrotational lifetimes of molecular dications formed in three-body sequential breakup of polyatomic molecular precursors. Specifically, we have measured the subrotational lifetime of \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\hbox {SO}^{2+}$$\end{document}SO2+ , which is formed as an intermediate in the three-body sequential fragmentation of \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\hbox {SO}_2^{3+}$$\end{document}SO23+. The lifetime against dissociation is determined to be a fraction of the rotational period of \documentclass[12pt]{minimal} \usepackage{amsmath} \usepackage{wasysym} \usepackage{amsfonts} \usepackage{amssymb} \usepackage{amsbsy} \usepackage{mathrsfs} \usepackage{upgreek} \setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt} \begin{document}$$\hbox {SO}^{2+}$$\end{document}SO2+ and is of the order of few picoseconds. The method proposed is general and is not restricted to triatomic precursors.

Production and Characterization of Molecular Dications: Experimental and Theoretical Efforts

Molecular dications are doubly charged cations of importance in flames, plasma chemistry and physics and in the chemistry of the upper atmosphere of Planets. Furthermore, they are exotic species able to store a considerable amount of energy at a molecular level. This high energy content of several eV can be easily released as translational energy of the two fragment monocations generated by their Coulomb explosion. For such a reason, they were proposed as a new kind of alternative propellant. The present topic review paper reports on an overview of the main contributions made by the authors’ research groups in the generation and characterization of simple molecular dications during the last 40 years of coupling experimental and theoretical efforts.

Photodissociation mechanisms of the CO2(2+) dication studied using multi-state multiconfiguration second-order perturbation theory

Employing the multi-state multiconfiguration second-order perturbation theory (MS-CASPT2) and complete active space self-consistent field (CASSCF) methods, the geometries, relative energies (T(v)') to the ground state (X(3)Σg(-)), adiabatic excited energies, and photodissociation mechanisms and corresponding kinetic energy releases for the lower-lying 14 electronic states of the CO2 (2+) ion are studied. The T(v)' values are calculated at the experimental geometry of the ground state CO2 molecule using MS-CASPT2 method and highly close to the latest threshold photoelectrons coincidence and time-of-flight photoelectron photoelectron coincidence spectrum observations. The O-loss dissociation potential energy curves (PECs) for these 14 states are drawn using MS-CASPT2 partial optimization method at C(∞v) symmetry with one C-O bond length ranging from 1.05 to 8.0 Å. Those 14 states are confirmed to be correlated to the lowest four dissociation limits [CO(+)(X(2)Σ(+)) + O(+)((4)S(u)), CO(+)(A(2)Π) + O(+)((4)S(u)), CO(+)(X(2)Σ(+)) + O(+)((2)D(u)), and CO(+)(X(2)Σ(+)) + O(+)((2)P(u))] by analyzing Coulomb interaction energies, charges, spin densities, and bond lengths for the geometries at the C-O bond length of 8.0 Å. On the basis of these 14 MS-CASPT2 PECs, several state/state pairs are selected to optimize the minimum energy crossing points (MECPs) at the CASSCF level. And then the CASSCF spin-orbit couplings and CASPT2 state/state energies are calculated at these located MECPs. Based on all of the computational results, the photodissociation mechanisms of CO2(2+) are proposed. The relationships between the present theoretical studies and the previous experiments are discussed.

Mass spectrometry in India

This review emphasizes the mass spectrometry research being performed at academic and established research institutions in India. It consists of three main parts covering the work done in organic, atomic and biological mass spectrometry. The review reveals that the use of mass spectrometry techniques started in the middle of the 20th century and was applied to research in the fields of organic, nuclear, geographical and atomic chemistry. Later, with the advent of soft and atmospheric ionization techniques it has been applied to pharmaceutical and biological research. In due course, several research centers with advanced mass spectrometry facilities have been established for specific areas of research such as gas-phase ion chemistry, ion-molecule reactions, proscribed chemicals, pesticide residues, pharmacokinetics, protein/peptide chemistry, nuclear chemistry, geochronological studies, archeology, petroleum industry, proteomics, lipidomics and metabolomics. Day-by-day the mass spectrometry centers/facilities in India have attracted young students for their doctoral research and other advanced research applications.

Doubly-charged ions in the planetary ionospheres: a review

This paper presents a review of the current knowledge on the doubly-charged atomic and molecular positive ions in the planetary atmospheres of the Solar System. It is focused on the terrestrial planets which have a dense atmosphere of N(2) or CO(2), i.e. Venus, the Earth and Mars, but also includes Titan, the largest satellite of Saturn, which has a dense atmosphere composed mainly of N(2) and a few percent of methane. Given the composition of these neutral atmospheres, the following species are considered: C(++), N(++), O(++), CH(4)(++), CO(++), N(2)(++), NO(++), O(2)(++), Ar(++) and CO(2)(++). We first discuss the status of their detection in the atmospheres of planets. Then, we provide a comprehensive review of their complex and original photochemistry, production and loss processes. Synthesis tables are provided for those ions, while a discussion on individual species is also provided. Methods for detecting doubly-charged ions in planetary atmospheres are presented, namely with mass-spectrometry, remote sensing and fine plasma density measurements. A section covers some original applications, like the possible effect of the presence of doubly-charged ions on the escape of an atmosphere, which is a key topic of ongoing planetary exploration, related to the evolution of a planet. The results of models, displayed in a comparative way for Venus, Earth, Mars and Titan, are discussed, as they can predict the presence of doubly-charged ions and will certainly trigger new investigations. Finally we give our view concerning next steps, challenges and needs for future studies, hoping that new scientific results will be achieved in the coming years and feed the necessary interdisciplinary exchanges amongst different scientific communities.

Fragmentation dynamics of CO(2)(3+) investigated by multiple electron capture in collisions with slow highly charged ions

Fragmentation of highly charged molecular ions or clusters consisting of more than two atoms can proceed in a one step synchronous manner where all bonds break simultaneously or sequentially by emitting one ion after the other. We separated these decay channels for the fragmentation of CO(2)(3+) ions by measuring the momenta of the ionic fragments. We show that the total energy deposited in the molecular ion is a control parameter which switches between three distinct fragmentation pathways: the sequential fragmentation in which the emission of an O(+) ion leaves a rotating CO(2+) ion behind that fragments after a time delay, the Coulomb explosion and an in-between fragmentation--the asynchronous dissociation. These mechanisms are directly distinguishable in Dalitz plots and Newton diagrams of the fragment momenta. The CO(2)(3+) ions are produced by multiple electron capture in collisions with 3.2 keV/u Ar(8+) ions.
