Fast Field-Cycling NMR Relaxometry Study of Chiral and Nonchiral Nematic Liquid Crystals

Exploring Crystal-Phase Molecular Dynamics of the Low-Viscous Mesogen 6CHBT: A Combined FFC and High-Field NMR Relaxometry Investigation

The molecular dynamics study of thermotropic mesogens exhibiting the crystal phases is valuable in unraveling the complex global (collective) and local (noncollective) motions executed by liquid crystal molecules, which would further advance the existing knowledge on orientationally disordered crystalline (ODIC) phases. Toward the fulfillment of such a task, a combined nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) relaxometry approach employing the fast field cycling (FFC) NMR (10 kHz-30 MHz) and high-field pulsed NMR (400 MHz) techniques is utilized to sample the broad frequency range offered by molecular motions in the crystal phase of 4-(trans-4'-n-hexylcyclohexyl)-isothiocyanatobenzene (6CHBT). The validity of the observed relaxation data is tested and interpreted by the Bloembergen-Purcell-Pound (BPP) model involving the superposition of four mutually independent Lorentzian spectral densities, reflecting molecular dynamical processes on different time scales. The salient feature of the detailed analysis reveals that the lengthening of temporal dynamics in the crystal phase due to molecular rotations by jumps, which are of intermolecular origin, is evident and further supports the presence of collective-like local dynamics. The analysis does permit decoupling of the molecular reorientations about their short axes (∼100 ns) as well as long axes (∼50 ns) and methyl group rotations (∼0.5 ns) on distinct time scales. The activation energies for reorientations about the short axes and methyl group rotations are found to be 27.3 ± 2.7 and 15.8 ± 1.1 kJ/mol, respectively. The fast methyl rotations in the crystal phase of 6CHBT obtained from FFC NMR are further well complemented by high-field NMR, where 1H NMR line shapes are relatively narrow when compared to those of the nematic phase.

Observing short-range orientational order in small-molecule liquids

Local molecular ordering in liquids has attracted a lot of interest from researchers investigating crystallization, but is still poorly understood on the molecular scale. Classical nucleation theory (CNT), a macroscopic thermodynamic description of condensation, has shortcomings when dealing with clusters consisting of tens of molecules. Cluster formation and local order fluctuations in liquid media are difficult to study due to the limited spatial resolution of electron- and photon-imaging methods. We used NMR relaxometry to demonstrate the existence of dynamic clusters with short-range orientational order in nominally isotropic liquids consisting of elongated molecules. We observed clusters in liquids where the local ordering is driven by polar, steric, and hydrogen-bond interactions between the molecules. In the case of a liquid crystal, measuring the local orientational order fluctuations allowed us to observe the size of these clusters diverging when approaching the phase transition from the isotropic to the nematic phase. These fluctuations are described in terms of rotational elasticity as a consequence of the correlated reorientations of the neighbouring molecules. Our quantitative observations of the dynamic clusters in liquids, numbering about ten or fewer molecules, indicate that this is a general phenomenon in various types of liquids.

Wine traceability and authenticity: approaches for geographical origin, variety and vintage assessment

The aim of this work is to identify and discuss physicochemical wine characteristics, to provide to some extent a link to the vintage, variety, and/or geographical origin. Bibliographic datasets were attempted to provide the main information for topic comprehension, identifying the sources of wine compositional variability and how these can be expressed in terms of the belonging categories. Since all the environmental and technological conditions which vineyard and wine are subjected are rarely known, different sources were inspected. Great importance was given to the study of isotopic composition because of its importance in food frauds detection history. The interaction of the plant genotype with the environmental conditions of the vintage is the main responsible for the wines organic and inorganic fraction variability in terms of both total and relative content. This phenotypical expression, together with human and abiotic variability sources, has been examined since it contains to some extent the information for the discrimination of wines according to their category. Recently, new proton nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy techniques have been under study and, used concurrently to chemometric data management procedures, showed to be an interesting and promising tool for wine characterization according to both vintage and variety.

