Biradical Paradox Revisited Quantitatively: A Theoretical Model for Self-Associated Biradical Molecules as Antiferromagnetically Exchange Coupled Spin Chains in Solution

Extended shortwave infrared absorbing antiaromatic fluorenium-indolizine chromophores

Shortwave infrared (SWIR, 1000-1700 nm) and extended SWIR (ESWIR, 1700-2700 nm) absorbing materials are valuable for applications including fluorescence based biological imaging, photodetectors, and light emitting diodes. Currently, ESWIR absorbing materials are largely dominated by inorganic semiconductors which are often costly both in raw materials and manufacturing processes used to produce them. The development of ESWIR absorbing organic molecules is thus of interest due to the tunability, solution processability, and low cost of organic materials compared to their inorganic counterparts. Herein, through the combination of heterocyclic indolizine donors and an antiaromatic fluorene core, a series of organic chromophores with absorption maxima ranging from 1470-2088 nm (0.84-0.59 eV) and absorption onsets ranging from 1693-2596 nm (0.73-0.48 eV) are designed and synthesized. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of these chromophores, referred to as FluIndz herein, are described via absorption spectroscopy in 17 solvents, cyclic voltammetry, solution photostability, and transient absorption spectroscopy. Molecular orbital energies, predicted electronic transitions, and antiaromaticity are compared to higher energy absorbing chromophores using density functional theory. The presence of thermally accessible diradical states is demonstrated using density functional theory and EPR spectroscopy, while XRD crystallography confirms structural connectivity and existence as a single molecule. Overall, the FluIndz chromophore scaffold exhibits a rational means to access organic chromophores with extremely narrow optical gaps.

N-Heterocyclic Carbene Analogues of Wittig Hydrocarbon

N-Heterocyclic carbene (NHC) analogues of Wittig hydrocarbon, [(NHC)(Stil)(NHC)] (3a-c) (NHC = SIPr (1a) = C[N(Dipp)CH2]2, Dipp = 2,6-iPr2C6H3; IPr (1b) = C[N(Dipp)CH]2; Me-IPr (1c) = C[N(Dipp)CMe]2 and Stil = C6H4CHCHC6H4) have been reported as crystalline solids. 3a-c are prepared by two-electron reductions of the corresponding bis-1,3-imidazoli(ni)um bromides [(NHC)(Stil)NHC)](Br)2 (2a-c) with KC8 in >94 % yields. 2a-c are accessible by the nickel catalyzed direct C-C coupling of NHCs (1a-c) with (E)-4,4'-dibromostilbene. One-electron oxidation of 3a,b yields the corresponding radical cations [(NHC)(Stil)NHC)]B(C6F5)4 4a,b. All compounds have been characterized by UV-Vis/NMR/EPR spectroscopy as well as 2a, 3a, and 3b by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The electronic structures of representative systems have been analyzed by quantum chemical calculations.

Robust Supercooled Liquid Formation Enables All-Optical Switching Between Liquid and Solid Phases of TEMPO

Organic molecules that undergo supercooling can provide the basis for novel stimuli-responsive materials, but the number of such compounds is limited. Results in this paper show that the stable organic radical 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-1-piperidine-1-oxyl (TEMPO) can form a stable supercooled liquid (SCL). Upon melting and cooling back to room temperature, the TEMPO SCL can persist for months, even after mild physical agitation. Its high vapor pressure can enable crystal growth at remote locations within the sample container over the course of days. Optical, electron paramagnetic resonance, and birefringence measurements show no evidence of new chemical species or partially ordered phases in the supercooled liquid. TEMPO's free radical character permits absorption of visible light that can drive photothermal melting to form the SCL, while a single nanosecond light pulse can initiate recrystallization of the SCL at some later time. This capability enables all-optical switching between the solid and the SCL phases. The physical origin of TEMPO's remarkable stability as an SCL remains an open question, but these results suggest that organic radicals comprise a new class of molecules that can form SCLs with potentially useful properties.

