Abstract
Starting from tetrakis(trimethylsilyl)cyclobutadiene and an amidinate-supported silylene of the Roesky-type, a sequence of addition and reduction cleanly gives the elusive silapyramidane via an isolable cyclobutene intermediate with an exocyclic Si═C bond. The silapyramidane features an unusually shielded 29Si NMR resonance at -448.3 ppm for the apex silicon atom. Treatment with Fe2(CO)9 results in the formation of the corresponding silapyramidane-iron complex. Silapyramidane also reacts with the cyclobutadiene starting material to cleanly afford a fluorescent spirobis(silole).

Abstract
Ab initio molecular orbital theory is used to study the structures of six and eight π-electron bare rings of group-XIV elements, and even larger [n]annulenes up to C18H18, including some of their mono-, di-, tri-, and tetra-anions. While some of the above rings are planar, others are nonplanar. A much spotlighted case is cyclo-octatetraene (C8H8), which is predicted to be nonplanar together with its heavier group-XIV analogues Si8H8 and Ge8H8, with the solely planar members of its family having the stoichiometric formulas C4Si4H8 and C4Ge4H8. A similar situation arises with the six π-electron bare rings, where benzene and substituted ones up to C3Si3H6 or so are planar, while others are not. However, the explanations encountered in the literature find support in ab initio calculations for such species, often rationalized from distinct calculated features. Using second-order Møller-Plesset perturbation theory and, when affordable (particularly tetratomics, which may allow even higher levels), the coupled-cluster method including single, double, and perturbative triple excitations, a common rationale is suggested based on a novel concept of quasi-molecules or the (3+4)-atom partition scheme. Any criticism of tautology is therefore avoided. The same analysis has also been successfully applied to even larger [n]annulenes, to their mixed family members involving silicon and germanium atoms, and to the C18 carbon ring. Furthermore, it has been extended to annulene anions to check the criteria of the popular Hückel rule for planarity and aromaticity. Exploratory work on cycloarenes is also reported. Besides a partial study of the involved potential energy surfaces, equilibrium geometries and harmonic vibrational frequencies have been calculated anew, for both the parent and the actual prototypes of the quasi-molecules.

Abstract
By employing density functional theory (DFT) calculations we show that mono- and disilicon substitution in polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, having two to four benzene units, quenches their triplet state antiaromaticity by creating Hückel aromatic (poly)benzenoid subunit(s) and weakly antiaromatic, or almost nonaromatic silacycle. Therefore, such systems are predicted to be globally aromatic in both the ground state and the first excited triplet state. Putting the silicon atom(s) into various positions of a hydrocarbon provides an opportunity to tune the singlet-triplet energy gaps. They depend on the global aromaticity degree which, in turn, depends on the type of aromatic carbocyclic subunit(s) and the extent of their aromaticity. On the basis of the set of studied compounds, some preliminary rules on how to regulate the extent of global, semiglobal and local aromaticity are proposed. The results of this work extend the importance of Hückel aromaticity concept to excited triplet states which are usually characterized by the Baird type of (anti)aromaticity.

Abstract
Reactions of isolable disilynes and digermynes with alkynes can result in the formation of the corresponding disila- (DSBs) and digermabenzenes (DGBs), wherein two carbon atoms of the benzene ring are replaced by silicon or germanium atoms. Detailed structural and spectroscopic analyses of these DSBs and DGBs have revealed that they exhibit considerable aromaticity, comparable to that of benzene. However, in contrast to the all-carbon system benzene, these DSBs and DGBs are highly reactive toward small molecules such as oxygen, hydrogen, 1,3-dienes, and water. During the investigation of their reactivity, we discovered that a 1,2-DGB works as a catalyst for the cyclotrimerization of arylalkynes, which provides access to the corresponding 1,2,4-triarylbenzenes. In this perspective article, our recent progress in the area of DSB and DGB chemistry is summarized.

