Abstract
The derivatives of glucose such as glucosamine (β-D-GlcN) and N-acetyl-D-β-glucosamine (GlcNAc) are significant in several biological systems. D-GlcN has been used widely to treat osteoarthritis in humans and animal models as well as GlcNAc has been proposed as a treatment for autoimmune diseases. The DFT/B3LYP/6-311++G (d,p) method as well as QTAIM and NBO analyses were used to the acidity values of D-GlcN and GlcNAc sugars and their complexes with alkali ions in the gas phase. The Li+, Na+ and K+ prefer bi-dentate chelate in these complexes. The computed results indicate that metal ion affinity (MIA) in GlcNAc is higher than that in D-GlcN. There are direct correlations between the MIA values of D-GlcN and GlcNAc sugars and the atomic numbers of Li, Na, and K. The calculated acidity values for GlcNAc at C2-NH and C6-HO6 sites are 331 and 333 kcal mol-1, respectively. Whereas the calculated acidity values for D-GlcN at C2-NH and C6-HO6 sites are 365 and 372 kcal mol-1, respectively. The AIM and NBO analyses indicate the presence of intramolecular H-bonds in GlcNAc sugar in both its neutral form and conjugate base; whereas D-GlcN indicates intramolecular H-bonds in only its conjugate base.

Abstract
The conformations, electronic properties, and interaction energies of four chelate-based ionic liquids [Li(EA)][Tf2N], [Li(HDA)][Tf2N], [Li(DEA)][Tf2N], and [Li(DOBA)][Tf2N] have been theoretically explored. The reliability of the located conformers has been confirmed via the comparison between the simulated and experimental infrared spectra. Our results show that the N-Li and O-Li coordinate bonds in cation are elongated as the numbers of coordinate heteroatoms of alkanolamine ligands to Li(+) increased. Also the binding energies between Li(+) and ligands are increased and the interaction energies between cations and Tf2N anion are decreased. The cation-anion interaction energies follow the order of [Li(DOBA)][Tf2N] < [Li(HDA)][Tf2N] < [Li(DEA)][Tf2N] < [Li(EA)][Tf2N], which fall within the energetic ranges of conventional ionic liquids. Interestingly, the strongest stabilization orbital interactions in these ionic liquids and their cations revealed by the natural bond orbital analysis lie in the interaction between the lone pair (LP) of the coordinate heteroatoms in ligands or anion as donors and the vacant valence shell nonbonding orbital (LP*) of Li(+) as acceptors, which are very different from that of conventional ionic liquids. Moreover, the charges transferred from cations to anion are quite similar, and the charge of Li(+) is proposed for possibly predicting the order of the interaction energies of ionic liquids in series. The present study allows for the deeper understanding the differences between chelate-based ionic liquids and conventional ionic liquids.

Abstract
Amino acid ionic liquids (AAILs) have attracted significant attention in the recent literature owing to their ubiquitous applications in diversifying areas of modern chemistry, materials science, and biosciences. The present work focuses on unraveling the molecular interactions underlying AAILs. Electronic structures of ion pairs consisting of amino acid cations ([AA(+)], AA = Gly, Ala, Val, Leu, Ile, Pro, Ser, Thr) and their ester substituted derivatives [AAE(+)] interacting with nitrate anion [NO3(-)] have been obtained from the dispersion corrected M06-2x density functional theory. The formation of ion pair is accompanied by the transfer of proton from quaternary nitrogen to anion facilitated via hydrogen bonding. The [Ile], [Pro], [Ser], and [Thr] and their esters reveal relatively strong inter- as well as intramolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions. Consequently, the hierarchy in binding energies of [AA][NO3] ion pairs and their ester analogues turns out to be [Gly] > [Ala] > [Ser] ∼ [Val] ∼ [Ile] > [Leu] ∼ [Thr] > [Pro]. The work underlines how the interplay of intra- as well as intermolecular hydrogen-bonding interactions in [AA]- and [AAE]-based ILs manifest in their infrared and (1)H NMR spectra. Substitution of -OCH3 functional group in [AA][NO3] ILs lowers the melting point attributed to weaker hydrogen-bonding interactions, making them suitable for room temperature applications. As opposed to gas phase structures, the presence of solvent (DMSO) does not bring about any proton transfer in the ion pairs or their ester analogues. Calculated (1)H NMR chemical shifts of the solvated structures agree well with those from experiment. Correlations of decomposition temperatures in [AA]- and [AAE]-based ILs with binding energies and electron densities at the bond critical point(s) in molecular electron density topography, have been established.

Abstract
Externally stimuli-triggered spatially and temporally controlled gene delivery can play a pivotal role in achieving targeted gene delivery with maximized therapeutic efficacy. In this study, a photothermally controlled gene delivery carrier is developed by conjugating low molecular-weight branched polyethylenimine (BPEI) and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) via a hydrophilic polyethylene glycol (PEG) spacer. This PEG-BPEI-rGO nanocomposite forms a stable nano-sized complex with plasmid DNA (pDNA), as confirmed by physicochemical studies. For the in vitro gene transfection study, PEG-BPEI-rGO shows a higher gene transfection efficiency without observable cytotoxicity compared to unmodified controls in PC-3 and NIH/3T3 cells. Moreover, the PEG-BPEI-rGO nanocomposite demonstrates an enhanced gene transfection efficiency upon NIR irradiation, which is attributed to accelerated endosomal escape of polyplexes augmented by locally induced heat. The endosomal escaping effect of the nanocomposite is investigated using Bafilomycin A1, a proton sponge effect inhibitor. The developed photothermally controlled gene carrier has the potential for spatial and temporal site-specific gene delivery.

Abstract
Gaussian-based HF/MP2 and DFT/B3LYP methods have been explored to study the microsolvation of glycine anion with water, [Gly]–(W)n, and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium glycine ionic liquid (IL) with water, [EMIM][Gly](W)n, n = 1–6 and 12. The water molecules are either isolated or aggregated around [Gly]– and [EMIM][Gly]. Their electronic structures have been calculated clearly to verify the molecular state of H2O and the results were used to compare with experiments. The water effect on the interaction energies and local packing of [EMIM][Gly] is considered. We identified an important factor: the variation of [EMIM][Gly](W)n polarity with the different numbers of H2O. As the amount of H2O increases, the polar network is continuously broken up. The dipole moments are changed to be lowest when the H-bonding ability of [Gly]– is almost saturated. Meanwhile, the nonpolar groups of the cation form an enhanced aggregation. Such observation can provide initial insights for the experimental nanostructural evolution in the IL–water mixtures.
