Influence of Backbone Rigidness on Single Chain Conformation of Thiophene-Based Conjugated Polymers

Stretchable Semiconducting Polymers with Hydrogen-Bonding-Capable Conjugation Breakers: Synthesis and Application in Organic Thin-Film Transistors

Diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP)-based conjugated copolymers are important organic semiconductors for applications in high-efficiency organic thin-film transistors (OTFTs). However, the direct application of these polymers with rigid backbones in stretchable devices has limitations. In this study, we designed and synthesized three kinds of DPPBT-based copolymers, DPPBT-A1, DPPBT-A3, and DPPBT-A5, which have amide-coupled alkylene conjugation breakers capable of hydrogen bonding. Linkers with different segment lengths were copolymerized with DPP and bithiophene (BT) backbone units. A DPP-based copolymer with alternating BT moieties, DPPBT, was synthesized as a reference fully conjugated copolymer. The synthesized polymers with freely rotational backbone linkers have sufficient flexibility to develop ordered phase domains, even in thin films, in comparison to the reference copolymer. However, the introduction of the conjugation breakers, which disconnect the intramolecular π-π overlapping, tends to decrease the hole mobility (μ) from 0.76 to 0.20 cm2 V-1 s-1 in the corresponding OTFT devices. The TFT fabricated using DPPBT-A3 showed a mobility of 0.50 cm2 V-1 s-1, and the mobility value did not show a significant change even when elongated by more than 50%. Therefore, the molecular design strategy of introducing amide-coupled alkylene conjugation breakers into conjugated polymer chains can contribute significantly to the development of high-mobility stretchable conjugated polymers in future.

Aggregation and Solubility of a Model Conjugated Donor-Acceptor Polymer

In conjugated polymers, solution-phase structure and aggregation exert a strong influence on device morphology and performance, making understanding solubility crucial for rational design. Using atomistic molecular dynamics (MD) and free-energy sampling algorithms, we examine the aggregation and solubility of the polymer PTB7, studying how side-chain structure can be modified to control aggregation. We demonstrate that free-energy sampling can be used to effectively screen polymer solubility in a variety of solvents but that solubility parameters derived from MD are not predictive. We then study the aggregation of variants of PTB7 including those with linear (octyl), branched (2-ethylhexyl), and cleaved (methyl) side chains, in a selection of explicit solvents and additives. Energetic analysis demonstrates that while side chains do disrupt polymer backbone stacking, solvent exclusion is a critical factor controlling polymer solubility.

Effects of molecular architecture on morphology and photophysics in conjugated polymers: from single molecules to bulk

A definitive comprehension of morphology and photophysics in conjugated polymers at multiple length scales demands both single molecule spectroscopy and well-controlled molecular architectures.

Conjugated polymers (CPs) possess a wide range of desirable properties, including accessible energetic bandgaps, synthetic versatility, and mechanical flexibility, which make them attractive for flexible and wearable optoelectronic devices. An accurate and comprehensive understanding about the morphology–photophysics relations in CPs lays the groundwork for their development in these applications. However, due to the complex roles of chemical structure, side-chains, backbone, and intramolecular interactions, CPs can exhibit heterogeneity in both their morphology and optoelectronic properties even at the single chain level. This molecular level heterogeneity together with complicated intermolecular interactions found in bulk CP materials severely obscures the deterministic information about the morphology and photophysics at different hierarchy levels. To counter this complexity and offer a clearer picture for the properties of CP materials, we highlight the approach of probing material systems with specific structural features via single molecule/aggregate spectroscopy (SMS). This review article covers recent advances achieved through such an approach regarding the important morphological and photophysical properties of CPs. After a brief review of the typical characteristics of CPs, we present detailed discussions of structurally well-defined model systems of CPs, from manipulated backbones and side-chains, up to nano-aggregates, studied with SMS to offer deterministic relations between morphology and photophysics from single chains building up to bulk states.

Impact of backbone fluorination on nanoscale morphology and excitonic coupling in polythiophenes

Fluorination represents an important strategy in developing high-performance conjugated polymers for photovoltaic applications. Here, we use regioregular poly(3-ethylhexylthiophene) (P3EHT) and poly(3-ethylhexyl-4-fluorothiophene) (F-P3EHT) as simplified model materials, using single-molecule/aggregate spectroscopy and molecular dynamic simulations, to elucidate the impacts of backbone fluorination on morphology and excitonic coupling on the molecular scale. Despite its high regioregularity, regioregular P3EHT exhibits a rather broad distribution in polymer chain conformation due to the strong steric hindrance of bulky ethylhexyl side chains. This conformational variability results in disordered interchain morphology even between a few chains, prohibiting long-range effective interchain coupling. In stark contrast, the experimental and molecular dynamic calculations reveal that backbone fluorination of F-P3EHT leads to an extended rod-like single-chain conformation and hence highly ordered interchain packing in aggregates. Surprisingly, the ordered and close interchain packing in F-P3EHT does not lead to strong excitonic coupling between the chains but rather to dominant intrachain excitonic coupling that greatly reduces the molecular energetic heterogeneity.

Chain conformations and phase behavior of conjugated polymers

Conjugated polymers may play an important role in various emerging optoelectronic applications because they combine the chemical versatility of organic molecules and the flexibility, stretchability and toughness of polymers with semiconducting properties. Nevertheless, in order to achieve the full potential of conjugated polymers, a clear description of how their structure, morphology, and macroscopic properties are interrelated is needed. We propose that the starting point for understanding conjugated polymers includes understanding chain conformations and phase behavior. Efforts to predict and measure the persistence length have significantly refined our intuition of the chain stiffness, and have led to predictions of nematic-to-isotropic transitions. Exploring mixing between conjugated polymers and small molecules or other polymers has demonstrated tremendous advancements in attaining the needed properties for various optoelectronic devices. Current efforts continue to refine our knowledge of chain conformations and phase behavior and the factors that influence these properties, thereby providing opportunities for the development of novel optoelectronic materials based on conjugated polymers.

Polymorphism of Crystalline Molecular Donors for Solution-Processed Organic Photovoltaics

Using ab initio calculations and classical molecular dynamics simulations coupled to complementary experimental characterization, four molecular semiconductors were investigated in vacuum, solution, and crystalline form. Independently, the molecules can be described as nearly isostructural, yet in crystalline form, two distinct crystal systems are observed with characteristic molecular geometries. The minor structural variations provide a platform to investigate the subtlety of simple substitutions, with particular focus on polymorphism and rotational isomerism. Resolved crystal structures offer an exact description of intermolecular ordering in the solid state. This enables evaluation of molecular binding energy in various crystallographic configurations to fully rationalize observed crystal packing on a basis of first-principle calculations of intermolecular interactions.