NMR studies of molecular ordering and molecular dynamics in a chiral liquid crystal with the SmC_{α}^{*} phase

Molecular dynamics of the antiferroelectric liquid crystal 4'-(octyloxy)biphenyl-4-carboxylate2-fluoro-4-[(octyl-2-yloxy)carbonyl]phenyl (abbreviated as D16) was investigated using different nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) techniques. D16 molecules form a smectic-C_{α}^{*} phase (SmC_{α}^{*}) in an extremely wide temperature range (∼10 °C). Due to a small tilt of the molecules, this phase is characterized by short switching times, important for new photonic applications. The proton spin-lattice relaxation times were measured in isotropic (Iso), smectic-A (SmA), and SmC_{α}^{*} phases over a wide frequency range of five decades, with conventional and fast field-cycling NMR techniques. This approach allowed a comparison of the essential processes of molecular dynamics taking place in these phases. On the basis of NMR relaxometry measurements, we present a description of the motional behavior of liquid crystal molecules forming SmC_{α}^{*}. Pretransitional effects were observed in wide temperature ranges in both the isotropic and SmA phases in D16. The ^{1}H fast field-cycling NMR measurements were supplemented with NMR diffusometry and ^{19}F NMR spectroscopy.

Early stages of fat crystallisation evaluated by low-field NMR and small-angle X-ray scattering

Low-field time-domain nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR; 20 MHz) is commonly used in the studies of fats in the form of solid fat content (SFC) measurements. However, it has the disadvantage of low sensitivity to small amounts of crystalline material (0.5%), thus often incorrectly determining crystallisation induction times. From spin-lattice relaxation rate measurements (R₁ ) during the isothermal crystallisation measurements of cocoa butter between 0.01 and 10 MHz using fast field cycling NMR, we learnt previously that the most sensitive frequency region is below 1 MHz. Thus, we focused on analysing our 10-kHz data in detail, by observing the time dependence of R₁ and comparing it with standard SFC_NMR and SFC determinations from small-angle X-ray scattering (SFC_SAXS ). Although not reflecting directly the SFC, the R₁ at this low frequency is very sensitive to changes in molecular aggregation and hence potentially serving as an alternative for determination of crystallisation induction times. Alongside R₁ , we also show that SFC_SAXS is more sensitive to early stages of crystallisation, that is, standard SFC_NMR determinations become more relevant when crystal growth starts to dominate the crystallisation process but fail to pick up earlier crystallisation steps. This paper thus demonstrates the potential of studying triacylglycerols at frequencies below 1 MHz for obtaining further understanding of the early crystallisation stages of fats and presents an alternative and complementary method to estimate SFC by SAXS.

Study of Liquid Crystals Showing Two Isotropic Phases by 1H NMR Diffusometry and 1H NMR Relaxometry

In this work, we report a study of two thermotropic liquid crystalline samples showing a not common mesophase behavior. The samples, namely a di-benzyloxy biphenyl derivative labelled 9/2 RS/RS, and a bimesogenic liquid crystal labelled L1, show a direct transition between two isotropic phases followed, at lower temperatures, by the optically isotropic, 3D structured, cubic phase. These systems have been investigated by means of 1H NMR diffusometry and 1H NMR relaxometry in order to characterize their isotropic–isotropic’–cubic mesophase behavior, mainly on the dynamic point of view. In particular, the temperature trend of the self-diffusion coefficients measured for both samples allowed us to significantly distinguish between the two isotropic phases, while the temperature dependence of the 1H spin-lattice relaxation time (T1) did not show significant discontinuities at the isotropic–isotropic’ phase transition. A preliminary analysis of the frequency-dependence of 1H T1 at different temperatures gives information about the main motional processes active in the isotropic mesophases.

