Pore Shape of Honeycomb-Patterned Films: Modulation and Interfacial Behavior

Exploiting breath figure reversibility for in situ pattern modulation and hierarchical design

The breath figure (BF) method employs condensation droplets as dynamic templates for patterning polymer films. In the classical approach, dropwise condensation and film solidification are simultaneously induced through solvent evaporation, leading to empirically derived patterns with limited predictability of the final design. Here we use the temporally arrested BF methodology, controlling condensation and polymerisation independently to create diverse BF patterns with varied pore size, arrangement and distribution. External temperature control enables us to further investigate and exploit the inherent reversibility of the phase change process that governs the pattern formation. We modulate the level of subcooling and superheating to achieve subsequent regimes of condensation and evaporation, permitting in situ regulation of the droplet growth and shrinkage kinetics. The full reversibility of the phase change processes joined with active photopolymerisation in the current approach thus allows arresting of predictable BF kinetics at intermediate stages, thereby accessing patterns with varied pore size and spacing for unchanged material properties and environmental conditions. This simultaneous active control over both the kinetics of phase change and polymer solidification offers affordable routes for the fabrication of diverse predictable porous surfaces; manufacture of monolithic hierarchical BF patterns are ultimately facilitated through the advanced control of the BF assembly using the method presented here.

Gas-Permeable, Ultrathin, Stretchable Epidermal Electronics with Porous Electrodes

We present gas-permeable, ultrathin, and stretchable electrodes enabled by self-assembled porous substrates and conductive nanostructures. An efficient and scalable breath figure method is employed to introduce the porous skeleton, and then silver nanowires (AgNWs) are dip-coated and heat-pressed to offer electric conductivity. The resulting film has a transmittance of 61%, sheet resistance of 7.3 Ω/sq, and water vapor permeability of 23 mg cm^-2 h^-1. With AgNWs embedded below the surface of the polymer, the electrode exhibits excellent stability in the presence of sweat and after long-term wear. We demonstrate the promising potential of the electrode for wearable electronics in two representative applications: skin-mountable biopotential sensing for healthcare and textile-integrated touch sensing for human-machine interfaces. The electrode can form conformal contact with human skin, leading to low skin-electrode impedance and high-quality biopotential signals. In addition, the textile electrode can be used in a self-capacitance wireless touch sensing system.

Honeycomb-patterned porous films fabricated via self-organization of Tb complex-loaded amphiphilic copolymers

Amphiphilic copolymers, poly(styrene)-block-Tb complex (PS-b-Tb complex), were synthesized by reversible addition fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) polymerization. The honeycomb structured porous films were fabricated via dropping the PS-b-Tb complex copolymer solutions on glass substrates by the breath figures method (BFM). The structure and composition of the amphiphilic copolymer PS-b-Tb complex were confirmed by gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and ¹H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (¹H NMR). The surface morphology and elemental mapping of the highly ordered porous films were investigated by field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and laser scanning confocal microscopy (LSCM). The results indicated that the solvent type and copolymer concentration can affect the surface morphology of the porous films. The average diameter of the pores in the porous films decreased with the polymer concentration and the molecular weight of the copolymers increased. The FESEM-EDX analysis further verified that the hydrophilic groups (Tb complex groups) were mainly distributed at the pore wall, instead of at the outer surface layer of the films, which was consistent with the LSCM results.

Highly Ordered Honeycomb Film Formation of Linear Polymers by the Breath Figure Technique

Highly ordered, porous honeycomb (HC) films were prepared by the breath figure technique from linear polymers poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and polystyrene (PS). Typically HC films are difficult to form from such simple linear polymers. The addition of a novel fluorinated polymer (FP) additive with as little as 1 wt-% to PMMA or 5 wt-% to PS was required to obtain regular porous HC films. Through investigation of the influence of the additive on the polymer properties, three parameters based on interfacial tension, polymer solution viscosity, and polymer solidification rate were identified as key factors affecting the ability of polymer systems to form regular porous HC films. A new hypothesis was subsequently developed based on the relationships of these parameters to explain the unusual behaviour associated with HC film formation from linear PMMA and PS with addition of FP additive. This work will provide a new tool to guide the formation of HC films and will greatly broaden the range of polymers used to form HC films in the future.

