Abstract
Curcumin (Cur) is a natural pigment with excellent biological activity. The poor stability and insolubility of Cur in water severely limit its application. Therefore, to overcome these dilemmas which are big hindrances in their application, a novel derivative (COCS-Cur) was prepared by the esterification reaction of carboxylated chitosan (COCS) and Cur. The structure and properties of conjugate were determined through a series of characterizations. The derivatives had excellent solubility as well as stability. In addition, antioxidant and photodynamic antibacterial experiments proved that COCS-Cur had the excellent free radical scavenging ability and photodynamic antibacterial activity. The derivatives presented a better antibacterial effect on Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) than Escherichia coli (E. coli). Noteworthy, the COCS-Cur derivatives showed no obvious toxicity which makes them a stronger contender and potential antimicrobial agent or functional nutrient for application in the food industry.

Abstract
We report the phase diagram for the binary creatine-citric acid mixture which features a stable and broad eutectic region. Combinations containing 10-60 mol% creatine yield a deep eutectic solvent with a glass transition temperature at 270 K. Addition of up to 70 mol% water to the binary mixture affords retention of the eutectic nature and a handle to vary solvent viscosity and polarity.

Abstract
Complex formation between pyrene (Py) and N,N-dimethylaniline (DMA) is presented in a deep eutectic solvent constituting of tetra-n-butylammonium chloride (TBAC) and n-decanoic acid (DA) in a 1:2 mol ratio, respectively, named TBAC:DA. The addition of DMA to a Py solution of TBAC:DA results in the formation of a fluorescent Py-DMA charge-transfer complex, which is manifested via a broad structureless bathochromically shifted band centered at 550(±2) nm. The solvatochromic nature of the Py-DMA fluorescent complex indicates the solvent polarity of TBAC:DA to be higher than that of methanol. The absence of a negative pre-exponential factor in the intensity decay at 550 nm combined with the excitation scans implies the presence of weak interaction between Py and DMA in the ground-state, leading to the rapid formation of a Py-DMA complex possibly at a sub-nanosecond time scale. The Stern-Volmer quenching constant (KSV) varies from 53(±2) to 96(±1) M-1, and the bimolecular quenching rate constant (kq) varies from 3.0(±0.4) × 108 to 8.8(±1.3) × 108 M-1 s-1 by increasing the temperature (T) from 283.15 to 313.15 K, implying efficient deactivation of electron-acceptor Py in the excited-state induced effectively by the electron-donor DMA within TBAC:DA. ln kq varies linearly with 1/T with an activation energy (Ea) of 26.4(±0.4) kJ mol-1. The linear behavior between kq and 1/η suggests conformity to the Stokes-Einstein relationship within TBAC:DA. The Py-DMA complex formation efficiency increases with an increase in T and reaches maxima at 298.15 K before decreasing with a further increase in T. The initial reduction in η favors Py-DMA complex formation; this effect is overcome by preferential thermal deactivation of the Py-DMA fluorescent complex as compared to that of pyrene.

Abstract
Aqueous biphasic systems (ABS) composed of ionic liquids (ILs) and conventional salts have been largely investigated and successfully used in separation processes, for which the determination of the corresponding ternary phase diagrams is a prerequisite. However, due the large number of ILs that can be prepared and their high structural versatility, it is impossible to experimentally cover and characterize all possible combinations of ILs and salts that may form ABS. The development of tools for the prediction and design of IL-based ABS is thus a crucial requirement. Based on a large compilation of experimental data, a correlation describing the formation of IL-based ABS is shown here, based on the hydrogen-bonding interaction energies of ILs (EHB) obtained by the COnductor-like Screening MOdel for Real Solvents (COSMO-RS) and the molar entropy of hydration of the salt ions. The ability of the proposed model to predict the formation of novel IL-based ABS is further ascertained.

Abstract
To carry out a chemical reaction between the reactants with largely different polarities, it becomes important to have a reaction medium that possesses both the polar and nonpolar solvation environments. In an attempt to explore the reaction media with such unique polarity properties, the present study provides a thorough understanding of the bipolar solvent media using the aqueous mixtures of amino acid anion-based ionic liquids. The highly polar behavior of the binary mixtures used in the study has been ascribed to the pure ionic liquid state. However, the less polar solvation shells have been attributed to the presence of a neutral form of the anions. Addition of water in the amino acid anion-based ionic liquids causes the protonation of a certain fraction of the anions of the ionic liquids, resulting into the formation of a less polar nonionic protonated form along with the highly polar natural anionic form. This results into the formation of two solvation spheres with different polarities, which can be seen very clearly from the presence of two absorption bands (lower wavelength absorption band and higher wavelength absorption band) in the UV-vis absorption spectrum of Reichardt's ET(30) dye and two emission bands (lower wavelength emission band and higher wavelength emission band) in the fluorescence emission spectrum of C481 dye. The values of the ETN polarity parameter corresponding to the two solvation shells having different polarities have been calculated from the deconvoluted absorption spectra of the Reichardt's ET(30) and were analyzed in three amino acid anion-based ionic liquids. Generation of the neutral form of anions in the aqueous mixtures formed via a protonation transfer reaction has been confirmed by the 1H NMR spectroscopy and UV-vis absorption spectrum of 18DHAQ dye. The study also establishes that the Reichardt's ET(30) dye can be used as a valid polarity probe to study the solvatochromic behavior of the binary mixtures of amino acid-based ionic liquids.

