Selection of Ionic Liquids for Enhancing the Gas Solubility of Volatile Organic Compounds

Computational study on organochlorine insecticides extraction using ionic liquids

Insecticides pose hazardous environmental effects and can enter the food chain and contaminate water resources. Ionic liquids (ILs) have recently drawn much interest as environmentally friendly solvents and have been an efficient choice for extracting pesticides because of their outstanding thermophysical characteristics and tunable nature. In this study, ILs were screened using COSMO-RS (Conductor-like Screening Model for Real Solvents) to extract organochlorine insecticides from water at 289 K. A total of 165 ILs, a combination of 33 cations with five anions, were screened by COSMO-RS to predict the selectivity and capacity of the organochlorine insecticides at infinite dilution. The Organochlorine insecticide compounds, such as benzene hexachloride (BHC), Heptachlor, Aldrin, Gamma-Chlordane (γ-Chlordane), Endrin, and Methoxychlor are selected for this study. Charge density profiles show that Endrin and Methoxychlor compounds are strong H-bond acceptors and weak H-bond donors, while the rest of the compounds are H-bond donors with no H-bond acceptor potential. Moreover, it has been shown that ILs composed of halides and heteroatomic anions in conjunction with cations have enhanced selectivity and capacity for insecticides. Moreover, the hydrophobic phosphonium-based ILs have enhanced selectivity and capacity for insecticides. In BHC extraction, the selectivity of 1,3-dimethyl-imidazolium chloride was found to be the highest at 1074.06, whereas 2-hydroxyethyl trimethyl ammonium chloride exhibited the highest capacity being 84.0.1,3-dimethyl-imidazolium chloride exhibits the highest performance index, which is 57064.77. In addition, the ILs that have been chosen are well-recognized as environmentally friendly and very effective solvents to extract insecticides from water. As a result, this study evaluated that ILs could be promising solvents that may be further developed for the extraction of insecticides from contaminated water.

Condensable Gases Capture with Ionic Liquids

Condensable gases are the sum of condensable and volatile steam or organic compounds, including water vapor, which are discharged into the atmosphere in gaseous form at atmospheric pressure and room temperature. Condensable toxic and harmful gases emitted from petrochemical, chemical, packaging and printing, industrial coatings, and mineral mining activities seriously pollute the atmospheric environment and endanger human health. Meanwhile, these gases are necessary chemical raw materials; therefore, developing green and efficient capture technology is significant for efficiently utilizing condensed gas resources. To overcome the problems of pollution and corrosion existing in traditional organic solvent and alkali absorption methods, ionic liquids (ILs), known as "liquid molecular sieves", have received unprecedented attention thanks to their excellent separation and regeneration performance and have gradually become green solvents used by scholars to replace traditional absorbents. This work reviews the research progress of ILs in separating condensate gas. As the basis of chemical engineering, this review first provides a detailed discussion of the origin of predictive molecular thermodynamics and its broad application in theory and industry. Afterward, this review focuses on the latest research results of ILs in the capture of several important typical condensable gases, including water vapor, aromatic VOCs (i.e., BTEX), chlorinated VOC, fluorinated refrigerant gas, low-carbon alcohols, ketones, ethers, ester vapors, etc. Using pure IL, mixed ILs, and IL + organic solvent mixtures as absorbents also briefly expanded the related reports of porous materials loaded with an IL as adsorbents. Finally, future development and research directions in this exciting field are remarked.

Functionalization of metal organic frameworks by [BMIM][CH3COO] ionic liquid for toluene capture

Indoor exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is detrimental to the health of the occupants, and their removal is crucial in maintaining good air quality. Novel adsorbents prepared by modifying Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs), MIL101 (Cr), UiO-66, and UiO-66-NH₂ with [BMIM][CH₃COO] ionic liquid, were characterized and tested for toluene adsorption. [BMIM][CH₃COO]/MIL101 performed best with a fast sorption rate, large sorption capacity, and good regenerability. It displays synergistic interactions between the IL and MOF. Adding one weight percent [BMIM][CH₃COO] to UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH₂ has a synergistic effect with respective 14% and 5% enhancements sorption over calculated values. The strong interactions between IL and UiO-66 and UiO-66-NH₂, as observed in their thermogravimetric data, results in poor toluene sorption for 10 wt% [BMIM][CH₃COO] loadings. This work provides a basis for IL modification of MOFs for enhanced sorption of VOCs for air treatment.

