Abstract
The structures and reactions of pyridine (Pyd) cluster cations in a supersonic molecular beam generated upon photoionization at 9.2-9.4 eV were investigated by infrared (IR) action spectroscopy. The mass spectrum showed prominent peaks of (Pyd)m+ and H+(Pyd)m, m = 1-5. In the pyridine/pyridine-d5 mixture, the mass pattern indicated that H+ and D+ migrated during the formation and dissociation of the cluster cations. The IR photodissociation spectra of both (Pyd)2+ and H+(Pyd)2 revealed a N-H stretching band near 3400 cm-1, indicating that their structures are 1-(2-pyridyl)pyridin-1-ium and pyridinium-pyridine, respectively. Observation of the former product implies that the reaction proceeds via an α-distonic cation intermediate, while the latter product is formed via proton migration. The IR spectra of (Pyd)m+ and H+(Pyd)m, m ≥ 3, suggested that these clusters consist of a covalently bound (Pyd)2+ or H+(Pyd)2 core, respectively, with additional pyridines attached to them via hydrogen bonds and/or weak dispersive interactions.

Abstract
Elucidating the dynamic couplings of hydrogen bonds remains an important and challenging goal for spectroscopic studies of bulk systems, because their vibrational signatures are masked by the collective effects of the fluctuation of many hydrogen bonds. Here we utilize size-selected infrared spectroscopy based on a tunable vacuum ultraviolet free electron laser to unmask the vibrational signatures for the dynamic couplings in neutral trimethylamine-water and trimethylamine-methanol complexes, as microscopic models with only one single hydrogen bond holding two molecules. Surprisingly broad progression of OH stretching peaks with distinct intensity modulation over ∼700 cm-1 is observed for trimethylamine-water, while the dramatic reduction of this progression in the trimethylamine-methanol spectrum offers direct experimental evidence for the dynamic couplings. State-of-the-art quantum mechanical calculations reveal that such dynamic couplings are originated from strong Fermi resonance between the stretches of hydrogen-bonded OH and several motions of the solvent water/methanol, such as translation, rocking, and bending, which are significant in various solvated complexes commonly found in atmospheric and biological systems.

Abstract
We report the vibrational spectra of the hydronium and methyl-ammonium ions captured in the C3v binding pocket of the 18-crown-6 ether ionophore. Although the NH stretching bands of the CH3NH3+ ion are consistent with harmonic expectations, the OH stretching bands of H3O+ are surprisingly broad, appearing as a diffuse background absorption with little intensity modulation over 800 cm-1 with an onset ∼400 cm-1 below the harmonic prediction. This structure persists even when only a single OH group is present in the HD2O+ isotopologue, while the OD stretching region displays a regular progression involving a soft mode at about 85 cm-1 These results are rationalized in a vibrationally adiabatic (VA) model in which the motion of the H3O+ ion in the crown pocket is strongly coupled with its OH stretches. In this picture, H3O+ resides in the center of the crown in the vibrational zero-point level, while the minima in the VA potentials associated with the excited OH vibrational states are shifted away from the symmetrical configuration displayed by the ground state. Infrared excitation between these strongly H/D isotope-dependent VA potentials then accounts for most of the broadening in the OH stretching manifold. Specifically, low-frequency motions involving concerted motions of the crown scaffold and the H3O+ ion are driven by a Franck-Condon-like mechanism. In essence, vibrational spectroscopy of these systems can be viewed from the perspective of photochemical interconversion between transient, isomeric forms of the complexes corresponding to the initial stage of intermolecular proton transfer.
