On the Structure of Aqueous Cesium Fluoride and Cesium Iodide Solutions: Diffraction Experiments, Molecular Dynamics Simulations, and Reverse Monte Carlo Modeling

Force field for halide and alkali ions in water based on single-ion and ion-pair thermodynamic properties for a wide range of concentrations

A classical non-polarizable force field for the common halide (F-, Cl-, Br-, and I-) and alkali (Li+, Na+, K+, and Cs+) ions in SPC/E water is presented. This is an extension of the force field developed by Loche et al. for Na+, K+, Cl-, and Br- (JPCB 125, 8581-8587, 2021): in the present work, we additionally optimize Lennard-Jones parameters for Li+, I-, Cs+, and F- ions. Li+ and F- are particularly challenging ions to model due to their small size. The force field is optimized with respect to experimental solvation free energies and activity coefficients, which are the necessary and sufficient quantities to accurately reproduce the electrolyte thermodynamics. Good agreement with experimental reference data is achieved for a wide range of concentrations (up to 4 mol/l). We find that standard Lorentz-Berthelot combination rules are sufficient for all ions except F-, for which modified combination rules are necessary. With the optimized parameters, we show that, although the force field is only optimized based on thermodynamic properties, structural properties are reproduced quantitatively, while ion diffusion coefficients are in qualitative agreement with experimental values.

On the Elusive Links between Solution Microstructure, Dynamics, and Solvation Thermodynamics: Demystifying the Path through a Bridge over Troubled Conjectures and Misinterpretations

We build a fundamentally based bridge between the solute-induced microstructural perturbation of the species environment and the dynamic as well as thermodynamic responses of the fluid system, regardless of the state conditions, composition, nature of the solvent, and either the magnitude or the type of solute-solvent intermolecular-interaction asymmetries. For that purpose, we advance a fluctuation-based solvation formalism of fluid mixtures to provide meaningful descriptors of solvation phenomena, the microstructural signatures of their solute-solvent intermolecular interaction asymmetry, and the thermodynamic manifestations linked to the solution nonideality. The rigorous foundations afford us to address some crucial issues frequently invoked in the literature including the microstructural perturbation domain, its proper identification and molecular-based meaning toward the interpretation of the solvation process, and the potential impact of the local differential behavior between anions and cations on the actual salt-induced perturbation of the solvent microstructure. Indeed, we link the precisely characterized species solvation behavior to fundamental thermodynamic residual-property relations, and the dynamics associated with either the viscous flow or diffusive behavior of the solvent, to finally illustrate their outcome with experimental data of aqueous electrolyte solutions from the available literature. Ultimately, this effort provides a highly desirable unambiguous identification of the cause-effect connections between the microstructurally perturbed domains and the experimentally measured macroscopic solvation properties, including their effect on the dynamics of the solvent environment. More importantly, it lends a well-established solvation framework to bridge rigorously the microstructural details of the mixture, its dynamics, and its solvation thermodynamics to enhance our understanding of well-defined ranked Hofmeister series, i.e., by avoiding ad hoc conjectures and unsupported microscopic interpretations of solvation phenomena.

Understanding the Anomalous Diffusion of Water in Aqueous Electrolytes Using Machine Learned Potentials

The diffusivity of water in aqueous cesium iodide solutions is larger than that in neat liquid water and vice versa for sodium chloride solutions. Such peculiar ion-specific behavior, called anomalous diffusion, is not reproduced in typical force field based molecular dynamics (MD) simulations due to inadequate treatment of ion-water interactions. Herein, this hurdle is tackled by using machine learned atomic potentials (MLPs) trained on data from density functional theory calculations. MLP based atomistic MD simulations of aqueous salt solutions reproduce experimentally determined thermodynamic, structural, dynamical, and transport properties, including their varied trends in water diffusivities across salt concentration. This enables an examination of their intermolecular structure to unravel the microscopic underpinnings of the differences in their transport properties. While both ions in CsI solutions contribute to the faster diffusion of water molecules, the competition between the heavy retardation by Na ions and the slight acceleration by Cl ions in NaCl solutions reduces their water diffusivity.

Renormalized site density functional theory for models of ion hydration

The development of accurate statistical mechanics models of molecular liquid systems is a problem of great practical and fundamental importance. Site-density functional theory (SDFT) is one of the promising directions in this area, but its success hinges upon the ability to efficiently reconcile the co-existence of two distinct intra- and inter-molecular interaction regimes in a molecular liquid. The renormalized formulation of SDFT (RSDFT), which we have recently developed, resolves this problem by introducing an additional potential field variable that decouples two interaction scales and maps the molecular liquid problem onto the effective simple liquid mixture. This work provides a critical assessment of RSDFT for the hydrated ion system-a problem that historically has always been one of the most difficult cases for SDFT applications. Using a two-site model of water, we perform a comprehensive analysis of hydrated alkali metal and halogen ions, including both structural and free energy based characteristics. The results indicate that RSDFT provides a significant improvement over conventional three-dimensional reference interaction site model implementations and may prove useful in coarse grained simulations based on two-site solvent models.