Absorption of Volatile Organic Compounds Toluene and Acetaldehyde in Choline Chloride-Based Deep Eutectic Solvents

Unrestricted emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs)─a threat to human health and the environment─can be controlled to a large extent by the capturing mechanism. Few recent experimental studies explored the efficacy of the deep eutectic solvent (DES), a designer solvent with some fascinating properties, as a VOC-capturing medium. Through the partition coefficient measurement, it was found that the choline chloride-based DESs exhibit excellent VOC-capturing potencies. However, a molecular picture of the above absorption process is still lacking. Here, we study the molecular mechanism of the absorption of two commonly occurring VOCs, toluene and acetaldehyde, in two different choline chloride-based DESs with varying donor molecules, urea, and levulinic acid via the molecular dynamics simulation technique. Strong absorption of the VOCs is observed in both the DESs. The free energy profile for the absorption process has been explored using the umbrella sampling method. The VOCs are preferentially solvated near the liquid/vapor interface. The simulated partition coefficients for the VOCs from the vapor to the liquid phase show good agreement with the experimental results. Detailed analyses of the spatial and orientational structure of the VOCs and different components of DESs are performed to elucidate the interaction among them. The above analyses have indicated that DES is a better VOC-capturing medium compared to a room-temperature ionic liquid, which is more extensively studied in the literature.

Design of Ionic Liquids for Fluorinated Gas Absorption: COSMO-RS Selection and Solubility Experiments

In recent years, the fight against climate change and the mitigation of the impact of fluorinated gases (F-gases) on the atmosphere is a global concern. Development of technologies that help to efficiently separate and recycle hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) at the end of the refrigeration and air conditioning equipment life is a priority. The technological development is important to stimulate the F-gas capture, specifically difluoromethane (R-32) and 1,1,1,2-tetrafluoroethane (R-134a), due to their high global warming potential. In this work, the COSMO-RS method is used to analyze the solute-solvent interactions and to determine Henry's constants of R-32 and R-134a in more than 600 ionic liquids. The three most performant ionic liquids were selected on the basis of COSMO-RS calculations, and F-gas absorption equilibrium isotherms were measured using gravimetric and volumetric methods. Experimental results are in good agreement with COSMO-RS predictions, with the ionic liquid tributyl(ethyl)phosphonium diethyl phosphate, [P₂₄₄₄][C₂C₂PO₄], being the salt presenting the highest absorption capacities in molar and mass units compared to salts previously tested. The other two ionic liquids selected, trihexyltetradecylphosphonium glycinate, [P₆₆₆₁₄][C₂NO₂], and trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium 2-cyano-pyrrole, [P₆₆₆₁₄][CNPyr], may be competitive as far as their absorption capacities are concerned. Future works will be guided on evaluating the performance of these ionic liquids at an industrial scale by means of process simulations, in order to elucidate the role in process efficiency of other relevant absorbent properties such as viscosity, molar weight, or specific heat.

Hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents as green absorbents for hydrophilic VOC elimination

As a common hydrophilic volatile organic compound (VOC), acetone is known to harm human health and the atmospheric environment. Absorption is a typical technique applied to capture hydrophilic VOCs; however, the difficulty of separating and recovering absorbed hydrophilic VOCs (e.g., acetone) from aqueous absorbents has become one of the major challenges in practical applications. Hydrophobic deep eutectic solvents (DESs) have therefore been developed as novel green absorbents for capturing hydrophilic VOCs in the present work. The compiled results show that efficient hydrophilic VOC elimination can be accomplished by the proposed hydrophobic DESs through high absorption capacity and thermodynamically favorable gas-to-liquid mass transfer. Among the explored DESs, the hydrophobic DES containing thymol [Thy] and decanoic acid [DecA] with a molar ratio of 1:1 has achieved the highest absorption capacity of acetone, i.e., 6.57 mg acetone per g DES at 20 °C and 1480 ppm acetone. The oxygen of acetone interacts favorably with the hydrogen atom of [Thy] upon absorption, rendering hydrogen bonding interaction surpassing polarity as the key factor in attaining superior solubility of acetone in DESs. Moreover, the absorbed acetone can be easily removed from Thy-based DESs, realizing an effective hydrophilic VOC elimination process with economic and ecological benefits.