Variation from closed-shell to open shell electronic structures in oligothiophene bis(dioxolene) complexes

A series of oligothiophene bis(dioxolene) complexes, SQ-Thn-SQ (SQ = S = ½TpCum,MeZnII(3-tert-butyl-orthosemiquinonate); TpCum,Me = tris(5-cumenyl-3-methylpyrazolyl)borate anion) have been synthesized, structurally characterized, and studied as a function of the number of thiophene bridging units, n (n = 0-3) using a combination of variable-temperature (VT) electronic absorption and EPR spectroscopies, and VT magnetic susceptibility measurements. The thiophene bridge bond lengths determined by X-ray crystallography display dramatic differences across the SQ-Thn-SQ series. Bridge bond deviation values (Σ|Δi|) display a progressive change in the nature of the bridge fragment bonding as the number of thiophene groups increases, with quinoidal bridge character for n = 1 (SQ-Th-SQ) and biradical character with "aromatic" bridge bond lengths for n = 3 (SQ-Th3-SQ). Remarkably, for n = 2 (SQ-Th2-SQ) the nature of the bridge fragment is intermediate between quinoid and biradical aromatic, which we describe as having open-shell character as opposed to biradicaloid since the open-shell biradical configuration does not have the correct symmetry to mix with the quinoidal ground-state configuration. This bridge bonding character is reflected in the energies of the lowest lying open-shell states for these three molecules. The SQ-Th-SQ molecule is diamagnetic at all temperatures studied, and we provide evidence for SQ-SQ antiferromagnetic exchange coupling and population of triplet states in SQ-Th2-SQ and SQ-Th3-SQ, with JSQ-SQ(ave) = -279 cm-1 (VT EPR/electronic absorption/magnetic susceptibility) and JSQ-SQ = -117 cm-1 (VT EPR/electronic absorption/magnetic susceptibility), respectively. The results have been interpreted in the context of state configurational mixing within a simplified 4-electron, 3-orbital model that explicitly contains contributions of a bridge fragment. Variable-temperature spectroscopic- and magnetic susceptibility data are consistent with two low-lying open-shell states for SQ-Th3-SQ, but three low-lying states (one closed-shell and two open-shell) for SQ-Th2-SQ. This model provides a simple symmetry-based framework to understand the continuum of electronic and geometric structures of this class of molecules as a function of the number of thiophene units in the bridge.

Stable Diradical on the Dimethyldihydropyrene Scaffold

The diradical character in a molecular architecture can be customized primarily in two ways: first, by employing a quinoidal pro-aromatic system with net energy gained by aromatization that compensates for the energy required to generate the diradical species and, second, by employing an antiaromatic system having easily accessible triplet states that impart a diradical character. We have chosen a 14π aromatic framework, Boekelheide's dimethyldihydropyrene, and perturbed its aromaticity through the construction of its quinoidal form. The perturbed aromaticity was evident from the bond alteration in the X-ray diffraction structure, 1H nuclear magnetic resonance chemical shifts, and quantum chemical calculations. The aromaticity was restored as the system underwent a transition to the biradical structure centered on two exocyclic carbons. In addition, upon photoexcitation and without using an external reducing reagent, the diradical could be converted to a radical anion and dianion form easily when dimethylformamide was used as a solvent.

Modular Approach to Creating Functionalized Surface Arrays of Molecular Qubits

The quest for developing quantum technologies is driven by the promise of exponentially faster computations, ultrahigh performance sensing, and achieving thorough understanding of many-particle quantum systems. Molecular spins are excellent qubit candidates because they feature long coherence times, are widely tunable through chemical synthesis, and can be interfaced with other quantum platforms such as superconducting qubits. A present challenge for molecular spin qubits is their integration in quantum devices, which requires arranging them in thin films or monolayers on surfaces. However, clear proof of the survival of quantum properties of molecular qubits on surfaces has not been reported so far. Furthermore, little is known about the change in spin dynamics of molecular qubits going from the bulk to monolayers. Here, a versatile bottom-up method is reported to arrange molecular qubits as functional groups of self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on surfaces, combining molecular self-organization and click chemistry. Coherence times of up to 13 µs demonstrate that qubit properties are maintained or even enhanced in the monolayer.

