Abstract
Meeting the contemporary demand for the development of functional, biocompatible, and environment friendly self-assembled structures using efficient, cost-effective, and energy-saving methods, the field of colloids has witnessed a surge in interest. Research into cationic and anionic (catanionic) surfactant combinations has gained momentum due to their distinct advantages and synergistic properties in this context. Catanionic self-assemblies have emerged as promising contenders for addressing these requirements. Catanionic self-assemblies possess high stability, adjustable surface charge, and low critical aggregation concentration. This comprehensive review article distinguishes between cationic/anionic non-equimolar and equimolar ratio mixing formation of high-salt catanionic self-assemblies known as catanionic mixture and salt-free counterparts, termed ion-pair amphiphiles, respectively. It explores diverse synthesis techniques, emphasizing the roles of solvents, salts, and pH conditions and covers both experimental and theoretical aspects of state-of-the-art catanionic self-assemblies. Additionally, the review investigates the development of multi-responsive catanionic self-assemblies using light, pH, temperature, and redox, responsive cationic/anionic amphiphiles. It provides an in-depth exploration of potential synergistic interactions and properties, underscoring their practical importance in a wide range of industrial applications. The review explores challenges like precipitation, stability and identifies knowledge gaps, creating opportunities in the dynamic catanionic self-assembly field. It aims to offer insights into the journey of catanionic self-assemblies, from inception to current status, appealing to a broad audience invested in their scientific and industrial potential.

Abstract
This study exploits higher-order micellar transition ranging from ellipsoidal to rodlike to wormlike induced by 1-octanol (C8OH) in an aqueous solution of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), characterizing phase behavior, rheology, and small-angle neutron scattering (SANS). The phase diagram for the ternary system CTAB-C8OH-water was constructed, which depicted the varied solution behavior. Such performance was further inferred from the rheology study (oscillatory-shear frequency sweep (ω) and viscosity (η)) that displayed an interesting solution behavior of CTAB solutions as a function of C8OH. It was observed that at low C8OH concentrations, the solutions appeared viscous/viscoelastic fluids that changed to an elastic gel with an infinite relaxation time at higher concentrations of C8OH, thereby confirming the existence of distinct micelle morphologies. Small-angle neutron scattering (SANS) provided various micellar parameters such as aggregation numbers (Nagg) and micellar size/shape. The experimental results were further validated with a computational simulation approach. The molecular dynamic (MD) study offered an insight into the molecular interactions and aggregation behavior through different analyses, including radial distribution function (RDF), radius of gyration (Rg), and solvent-accessible surface area (SASA).

Abstract
Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is an innovative technique for cancer treatment with minimal side effects, based on the use of a photosensitizer, oxygen, and light. Photosensitizers (PSs) have several limitations, that may limit their clinical use, like poor solubilization, self-aggregation, and lack of specific targeting, which can be addressed with the use of nanomaterials. Herein, a unique type of catansomes (CaSs) was prepared using a gemini imidazolium-based surfactant (1,3-bis[(3-octadecyl-1-imidazolio)methyl]benzene dibromide (GBIB) and a double chain surfactant, diaoctyl sodium sulfosuccinate or Aerosol OT (AOT). The formation of CaS GBIB/AOT was optimized in various ethanol/water (E/W) solvent ratios by employing a facile, quick, and most reliable solution-solution mixing method. The CaS was characterized by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and field emission gun scanning electron microscopy (FEG-SEM) techniques. The experimental results reveal that stable CaSs with a spherical shape were obtained at lower concentration (100 μM). Rose Bengal (RB), a PS of the xanthene family, was incorporated into these prepared CaSs, as proven by fluorescence spectroscopy, UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, and confocal laser scanning microscopy. Singlet oxygen (1O2) generation studies revealed the relevant role of the E/W solvent ratio as there was a 4-fold boost in the 1O2 production for GBIB/AOT in E/W = 50:50 and around 3-fold in E/W = 30:70. Also, the GBIB-rich 80:20 fraction was more efficient in increasing the 1O2 generation as compared to the AOT rich fraction (20:80). Further, their phototoxicity was tested in a water-rich solvent ratio (E/W = 30:70) against MCF-7 cells. Upon irradiation with a 532 nm laser (50 mW) for 5 min, RB@GBIB/AOT(20:80) fraction caused 50% decrease in the metabolic activity of MCF-7 cells, and RB@GBIB/AOT(80:20) fraction produced a maximum 85% decrease in cell viability. Furthermore, the enhancement in intracellular 1O2 generation by RB@GBIB/AOT, as compared to pure RB, was confirmed with singlet oxygen sensor green (SOSG). This new type of CaS based on gemini surfactants exhibiting a large amount of 1O2 generation, holds great interest for several applications, such as use in photomedicine in future.

