Abstract
Atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are carried out to examine the effect of molecular weight Mw (= 0.6, 0.86, 1.12, and 2.15 kDa) and pH (or equivalently, degree of ionization, α+ = 0, 50, and 100%) on the structure, state of hydration, and dynamics of linear and branched poly(ethylene imine) (PEI) chains in infinitely dilute salt-free aqueous solutions. It is found that the degree of ionization is the key factor determining the type of molecular conformation adopted by PEI, regardless of molecular architecture and chain length, resulting in a stable trans conformation for fully ionized solutions and in a stable gauche+/gauche- state for neutral or alternate ionized ones; in the latter case, a strong electrolyte behavior is verified for both linear and branched PEI. Linear PEI is observed to be significantly stiffer than branched PEI of the same molecular weight at 100% degree of ionization, but the effect subsides as the degree of ionization decreases. Also, linear PEI diffuses markedly slower than branched PEI of the same Mw. From the MD results, scaling exponents are deduced and reported for the conformation, solvent-accessible surface area, and dynamics of the two different PEI structures with Mw.

Abstract
Directed self-assembly of polymers on chemically homogeneous and heterogeneous patterns is of considerable interest for nanolithography and nanofluidic devices. By employing dissipative particle dynamics (DPD) technology, we explore the nanoscale phase separation of comb-like block copolymers (CBCPs) confined at chemically homogeneous and heterogeneous substrates. Herein, the geometric and energetic influences of striped substrates on the microphases are firstly studied using various geometries of annular stripes for the heterogeneous substrates. Different parameters including the stripe geometry, substrate selectivity, and film thickness are studied systematically. T-Junction lamellae and acclivitous alignment are achieved on the heterogeneous substrates because of the synergy of geometrical effects of the striped pattern from heterogeneous substrates together with weak preference of the substrates toward one of the CBCP components. In this study, we provide a detailed understanding of microphase separation of CBCPs on the heterogeneous substrates, and the approach outlined in the present study offers a crucial tool for experimentalists to design CBCP thin films with complex device-oriented structures.

Abstract
A dielectric spectroscopy study on a polyelectrolyte in aqueous solutions, which contains hydrophobic groups in part of the side chains poly(acrylic acid)-graft-poly(ethylene oxide)-graft-dodecyl (PAA-g-PEO-g-dodecyl) is reported. A refined double layer polarization model was proposed to analyze the double dielectric relaxations in the dielectric spectra. Various electrical and structural parameters of the copolymers were obtained. Besides the crossover concentration, another turning point around 4 mg mL-1 was identified through the analysis of all the dielectrical parameters including dielectric increment, relaxation time and correlation length. According to the scaling relationship between the correlation length and concentration, a necklace-like structure was predicted. In addition, 4 mg mL-1 was proven to be the transition point between string-controlling with bead-controlling structure of the chains. In addition, the fraction of effective charges on the chains was illustrated by Ito's counter-ions fluctuation theory, as well as its linear dependence relationship with the zeta potential. Meanwhile, the counter-ions condensation behavior was consistent with the avalanche-like trend, which was predicted by theory for a hydrophobic polyelectrolyte with a necklace conformation. The results demonstrated that the electrostatic interactions were the main driving force of the necklace-like structure with pendant globules when the string-controlling structure was below 4 mg mL-1. While hydrophobic interactions are the main driving force of the structure of bead-controlling above 4 mg mL-1.

Abstract
Comb-like polycarboxylate ether (PCE) molecules with different content of methyl groups substituted on backbone and different location of methyl groups substituted on the side chains, respectively, were designed and were studied in explicit salt solutions by all-atom molecular dynamics simulations. Methyl groups substituted on the backbone of PCE have a great effect on the conformation of PCE. Stiffness of charged backbone was not only affected by the rotational freedom but also the electrostatic repulsion between the charged COO- groups. The interaction of counterions (Na+) with COO- groups for PCE3 (with part of AA substituted by MAA on the backbone) was stronger and the screen effect was great, which decided the smaller size of PCE3. The interaction between water and COO- groups was strong regardless of the content of AA substituted by MAA on the backbone. The effect of methyl groups substituted on the different location of side chains on the conformation of PCE was less than that of methyl groups substituted on the backbone. The equilibrium sizes of the four PCE molecules with methyl groups substituted on the side chains were similar. Abstract
Structural behavior of complexes formed by a charged and branched copolymer and an oppositely charged and linear polyion was examined by Monte Carlo simulations employing a coarse-grained bead-spring model. The fractional bead charge and the branching density were systematically varied; the former between 0e and 1e and the latter such that both the comb-polymer and the bottle-brush limits were included. The number of beads of the main chain of the branched copolymer and of the linear polyion was always kept constant and equal, and a single side-chain length was used. Our analysis involved characterization of the complex as well as investigation of size, shape, and flexibility of the charged moieties. An interplay between Coulomb interaction and side-chain repulsion governed the structure of the polyion complex. At strong Coulomb interaction, the complexes underwent a gradual transition from a globular structure at low branching density to an extended one at high branching density. As the electrostatic coupling was decreased, the transition was smoothened and shifted to lower branching density, and, eventually, a behavior similar to that found for neutral branched polymer was observed. Structural analogies and dissimilarities with uncharged branched polymers in poor solutions are discussed.

Abstract
Complexes formed by one charged and branched copolymer with an oppositely charged and linear polyion have been investigated by Monte Carlo simulations. A coarse-grained description has been used, in which the main chain of the branched polyion and the linear polyion possess the same absolute charge and charge density. The spatial extension and other structural properties, such as bond-angle orientational correlation function, asphericity, and scaling analysis of formed complexes, at varying branching density and side-chain length of the branched polyion, have been explored. In particular, the balance between cohesive Coulomb attraction and side-chain repulsions resulted in two main structures of a polyion complex. These structures are (i) a globular polyion core surrounded by side chains appearing at low branching density and (ii) an extended polyion core with side chains still being expelled at high branching density. The globule-to-extended transition occurred at a crossover branching density being practically independent of the side chain length.

Abstract
We present evidence from small-angle X-ray scattering synchrotron experiments that porcine stomach mucin (MUC6) contains a double-globular comb structure. Analysis of the amino acid sequence of the peptide comb backbone indicates that the globular structure is determined by both the charge and hydrophobicity of the amino acids and the placement of the short hydrophilic carbohydrate side chains (approximately 2.5 nm). The double-globular structure is, thus, due to a block copolymer type hydrophobic polyampholyte charge instability in contrast to the random copolymer instabilities observed previously with synthetic polyelectrolytes (particularly polystyrene sulfonates). Careful filtering was required to exclude multimonomer aggregates from the X-ray measurements. A double Guinier analysis ( R g approximately 26 nm) and a double power law fit are consistent with two globules per chain in low salt conditions. The average radius of the globules is approximately 10 nm in salt- free condition (double Guinier fit) and the average distance of intrachain separation of the globules is 48 nm. The addition of salt causes a significant decrease in the radius of gyration (14 nm 100 mM NaCl) of the chains and is attributed to the contraction of the glycosylated peptide spacer between the two globules (the globular size continues to be approximately 10 nm and the globule separation is then 18 nm). Without salt, the scaling of the semidilute mesh size (xi) as a function of the mucin concentration (c) is xi approximately c (-0.45)compared with xi approximately c (-0.28) in high salt conditions, highlighting the globular nature of the chains. In contrast, hydrophilic flexible polyelectrolytes have a stronger concentration dependence of xi when excess salt is added.