Abstract
The impact of temperature-induced changes in solvent dynamics on the diffusion coefficient and standard rate constant k0 for heterogeneous electron transfer (ET) of ethylferrocene (EFc) in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate ([BMIM][PF6 ]) is investigated. The results are analysed to understand the impact of solvent-dynamic control, solute-solvent interactions and solvent friction on the transport of redox probes and k0 . Concentration dependence of the diffusion coefficient of EFc in [BMIM][PF6 ] is observed. This is attributed to the solute-induced enhancement of the structural organisation of the ionic liquid (IL), which is supported by the concentration-dependent UV/Vis absorption and photoluminescence responses of EFc/[BMIM][PF6 ] solutions. Similar values of the activation energies for mass transport and ET and a linear relationship between the diffusion coefficient and the heterogeneous ET rate is observed. The ratio between the diffusion coefficient and the heterogeneous rate constant allows a characteristic length Ld , which is temperature-independent, to be introduced. The presented results clearly establish that mass transport and heterogeneous ET of redox probes are strongly correlated in ILs. It is proposed that the apparent kinetics of heterogeneous ET reactions in ILs can be explained in terms of their impact on thermal equilibration, energy dissipation and thermal excitation of redox-active probes.

Abstract
Physico-chemical properties of liquid mixtures in general display large deviations from linear behaviour, arising out of complex specific and non-specific intermolecular interactions. The polarity of liquid mixtures displaying large positive and negative deviations can be minimized and linear mixing can be achieved in liquids using a pseudo-solvent methodology. The work described herein is designed to investigate the influence of different physical parameters on the linear pseudo-solvent composition in ionic liquid mixtures. For this purpose, we have determined the deviations from linearity, ΔE values (defined as given by ) for binary mixtures of a variety of ionic liquids, including two molecular solvents, DMSO and formamide. Firstly, the investigations were carried out in three 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium cation based aprotic ionic liquids and the roles of anionic structure and hydrogen bond acceptor basicities (β values) of the ionic liquids were determined. The influence of the cationic structure, i.e., the hydrogen bond donor acidity (α values) and non-associative nature of the ionic liquids, was determined using C2-methylated analogs, 1-butyl-2,3-dimethylimidazolium cation based ionic liquids. The role of the protic nature of ionic liquids was studied in two protic ionic liquids, viz., 1-methylimidazolium formate and 1-methylimidazolium acetate. The effects of the temperature, pseudo-solvent structure and solvatochromic probe structure on the ΔE values were also explored.

Abstract
Deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have shown potential as promising environmentally friendly alternatives to conventional solvents. Many common and popular DESs are obtained by simply mixing a salt and a H-bond donor. Properties of such a DES depend on its constituents. Change in temperature and addition of water, a benign cosolvent, can change the physicochemical properties of DESs. The effect of changing temperature and addition of water on solvatochromic probe behavior within three DESs formed from choline chloride combined with 1,2-ethanediol, glycerol, and urea, respectively, in 1:2 mol ratios termed ethaline, glyceline, and reline is presented. Increase in temperature results in reduced H-bond donating acidity of the DESs. Dipolarity/polarizability and H-bond accepting basicity do not change with changing temperature of the DESs. The response of the fluorescence probe pyrene also indicates a decrease in the polarity of the DESs as temperature is increased. Addition of water to DES results in increased dipolarity/polarizability and a decrease in H-bond accepting basicity. Except for pyrene, solvatochromic probes exhibit responses close to those predicted from ideal-additive behavior with slight preferential solvation by DES within the aqueous mixtures. Pyrene response reveals significant preferential solvation by DES and/or the presence of solvent-solvent interactions, especially within aqueous mixtures of ethaline and glyceline, the DESs constituted of H-bond donors with hydroxyl functionalities. FTIR absorbance and Raman spectroscopic measurements of aqueous DES mixtures support the outcomes from solvatochromic probe responses. Aqueous mixtures of ethaline and glyceline possess relatively more interspecies H-bonds as compared to aqueous mixtures of reline, where interstitial accommodation of water within the reline molecular network appears to dominate.

