Abstract
The present work has been undertaken with an objective to understand the differences in the local structural organization of imidazolium-based monocationic ionic liquids (MILs) and dicationic ionic liquids (DILs) through resonance energy-transfer (RET) studies. In this study, a neat IL is used as a donor and a charged species rhodamine 6G (R6G) is used as an acceptor unit because of the fact that they satisfy the spectroscopic criteria that are needed for an RET event to take place. Additionally, R6G, being a charged species, is expected to facilitate the electrostatic interactions with the ILs which are also charged. Specifically, two imidazolium-based germinal DILs and their monocationic counterparts are used for the present investigations. Additionally, the studies are carried out in some selected MILs where the lengths of the alkyl side chains are kept unchanged for MILs and DILs. Interestingly, the present data reveal that the RET interaction is more favorable for DILs than for MILs, even though the DILs are relatively bulkier than their monocationic counterparts. More interestingly, the RET interaction is also found to be more favorable for DILs than for MILs, where the length of the alkyl group is kept fixed for MILs and DILs. The result of the present study delineates that the alkyl chain length on the cation is not the sole factor contributing to the RET outcomes for DILs and MILs but the local structure of DILs also contributes significantly to the same. The current investigation clearly indicates that DILs have a more compact local structure than that of MILs. Essentially, the current study highlights that a cost-effective, noninvasive technique such as RET is quite effective in capturing the differences in the nanostructural organization of MILs and DILs.

Abstract
Dynamic Stokes shift measurements report on structural relaxation, driven by a dipole created in a chromophore by its excitation from the ground electronic state to the S1 state. Here, we demonstrate that it is also possible to have an additional contribution from orientational relaxation of the Stokes shift chromophore. This effect, called reorientation-induced Stokes shift (RISS), can be observed when the reorientation of the chromophore and the solvent structural relaxation occur on similar time scales. Through a vector interaction, the electronic transition of the chromophore couples to its environment. The orientational diffusive motions of the chromophores will have a slight bias toward reducing the transition energy (red shift) as do the solvent structural diffusive motions. RISS is manifested in the polarization-dependence of the fluorescence Stokes shift using coumarin 153 (C153) in poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA). A similar phenomenon, reorientation-induced spectral diffusion (RISD), has been observed and theoretically explicated in the context of two dimensional infrared (2D IR) experiments. Here, we generalize the existing RISD theory to include properties of electronic transitions that generally are not present in vibrational transitions. Expressions are derived that permit determination of the structural dynamics by accounting for the RISS contributions. Using these generalized equations, the structural dynamics of the medium can be measured for any system in which the directional interaction is well represented by a first order Stark effect and RISS or RISD is observed. The theoretical results are applied to the PMMA data, and the structural dynamics are obtained and discussed.

Abstract
In this contribution, we have examined a composition dependent self aggregated structural modification of a catanionic mixture of the surface active ionic liquid (IL) 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium octyl sulphate and a cationic gemini surfactant (14-5-14) in aqueous medium. We have observed that the hydrodynamic diameter of the aggregates increases with increasing IL concentration and microscopic evidence (HRTEM, FESEM, and LCSM) shows the formation of vesicle like aggregates (Dh ≈ 200 nm) at XIL = 0.5. The steady state fluorescence anisotropy of the membrane binding probe DPH shows a micelle to vesicle transition at this composition. The viscosity of the solution shows a peak at XIL = 0.3, indicating the formation of a worm like micelle as an intermediate of the micelle to vesicle transition. The rotational dynamics shows a stiffer surfactant packing in the vesicles compared to the micelles, whereas, the solvation dynamics measurements indicate a higher abundance of bound type water in the vascular medium compared to that for the micelle. The formed vesicles also show stability towards temperature and biomolecules, which can be used for respective applications.

