Abstract
The synthesis of gwanakoside A, a chlorinated naphthol bis-glycoside, and its analogues was achieved through stepwise chlorination and donor-equivalent controlled regioselective phenol glycosylation with glycosyl N-phenyltrifluoroacetimidates as donors. Gwanakoside A displayed considerable inhibitory effects against various cancer cells and Staphylococcus aureus strains.

Abstract
Experimental studies suggest that the compound (NHCbz )2 C2 H2 can be considered as a complex of a distorted acetylene fragment which is stabilised by benzoannelated N-heterocyclic carbene ligands (NHCbz )→(C2 H2 )←(NHCbz ). A quantum chemical analysis of the electronic structures shows that the description with dative bonds is more favourable than with electron-sharing double bonds (NHCbz )=(C2 H2 )=(NHCbz ).

Abstract
Ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) is the cornerstone of photosynthetic carbon assimilation because it catalyses the fixation of CO2 onto ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate (RuBP). The enzyme also catalyses RuBP oxygenation, thereby evolving phosphoglycolate which is recycled along the photorespiratory pathway. Oxygenation is quantitatively important, because under ordinary gaseous conditions, more than one third of RuBP molecules are oxygenated rather than carboxylated. However, contrary to carboxylation, the chemical mechanism of oxygenation is not well known, and little progress has been made since the early 80s. Here, I review recent experimental data that provide some new insights into the reaction mechanism, and carry out simple calculations of kinetic parameters. Isotope effects suggest that oxygenation is less likely initiated by a redox phenomenon (such as superoxide production) and more likely involves concerted chemical events that imply interactions with protons. A possible energy profile of the reaction is drawn which suggests that the generation of the oxygenated reaction intermediate (peroxide) is irreversible. Possible changes in oxygenation-associated rate constants between Rubisco forms are discussed.

Abstract
Siloxy-N-silylketenimines generated in situ from O-silyl cyanohydrins were converted to α-ketoamides by brief exposure to air or oxygen. Oxidation under extremely mild conditions can be explained by assuming the intermediacy of a 3-imino-1,2-dioxetane derivative generated via triplet-singlet intersystem crossing after the reaction of siloxy-N-silylketenimines with triplet oxygen.

Abstract
Theoretical calculations are used to explore a plausible mechanism for oxidative cleavage of cholesterol mediated by two ground-state O2 molecules. It is shown that cholesterol can form a stable pre-complex with the two triplet dioxygen molecules, which could be further stabilized in an enzyme environment by methionine (modelled here as Me2S). Triplet O2 can then react to form a metastable biradical species that is then further stabilized by reaction with a second triplet O2, resulting in an intermediate that undergoes an intersystem crossing to form a diperoxy intermediate. This in turn is reduced to the final cholesterol secosterol aldehyde product by the same methionine, which may provide an explanation for the presence of methionine sulfoxide fractions in Aβ amyloid peptide. The mechanistic theozyme model predicts an energetically viable pathway that is unusual in that triplet oxygen is normally considered to be unreactive in this context unless first excited to the singlet state. Although we show that the same reaction can also proceed via photosensitization of the complex if an appropriate cofactor is available, the energetics for the triplet oxygen reaction are competitive. Reactivity studies revealed that the reaction can also occur with other unsaturated substrates, with the lowest barriers occurring with more nucleophilic alkenes, or by rendering the 3O2 more electrophilic via non-covalent interactions with Me2S.

Abstract
The abundant sesquiterpene β-caryophyllene can be epoxidized by molecular oxygen in the absence of any catalyst. In polar aprotic solvents, the reaction proceeds smoothly with epoxide selectivities exceeding 70 %. A mechanistic study has been performed and the possible involvement of free radical, spin inversion, and electron transfer mechanisms is evaluated using experimental and computational methods. The experimental data-including a detailed reaction product analysis, studies on reaction parameters, solvent effects, additives and an electrochemical investigation-all support that the spontaneous epoxidation of β-caryophyllene constitutes a rare case of unsensitized electron transfer from an olefin to triplet oxygen under mild conditions (80 °C, 1 bar O2 ). As initiation of the oxygenation reaction, the formation of a caryophyllene-derived radical cation via electron transfer is proposed. This radical cation reacts with triplet oxygen to a dioxetane via a chain mechanism with chain lengths exceeding 100 under optimized conditions. The dioxetane then acts as an in situ-formed epoxidizing agent. Under nitrogen atmosphere, the presence of a one-electron acceptor leads to the selective isomerization of β-caryophyllene to isocaryophyllene. Observations indicate that this isomerization reaction is a novel and elegant synthetic pathway to isocaryophyllene.