Abstract
Disilene has attracted considerable interest due to the trans-bending geometry which is significantly different from the planar alkene. However, the equilibrium between disilene and isomeric silylsilylene has not been fully understood. Here, we report a density functional theory (DFT) study on this equilibrium. Calculations reveal significant effects of substituent, aromaticity and base. Specifically, the parent disilene is thermodynamically more stable than the isomeric silylene. When the methoxy substituent is introduced, the corresponding silylene becomes thermodynamically more stable, which could be rationalized by the Bent's rule. Interestingly, disilabenzene becomes thermodynamically more stable than the isomeric silylene when the concept of aromaticity is taken into account. Finally, once the base is introduced, the silylene could become thermodynamically more stable than the isomeric disilabenzene. The kinetic effect of the tautomerization with several typical substituents (F, Me and OMe) has also been investigated. Some species with a bridged form have been found to have a higher thermodynamic stability over the nonbridged ones. All these findings could be particularly useful to develop the chemistry of disilenes and silylenes.

Abstract
We report a comparative computational investigation on the first six members of linear poly-C,Si,Ge-acenes (X4n+2H2n+4, X = C,Si,Ge; n = 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). We performed density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT calculations to compare morphological, electronic, and optical properties. While C-acenes are planar, Si- and Ge-acenes assume a buckled configuration. Electronic properties show similar trends as a function of size for all families. In particular, differently from C-based compounds, in the case of both Si- and Ge-acenes, the excitation energies of the strongest low-lying electronic transition (β peaks) span the visible region of the spectrum, demonstrating their size tunability. For all families, we assessed the plasmonic character of this transition and found a linear relationship for the wavelength-dependence of the β peaks as a function of the number of rings. A similar slope of about 56 nm is observed for Si- and Ge-acenes, although the peak positions of the former are located at lower wavelengths. Outcomes of this study are compared with existing theoretical results for 2D lattices and nanoribbons, and experiments where available.

Abstract
Group 14 element heteroles are the heavier analogues of cyclopentadienes in which a heavier group 14 element atom replaces the sp3 carbon atom. In particular siloles and, to a somewhat smaller degree, germoles attracted considerable attention since the early 1990s due to their favorable photophysical properties which allowed the construction of OLEDs using group 14 element heteroles as emissive or electron-transport layers. Anions and in particular dianions derived from group 14 element heteroles have been of substantial interest due to the possible occurrence of Hückel aromaticity involving the heavier main group atom. Aromaticity is not the only notable electronic feature of silole and germole dianions; the spatial and energetic alignment of their frontier orbitals is equally remarkable. With a high lying lone pair at the heteroatom, which is orthogonal to a delocalized π-system, their frontier orbital sequence closely resembles that of N-heterocyclic carbene analogues. Despite these intriguing parallels between carbene analogues and silole and germole dianions, disappointingly little is known about their reactivity. The installation of trialkylsilyl substituents in the 2,5-positions of the heterocyclopentadiene ring as in K2[I] has a remarkable effect on the stability of silole and germole dianions and allows us to study their reactivity and to evaluate their synthetic potential in detail. Simple double salt metathesis reactions with different dihalides provided heterofulvenes. These were detected either as intermediates or, in the case of carbon dihalides, isolated in the form of their ylidic isomers II. In other cases, the heterofulvenes were the starting point for complex reaction sequences leading to novel binuclear complexes of titanium and zirconium III or for simple isomerization reactions that lead to bicyclohexene-type tetrylenes (BCH-tetrylenes) IV, a novel class of heavier carbenes. These bicyclic carbene analogues are significantly stabilized by homoconjugation between the electron deficient tetrel atom and the remote C═C double bond. Compound IV with E'R2═SiR2 and E = Si is a valence isomer of disilabenzene and is a stable derivative of the global minimum of the Si2C4H6 potential energy surface. With group 13 dihalides, as for example with boron dichlorides, topological closely related compounds V were isolated. These Ge(II) complexes of borole dianions are isolobal to half-sandwich complexes of main group elements such as aluminum(I) cyclopentadienide or can be viewed as nido-type clusters. These analogies already open a broad field for future investigations of their reactivity. Trialkylsilyl-substituted heterole dianions I provide a facile synthetic approach to several novel intriguing compound classes with the tetrel element in unusual coordination states. The reactivity and the synthetic potential of these new compounds is however widely unexplored and calls for future systematic studies. Gratifyingly, the periodic table of the elements stills holds a lot of potential for future research on the reactivity of silole and germole dianions.

