Role of Specific Interactions on the Rotational Diffusion of Organic Solutes in a Protic Ionic Liquid–Propylammonium Nitrate

Probing the heterogeneity of molecular level organization of ionic liquids: a comparative study using neutral Nile red and cationic Nile blue sulfate as fluorescent probes for butyrolactam-based protic ionic liquids

Ionic liquids (ILs) are liquid salts composed of cations and anions, known for their significant local heterogeneity at the molecular level. To understand the microheterogeneity with regard to their local polarity and local viscosity, we have used two structurally similar but chemically distinguishable fluorescent probes: Nile red (NR), a neutral molecule, and Nile blue sulfate (NBS), a charged molecule. A comparative study of the response of the two probes to the molecular level heterogeneity of ILs is expected to provide a better clarity of understanding regarding the charged polar domain and the uncharged hydrophobic domain of ILs. Towards this, we synthesized two butyrolactam-based protic ionic liquids (PILs), i.e., BTF and BTD, with the same ionic headgroup ([BT]+) and different alkyl tails ([RCOO]-), where {R = H, C11H23}. BTF has no significant hydrophobic domain, whereas BTD has a larger hydrophobic domain. Temperature-dependent fluorescence parameters such as fluorescence intensity, lifetime, and anisotropy were measured for both NR and NBS molecules. The use of a pair of structurally similar but ionically different probes enables differential estimation of parameters like the microviscosity of a domain using the fluorescence anisotropy parameter (r). The absorption and emission spectra of both probe molecules are observed to be blue shifted upon going from BTF to BTD. NR showed a significant blue shift in absorption and emission band maxima. Conversely, NBS exhibited a small wavelength shift, possibly influenced by the preferred location of their charged head group domain. Temperature-dependent rotational relaxation time (θ) of NR in BTD is smaller than that of NBS by 60-70%, indicating that stronger charge-charge interactions exist between the polar domain of BTD and NBS. Moreover, it is observed that the local viscosity of the BTF IL around both probes is similar, whereas there is a considerable difference for the BTD IL. These results are an indication that NBS being charged prefers to locate itself in the charged head group region of the IL, whereas NR being neutral tends to reside both in the hydrophobic domain and in the head group but is predominantly located in the hydrophobic domain.

Orientational wetting and dynamical correlations toward glass transition on the surface of imidazolium-based ionic liquids

Surface induces many fascinating physical phenomena, such as dynamic acceleration, surface anchoring, and orientational wetting, and, thus, is of great interest to study. Here, we report classic molecular dynamics simulations on the free-standing surface of imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) [C4mim][PF6] and [C10mim][PF6]. On [C10mim][PF6] surface, a significant orientational wetting is observed, with the wetting strength showing a diverging tendency. Depth of the wetting was captured from the density and orientational order profile by a static length, which remarkably increases below the temperature Tstat upon cooling down. The dynamical correlation length that measures the distance of surface-dynamics acceleration into the bulk was characterized via the spatial-dependent mobility. The translational correlation exhibits a similar drastic increment at Tstat, while the rotational correlation drastically increases at a lower temperature Trot. We connect these results to the dynamics in bulk liquids, by finding Tstat and Trot that correspond to the onset temperatures where the liquids become cooperative for translational and rotational relaxation, respectively. This signifies the importance of collective dynamics in the bulk on the orientational wetting and surface dynamics in the ILs.

Is Solute Rotation in an Ionic Liquid Influenced by the Addition of Glucose?

Fluorescence anisotropy measurements and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed to understand the specific interactions of two structurally similar nondipolar solutes, 2,5-dimethyl-1,4-dioxo-3,6-diphenylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DMDPP) and 1,4-dioxo-3,6-diphenylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DPP), with neat 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([BMIM][N(CN)₂]) and also in the presence of glucose. It has been observed that the measured reorientation times of DMDPP in neat [BMIM][N(CN)₂] follow the predictions of the Stokes-Einstein-Debye hydrodynamic theory with slip boundary condition. Addition of glucose (0.075 and 0.15 mole fraction) has no bearing on the rotational diffusion of the solute apart from the viscosity related effects. In contrast, the reorientation times of DPP in neat [BMIM][N(CN)₂] obey stick boundary condition as the hydrogen bond donating solute experiences specific interactions with the dicyanamide anion. No influence of the additive can be noticed on the rotational diffusion of DPP at 0.075 mole fraction of glucose. However, at 0.15 mole fraction of glucose, the reorientation times of the solute at a given viscosity and temperature decrease by 15-40% compared to those obtained in the neat ionic liquid. MD simulations indicate that each DPP molecule hydrogen bonds with two dicyanamide anions in neat ionic liquid. The simulations also reveal that, at 0.15 mole fraction of glucose, the concentration of anions hydrogen bonded to glucose increases significantly; therefore, the percentage of solute molecules that can form hydrogen bonds with two dicyanamide anions decreases to 84, which leads to faster rotation of DPP.