Tackling Humidity with Designer Ionic Liquid-Based Gas Sensing Soft Materials

Relative humidity is simultaneously a sensing target and a contaminant in gas and volatile organic compound (VOC) sensing systems, where strategies to control humidity interference are required. An unmet challenge is the creation of gas-sensitive materials where the response to humidity is controlled by the material itself. Here, humidity effects are controlled through the design of gelatin formulations in ionic liquids without and with liquid crystals as electrical and optical sensors, respectively. In this design, the anions [DCA]^- and [Cl]^- of room temperature ionic liquids from the 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium family tailor the response to humidity and, subsequently, sensing of VOCs in dry and humid conditions. Due to the combined effect of the materials formulations and sensing mechanisms, changing the anion from [DCA]^- to the much more hygroscopic [Cl]^- , leads to stronger electrical responses and much weaker optical responses to humidity. Thus, either humidity sensors or humidity-tolerant VOC sensors that do not require sample preconditioning or signal processing to correct humidity impact are obtained. With the wide spread of 3D- and 4D-printing and intelligent devices, the monitoring and tuning of humidity in sustainable biobased materials offers excellent opportunities in e-nose sensing arrays and wearable devices compatible with operation at room conditions.

Nanoscopic study on carvone-terpene based natural deep eutectic solvents

Terpene-based natural deep eutectic solvents (NADES) formed by using carvone as the hydrogen bond acceptor and a series of organic acids including tartaric, succinic, malic, and lactic acids as hydrogen bond donors are studied using a combination of molecular simulation methods. Density functional theory was used to study small molecular clusters and the topological characterization of the intermolecular forces using the atoms-in-a-molecule approach. Close-range interactions between the optimized carvone bases eutectic solvents between carbon dioxide have been studied for potential utilization of these solvents for gas capture purposes. Furthermore, COSMO-RS calculations have been carried out for the carbon dioxide solubilization performance of NADES compounds and to obtain s-profiles to infer the polarity and H-bond forming ability of the studied solvents. On the other hand, molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to analyze the bulk liquid properties and their relationship with relevant macroscopic properties (e.g., density or thermal expansion). Last but not least, relevant toxicity properties of the studied systems were predicted and reported in this work. The reported results provide the characterization of environmentally friendly NADES and show the suitability of carvone for advanced applications as carbon dioxide solubilizers.

Highly efficient capture of odorous sulfur-based VOCs by ionic liquids

This study proposes the capture of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) and dimethyl disulfide (DMDS) from waste gas using an ionic liquid (IL), namely, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([EMIM][Tf₂N]), and examines the process from a molecular level to the laboratory scale, which is then scaled up to the industrial level. The binding energy and weak interactions between DMS/DMDS and the anion/cation in [EMIM][Tf₂N] were investigated using quantum chemistry calculations to identify the capture mechanism at the molecular scale. A thermodynamic model (UNIFAC-Lei) was established by the vapor-liquid equilibrium data of the [EMIM][Tf₂N] + DMS/DMDS systems measured at the laboratory scale. The equilibrium and continuous absorption experiments were performed, and the results demonstrated that [EMIM][Tf₂N] exhibits a highly efficient capture performance at atmospheric conditions, particularly, absorption capacities (AC) for DMS and DMDS are 189.72 and 212.94 mg g^-1, respectively, and partial coefficients (PC) as more reasonable evaluation metrics for those are 0.509 × 10^-4 and 6.977 × 10^-4 mol kg^-1 Pa^-1, respectively, at the 100 % breakthrough. Finally, a mathematical model of the strict equilibrium stage was established for process simulations, and the absorption process was conceptually designed at the industrial scale, which could provide a decision-making basis for chemical engineers and designers.