Abstract
Ground state (GS) instability of nondegenerate molecules in high symmetric structures is understood through Pseudo Jahn-Teller mixing of the electronic states through the vibronic coupling. The general approach involves setting up of a Pseudo Jahn-Teller (PJT) problem wherein one or more symmetry allowed excited states couple to the GS to create vibrational instability along a normal mode. This faces two major complications namely (1) estimating the adiabatic potential energy surfaces for the excited states which are often difficult to describe in case the excited states have charge-transfer or multi-excitonic (ME) character and (2) finding out how many such excited states (all satisfying the symmetry requirements for vibronic coupling) of increasing energies need to be coupled with the GS for a particular PJT problem. An analogous alternative approach presented here for the well-known case of symmetry breaking of planar (D6h ) hexasilabenzene (Si6 H6 ) to the buckled (D3d ) structure involves identifying the second-order donor-acceptor, hyperconjugative interactions (E2 i → j ) that stabilize the distorted structure. Following the recent work of Nori-Shargh and Weinhold, one observes that the orbitals involved in the vibronic coupling between the S0 /Sn states and those for the donor (filled)-acceptor (empty) interactions are identical. In fact, deletion of any particular pair of E2 i → j interaction creates vibrational instability in the buckled structure and as a corollary, deleting it for the planar structure removes its instability. The one-to-one correlation between the natural bond orbital theory and PJT theory assists in an intuitive identification of the relevant (few) excited states from a manifold of computed ones that cause symmetry breaking by vibronic coupling. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
Small- to medium-sized clusters occur in various areas of chemistry, for example, as active species of heterogeneous catalysis or as transient intermediates during chemical vapor deposition. The manipulation of stable representatives is mostly limited to the stabilizing ligand periphery, virtually excluding the systematic variation of the property-determining cluster scaffold. We now report the deliberate expansion of a stable unsaturated silicon cluster from six to seven and finally eight vertices. The consecutive application of lithium/naphthalene as the reducing agent and decamethylsilicocene as the electrophilic source of silicon results in the expansion of the core by precisely one atom with the potential of infinite repetition.

Abstract
There are various nonplanar heteroatom analogues of benzene-cyclic 6π electron systems-and among them, hexasilabenzene (Si6 H6 ) is well known as a typical example. To determine the factors that control their planarity, quantum chemical calculations and an energy component analysis were performed. The results show that the energy components mainly controlling the planarity of benzene and hexasilabenzene are different. For hexasilabenzene, electron repulsion energy was found to be significantly important for the planarity. The application of the pseudo Jahn-Teller effect and the Carter-Goddard-Malrieu-Trinquier model for the interpretation of the planarity of the benzene analogues was also investigated. Furthermore, based on the quantitative results, it was revealed that the planarization of hexasilabenzene is realized by introducing substituents with π-accepting ability, such as the boryl group, that bring about a reduction of the π-electron repulsion on the silicon skeleton. © 2018 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.

Abstract
It is an important subject to theoretically predict the kinetic stability of transient species. In this study, we have studied the kinetic stability of hexasilabenzene Si6 H6 and its derivatives, that is, decasilanaphthalene Si10 H8 and Li-substituted hexasilabenzene Si6 Li6 , theoretically by the artificial force induced reaction (AFIR) method combined with the rate constant matrix contraction (RCMC) method. Molecular design was further conducted to extend the unimolecular lifetime of hexasilabenzene derivatives. Although both Si10 H8 and Si6 Li6 were shown to possess shorter lifetimes than Si6 H6 , we found that the lifetimes of Si6 Li6 changed depending on arrangements of Li atoms around the monocyclic Si6 backbone. Based on this knowledge, we found that a compound of an atomic composition Si6 H4 Li2 with a planar, monocyclic Si6 backbone has a relatively long unimolecular lifetime. Moreover, substitution of the two Li atoms by Na atoms further increased the lifetime.

