Abstract
Controlling the reduction midpoint potential of heme B is a key factor in many bioelectrochemical reactions, including long-range electron transport. Currently, there are a number of globular model protein systems to study this biophysical parameter; however, there are none for large polymeric protein model systems (e.g., the OmcS protein from G. sulfurreducens). Peptide amphiphiles, short peptides with a lipid tail that polymerize into fibrous structures, fill this gap. Here, we show a peptide amphiphile model system where one can tune the electrochemical potential of heme B by changing the loading ratio and peptide sequence. Changing the loading ratio resulted in the most significant increase, with values as high as -22 mV down to -224 mV. Circular dichroism spectra of certain sequences show Cotton effects at lower loading ratios that disappear as more heme B is added, indicating an ordered environment that becomes disrupted if heme B is overpacked. These findings can contribute to the design of functional self-assembling biomaterials.

Abstract
Over recent decades, multidrug-resistant pathogens have become a global concern, with WHO even considering it one of the biggest threats to global health, food security, and development today, which led to the search for alternative antibacterial agents. A special class is formed by peptides composed by the diphenylalanine motif whose antibacterial properties result from their supramolecular arrangement into nanotubes. However, several other dipeptides that also form nanotubes have been largely overlooked. Here, we present the antibacterial activity of four dipeptide nanotubes. The results point to diverse mechanisms through which dipeptide nanotubes exert their effect against bacteria. Antibacterial activity was similar for dipeptide nanotubes sufficiently wide to allow water flux while dipeptides displaying smaller channels were inactive. This suggests that two of the tested dipeptides, L-Phe-L-Phe (FF, diphenylalanine) and L-Leu-L-Ser (LS), are pore forming structures able to induce membrane permeation and affect cellular hydration and integrity. Of these two dipeptides, only FF demonstrated potential to inhibit biofilm formation. The amyloid-like nature and hydrophobicity of diphenylalanine assemblies are probably responsible for their adhesion to cell surfaces preventing biofilm formation and bacteria attachment.

Abstract
The molecular interactions of anionic tetrasulfonate phenyl porphyrin (TPPS) with poly(amido amine) (PAMAM) dendrimers of generation 2.0 and 4.0 (G2 and G4, respectively) forming H- or J-aggregates, as well as with human and bovine serum albumin proteins (HSA and BSA), were reviewed in the context of self-assembly molecular complementarity. The spectroscopic studies were extended to the association of aluminum phthtalocyanine (AlPCS4) detected with a PAMAM G4 dendrimer with fluorescence studies in both steady state and dynamic state, as well as due to the fluorescence quenching associated to electron-transfer with a distribution of lifetimes. The functionalization of TPPS with peripheral substituents enables the assignment of spontaneous pH-induced aggregates with different and well-defined morphologies. Other work reported in the literature, in particular with soft self-assembly materials, fall in the same area with particular interest for the environment. The microencapsulation of TPPS studies into polyelectrolyte capsules was developed quite recently and aroused much interest, which is well supported and complemented by the extensive data reported on the Imaging Microscopy section of the Luminescence of Porphyrins and Phthalocyanines included in the present review.

Abstract
The covalent and noncovalent association of self-assembling peptides and tetrapyrroles was explored as a way to generate systems that mimic Nature's functional supramolecular structures. Different types of peptides spontaneously assemble with porphyrins, phthalocyanines, or corroles to give long-range ordered architectures, whose structure is determined by the features of both components. The regular morphology and ordered molecular arrangement of these systems enhance the photochemical properties of embedded chromophores, allowing applications as photo-catalysts, antennas for dye-sensitized solar cells, biosensors, and agents for light-triggered therapies. Chemical modifications of peptide and tetrapyrrole structures and control over the assembly process can steer the organization and influence the properties of the resulting system. Here we provide a review of the field, focusing on the assemblies obtained from different classes of self-assembling peptides with tetrapyrroles, their morphologies and their applications as innovative functional materials.

Abstract
The aggregation properties of two peptide–porphyrin conjugates were investigated by optical spectroscopy and microscopy imaging with nanometer resolution. Specifically, a tetraphenylporphyrin platform was functionalized by (L)-magainin, a 23-residue long antimicrobial peptide, and by a (L)-magainin analogue differing from the parent peptide by a single residue substitution, [Formula: see text] an Ala vs. Phe replacement in the position 5 of the peptide chain. Spectroscopic and microscopy results show that this single-site substitution has a small effect on the secondary structure attained by the two peptide analogues, but deeply affects the morphology of the mesoscopic structures deposited on hydrophilic mica from methanol/water solutions. In particular, only the Ala-substituted peptide-porphyrin conjugate was shown to be able to form micrometric fibrils, coating homogeneously a hydrophilic mica surface. These results pave the way for potential applications of porphyrin-peptide compounds in localized photodynamic therapy and for designing solid-state stereoselective sensors.