Structures and non-covalent interaction behaviours of binary systems containing the ionic liquid 1-(2'-hydroxylethyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide and chloroform

Mixtures of ionic liquids (ILs) and molecular solvents can overcome the drawbacks (high viscosity, high polarity, and high cost) of pure ILs and extend their practical use. The structural and interaction properties of ILs form the bases for understanding their properties. In this work, the structural properties of the mixtures of an IL, 1-(2'-hydroxylethyl)-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([C2OHMIM][Tf₂N]), with chloroform, a molecular solvent of weak polarity, in various concentrations were analysed using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. Excess spectra were used to analyse the infrared spectra. The IL forms a stable ion cluster-CDCl₃ complex with CDCl₃ in the concentration range investigated. In the ion cluster-CDCl₃ complex, the hydrogen atom of CDCl₃ forms hydrogen-bonds with the fluorine atoms of the anion. In addition, the chlorine atom of CDCl₃ forms a halogen-bond with the oxygen atom of the anion. All the hydrogen and halogen-bonds identified between the [C2OHMIM][Tf₂N] ion cluster and CDCl₃ exhibit low strength, closed shells, and electrostatically dominant interactions.

Design and synthesis of alverine-based ionic liquids to improve drug water solubility

Alverine [3-phenyl-N-(3-phenylpropyl)-N-ethylpropan-1-amine] is a widely known smooth muscle relaxant used to relieve cramps or spasms of the stomach and intestines.

The structure and hydrogen-bond behaviours of binary systems containing ionic liquid 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate and methanol/ethanol

Mixing ionic liquids (ILs) with a molecular cosolvent can largely reduce the high viscosities, high polarities, and high costs of ILs. The macroscopic properties of IL-cosolvent mixtures have been studied extensively. However, some fundamental questions regarding the microscopic properties of the binary mixtures still remain to be answered. In this work, the structural and hydrogen-bond features of binary systems containing 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ([BMIM][BF₄]) and methanol/ethanol were studied by using the combination of Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Excess infrared absorption spectroscopy with enhanced spectral resolution was used to analyse the original IR spectra. The alcohol tetramer/larger multimers, alcohol trimer, anion-alcohol, ion pair-alcohol, and ion cluster-alcohol complexes were identified in the excess spectra. With the increasing [BMIM][BF₄], the alcohol multimers gradually broke out from the larger multimers into smaller multimers. The hydrogen-bonded complex related with anion [BF₄]^- and alcohol gradually changes from anion-alcohol complex to ion pair-alcohol complex. The ion cluster-alcohol appears when the x(alcohol) is <0.50. The most stable optimized geometries of anion-alcohol, ion pair-alcohol, and ion cluster-alcohol were carefully analysed, and the hydrogen-bonds were identified. All of the hydrogen-bonds in these studied complexes had weak strength, closed shells and electrostatically dominant interactions.

Encapsulation of Ionic Liquids with an Aprotic Heterocyclic Anion (AHA-IL) for CO2 Capture: Preserving the Favorable Thermodynamics and Enhancing the Kinetics of Absorption

The performance of an ionic liquid with an aprotic heterocyclic anion (AHA-IL), trihexyl(tetradecyl)phosphonium 2-cyanopyrrolide ([P₆₆₆₁₄][2-CNPyr]), for CO₂ capture has been evaluated considering both the thermodynamics and the kinetics of the phenomena. Absorption gravimetric measurements of the gas-liquid equilibrium isotherms of CO₂-AHA-IL systems were carried out from 298 to 333 K and at pressures up to 15 bar, analyzing the role of both chemical and physical absorption phenomena in the overall CO₂ solubility in the AHA-IL, as has been done previously. In addition, the kinetics of the CO₂ chemical absorption process was evaluated by in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy-attenuated total reflection, following the characteristic vibrational signals of the reactants and products over the reaction time. A chemical absorption model was used to describe the time-dependent concentration of species involved in the reactive absorption, obtaining kinetic parameters (such as chemical reaction kinetic constants and diffusion coefficients) as a function of temperatures and pressures. As expected, the results demonstrate that the CO₂ absorption rate is mass-transfer-controlled because of the relatively high viscosity of AHA-IL. The AHA-IL was encapsulated in a porous carbon sphere (Encapsulated Ionic Liquid, ENIL) to improve the kinetic performance of the AHA-IL for CO₂ capture. The newly synthesized AHA-ENIL material was evaluated as a CO₂ sorbent with gravimetric absorption measurements. AHA-ENIL systems preserve the good CO₂ absorption capacity of the AHA-IL but drastically enhance the CO₂ absorption rate because of the increased gas-liquid surface contact area achieved by solvent encapsulation.