Understanding the electrochemistry of "water-in-salt" electrolytes: basal plane highly ordered pyrolytic graphite as a model system

A new approach to expand the accessible voltage window of electrochemical energy storage systems, based on so-called "water-in-salt" electrolytes, has been expounded recently. Although studies of transport in concentrated electrolytes date back over several decades, the recent demonstration that concentrated aqueous electrolyte systems can be used in the lithium ion battery context has rekindled interest in the electrochemical properties of highly concentrated aqueous electrolytes. The original aqueous lithium ion battery conception was based on the use of concentrated solutions of lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, although these electrolytes still possess some drawbacks including cost, toxicity, and safety. In this work we describe the electrochemical behavior of a simple 1 : 1 electrolyte based on highly concentrated aqueous solutions of potassium fluoride (KF). Highly ordered pyrolytic graphite (HOPG) is used as well-defined model carbon to study the electrochemical properties of the electrolyte, as well as its basal plane capacitance, from a microscopic perspective: the KF electrolyte exhibits an unusually wide potential window (up to 2.6 V). The faradaic response on HOPG is also reported using K3Fe(CN)6 as a model redox probe: the highly concentrated electrolyte provides good electrochemical reversibility and protects the HOPG surface from adsorption of contaminants. Moreover, this electrolyte was applied to symmetrical supercapacitors (using graphene and activated carbon as active materials) in order to quantify its performance in energy storage applications. It is found that the activated carbon and graphene supercapacitors demonstrate high gravimetric capacitance (221 F g-1 for activated carbon, and 56 F g-1 for graphene), a stable working voltage window of 2.0 V, which is significantly higher than the usual range of water-based capacitors, and excellent stability over 10 000 cycles. These results provide fundamental insight into the wider applicability of highly concentrated electrolytes, which should enable their application in future of energy storage technologies.

Aggregate Formation of Surface-Modified Nanoparticles in Solvents and Polymer Nanocomposites

A new method based on the combination of small-angle scattering, reverse Monte Carlo simulations, and an aggregate recognition algorithm is proposed to characterize the structure of nanoparticle suspensions in solvents and polymer nanocomposites, allowing detailed studies of the impact of different nanoparticle surface modifications. Experimental small-angle scattering is reproduced using simulated annealing of configurations of polydisperse particles in a simulation box compatible with the lowest experimental q-vector. Then, properties of interest like aggregation states are extracted from these configurations and averaged. This approach has been applied to silane surface-modified silica nanoparticles with different grafting groups, in solvents and after casting into polymer matrices. It is shown that the chemistry of the silane function, in particular mono- or trifunctionality possibly related to patch formation, affects the dispersion state in a given medium, in spite of an unchanged alkyl-chain length. Our approach may be applied to study any dispersion or aggregation state of nanoparticles. Concerning nanocomposites, the method has potential impact on the design of new formulations allowing controlled tuning of nanoparticle dispersion.

The hydration structure of the heavy-alkalines Rb+ and Cs+ through molecular dynamics and X-ray absorption spectroscopy: surface clusters and eccentricity

Hydration shells around Rb⁺ and Cs⁺ are not symmetric; the cation and the 1st-shell water mass center are separated by ∼0.4 Å, and this is supported by agreement between the theoretical and experimental EXAFS spectrum.

Surface modification of alumina-coated silica nanoparticles in aqueous sols with phosphonic acids and impact on nanoparticle interactions

It is often necessary to tailor nanoparticle (NP) interactions and their compatibility with a polymer matrix by grafting organic groups, but the commonly used silanization route offers little versatility, particularly in water. Herein, alumina-coated silica NPs in aqueous sols have been modified for the first time with low molecular-weight phosphonic acids (PAs) bearing organic groups of various hydrophobicities and charges: propyl, pentyl and octyl PAs, and two PAs bearing hydrophilic groups, either a neutral diethylene glycol (DEPA) or a potentially charged carboxylic acid (CAPA) group. The interactions and aggregation in the sols have been investigated using zeta potential measurements, dynamic light scattering, transmission electron microscopy, and small-angle scattering methods. The surface modification has been studied using FTIR and (31)P MAS NMR spectroscopies. Both high grafting density ρ and high hydrophobicity of the groups on the PAs induced aggregation, whereas suspensions of NPs grafted by DEPA remained stable up to the highest ρ. Unexpectedly, CAPA-modified NPs showed aggregation even at low ρ, suggesting that the carboxylic end group was also grafted to the surface. Surface modification of aqueous sols with PAs allows thus for the grafting of a higher density and a wider variety of organic groups than organosilanes, offering an increased control of the interactions between NPs, which is of interest for designing waterborne nanocomposites.

Structural modification by adding Li cations into Mg/Cs-TFSA molten salt facilitating Mg electrodeposition

Free volume around Mg ions in Li/Mg/Cs-TFSA by adding Li cations would facilitate the Mg electrodeposition, which has been studied by Raman spectroscopy, high-energy X-ray diffraction, and reverse Monte Carlo structural refinement using molecular mechanics.

Direct measurement of the Mn(II) hydration state in metal complexes and metalloproteins through 17O NMR line widths

Here we describe a simple method to estimate the inner-sphere hydration state of the Mn(II) ion in coordination complexes and metalloproteins. The line width of bulk H2(17)O is measured in the presence and absence of Mn(II) as a function of temperature, and transverse (17)O relaxivities are calculated. It is demonstrated that the maximum (17)O relaxivity is directly proportional to the number of inner-sphere water ligands (q). Using a combination of literature data and experimental data for 12 Mn(II) complexes, we show that this method provides accurate estimates of q with an uncertainty of ±0.2 water molecules. The method can be implemented on commercial NMR spectrometers working at fields of 7 T and higher. The hydration number can be obtained for micromolar Mn(II) concentrations. We show that the technique can be extended to metalloproteins or complex:protein interactions. For example, Mn(II) binds to the multimetal binding site A on human serum albumin with two inner-sphere water ligands that undergo rapid exchange (1.06 × 10(8) s(-1) at 37 °C). The possibility of extending this technique to other metal ions such as Gd(III) is discussed.
