Kinetics of Photochromic Conversion at the Solid State: Quantum Yield of Dithienylethene-Based Films

Easy Processable Photomechanical Thin Film Involving a Photochromic Diarylethene and a Thermoplastic Elastomer in Supramolecular Interaction

A novel supramolecular photoactuator in the form of a thin film of centimetric size has been developed as an alternative to traditional liquid crystal elastomers (LCE) involving azobenzene (AZO) units or photochromic microcrystals. This thin film is produced through spin coating without the need for alignment or crosslinking. The photoactuator combines a photochromic dithienylethene (DTE) functionalized with ureidopyrimidinone (UPy) units, and a telechelic thermoplastic elastomer, also functionalized with UPy, allowing quadruple hydrogen bonding between the two components. Upon alternating ultraviolet (UV) and visible light exposure, the film exhibits reversible bending and color changes, studied using displacement and absorption tracking setups. For the first time, the photomechanical effect (PME) is quantitatively correlated with photochromism, showing that DTE units drive the movement under both UV (photocyclization) and visible (photoreversion) light. In situ illumination techniques reveal that the PME arises from photoinduced strain within 160 nm UPy-bonded DTE domains, which expand and contract by approximately 50% under UV and visible light, respectively. The semicrystalline nature of the elastomer and a robust supramolecular network connecting both components are critical in converting microscopic photostrain into macroscopic actuation.

A Molecular-Switch-Embedded Organic Photodiode for Capturing Images against Strong Backlight

When the intensity of the incident light increases, the photocurrents of organic photodiodes (OPDs) exhibit relatively early saturation, due to which OPDs cannot easily detect objects against strong backlights, such as sunlight. In this study, this problem is addressed by introducing a light-intensity-dependent transition of the operation mode, such that the operation mode of the OPD autonomously changes to overcome early photocurrent saturation as the incident light intensity passes the threshold intensity. The photoactive layer is doped with a strategically designed and synthesized molecular switch, 1,2-bis-(2-methyl-5-(4-cyanobiphenyl)-3-thienyl)tetrafluorobenzene (DAB). The proposed OPD exhibits a typical OPD performance with an external quantum efficiency (EQE) of <100% and a photomultiplication behavior with an EQE of >100% under low-intensity and high-intensity light illuminations, respectively, thereby resulting in an extension of the photoresponse linearity to a light intensity of 434 mW cm^-2 . This unique and reversible transition of the operation mode can be explained by the unbalanced quantum yield of photocyclization/photocycloreversion of the molecular switch. The details of the operation mechanism are discussed in conjunction with various photophysical analyses. Furthermore, they establish a prototype image sensor with an array of molecular-switch-embedded OPD pixels to demonstrate their extremely high sensitivity against strong light illumination.

Photochemistry of (Z)-Isovinylneoxanthobilirubic Acid Methyl Ester, a Bilirubin Dipyrrinone Subunit: Femtosecond Transient Absorption and Stimulated Raman Emission Spectroscopy

Bilirubin (BR) is an essential metabolite formed by the catabolism of heme. Phototherapy with blue-green light can be applied to reduce high concentrations of BR in blood and is used especially in the neonatal period. In this work, we studied the photochemistry of (Z)-isovinylneoxanthobilirubic acid methyl ester, a dipyrrinone subunit of BR, by steady-state absorption, femtosecond transient absorption, and stimulated Raman spectroscopies. Both the (Z)- and (E)-configurational isomers of isovinylneoxanthobilirubic acid undergo wavelength-dependent and reversible photoisomerization. The isomerization from the excited singlet state is ultrafast (the lifetimes of (Z)- and (E)-isomers were found to be ∼0.9 and 0.1 ps, respectively), and its efficiencies increase with increased photon energy. In addition, we studied sensitized photooxidation of the dipyrrinone subunit by singlet oxygen that leads to the formation of propentdyopents. Biological activities of these compounds, namely, effects on the superoxide production, lipoperoxidation, and tricarboxylic acid cycle metabolism, were also studied. Finally, different photochemical and biological properties of this BR subunit and its structural analogue, (Z)-vinylneoxanthobilirubic acid methyl ester, studied before, are discussed.