Aromatic Stacking Mediated Spin-Spin Coupling in Cyclophane-Assembled Diradicals

To investigate the capability of π-π stacking motifs to enable spin-spin coupling, we designed and synthesized three pairs of regio-isomers featuring two radical moieties joined by a [2.2]paracyclophane (CP) unit. By fusing indeno units to CP, two partially stacked fluorene radicals are covalently linked, exhibiting evident antiferromagnetic (AFM) coupling regardless of the orientation of two spins. Remarkably, while possessing high diradical indices of 0.8 and 0.9, the two molecules demonstrate good air stability by virtue of their singlet ground state. Single crystals help unravel the structural basis of their AFM coupling behaviors. When two radical centers are arranged at the pseudometa-positions around CP, the face-to-face stacked phenylene rings intrinsically confer orbital interactions that promote AFM coupling. On the other hand, if two radicals are directed in the pseudopara-orientation, significant orbital overlapping is observed between the radical centers (i.e., C9 of fluorene) and the aromatic carbons laid on the side, rendering AFM coupling between the two spins. In contrast, when two fluorene radicals are tethered to CP via C9 through a single C-C bond, ferromagnetic (FM) coupling is manifested by both diradical isomers featuring pseudometa- and pseudopara-connectivity. With minimal spin distributed on CP and thus limited contribution from π-π stacking, their spin-spin coupling properties are more similar to a pair of nitroxide diradical analogues, in which the two spins are dominantly coupled via through-space interactions. From these results, important conclusions are elucidated such as that although through-space interactions may confer FM coupling, with weakened strength shown by PAH radicals due to their lower polarity, face-to-face stacked π-frameworks tend to induce AFM coupling, because favorable orbital interactions are readily achieved by PAH systems hosting delocalized spins that are capable of adopting varied stacking motifs.

Toward an Air-Stable Triradical with Strong Spin Coupling: Synthesis of Substituted Truxene-5,10,15-triyl

With the aim to achieve air-stable polyradical species manifesting strong spin coupling, synthetic endeavors are made toward triradical molecules featuring a truxene-triyl skeleton. Commonly used steric-hindering side groups such as 2,4,6-trichlorophenyl and 9-anthracenyl are both found to be incompetent at stabilizing the targeted truxene triradical, which appears to be elusive from isolation and characterization. Nonetheless, single-crystal structures of adducts formed by relevant radicals are obtained, which strongly suggests the transient existence of the designed triradicals. Finally, a truxene triradical comprising 1-anthracenyl along with two 9-anthracenyl substituents is successfully isolated and found to exhibit decent stability in air. We propose that because of the smaller dihedral angle assumed by 1-anthracenyl with respect to the plane of truxene-triyl, more effective π-conjugation allows the spin density to be more widely delocalized and distributed to the anthracenyl side groups. Thus, higher stability is gained by the triradical molecule.

CAAC-Based Thiele and Schlenk Hydrocarbons

Diradicals have been of tremendous interest for over a century ever since the first reports of p- and m-phenylene-bridged diphenylmethylradicals in 1904 by Thiele and 1915 by Schlenk. Reported here are the first examples of cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene (CAAC) analogues of Thiele's hydrocarbon, a Kekulé diradical, and Schlenk's hydrocarbon, a non-Kekulé diradical, without using CAAC as a precursor. The CAAC analogue of Thiele's hydrocarbon has a singlet ground state, whereas the CAAC analogue of Schlenk's hydrocarbon contains two unpaired electrons. The latter forms a dimer, by an intermolecular double head-to-tail dimerization. This straightforward synthetic methodology is modular and can be extended for the generation of redox-active organic compounds.