Abstract
The effect of pH change on 5,10,15,20-Tetrakis(4-hydroxyphenyl)-21H,23H-porphine (THPP) with its aggregation as function of water-ethanol mixture was studied with UV-vis, fluorescence, Raman and computational analysis. In neutral pH, THPP was present as free-base and, increasing the water amount, aggregation occurred with the formation of H- and J-aggregates. The aggregation constant and the concentration of dimers were calculated, other information about the dimer aggregation were evaluated by computational study. In acidic pH, by the insertions of two hydrogens in the porphyrin rings, the porphyrin changed its geometry with a ring deformation confirmed by red-shifted spectrum and quenching in fluorescence; at this low pH, increasing the water amount, the acidic form (THPPH2)2+ resulted more stable due to a polar environment with stronger interaction by hydrogen bonding. In basic pH, reached by NH4OH, THPP porphyrin was able to react with alkali metals in order to form sitting-atop complex (M2THPP) confirmed by the typical absorption spectrum of metallo-porphyrin, Raman spectroscopy and by computational analysis.

Abstract
The solvent-promoted aggregation of porphyrins covalently linked to medium length peptides occurs with the formation of chiral supramolecular structures if the peptide chain can adopt an α-helical secondary structure. The circular dichroism spectra of different porphyrin-peptide conjugates show that the chiral arrangement of the porphyrins in the aggregates does not depend on the screw-sense of the peptide helix. Experimental evidence and molecular dynamic simulations suggest that the linker between the porphyrin and the peptide helix is responsible for the overall chirality of supramolecular structures. In particular when the linker is a chiral α-amino acid it is possible to tune the morphology of the chiral aggregates by inverting the configuration of the chiral center.

Abstract
A strategy assisted by an inorganic template was developed to promote the organized self-assembly of meso-(tetrakis)-(p-sulfonatophenyl)porphyrin (TPPS) on pH-sensitive core-shell polyelectrolyte microcapsules (PECs) of poly(styrenesulfonate) (PSS) and poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH). A key feature of this strategy is the use of template CaCO3 microparticles as a nucleation site endorsing inside-outside directional growth of porphyrin aggregates. Using this approach, TPPS self-assembly in positively charged PECs with CaCO3 (PAH/PSS)2PAH as a sequence of layers was successfully achieved using mild pH conditions (pH 3). Evidence for porphyrin aggregation was obtained by UV-vis with the characteristic absorption bands in PECs functionalized with porphyrins. Fluorescence lifetime imaging microscopy (FLIM) of the polyelectrolyte core-shell confirmed the presence of radially distributed needlelike structures sticking out from polyelectrolyte shells. Microscopic images also revealed a sequential process (adsorption, redistribution, and aggregation) for the directional growth (inside/outside) of TPPS aggregates, which highlights the importance of the core in the aggregation induction. Removing the CaCO3 core alters the porphyrin interaction in the PEC environment, and aggregate growth is no longer favored.

Abstract
The shapes and properties of self-assembled materials can be adjusted easily using environmental stimuli. Yet, the stimulus-triggered shape evolution of organic microspheres in aqueous solution has rarely been reported so far. Here, a novel type of poly(allylamine hydrochloride)-g-porphyrin microspheres (PAH-g-Por MPs) was prepared by a Schiff base reaction between 2-formyl-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrin (Por-CHO) and PAH doped in 3.5-μm CaCO3 microparticles, followed by template removal. The PAH-g-Por MPs had an average diameter of 2.5 μm and could be transformed into one-dimensional nanorods (NRs) and wormlike nanostructures (WSs) after being incubated for different times in pH 1-4 HCl solutions. The rate and degree of hydrolysis had a significant effect on the formation and morphologies of the nanorods. The NRs@pH1, NRs@pH2, and NRs@pH3 were all composed of the released Por-CHO and the unhydrolyzed PAH-g-Por because of the incomplete hydrolysis of the Schiff base. However, the WSs@pH4 were formed by a pure physical shape transformation, because they had the same composition as the PAH-g-Por MPs and the Schiff base bonds were not hydrolyzed. The self-assembled NRs and WSs exhibited good colloidal stability and could emit stable red fluorescence over a relatively long period of time.

A sensitive A3B porphyrin nanomaterial for CO2 detection. Molecules 2014; 19:21239-52. Abstract
The present report deals with the tailoring, preparation and characterization of novel nanomaterials sensitive to CO2 for use in detection of this gas during space habitation missions. A new nanostructured material based on mixed substituted asymmetrical A3B porphyrin: 5-(4-pyridyl)-10,15,20-tris(3,4-dimethoxyphenyl)-porphyrin (PyTDMeOPP) was synthesized and characterized by 1H-NMR, FT-IR, UV-vis, fluorescence, MS, HPLC and AFM. Introducing one pyridyl substituent in the 5-meso-position of porphyrin macrocycle confers some degree of hydrophilicity, which may cause self-assembly properties and a better response to increased acidity. The influence of pH and nature of the solvent upon H and J aggregates of the porphyrin are discussed. Porphyrin aggregation at the air-THF interface gave a triangular type morphology, randomly distributed but uniformly oriented. When deposition was made by multiple drop-casting operations, a network of triangles of uniform size was created and a porous structure was obtained, being reorganized finally in rings. When the deposition was made from CHCl3, ring structures ranging in internal diameter from 300 nm to 1 µm, but with the same width of the corona circular of approx. 200 nm were obtained. This porphyrin-based material, capable of generating ring aggregates in both THF and CHCl3, has been proven to be sensitive to CO2 detection. The dependence between the intensity of porphyrin UV-vis absorption and the concentration of CO2 has a good correlation of 98.4%.