Ammonia capture from the gas phase by encapsulated ionic liquids (ENILs)

Encapsulated ionic liquids (ENILs) based on carbonaceous submicrocapsules were designed, synthesized and applied to the sorption of NH₃ from gas streams.

Solubility of CO2 in [1-n-butylthiolanium][Tf2N]+toluene mixtures: liquid-liquid phase split separation and modelling

Carbon dioxide has been shown to be an effective antisolvent gas for separating organic compounds from ionic liquids (ILs) by inducing a liquid-vapour to liquid-liquid-vapour transition. Using carbon dioxide, toluene can be separated from imidazolium, phosphonium and pyridinum cation-based ILs with the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anion, which is relatively hydrophobic and has a high toluene solubility. A new IL with relatively low viscosity is tested here for the same toluene separation process: 1-n-butylthiolanium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide. Carbon dioxide solubility in binary and ternary systems containing toluene and 1-n-butylthiolanium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide is measured at 298.15 and 313.15 K up to 7.4 MPa. Solubility behaviour in this IL is similar to imidazolium-based ILs with the same anion. However, phase split pressures are lower when 1-n-butylthiolanium bis (trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide is used instead of 1- n-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsu- lfonyl)imide at the same conditions of temperature and initial composition of toluene in the IL. Solubility data are modelled with the conductor-like screening model for real solvents combined with the Soave-Redlich-Kwong equation of state, which provides good qualitative results.

Adsorption of benzene, cyclohexane and hexane on ordered mesoporous carbon

Ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) with high specific surface area and large pore volume was synthesized and tested for use as an adsorbent for volatile organic compound (VOC) disposal. Benzene, cyclohexane and hexane were selected as typical adsorbates due to their different molecular sizes and extensive utilization in industrial processes. In spite of their structural differences, high adsorption amounts were achieved for all three adsorbates, as the pore size of OMC is large enough for the access of these VOCs. In addition, the unusual bimodal-like pore size distribution gives the adsorbates a higher diffusion rate compared with conventional adsorbents such as activated carbon and carbon molecular sieve. Kinetic analysis suggests that the adsorption barriers mainly originated from the difficulty of VOC vapor molecules entering the pore channels of adsorbents. Therefore, its superior adsorption ability toward VOCs, together with a high diffusion rate, makes the ordered mesoporous carbon a promising potential adsorbent for VOC disposal.

Extended scale for the hydrogen-bond basicity of ionic liquids

In the past decade, ionic liquids (ILs) have been the focus of intensive research regarding their use as potential and alternative solvents in many chemical applications. Targeting their effectiveness, recent investigations have attempted to establish polarity scales capable of ranking ILs according to their chemical behaviours. However, some major drawbacks have been found since polarity scales only report relative ranks because they depend on the set of probe dyes used, and they are sensitive to measurement conditions, such as purity levels of the ILs and procedures employed. Due to all these difficulties it is of crucial importance to find alternative and/or predictive methods and to evaluate them as a priori approaches capable of providing the chemical properties of ILs. Furthermore, the large number of ILs available makes their experimental characterization, usually achieved by a trial and error methodology, burdensome. In this context, we firstly evaluated COSMO-RS, COnductor-like Screening MOdel for Real Solvents, as an alternative tool to estimate the hydrogen-bond basicity of ILs. After demonstrating a straight-line correlation between the experimental hydrogen-bond basicity values and the COSMO-RS hydrogen-bonding energies in equimolar cation-anion pairs, an extended scale for the hydrogen-bond accepting ability of IL anions is proposed here. This new ranking of the ILs' chemical properties opens the possibility to pre-screen appropriate ILs (even those not yet synthesized) for a given task or application.