Abstract
With an aim to understand the behavior in terms of the intermolecular interactions, structure and dynamics of dicationic and monocationic ionic liquids (ILs), two imidazolium-based dicationic ionic liquids (DILs), 1,8-bis-(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)octane bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([C8(mim)2][NTf2]2), 1,9-bis-(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)nonane bis-(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([C9(mim)2][NTf2]2), and one monocationic ionic liquid (MIL), 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide ([C4(mim)][NTf2]), have been investigated through combined fluorescence, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), NMR and fluorescence correlation spectroscopy (FCS). The DILs were synthesized by following a standard synthetic protocol and subsequently characterized by different analytical techniques. Steady state absorption, emission and EPR spectroscopic data reveal that DILs are less polar compared to MIL. The polarities of the DILs and MIL were found to be close to those of acetonitrile and short chain alcohols, respectively. The excitation wavelength dependent emission data reveals that DILs are more micro-heterogeneous in nature than MIL. The rotational diffusion of two organic solutes, perylene and 8-methoxypyrene-1,3,6-sulfonate (MPTS), were examined in the DILs and MIL. The rotational diffusion data for perylene and MPTS were analyzed in light of the Stokes-Einstein-Debye (SED) hydrodynamic theory. The rotation of perylene in the DILs was observed to be relatively faster to that in the MIL, and it goes beyond the limit predicted by the SED theory. In order to explain the rotational motion of perylene in DILs, the data was analyzed further by invoking quasi-hydrodynamic theory. The observed rotational behavior of perylene has been explained by considering the fact that perylene is located in the nonpolar region of ILs, and larger solvent molecules (DILs) induce a lower friction to the rotating solute. Interestingly, unlike perylene, rotations of MPTS in both of the ILs were observed to be much hindered indicating a relatively stronger MPTS-IL interaction than perylene-IL interaction. More interestingly, rotation of MPTS was observed to be faster in the DILs than that in the MIL despite the fact that DILs are more viscous than MILs. Relatively faster rotation of MPTS in DILs has been explained by resorting to NMR and FCS studies. The outcomes of the NMR and FCS studies revealed that DILs in the experimental condition exist in their folded form and because of this structural restriction of DILs it becomes difficult for the bulky MPTS to make stronger hydrogen bonding interactions with DILs, which eventually makes the rotation of MPTS in DILs faster. Essentially, the outcomes of all of these studies have demonstrated that the behavior of DILs is quite different to that of the usual MILs.

Abstract
Existence of microheterogeneity of imidazolium and piperidinium cation-based ionic liquids (ILs) containing PF6 and NTf2 anions has been investigated by 1D and 2D NMR spectroscopy. 2D NMR (especially NOESY and HOESY) has been employed for studying the interactions present between cation and anion as well as the intermolecular interaction among cations. HOESY spectrum shows that fluorine of anion ( PF6- and NTf2-) significantly interacts with proton of the cations. Combined results of HOESY and NOESY for imidazolium IL indicate that the PF6- and imidazolium cation are distributed in organized manner, resulting a heterogeneous environment in liquid state. We have also observed existence of heterogeneous environment for piperidinium cation-based ILs which is different from imidazolium ILs. It appears that existence of microheterogeneity in IL is ubiquitous and therefore open up the ILs field to revisit. Copyright © 2017 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Abstract
Fluorescence anisotropy measurements and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations have been performed to understand the specific interactions of two structurally similar nondipolar solutes, 2,5-dimethyl-1,4-dioxo-3,6-diphenylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DMDPP) and 1,4-dioxo-3,6-diphenylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DPP), with neat 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide ([BMIM][N(CN)2]) and also in the presence of glucose. It has been observed that the measured reorientation times of DMDPP in neat [BMIM][N(CN)2] follow the predictions of the Stokes-Einstein-Debye hydrodynamic theory with slip boundary condition. Addition of glucose (0.075 and 0.15 mole fraction) has no bearing on the rotational diffusion of the solute apart from the viscosity related effects. In contrast, the reorientation times of DPP in neat [BMIM][N(CN)2] obey stick boundary condition as the hydrogen bond donating solute experiences specific interactions with the dicyanamide anion. No influence of the additive can be noticed on the rotational diffusion of DPP at 0.075 mole fraction of glucose. However, at 0.15 mole fraction of glucose, the reorientation times of the solute at a given viscosity and temperature decrease by 15-40% compared to those obtained in the neat ionic liquid. MD simulations indicate that each DPP molecule hydrogen bonds with two dicyanamide anions in neat ionic liquid. The simulations also reveal that, at 0.15 mole fraction of glucose, the concentration of anions hydrogen bonded to glucose increases significantly; therefore, the percentage of solute molecules that can form hydrogen bonds with two dicyanamide anions decreases to 84, which leads to faster rotation of DPP.