Saturated N-Heterocyclic Carbene Based Thiele's Hydrocarbon with a Tetrafluorophenylene Linker

The synthesis of a SIPr [1,3-bis(2,6-diisopropylphenyl)-imidazolin-2-ylidene] derived Kekulé diradicaloid with a tetrafluorophenylene spacer (3) has been described. Two synthetic routes have been reported to access 3. The cleavage of C-F bond of C₆ F₆ by SIPr in the presence of BF₃ led to double C-F activated compound with two tetrafluoro borate counter anions (2), which upon reduction by lithium metal afforded 3. Alternatively, 3 can be directly accessed in one step by reacting SIPr with C₆ F₆ in presence of Mg metal. Compounds 2 and 3 were well characterized spectroscopically and by single-crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Experimental and computational studies support the cumulenic closed-shell singlet state of 3 with a singlet-triplet energy gap (ΔE_S-T ) of 23.7 kcal mol^-1 .

Kekulé diradicaloids derived from a classical N-heterocyclic carbene

The direct double carbenylation of 1,4-diiodobenzene and 4,4'-dibromobiphenyl with a classical N-heterocyclic carbene, SIPr (1) (SIPr = :C{N(2,6-iPr2C6H3)}2CH2CH2), by means of nickel catalysis gives rise to 1,3-imidazolinium salts [(SIPr)(C6H4)(SIPr)](I)2 (2) and [(SIPr)(C6H4)2(SIPr)](Br)2 (3) as off-white solids. Two-electron reduction of 2 and 3 with KC8 cleanly yields Kekulé diradicaloid compounds [(SIPr)(C6H4)(SIPr)] (4) and [(SIPr)(C6H4)2(SIPr)] (5), respectively, as crystalline solids. Structural parameters and DFT as well as CASSCF calculations suggest the closed-shell singlet ground state for 4 and 5. Calculations reveal a very low singlet-triplet energy gap ΔES-T for 5 (10.7 kcal mol-1), while ΔES-T for 4 (29.1 kcal mol-1) is rather large.

A designed room-temperature triplet ligand from pyridine-2,6-diyl bis(tert-butyl nitroxide)

The magnetic study on newly developed 4-mesitylpyridine-2,6-diyl bis(tert-butyl nitroxide) shows that almost the whole population has a ground triplet state at room temperature, and the ability of complex formation as a tridentate triplet ligand was proven with a diamagnetic yttrium(iii) ion.

"Tschitschibabin type biradicals": benzenoid or quinoid?

Our findings provide a better understanding of the discrepancies related to the discussion in the literature on the ground state of Tschitschibabin's hydrocarbon. A series of phenylene bridged bisnitroxide molecules were designed and studied for the comparison. The simple theoretical and experimental methodologies have been developed and utilized to understand the singlet biradicaloids which exist in semi-quinoid form and exhibits characteristics of biradicaloid and quinoid form simultaneously.

Synthesis and structural characterization of a dendrimer model compound based on a cyclotriphosphazene core with TEMPO radicals as substituents

The synthesis of the 3Gc0T zero generation dendrimer with a cyclotriphosphazene core functionalized with nitroxyl radicals in its six branches has been performed. The radical units have been used as probes to determine the orientation of the six branches in solution experimentally by Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) spectroscopy compared with the structure obtained in the solid state by X-ray diffraction. The orientation of the dendrimer branches is the same in solution as in the solid state.

A supramolecular switch between ground high- and low-spin states using 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine-6,6''-diyl bis(tert-butyl nitroxide)

Biradical 2,2':6',2''-terpyridine-6,6''-diyl bis(tert-butyl nitroxide) (tpybNO) showed intramolecular ferromagnetic coupling with 2J/kB = +2.14(10) K and its complex [Zn(tpybNO)(MeOH)2](BF4)2 exhibited intramolecular antiferromagnetic coupling with 2J/kB = -7.5(4) K, suggesting exchange coupling switchable by means of supramolecular chemistry.
