Nonadiabatic Proton/Deuteron Transfer within the Benzophenone−Triethylamine Triplet Contact Radical Ion Pair: Exploration of the Influence of Structure upon Reaction

Escape of anions from geminate recombination in THF due to charge delocalization

Geminate recombination of 24 radical anions (M˙^-) with solvated protons (RH₂⁺) was studied in tetrahydrofuran (THF) with pulse radiolysis. The recombination has two steps: (1) diffusion of M˙^- and RH₂⁺ together to form intimate (contact and solvent separated) ion pairs, driven by Coulomb attraction; (2) annihilation of anions due to proton transfer (PT) from RH₂⁺ to M˙^-. The non-exponential time-dependence of the geminate diffusion was determined. For all molecules protonated on O or N atoms the subsequent PT step is too fast (<0.2 ns) to measure, except for the anion of TCNE which did not undergo proton transfer. PT to C atoms was as slow as 70 ns and was always slow enough to be observable. A possible effect of charge delocalization on the PT rates could not be clearly separated from other factors. For 21 of the 24 molecules studied here, a free ion yield (71.6 ± 6.2 nmol J^-1) comprising ∼29% of the total, was formed. This yield of "Type I" free ions is independent of the PT rate because it arises entirely by escape from the initial distribution of ion pair distances without forming intimate ion pairs. Three anions of oligo(9,9-dihexyl)fluorenes, F_n˙^- (n = 2-4) were able to escape from intimate ion-pairs to form additional yields of "Type II" free ions with escape rate constants near 3 × 10⁶ s^-1. These experiments find no evidence for an inverted region for proton transfer.

Structure-reactivity effects on primary deuterium isotope effects on protonation of ring-substituted alpha-methoxystyrenes

Primary product isotope effects (PIEs) on L(+) and carboxylic acid catalyzed protonation of ring-substituted alpha-methoxystyrenes (X-1) to form oxocarbenium ions X-2(+) in 50/50 (v/v) HOH/DOD were calculated from the yields of the alpha-CH(3) and alpha-CH(2)D labeled ketone products, determined by (1)H NMR. A plot of PIE against reaction driving force shows a maximum PIE of 8.7 for protonation of 4-MeO-1 by Cl(2)CHCOOH (DeltaG(o) = 1.0 kcal/mol). The PIE decreases to 8.1 for protonation of 4-MeO-1 by L(3)O(+) (DeltaG(o) = -2.8 kcal/mol) and to 5.1 for protonation of 3,5-di-NO(2)-1 by MeOCH(2)COOH (DeltaG(o) = 13.1 kcal/mol). The PIE maximum is around DeltaG(o) = 0. Arrhenius-type plots of PIEs on protonation of 4-MeO-1 and 3,5-di-NO(2)-1 by L(3)O(+) and on protonation of X-1 by MeOCH(2)COOH in 50/50 (v/v) HOH/DOD give similar slopes and intercepts. These were used to calculate values of [(E(a))(H) - (E(a))(D)] = -1.2 kcal/mol and (A(H)/A(D)) = 1.0 for the difference in activation energy for reactions of A-H and A-D and for the limiting PIE at infinite temperature, respectively. These parameters are consistent with reaction of the hydron over an energy barrier. There is no evidence for quantum mechanical tunneling of the hydron through the barrier. These PIEs suggest that the transferred hydron at the transition state lies roughly equidistant between the acid donor and base acceptor and contrast with the recently published Brønsted parameters [Richard, J. P.; Williams, K. B. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2007, 129, 6952-6961], which are consistent with a product-like transition state. An explanation for these seemingly contradictory results is discussed.

A theory-experiment conundrum for proton transfer

For the past 60 years, the framework for understanding the kinetic behavior of proton transfer has been transition state theory. Found throughout textbooks, this theory, along with the Bell tunneling correction, serves as the standard model for the analysis of proton/hydrogen atom/hydride transfer. In comparison, a different theoretical model has recently emerged, one which proposes that the transition state occurs within the solvent coordinate, not the proton transfer coordinate, and proton transfer proceeds either adiabatically or nonadiabatically toward product formation. This Account discusses the central tenets of the new theoretical model of proton transfer, contrasts these with the standard transition state model, and presents a discrepancy that has arisen between our experimental studies on a nonadiabatic system and the current understanding of proton transfer. Transition state theory posits that in the proton transfer coordinate, the proton must surmount an electronic barrier prior to the formation of the product. This process is thermally activated, and the energy of activation is associated with the degree of bond making and bond breaking in the transition state. In the new model, the reaction path involves the initial fluctuation of the solvent, serving to bring the reactant state and the product state into resonance, at which time the proton is transferred either adiabatically or nonadiabatically to form the product. If this theory is correct, then all of the deductions derived from the standard model regarding the nature of the proton transfer process are called into question. For weakly hydrogen-bonded complexes, two sets of experiments are presented supporting the proposal that proton transfer occurs as a nonadiabatic process. In these studies, the correlation of rate constants to driving force reveals both a normal region and an inverted region for proton transfer. Yet, the experimentally observed kinetic behavior does not align with the recent theoretical formulation for nonadiabatic proton transfer, underscoring the gap in the collective understanding of proton transfer phenomena.