Translational and Rotational Diffusion of Two Differently Charged Solutes in Ethylammonium Nitrate-Methanol Mixture: Does the Nanostructure of the Amphiphiles Influence the Motion of the Solute?

In this Article, we have investigated the translational and rotational diffusion of two structurally similar but differently charged solutes (rhodamine 6G perchlorate and fluorescein sodium salt) in ethylammonium nitrate (EAN)-methanol (CH3OH) mixture to understand the effect of added ionic liquid on the motion of the solutes. EAN and CH3OH both are amphiphilic molecules and characterized by an extended hydrogen bonding network. Recently, Russina et al. found that a wide distribution of clusters exist in the CH3OH rich region (0.10 ≤ χEAN ≤ 0.15) and EAN molecules preserve their bulk-sponge-like morphology (Russina, O.; Sferrazza, A.; Caminiti, R.; Triolo, A. J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 2014, 5, 1738-1742). The effect of this microheterogeneous mixture on the solute's motion shows some interesting results compared to other PIL (protic ionic liquid)-cosolvent mixtures. Analysis of the time-resolved anisotropy data with the aid of Stokes-Einstein-Debye (SED) hydrodynamic theory predicts that the reorientation time of both of the solutes appears close to the stick hydrodynamic line in the methanol rich region. The hydrogen bond accepting solutes experience specific interaction with CH3OH, and with increasing concentration of EAN, the specific interaction between the solute and solvent molecules is decreased while the decrease is more prominent in the low mole fraction of EAN due to the large size of cluster formation. The temperature dependent anisotropy measurements show that the hydrogen bonding interaction between EAN and CH3OH is increased with increasing temperature. Moreover, fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS) shows the dynamic heterogeneity of the mixture which is due to the segregation of the alkyl chain of the PIL. Formation of a large cluster at a low mole fraction of IL (0.10 ≤ χEAN ≤ 0.15) can be proved by the insensitivity of the translational diffusion and rotational activation energy of the solutes to the concentration of EAN. Thus, the result of the work suggests that the addition of EAN to the CH3OH affects the specific interaction between solute and solvent and, as a consequence, the translational motion as well as the rotational motion of the solutes are modulated.

The origin of surfactant amphiphilicity and self-assembly in protic ionic liquids

The nature of amphiphilic self-assembly in alkylammonium protic ionic liquids (PILs) is examined by systematically varying the ionic structure and composition, H-bonding capacity, and nanostructure of both the PIL and micelle-forming cationic surfactant, and contrasted with self-assembly in water. Using small-angle neutron scattering, micelle structure and concentrations are determined for primary - quaternary dodecylammonium salts in nitrate and thiocyanate PILs. While the solvophobic driving force depends only on the average polarity of the PIL, surprisingly strong, specific interactions of the head group and counterion with the PIL H-bond network are found. This suggests the importance of developing designer amphiphiles for assembling soft matter structures in PILs.

Does addition of an electrolyte influence the rotational diffusion of nondipolar solutes in a protic ionic liquid?

Rotational diffusion of two structurally similar nondipolar solutes, 2,5-dimethyl-1,4-dioxo-3,6-diphenylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DMDPP) and 1,4-dioxo-3,6-diphenylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DPP), has been examined in ethylammonium nitrate-lithium nitrate (EAN-LiNO3) mixtures to understand the influence of added electrolyte on the local environment experienced by the solute molecules. The measured reorientation times of both DMDPP and DPP in EAN-LiNO3 mixtures fall within the broad limits set by the hydrodynamic slip and stick boundary conditions. The hydrogen bond accepting DMDPP and the hydrogen bond donating DPP experience specific interactions with the cation and anion of the ionic liquid, respectively. Addition of LiNO3 (0.1 and 0.2 mole fraction) to EAN induces only viscosity related effects on the rotational diffusion of the two nondipolar solutes. These observations suggest that the local environment experienced by DMDPP and DPP in EAN is not altered upon the addition of LiNO3. Our results are consistent with the structural details available in the literature for EAN-LiNO3 mixtures.