Abstract
Microscopic solvation environments in a prototype ionic liquid, bmimTf2N; 1-butyl-3-methyl-imidazolium-bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, have been studied with the use of halides, X2 and Xn- (X=I, Br; n=3,5), as molecular probes. Resonance Raman spectroscopy has been used to detect these halogen species existing in bmimTf2N as well as in reference solvents including heptane, cyclohexane, KX/H2O and benzene. In heptane and cyclohexane, only free X2 species are detected. In KX/H2O, only Xn- and, in benzene, only benzene-X2 complexes are detected. On the contrary, free X2 and Xn- are concomitantly detected in bmimTf2N, indicating that there are two distinct solvation environments in bmimTf2N, non-polar environments that solvate free X2 and polar environments that stabilize Xn-. These two distinct solvation environments are most likely to arise from microscopic structural heterogeneity of ionic liquids.

Abstract
Steady-state absorption and fluorescence as well as time-resolved fluorescence of coumarin 151 (C151) and coumarin 153 (C153) were measured in hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquids ([HOEmim][BF4] and [HOEmim][N(CN)2]) and in nonhydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquids ([Emim][BF4] and [Emim][N(CN)2]). Both the steady-state fluorescence and time-resolved fluorescence observations reveal that hydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquid quenches the fluorescence of C153 while the nonhydroxyl-functionalized ionic liquid does not. We also measured the time-resolved fluorescence anisotropy of C151 and C153 in both [HOEmim][BF4] and [Emim][BF4]. It is found that the ratio of the rotational relaxation lifetime of C153 in [HOEmim][BF4] with respect to that in [Emim][BF4] is about 15% larger than that of C151 in [HOEmim][BF4] with respect to that in [Emim][BF4], indicating extra interaction between C153 and [HOEmim][BF4] exists except the effect of the viscosity of ionic liquid.

Abstract
Steady state, time-resolved fluorescence and NMR experiments are carried out to gain deeper insights into the structure-property correlation in structurally similar monocationic and dicationic room-temperature ionic liquids (RTILs). The excitation wavelength dependent fluorescence response of fluorophore in 1-methy-3-propyllimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide [C3MIm][NTf2] is found to be different from that of 1,6-bis(3-methylimidazolium-1-yl)hexane bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide [C6(MIm)2][NTf2]2 and 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide [C6MIm][NTf2]. The outcomes of the present solvent dynamics study in [C3MIm][NTf2] when compared with those in [C6(MIm)2][NTf2]2 and in [C6MIm][NTf2] from our previous studies (Phys. Chem. Chem. Phys. 2014, 16, 12918-12928) indicate the involvement of dipolar rotation of imidazolium cation during solvation. To correlate the findings of solvation dynamics study with the dipolar rotation of the imidazolium ring, pulsed-field gradient (PFG)-NMR technique for translational diffusion coefficient measurement and (1)H as well as (19)F spin-lattice relaxation measurements are employed. NMR investigation reveals that an ultrafast component of solvation can be related to the dipolar rotation of imidazolium cation; hence, the role of dipolar rotation of cations in governing the dynamics of solvation in ILs cannot be ignored. Analysis of the rotational relaxation dynamics data by the Stokes-Einstein-Debye hydrodynamic theory unveils distinctive features of solute-solvent interaction in [C3MIm][NTf2] and [C6(MIm)2][NTf2]2.

Abstract
The effects of interionic hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interactions on the physical properties of a new series of picrate anion based ionic liquids (ILs) have been investigated experimentally and theoretically. The existence of aromatic (C2-HO) and aliphatic (C7-HO-N22 and C6-HO-N20) hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking interactions in these ILs has been observed using various spectroscopic techniques. The aromatic and aliphatic C-HO hydrogen bonding interactions are found to have a crucial role in binding the imidazolium cation and picrate anion together. However, the π-π stacking interactions between two successive layers are found to play a decisive role in tight packing in ILs leading to differences in physical properties. The drastic difference in the melting points of the methyl and propyl derivatives (mmimPic and pmimPic respectively) have been found to be primarily due to the difference in the strength and varieties of π-π stacking interactions. While in mmimPic, several different types of π-π stacking interactions between the aromatic rings (such as picrate-picrate, picrate-imidazole and imidazolium-imidazolium cation rings) are observed, only one type of π-π stacking interaction (picrate-picrate rings) is found to exist in the pmimPic IL. NMR spectroscopic studies reveal that the interaction of these ILs with solvent molecules is different and depends on the dielectric constant of the solvent. While an ion solvation model explains the solvation in high dielectric solvents, an ion-pair solvation model is found to be more appropriate for low dielectric constant solvents. The enhanced stability of these investigated picrate ILs compared with that of inorganic picrate salts under high doses of γ radiation clearly indicates the importance of weak interionic interactions in ILs, and also opens up the possibility of the application of picrate ILs as prospective diluents in nuclear separation for advanced fuel cycling process.