Abstract
In the past decade, ionic liquids (ILs) have been the focus of intensive research regarding their use as potential and alternative solvents in many chemical applications. Targeting their effectiveness, recent investigations have attempted to establish polarity scales capable of ranking ILs according to their chemical behaviours. However, some major drawbacks have been found since polarity scales only report relative ranks because they depend on the set of probe dyes used, and they are sensitive to measurement conditions, such as purity levels of the ILs and procedures employed. Due to all these difficulties it is of crucial importance to find alternative and/or predictive methods and to evaluate them as a priori approaches capable of providing the chemical properties of ILs. Furthermore, the large number of ILs available makes their experimental characterization, usually achieved by a trial and error methodology, burdensome. In this context, we firstly evaluated COSMO-RS, COnductor-like Screening MOdel for Real Solvents, as an alternative tool to estimate the hydrogen-bond basicity of ILs. After demonstrating a straight-line correlation between the experimental hydrogen-bond basicity values and the COSMO-RS hydrogen-bonding energies in equimolar cation-anion pairs, an extended scale for the hydrogen-bond accepting ability of IL anions is proposed here. This new ranking of the ILs' chemical properties opens the possibility to pre-screen appropriate ILs (even those not yet synthesized) for a given task or application.

Abstract
Gaussian-based HF/MP2 and DFT/B3LYP methods have been explored to study the microsolvation of glycine anion with water, [Gly]–(W)n, and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium glycine ionic liquid (IL) with water, [EMIM][Gly](W)n, n = 1–6 and 12. The water molecules are either isolated or aggregated around [Gly]– and [EMIM][Gly]. Their electronic structures have been calculated clearly to verify the molecular state of H2O and the results were used to compare with experiments. The water effect on the interaction energies and local packing of [EMIM][Gly] is considered. We identified an important factor: the variation of [EMIM][Gly](W)n polarity with the different numbers of H2O. As the amount of H2O increases, the polar network is continuously broken up. The dipole moments are changed to be lowest when the H-bonding ability of [Gly]– is almost saturated. Meanwhile, the nonpolar groups of the cation form an enhanced aggregation. Such observation can provide initial insights for the experimental nanostructural evolution in the IL–water mixtures.

Abstract
We report the synthesis of polymer microcapsules by direct one-pot free radical random copolymerization approach. Urethane methacrylate comb monomers having pendant pyrene (Py) and 3-pentadecyl phenol (PDP) units were copolymerized in a random manner using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as free radical initiator in dimethylformamide (DMF) as solvent. These copolymers and corresponding homopolymers spontaneously self-organized into microspheres upon drop casting from solvents like DMF and tetrahydrofuran (THF). Stable microspheres were obtained in water by dialyzing THF solution of the polymers against water in dialysis bags with molecular weight cutoff of ∼2000. The hollow nature of the spheres was confirmed by rhodamine B (RhB) encapsulation followed by Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) based fluorescence emission from RhB upon exciting pyrene. The microenvironment inside the capsule was probed by following the I(1)/I(3) ratio of pyrene emission as well as RhB release as a function of temperature. The RhB encapsulated in the pyrene homopolymer PIHP-100Py capsules experienced strong donor-acceptor interaction and did not undergo complete release even at high temperature (85 °C). The encapsulated RhB from the copolymers with low pyrene incorporation was released almost fully upon heating beyond 50 °C. Pyrene moieties in the PIHP-100Py were shielded from surrounding water and experienced a hydrophobic environment, whereas in the low pyrene incorporated copolymer the PDP units were better shielded from the hydrophilic environment. This work represents a simple approach to produce polymer hollow capsules, and the varying pyrene incorporation was used to trace the microenvironment inside the capsules.

Abstract
Room temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) are emerging as attractive and green solvents for lignocellulosic biomass pretreatment. The unique solvating properties of RTILs foster the disruption of the 3D network structure of lignin, cellulose, and hemicellulose, which allows high yields of fermentable sugars to be produced in subsequent enzymatic hydrolysis. In the current review, we summarize the physicochemical properties of RTILs that make them effective solvents for lignocellulose pretreatment including mechanisms of interaction between lignocellulosic biomass subcomponents and RTILs. We also highlight several recent strategies that exploit RTILs and generate high yields of fermentable sugars suitable for downstream biofuel production, and address new opportunities for use of lignocellulosic components, including lignin. Finally, we address some of the challenges that remain before large-scale use of RTILs may be achieved.

Abstract
Recently, a new family of ionic liquids based on oligoether carboxylates was introduced. 2,5,8,11-Tetraoxatridecan-13-oate (TOTO) was shown to form room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs) even with small alkali ions such as lithium and sodium. However, the alkali TOTO salts suffer from their extremely high viscosities and relatively low conductivities. Therefore, we replaced the alkali cations by tetraalkylammonium (TAA) ions and studied the TOTO salts of tetraethyl- (TEA), tetrapropyl- (TPA), and tetrabutylammonium (TBA). In addition, the environmentally benign quaternary ammonium ion choline (Ch) was included in the series. All salts were found to be ionic liquids at ambient temperatures with a glass transition typically at around -60 °C. Viscosities, conductivities, solvent polarities, and Kamlet-Taft parameters were determined as a function of temperature. When using quaternary ammonium ions, the viscosities of the resulting TOTO ionic liquids are >600 times lower, whereas conductivities increase by a factor of up to 1000 compared with their alkali counterparts. Solvent polarities further reveal that choline and TAA cations yield TOTO ionic liquids that are more polar than those obtained with the, per se, highly polar sodium ion. Results are discussed in terms of ion-pairing and structure-breaking concepts with regard to a possible complexation ability of the TOTO anion.