1H NMR study of molecular order and dynamics in the liquid crystal CB-C9-CB

Molecular order and dynamics of the CB-C9-CB liquid crystalline dimer exhibiting the nematic (N) and the twist bend nematic (Ntb) phases were investigated by proton NMR spectroscopy, using fields of 0.78 T and 7.04 T, and relaxometry. The first relaxometry experiments for a very wide Larmor frequency domain (8 kHz-300 MHz) on this system, using a combination of standard and fast field cycling NMR techniques, were performed. The spectroscopy results in the Ntb phase allowed us to probe the local molecular orientation relative to the Ntb helix axis. The relaxation data were analyzed considering order director fluctuations (ODF), molecular self-diffusion (SD) and local molecular rotations/reorientations (R) relaxation mechanisms. Global fits of theoretical relaxation models, as a function of temperature and Larmor frequency, for the phases under investigation, allowed for the determination of rotational correlation times, diffusion coefficients, viscoelastic parameters, correlation lengths and activation energies (in the case of thermally activated mechanisms). A clear difference between the structures of the N and Ntb phases was detected from the results of proton spin-lattice relaxation through distinct temperature and frequency dependencies' signatures of the collective modes. Significant pre-transitional effects were observed at the N-Ntb phase transition both from relaxometry and spectroscopy data. The experimental results correlate to data and models for comparable liquid crystalline systems.

Dynamics of Dimethylbutanols in Plastic Crystalline Phases by Field Cycling 1H NMR Relaxometry

2,2-Dimethylbutan-1-ol (2,2-DM-1-B), 3,3-dimethylbutan-1-ol (3,3-DM-1-B), and 3,3-dimethylbutan-2-ol (3,3-DM-2-B) show a rich solid-state polymorphism, which includes one or more plastic crystalline phases (also referred to as orientationally disordered crystalline (ODIC) phases) and glass of the liquid or ODIC phases. In this work, the dynamics of the three isomeric alcohols was investigated in the liquid and plastic crystalline phases by fast field cycling ¹H NMR relaxometry in the temperature range between 213 and 303 K. The analysis of the nuclear magnetic relaxation dispersion curves (i.e., longitudinal relaxation rate R₁ vs ¹H Larmor frequency) acquired for the different alcohols at different temperatures gave quantitative information on internal motions, overall molecular reorientations, and molecular self-diffusion. Self-diffusion coefficients were also determined in the liquid phase and in some ODIC phases of the samples from the trends of ¹H R₁ as a function of the frequency square root at low frequencies. Remarkable changes in the temperature trends of correlation times and self-diffusion coefficients were found at the transition between the liquid and the ODIC phase for 2,2-DM-1-B and 3,3-DM-1-B, and between ODIC phases for 3,3-DM-2-B, the latter sample showing a markedly different dynamic and phase behavior.

Proton and deuterium nuclear spin relaxation study of the SmA and SmC* phases of BP8Cl-d17 : a self-consistent analysis

A self-consistent analysis of proton and deuterium nuclear spin relaxation times in the smectic phases of a partially deuterated smectogen is presented here. Proton spin-lattice relaxation times T(1Z) were measured as a function of Larmor frequency over a range of 1 kHz to 300 MHz at selected temperatures. Deuterium spin relaxation times T(1Z) and T(1Q) were measured as a function of temperature at two different magnetic fields in the smectic A phase. The deuterium data provide dynamic parameters such as rotational diffusion constants and internal jump rates as well as the nematic order parameter S. The proton data are analyzed using a number of relaxation mechanisms, one of which is the molecular reorientation. It is found helpful in these latter analyses to use the nematic order parameter and to fix the contribution from molecular reorientations determined by the deuterium spin relaxation. The fits to the proton T(1) frequency and temperature dispersions by the remaining relaxation mechanisms such as layer undulations and translational self-diffusion will be discussed for the smectic A and chiral smectic C phases.