Abstract
The influence of mixing protocol, composition, temperature, ageing and added alcohols on the characteristics of the microstructures of sodium dodecylsulfate (SDS) + cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) mixtures has been investigated in this paper. In this catanionic mixture (1 weight% total surfactant content) temperature induced microstructural transition occurs, which is (i) a micelle-to-vesicle transition (MVT) if αSDS (mole fraction of SDS) = 0.7, 0.8 or 0.9 and (ii) a vesicle-to-micelle transition (VMT) if αSDS = 0.1, 0.2 or 0.3. In the mixture of αSDS = 0.7, specific conductivity and dynamic light scattering measurements also support the occurrence of MVT. Transition electron microscopy and small angle neutron scattering measurements were also made to assess the characteristics of the microstructures. Alcohols added to the mixture of αSDS = 0.7 reduced the size of the vesicle, while only monohydric alcohols suppressed the temperature induced transition indicating that the number and location of -OH groups of the alcohols have a dramatic modulating influence on the structural transition occurring in catanionic mixtures. The influence of the alcohols is explained in terms of changes produced in the dielectric constant and hydrophobicity of the medium.

Abstract
We report the effect of surfactant addition on the optical properties of perfluorinated polyanilines synthesized through liquid-liquid interfaces. We obtained very long Stokes shifts, 205 nm, for oligomers derived from a hydrofluoroether-water system in the presence of Triton X-100 as a surfactant, and vibronic fine features from a toluene-water system.

Abstract
We have studied the photophysics and rotational diffusion of hydrophilic solute 7-(N, N'-diethylamino)coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (7-DCCA) in a room temperature ionic liquid methyltrioctylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide ([N1888 ][NTf2 ]). Comparison of activation energies of viscous flow and nonradiative decay shows that the photophysical properties of 7-DCCA are not guided by the bulk viscosity of the medium but are dependent on the specific solute solvent interaction and structural heterogeneity of the medium. The rotational relaxation behaviour of 7-DCCA in [N1888 ][NTf2] shows significant deviation from the Stokes Einstein Debye hydrodynamic model of rotational diffusion. This is indicative of the influence of specific solute solvent interaction on the rotational relaxation behaviour of 7-DCCA. Comparison of activation energy of rotational relaxation with activation energy of viscous flow clearly reinforces our assumption that the structural heterogeneity of the medium and specific solute solvent interaction plays a dominant role on the rotational diffusion instead of bulk viscosity.

Abstract
The absorption and fluorescence characteristics of biologically active coumarin derivatives 4-p-tolyloxymethyl-benzo[h]coumarin (4PTMBC) and 1-(4-iodo phenoxymethyl)-benzo[f]coumarin (1IPMBC) are studied at room temperature in a series of organic solvents and 1,4-dioxane - acetonitrile solvent mixture. The effect of pure solvents on the spectral properties are analyzed using Lippert-Mataga polarity function, Reichardt's microscopic solvent polarity parameter, Kamlet's and Catalan's multiple linear regression approaches. Both general solute - solvent interactions and hydrogen bonding interactions are operative in these systems. However, the contribution of hydrogen bonding interactions is less compared to general solute-solvent interactions. The solvatochromic correlations are used to estimate excited state dipole moment using experimentally determined ground state dipole moment. The bathochromic shift of the emission spectra and the increase in excited state dipole moment indicate the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) character in the emitting singlet state. The solvation studies in 1,4-dioxane - acetonitrile solvent mixture suggest that these dyes are preferentially solvated by 1,4-dioxane.

Abstract
Photophysical properties of new coumarin-3-carbaldehyde (dihydrodinaphtho[2,1-c:1',2'-e]azepin-N-yl)imines bearing dimethylamino and methoxy groups at position 7 of coumarin were investigated. Dimethylamino derivative exhibits different solvent polarity dependence of fluorescent characteristics for nonpolar, medium polar and highly polar solvents. This effect can be rationalized by diverse charge distribution in the singlet excited state due to its different stabilization by solvation in the solvents of particular group. While 2-fold higher values of Stokes shift were observed for methoxy derivative, its quantum yield of fluorescence is much lower due to high nonradiative decay rate constant of the excited state.
