Stability of Gas-Phase Tartaric Acid Anions Investigated by Quantum Chemistry, Mass Spectrometry, and Infrared Spectroscopy

Microwave-assisted recovery of lead from electrolytic manganese anode sludge using tartaric acid and NaOH

In this study, a new metallurgical system for treating electrolytic manganese anode sludge by microwave roasting and alkaline leaching system was developed, and the lead leaching behaviour was studied. The XRD results show that Pb in anode sludge is mainly in the form of PbSO₄ after microwave roasting at 850°C, as a result, the leaching rate of Pb is improved. The results show that the leaching rate of lead can reach 93.89% under the conditions of liquid-solid ratio of 7:1, leaching time of 30 min, leaching temperature of 40°C, and the concentration of sodium hydroxide of 8%. The addition of tartaric acid can further improve the lead leaching rate, FT-IR analysis showed that the coordination form of lead and tartaric acid. Lead and tartaric acid ions (L) form three coordination compounds, PbL, Pb₂L₂ and Pb₂L₃, which can only exist in alkaline solution.

High production of small organic dicarboxylate dianions by DESI and ESI

A significant production of gas-phase dicarboxylate dianions has been observed in standard ESI and DESI during the analysis of small organic dicarboxylic acids under moderate or highly alkaline conditions. In ESI, this can be attributed to an excess of hydroxyl ions (OH(-)) which favor the formation of an high amount of dianions in solution, contemporarily trapping the potential counter ions during the ESI process. The results obtained in DESI highlight the role of the surface in trapping the counter-ions during desorption process and determining the ultimate nature of the observed gas-phase ions.

Growth, molecular structure, NBO analysis and vibrational spectral analysis of l-tartaric acid single crystal

Single crystal of l-tartaric acid (LTA) has been grown by slow evaporation technique. The experimental and theoretical studies on molecular structure, vibrational spectra, electronic absorption spectra and non-linear optical property of the crystal are studied. The FT-IR, FT-Raman and UV-Vis-NIR experimental spectra of LTA crystal have been recorded in the range 400-4000cm(-1), 100-3700cm(-1) and 190-1100nm, respectively. Density functional theory calculations with B3LYP/6-311++G(d,p) basis sets was used to determine ground state molecular geometries, vibrational frequencies, ICT interactions, Mulliken population analysis on atomic charge, HOMO-LUMO analysis, non-linear optical response properties and thermodynamic properties for LTA and the results were discussed. Vibrational analysis confirms the formation of intramolecular OH⋯O hydrogen bonding. The stability of the molecule has been analyzed using NBO analysis. The results of electronic absorptions in gas phase and water phase LTA were calculated using TD-DFT method. The third-order nonlinear absorption behaviour of LTA was studied using open aperture Z-scan technique, with 5ns laser pulses at 532nm and the nonlinear absorption coefficient of the grown crystal was measured. The predicted NLO properties, UV absorption and Z-scan studies indicate that LTA is an attractive material for laser frequency doubling and optical limiting applications.