Abstract
We have studied the photophysics and rotational diffusion of hydrophilic solute 7-(N, N'-diethylamino)coumarin-3-carboxylic acid (7-DCCA) in a room temperature ionic liquid methyltrioctylammonium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl) imide ([N1888 ][NTf2 ]). Comparison of activation energies of viscous flow and nonradiative decay shows that the photophysical properties of 7-DCCA are not guided by the bulk viscosity of the medium but are dependent on the specific solute solvent interaction and structural heterogeneity of the medium. The rotational relaxation behaviour of 7-DCCA in [N1888 ][NTf2] shows significant deviation from the Stokes Einstein Debye hydrodynamic model of rotational diffusion. This is indicative of the influence of specific solute solvent interaction on the rotational relaxation behaviour of 7-DCCA. Comparison of activation energy of rotational relaxation with activation energy of viscous flow clearly reinforces our assumption that the structural heterogeneity of the medium and specific solute solvent interaction plays a dominant role on the rotational diffusion instead of bulk viscosity.

Abstract
Rotational diffusion of two structurally similar nondipolar solutes, 2,5-dimethyl-1,4-dioxo-3,6-diphenylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DMDPP) and 1,4-dioxo-3,6-diphenylpyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole (DPP), has been examined in ethylammonium nitrate-lithium nitrate (EAN-LiNO3) mixtures to understand the influence of added electrolyte on the local environment experienced by the solute molecules. The measured reorientation times of both DMDPP and DPP in EAN-LiNO3 mixtures fall within the broad limits set by the hydrodynamic slip and stick boundary conditions. The hydrogen bond accepting DMDPP and the hydrogen bond donating DPP experience specific interactions with the cation and anion of the ionic liquid, respectively. Addition of LiNO3 (0.1 and 0.2 mole fraction) to EAN induces only viscosity related effects on the rotational diffusion of the two nondipolar solutes. These observations suggest that the local environment experienced by DMDPP and DPP in EAN is not altered upon the addition of LiNO3. Our results are consistent with the structural details available in the literature for EAN-LiNO3 mixtures.

Abstract
Structural and dynamical properties related to the adsorption of nonionic surfactants at vacuum/ionic liquid interfaces were studied using molecular dynamics simulations. Specifically, the surface activity of pentaethylene glycol monododecyl ether (C12E5) was investigated at the free interface of an imidazolium-based room temperature ionic liquid (RTIL), at different surface densities. At low surface coverages, the incorporation of C12E5 does not produce meaningful changes in the vacuum/RTIL interface: the C12E5 hydrophobic tails remain entangled with those of the RTIL cation groups in the outer shell, whereas the C12E5 hydrophilic heads reside at an inner layer. At high surface coverages, the structure in the substrate-in terms of the features exhibited by the local density profiles-practically vanishes; the interface becomes wider and the surfactant molecules shift toward more external positions. Information about the local structure of the interface at high surface densities can be recovered by performing a tessellation procedure. For the sake of comparison, the surface behavior of two commonly used ionic surfactants, sodium dodecyl sulfate and dodecyl trimethyl ammonium chloride, were also studied. The modifications in the width and structure of the bare vacuum/RTIL interface due to the presence of the ionic surfactants are markedly milder than those observed for the nonionic surfactant. Moreover, the RTIL seemed to behave as a better solvent for the chloride counterions than for sodium ones; which were found to remain bound to the surfactant head groups. An analysis of the dynamics at the surface was also performed. Our results indicate that the presence of increasing amounts of nonionic surfactants leads to a gradual reduction of the mobility of the RTIL species. When ionic surfactants are adsorbed, these retardations are even more severe for the surfactant head groups, where the corresponding diffusion coefficients show reductions of practically 1 order of magnitude.