Surface Plasmon-Enhanced Switching Kinetics of Molecular Photochromic Films on Gold Nanohole Arrays

Diarylethene molecules are discussed as possible optical switches, which can reversibly transition between completely conjugated (closed) and nonconjugated (open) forms with different electrical conductance and optical absorbance, by exposure to UV and visible light. However, in general the opening reaction exhibits much lower quantum yield than the closing process, hindering their usage in optoelectronic devices. To enhance the opening process, which is supported by visible light, we employ the plasmonic field enhancement of gold films perforated with nanoholes. We show that gold nanohole arrays reveal strong optical transmission in the visible range (∼60%) and pronounced enhancement of field intensities, resulting in around 50% faster switching kinetics of the molecular species in comparison with quartz substrates. The experimental UV-vis measurements are verified with finite-difference time-domain simulation that confirm the obtained results. Thus, we propose gold nanohole arrays as transparent and conductive plasmonic material that accelerates visible-light-triggered chemical reactions including molecular switching.

Holography with Photochromic Diarylethenes

Photochromic materials are attractive for the development of holograms for different reasons: they show a modulation of the complex refractive index, meaning they are suitable for both amplitude and phase holograms; they are self-developing materials, which do not require any chemical process after the light exposure to obtain the final hologram; the holograms are rewritable, making the system a convenient reconfigurable platform for these types of diffractive elements. In this paper, we will show the features of photochromic materials, in particular diarylethenes in terms of the modulation of a transparency and refractive index, which are mandatory for their use in holography. Moreover, we report on the strategies used to write binary and grayscale holograms and their achieved results. The outcomes are general, and they can be further applied to other classes of photochromic materials in order to optimize the system for achieving high efficiency and high fidelity holograms.

Implementation of a mathematical model for the photochemical kinetics of a solid form active pharmaceutical ingredient

We present here the development of a photochemical model used to quantify the risk to photodegradation of a solid drug substance. A key feature of the proposed model development is streamlined estimation of the dependence of the absorption spectra and the quantum yield to the wavelength. A mathematical description of the relationship between the quantum yield and the wavelength enables estimation of photodegradation kinetics under any light anticipated to be encountered in the manufacturing environment. The system studied here consisted of a first order irreversible transformation (A → B(1Φ)) and the formalism strongly suggested the quantum yield was constant over the relevant wavelength range. The predictive power of the model enabled the design of a control strategy to limit the formation of the photo-degradant to very low levels. Also presented are insights obtained from quantum mechanical modeling of the electronic transitions associated with the UV absorption spectra.

Rewritable Optical Patterns in Light-Responsive Ultrahigh Molecular Weight Polyethylene

Spiropyran is used as a photochromic dye to create colored patterns in highly drawn ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW PE) films. The dye is incorporated in highly crystalline, drawn UHMW PE tapes and fibers and isomerizes to its merocyanine state upon UV light irradiation, resulting in a color change from transparent to purple. The isomerization from merocyanine to spiropyran to erase the color can be simply induced by using heat or a green LED light. The combination of the use of a mask and the reversibility of the isomerization results in colored patterns that can be written, erased, and rewritten using UV light and heat or green LED light.

Azobenzene-based solar thermal fuels: design, properties, and applications

Development of renewable energy technologies has been a significant area of research amongst scientists with the aim of attaining a sustainable world society. Solar thermal fuels that can capture, convert, store, and release solar energy in the form of heat through reversible photoisomerization of molecular photoswitches such as azobenzene derivatives are currently in the limelight of research. Herein, we provide a state-of-the-art account on the recent advancements in solar thermal fuels based on azobenzene photoswitches. We begin with an overview on the importance of azobenzene-based solar thermal fuels and their fundamentals. Then, we highlight the recent advances in diverse azobenzene materials for solar thermal fuels such as pure azobenzene derivatives, nanocarbon-templated azobenzene, and polymer-templated azobenzene. The basic design concepts of these advanced solar energy storage materials are discussed, and their promising applications are highlighted. We then introduce the recent endeavors in the molecular design of azobenzene derivatives toward efficient solar thermal fuels, and conclude with new perspectives on the future scope, opportunities and challenges. It is expected that continuous pioneering research involving scientists and engineers from diverse technological backgrounds could trigger the rapid advancement of this important interdisciplinary field, which embraces chemistry, physics, engineering, nanoscience, nanotechnology, materials science, polymer science, etc.

