Crystallization and vitrification of a cyanurate trimer in nanopores

Polymerization Kinetics of Cyanate Ester Confined to Hydrophilic Nanopores of Silica Colloidal Crystals with Different Surface-Grafted Groups

This study investigates the kinetics of confined polymerization of bisphenol E cyanate ester in the nanopores of the three types of silica colloidal crystals that differ in the concentration and acidity of the surface-grafted proton-donor groups. In all three types of pores, the polymerization has released less heat and demonstrated a very similar significant acceleration as compared to the bulk process. Isoconversional kinetic analysis of the differential scanning calorimetry measurements has revealed that the confinement causes not only a dramatic change in the Arrhenius parameters, but also in the reaction model of the polymerization process. The obtained results have been explained by the active role of the silica surface that can adsorb the residual phenols and immobilize intermediate iminocarbonate products by reaction of the monomer molecules with the surface silanols. The observed acceleration has been quantified by introducing a new isoconversional-isothermal acceleration factor Zα,T that affords comparing the process rates at respectively identical conversions and temperatures. In accord with this factor, the confined polymerization is 15-30 times faster than that in bulk.

The Effect of Surface Chemistry on the Glass Transition of Polycarbonate Inside Cylindrical Nanopores

The effect of surface chemistry on the glass transition of polycarbonate (PC) inside cylindrical nanopores is studied. Polycarbonate is melt-wetted into nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) treated with hydrophobic alkyl- and fluorosilanes of varying length. The curvature observed at the nanowire tips is consistent with a contact angle descriptive of polycarbonate-AAO surface interactions. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) thermograms reveal a distinct broadening of the T_g that is related to the motion of polymer chains at the nanopore wall as well as at the core. DSC and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) show that polycarbonate infiltrated into a naked AAO template (without silane treatment) degrades upon heating, suggestive of a surface-catalyzed degradation mechanism. It is further shown that silane treatment largely prevents PC thermal degradation.

Thermal characterization of static and dynamical properties of the confined molecular systems interacting through dispersion force

We investigated the thermal properties of liquid methylcyclohexane and racemic sec-butylcyclohexane, as representatives of a molecular system with only dispersion-force intermolecular interactions, confined in the pores (thickness/diameter d = 12, 6, 1.1 nm) of silica gels by adiabatic calorimetry. The results imply a heterogeneous picture for molecular aggregate under confinement consisting of an interfacial region and an inner pore one. In the vicinity of a glass-transition temperature T(g,bulk) of bulk liquid, two distinguishable relaxation phenomena were observed for the confined systems and their origins were attributed to the devitrification, namely glass transition, processes of (1) a layer of interfacial molecules adjacent to the pore walls and (2) the molecules located in the middle of the pore. A third glass-transition phenomenon was observed at lower temperatures and ascribed to a secondary relaxation process. The glass transition of the interfacial-layer molecules was found to proceed at temperatures rather above T(g,bulk), whereas that of the molecules located in the inner pore region occurred at temperatures below T(g,bulk). We discuss the reason why the molecules located in different places in the pores reveal the respectively different dynamical properties.
