Long Directional Interactions (LDIs) in Oligomeric Cofacial Silicon Phthalocyanines and Other Oligomeric and Polymeric Cofacial Phthalocyanines

Computational study of ground-state properties of μ2 -bridged group 14 porphyrinic sandwich complexes

The structural properties of μ₂ -bridged porphyrinic double-decker complexes are investigated and the influence of various ligands, metals, substituents, and bridging atoms on the dominant structural motif is elucidated. A variety of quantum chemical methods including semiempirical (SQM) methods and density functional theory (DFT) is assessed for the calculation of ecliptic and staggered conformational energies. Local coupled cluster (DLPNO-CCSD(T1)) data are generated for reference. The r² SCAN-3c composite scheme as well as the B2PLYP-D4/def2-QZVPP approach are identified as reliable methods. Energy decomposition analyses (EDA) and localized molecular orbital analyses (LMO) are used to investigate the bonding situation and the nature of the inter-ligand interaction energy underlining the crucial role of attractive London dispersion interactions. Targeted modification of the bridging atom, e.g., by replacing O^2- by S^2- is shown to drastically change the major structural features of the investigated complexes. Further, the influence of different substituents of varying size at the phthalocyanine ligand regarding the dominant conformation is described.

Interplay of π-stacking and inter-stacking interactions in two-component crystals of neutral closed-shell aromatic compounds: periodic DFT study

This paper bridges the gap between high-level ab initio computations of gas-phase models of 1 : 1 arene–arene complexes and calculations of the two-component (binary) organic crystals using atom–atom potentials. The studied crystals consist of electron-rich and electron-deficient compounds, which form infinite stacks (columns) of heterodimers. The sublimation enthalpy of crystals has been evaluated by DFT periodic calculations, while intermolecular interactions have been characterized by Bader analysis of the periodic electronic density. The consideration of aromatic compounds without a dipole moment makes it possible to reveal the contribution of quadrupole–quadrupole interactions to the π-stacking energy. These interactions are significant for heterodimers formed by arenes with more than 2 rings, with absolute values of the traceless quadrupole moment (Q_zz) larger than 10 D Å. The further aggregation of neighboring stacks is due to the C–H⋯F interactions in arene/perfluoroarene crystals. In crystals consisting of arene and an electron-deficient compound such as pyromellitic dianhydride, aggregation occurs due to the C–H⋯O interactions. The C–H⋯F and C–H⋯O inter-stacking interactions make the main contribution to the sublimation enthalpy, which exceeds 150 kJ mol⁻¹ for the two-component crystals formed by arenes with more than 2 rings.

Structural Data Showing the Existence of LDI Bonds between the Rings of Dimeric Cofacial Siloxysilicon Phthalocyanines

In a pair of earlier papers, the existence of long directional interaction bonds, LDI bonds, was postulated on the basis of data for cofacial oligomeric siloxysilicon phthalocyanines from this laboratory and data for other cofacial oligomeric phthalocyanines from the literature. However, the combined data are not fully suited to the purpose for which they were used. Here an alternative approach is taken in which a carefully chosen group of dimeric cofacial siloxysilicon phthalocyanines is used. Structural data derived from these phthalocyanines is examined in some detail to determine where it conforms to normal expectations and where it does not. To a high degree of certainty, consideration of the results obtained shows that long directional (LDI) bonds exist in dimeric cofacial siloxysilicon phthalocyanines. The new data also provide an opportunity for other research on chemical bonds.