Abstract
Propellane-like structures are an important building block for group-14 compounds. Therefore, in the present work, we study theoretically various such structures of the form E[Formula: see text] starting with the pure molecules for which E = E' = E″ = C, Si, Ge, or Sn. Subsequently, we study the systems with E ≠ E' = E″ and finally, we consider some selected cases molecules for which E, E', and E″ all are different. Special emphasis is put on identifying structural trends for the molecules with at least two different group-14 elements. The resulting scheme is, we believe, generally valid for group-14 based systems with more than one type of group-14 elements.

Abstract
Cyclopentasilane-fused hexasilabenzvalene 1 was synthesized by the reduction of tetrachlorocyclopentasilane 6 in 19% yield as a green powder. The molecular structure and properties of 1 were studied by spectroscopic and X-ray crystallographic analyses. Theoretical calculations of the model and real molecules of 1 and their structural isomers 12–16 suggest that the linkage of the central hexasilabenzvalene moiety with trisilane chains and the introduction of tert-butyl groups affect their relative energies.

Abstract
Free standing silicene nanosheets remain elusive presumably due to the instability associated with sp(2) hybridized silicon atoms. Here we show that silicon prefers nanosheets based on the non-classical Si5 unit with a [1.1.1]-propellane motif that has two inverted tetrahedral atoms bridged by three tetrahedral atoms. DFT calculations show that nanosheets constructed exclusively from propellane building blocks are consistently more stable than those with sp(2) silicon atoms or their hybrids. These nanosheets also exhibit a narrow but definite band gap, unlike those reported earlier.

Abstract
The discovery of graphene and its remarkable and exotic properties have aroused interest in other elements and molecules that form 2D atomic layers, such as metal chalcogenides, transition metal oxides, boron nitride, silicon, and germanium. Silicene and germanene, the Si and Ge counterparts of graphene, have interesting fundamental physical properties with potential applications in technology. For example, researchers expect that silicene will be relatively easy to incorporate within existing silicon-based electronics. In this Account, we summarize the challenges and progress in the field of silicene research. Theoretical calculations have predicted that silicene possesses graphene-like properties such as massless Dirac fermions that carry charge and the quantum spin Hall effect. Researchers are actively exploring the physical and chemical properties of silicene and tailoring it for wide variety of applications. The symmetric buckling in each of the six-membered rings of silicene differentiates it from graphene and imparts a variety of interesting properties with potential technological applications. The pseudo-Jahn-Teller (PJT) distortion breaks the symmetry and leads to the buckling in silicenes. In graphene, the two sublattice structures are equivalent, which does not allow for the opening of the band gap by an external electric field. However, in silicene where the neighboring Si atoms are displaced alternatively perpendicular to the plane, the intrinsic buckling permits a band gap opening in silicene in the presence of external electric field. Silicene's stronger spin orbit coupling than graphene has far reaching applications in spintronic devices. Because silicon prefers sp(3) hybridization over sp(2), hydrogenation is much easier in silicene. The hydrogenation of silicene to form silicane opens the band gap and increases the puckering angle. Lithiation can suppress the pseudo-Jahn-Teller distortion in silicene and hence can flatten silicene's structure while opening the band gap. So far, chemists have not successfully synthesized and characterized a free-standing silicene. But recently chemists have successfully produced silicene sheets and nanoribbons over various substrates such as silver, diboride thin films, and iridium. The supporting substrate critically controls the electronic properties of silicene, and the match of the appropriate support and its use is critical in applications of silicene.