A New Strategy of Lithography Based on Phase Separation of Polymer Blends

Herein, we propose a new strategy of maskless lithographic approach to fabricate micro/nano-porous structures by phase separation of polystyrene (PS)/Polyethylene glycol (PEG) immiscible polymer blend. Its simple process only involves a spin coating of polymer blend followed by a development with deionized water rinse to remove PEG moiety, which provides an extremely facile, low-cost, easily accessible nanofabrication method to obtain the porous structures with wafer-scale. By controlling the weight ratio of PS/PEG polymer blend, its concentration and the spin-coating speed, the structural parameters of the porous nanostructure could be effectively tuned. These micro/nano porous structures could be converted into versatile functional nanostructures in combination with follow-up conventional chemical and physical nanofabrication techniques. As demonstrations of perceived potential applications using our developed phase separation lithography, we fabricate wafer-scale pure dielectric (silicon)-based two-dimensional nanostructures with high broadband absorption on silicon wafers due to their great light trapping ability, which could be expected for promising applications in the fields of photovoltaic devices and thermal emitters with very good performances, and Ag nanodot arrays which possess a surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) enhancement factor up to 1.64 × 10⁸ with high uniformity across over an entire wafer.

Porphyrinated polyimide honeycomb films with high thermal stability for HCl gas sensing

Thermally stable films with ordered pores are fabricated from porphyrinated polyimides and they exhibit excellent property in HCl gas sensing.

Fabrication of perforated isoporous membranes via a transfer-free strategy: enabling high-resolution separation of cells

Thin perforated membranes with ordered pores are ideal barriers for high-resolution and high-efficiency selective transport and separation of biological species. However, for self-assembled thin membranes with a thickness less than several micrometers, an additional step of transferring the membranes onto porous supports is generally required. In this article, we present a facile transfer-free strategy for fabrication of robust perforated composite membranes via the breath figure process, and for the first time, demonstrate the application of the membranes in high-resolution cell separation of yeasts and lactobacilli without external pressure, achieving almost 100% rejection of yeasts and more than 70% recovery of lactobacilli with excellent viability. The avoidance of the transfer step simplifies the fabrication procedure of composite membranes and greatly improves the membrane homogeneity. Moreover, the introduction of an elastic triblock copolymer increases the interfacial strength between the membrane and the support, and allows the preservation of composite membranes in a dry state. Such perforated ordered membranes can also be applied in other size-based separation systems, enabling new opportunities in bioseparation and biosensors.

Progress in the breath figure method is reviewed by emphasizing the role of the multiple interfaces and the applications of honeycomb films in separation, biocatalysis, biosensing, templating, stimuli-responsive surfaces and adhesive surfaces.

Polystyrene with hydrophobic end groups: synthesis, kinetics, interfacial activity, and self-assemblies templated by breath figures

Polystyrenes with hydrophobic end groups are synthesized from a series of alkyl or fluorinated ATRP initiators to fine-tune the surface morphologies of honeycomb films prepared by the breath figure method.

Surface-engineered nanogel assemblies with integrated blood compatibility, cell proliferation and antibacterial property: towards multifunctional biomedical membranes

This study presents the fabrication of multifunctional nanolayers on biomedical membrane surfaces by using LBL self-assembly of nanogels and heparin-like polymers.

Superhydrophobic hierarchical honeycomb surfaces

Two-dimensional hexagonally ordered honeycomb surfaces have been created by solvent casting polybutadiene films under controlled humidity. Subsequent CF(4) plasmachemical fluorination introduces cross-linking and surface texturing, leading to hierarchical surfaces with roughness on both the 10 μm (honeycomb) and micrometer (texturing) length scales. For microliter droplets, these display high water contact angle values (>170°) in combination with low contact angle hysteresis (i.e., superhydrophobicity) while displaying bouncing of picoliter water droplets. In the case of picoliter droplets, it is found that surfaces which exhibit similar static contact angles can give rise to different droplet impact dynamics, governed by the underlying surface topography. These studies are of relevance to technological processes such as rapid cooling, delayed freezing, crop spraying, and inkjet printing.
