Abstract
A historical sketch of the MCD (magnetic circular dichroism) spectroscopy is reported in its experimental and theoretical aspects. MCPL (magnetic circularly polarized luminescence) is also considered. The main studies are presented encompassing porphyrinoid systems, aggregates and materials, as well as simple organic molecules useful for the advancement of the interpretation. The MCD of chiral systems is discussed with special attention to new studies of natural products with potential pharmaceutical valence, including Amaryllidaceae alkaloids and related isocarbostyrils. Finally, the vibrational form of MCD, called MVCD, which is recorded in the IR part of the spectrum is also discussed. A final brief note on perspectives is given.

Spectroscopic investigation on 1,2-substituted ferrocenes with only planar chirality: How chiroptical data are related to absolute configuration and to substituents. SPECTROCHIMICA ACTA. Abstract
Single enantiomers of three 1,2-substituted ferrocene derivatives, i.e. 1-methoxymethyl-2-hydroxymethylferrocene (1), 1-formyl-2-hydroxymethylferrocene (2) and 1-iodo-2-hydroxymethylferrocene (3), sharing the common hydroxymethyl substituent and the presence of planar chirality only, were investigated for their spectroscopic (IR and UV) and chiroptical (VCD and ECD) properties. Both enantiomers of 1 were obtained for the first time in optically pure form by lipase-catalyzed kinetic resolution of the corresponding racemate (±)-1 and separately converted into formyl derivatives (+)-2 and (-)-2. The experimental spectroscopic and chiroptical data were compared with DFT calculated spectra and excellent correspondence was found for all compounds, allowing one to confirm the previously assigned absolute configurations. The common features in the VCD spectra of a doublet between 940 and 965 cm-1 and the short-wavelength (about 200 nm) doublet and the longest wavelength band in the ECD spectra were analyzed to test whether they may be taken as markers of the absolute configuration (AC). The predominance of conformers with intramolecular hydrogen bond for the first two investigated compounds is predicted by conformational analysis and also confirmed by NMR.

Abstract
Bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane-2,6-dione (1) and bicyclo[3.3.1]nona-3,7-diene-2,6-dione (2) have been examined by vibrational circular dichroism (VCD), which, as for most C2-symmetric systems, exhibits strong VCD signals. In the case of 2, VCD signals are stronger and sharper with several bisignate doublets; for 1, signals are less intense and broader. The VCD and IR spectra are excellently predicted by DFT calculations: only one conformer is present for 2, while for 1, three main conformers, related through concerted skeleton torsional motions are present (two of them being interchanged by C2-rotation). The VCD spectrum shows specific features for the different conformers, such that correct population factors are crucial for reproducing experimental data. Also, the TD-DFT prediction of ECD (electronic circular dichroism) spectra is good. By comparing the spectroscopic signature of the two molecules (both VCD and ECD) and by careful analysis of the theoretical results, the role of the C=C double bond in compound (2) is evidenced. The double bond contributes toward enhancing the CD response both electronically and vibrationally.

Abstract
Ferrocenes bearing chiral pendants are investigated through VCD and ECD. The VCD spectra are best interpreted by GVPT2-anharmonic DFT calculations. Diagnostic bands related to the absolute configuration of the title compounds are found in both kinds of spectra.

Abstract
Elucidation of absolute configuration of chiral molecules including structurally complex natural products remains a challenging problem in organic chemistry. A reliable method for assigning the absolute stereostructure is to combine the experimental circular dichroism (CD) techniques such as electronic and vibrational CD (ECD and VCD), with quantum mechanics (QM) ECD and VCD calculations. The traditional QM methods as well as their continuing developments make them more applicable with accuracy. Taking some chiral natural products with diverse conformations as examples, this review describes the basic concepts and new developments of QM approaches for ECD and VCD calculations in solution and solid states.

Abstract
Employing VCD spectroscopy, we demonstrate that the structural behavior of the oligomers Boc-(L-Phe-L-Oxd)(n)-OBn is similar from n = 2 to n = 6; ab initio calculations for the n = 1 case provide physical insight into the conformational properties. Further information is gained by IR, (1)H NMR, and ECD spectroscopies. ECD spectra suggest the presence of different conformations between n = 1 on one side and longer chain foldamers on the other side. VCD and absorption IR spectra in methanol solutions can be interpreted as indicative of a PPII structure. In the case of Boc-L-Phe-L-Oxd-OBn, VCD spectra in CCl(4) and detailed DFT computational analysis allow one to demonstrate that the most populated conformers exhibit backbone dihedral angles similar to those of a PPII geometry. This is a remarkable outcome, as we had previously demonstrated that the Boc-(L-Ala-D-Oxd)(n)-OBn series folds in a β-band ribbon spiral that is a subtype of the 3(10) helix.

Abstract
The near infrared (NIR) absorption and NIR-vibrational circular dichroism (NIR-VCD) spectra of dilute solutions of the two enantiomers of endo-borneol have been measured in the first OH-stretching overtone region (1600-1300 nm). By density functional theory (DFT) we calculate mechanical parameters, i.e. the harmonic mechanical frequency and the anharmonicity constant for the OH stretching, and anharmonic electrical parameters; i.e. the dependence on OH-bond length of atomic polar tensors and atomic axial tensors. We evaluate transition integrals for the calculations of rotational and dipole strengths by Morse anharmonic wavefunctions depending on mechanical harmonic frequencies and mechanical anharmonicity parameters that are calculated ab initio. Experimental and calculated spectra compare quite well and this fact allows us to associate differently signed NIR-VCD features with different conformational states of the OH-bond. Absorption features for the fundamental and for the second overtone of the OH stretching are also compared with experiment.