Photochromic Polyurethanes Showing a Strong Change of Transparency and Refractive Index

Photochromic polymers have been studied as rewritable systems for optical elements with tunable transparency in the visible and refractive index in the NIR. Six diarylethene monomers have been synthesized to give thin films of photochromic polyurethanes. The absorption properties of the monomers in solution and of the corresponding polymeric films have been evaluated showing that a transparency contrast in the visible spectrum of the order of 103 can be obtained by a suitable choice of the chemical structure and illumination wavelength. The change in the refractive index in the NIR have been determined by ellipsometry showing changes larger than 10−2. A trend of this variation with the absorption properties has been also highlighted. Fresnel lenses working on the basis of both a change of the transparency and the refractive index (amplitude and phase) have been demonstrated.

Programmable CGH on photochromic plates coded with DMD generated masks

Computer Generated Holograms (CGHs) are used for wavefront shaping and complex optics testing. Present technology allows for recording binary CGHs. We propose a Digital Micro-mirror Device (DMD) as a reconfigurable mask, to record rewritable binary and grayscale CGHs on a photochromic plate. Opaque at rest, this plate becomes transparent when it is illuminated with visible light of suitable wavelength. We have successfully recorded the very first amplitude grayscale CGH, with a contrast greater than 50, which was reconstructed with a high fidelity in shape, intensity, size and location. These results reveal the high potential of this method for generating programmable/rewritable grayscale CGHs, which combine DMDs and photochromic substrates.

Determining the Photoisomerization Quantum Yield of Photoswitchable Molecules in Solution and in the Solid State

Photoswitchable molecules are able to isomerize between two metastable forms through light stimuli. Originally being studied by photochemists, this type of molecule has now found a wide range of applications within physics, chemistry and biology. The extensive usage of photochromic molecules is due to the two isomers having fundamentally different physical and chemical properties. The most important attribute of a photoswitch is the photoisomerization quantum yield, which defines the efficiency of the photoisomerization event. Here we show how to determine the photoisomerization quantum yield in the solid state and in solution when taking thermal processes into account. The described method together with provided software allows for rapid and accurate determination of the isomerization process for this important class of molecules.

Optical gating with organic building blocks. A quantitative model for the fluorescence modulation of photochromic perylene bisimide dithienylcyclopentene triads

We investigated the capability of molecular triads, consisting of two strong fluorophores that were covalently linked to a photochromic molecule, for optical gating. Therefore we monitored the fluorescence intensity of the fluorophores as a function of the isomeric state of the photoswitch. From the analysis of our data we develop a kinetic model that allows us to predict quantitatively the degree of the fluorescence modulation as a function of the mutual intensities of the lasers that are used to induce the fluorescence and the switching of the photochromic unit. We find that the achievable contrast for the modulation of the fluorescence depends mainly on the intensity ratio of the two light beams and appears to be very robust against absolute changes of these intensities. The latter result provides valuable information for the development of all-optical circuits which would require to handle different signal strengths for the input and output levels.

Photoirradiation wavelength dependence of cycloreversion quantum yields of diarylethenes

The cycloreversion quantum yields of compounds 1b and 2b increased upon irradiation with light at shorter wavelengths. The irradiation wavelength dependence is ascribed to the energy barrier on the 2A potential energy surface in the excited electronic state.

Modeling absorbance-modulation optical lithography in photochromic films

A kinetic model describing the conversion of a photochromic layer under complex illumination conditions is applied to absorbance-modulation optical lithography to determine the influence of the material characteristics on the confinement to subdiffraction dimensions of the transmitted dose. We show that the most important parameters are the intensity ratio between the confining and writing beams, the overall absorption at the writing wavelength, the relative absorption coefficients, and the photoreaction quantum yields at the two wavelengths. As the confining beam ultimately determines the transferred dose pattern, we conclude that the modulation of the writing beam is not strictly necessary to produce subwavelength apertures.

Potential energy surfaces and quantum yields for photochromic diarylethene reactions

Photochromic diarylethenes (DAEs) are among the most promising molecular switching systems for future molecular electronics. Numerous derivatives have been synthesized recently, and experimental quantum yields (QYs) have been reported for two categories of them. Although the QY is one of the most important properties in various applications, it is also the most difficult property to predict before a molecule is actually synthesized. We have previously reported preliminary theoretical studies on what determines the QYs in both categories of DAE derivatives. Here, reflecting theoretical analyses of potential energy surfaces and recent experimental results, a rational explanation of the general guiding principle for QY design is presented for future molecular design.
