Coupling of platinated triguanides with platinum-activated nitriles as a novel strategy for generation of dimetallic systems

One of two Pt(IV)-activated propanenitriles in trans-[PtCl4(EtCN)2] is involved in platinum(IV)-mediated nitrile-imine coupling with the platinum(II)-based metallacycles [PtCl2{NH=C(NR2)N(Ph)C(=NH)N(Ph)C(NR2)=NH}] [R2 = Me2 (1a), C5H10 (1b)] yielding diplatinum products, whose structures depend on molar ratios between the reactants. At a 1 : 1 ratio, the mixed-valence platinum(II)/platinum(IV) species [PtCl4{NH=C(NR2)N(Ph)C{=[(N(Et)C=NH)PtCl2(EtCN)]}N(Ph)C(NR2)=NH}] [R2 = Me2 (2a), (CH2)5 (2b)] were generated, whereas at a 1 : 2 ratio the dinuclear platinum(II)/platinum(II) complexes [PtCl2{NH=C(NR2)N(Ph)C{=[(N(Et)C=NH)PtCl2(EtCN)]}N(Ph)C(NR2)=NH}] [R2 = Me2 (3a), (CH2)5 (3b)] were obtained. In contrast to the nitrile-imine coupling observed for the platinum(IV) dinitrile complex, the reaction between the platinum(II) congener trans-[PtCl2(EtCN)2] and any one of 1a,b gives exclusively the substituted dimetallic platinum(II)/platinum(II) products [PtCl2{NH=C(NR2)N(Ph)C{=[(NH)PtCl2(EtCN)]}N(Ph)C(NR2)=NH}] [R2 = Me2 (6a), (CH2)5 (6b)] featuring platinum-containing guanidine 1 as one of the ligands. Complexes 2a,b, 3a,b, and 6a,b were characterized by elemental analyses (C, H, N), HRESI-MS, IR, (1)H NMR spectroscopy, and DTA/TG. The molecular and crystal structure of 2a·2CDCl3 was additionally studied by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Complexes 2a,b undergo further redox transformation in solutions, and single crystals of [PtCl2{NH=C(NMe2)N(Ph)C{=[(N(Et)C=NH)PtCl2(MeCN)]}N(Ph)C(NMe2)=NH}]·2CH2Cl2 (3'a·2CH2Cl2) were obtained from 2a in a CH2Cl2-MeCN-C2H4Cl2 mixture and studied by X-ray crystallography. The driving forces for the generation of diplatinum products 2 and 3 were elucidated based on a quantum-chemical study.

Design of co-crystals/salts of some Nitrogenous bases and some derivatives of thiophene carboxylic acids through a combination of hydrogen and halogen bonds

Background

The utility of N-heterocyclic bases to obtain molecular complexes with carboxylic acids is well studied. Depending on the solid state interaction between the N-heterocyclic base and a carboxylic acid a variety of neutral or ionic synthons are observed. Meanwhile, pyridines and pyrimidines have been frequently chosen in the area of crystal engineering for their multipurpose functionality. HT (hetero trimers) and LHT (linear heterotetramers) are the well known synthons that are formed in the presence of pyrimidines and carboxylic acids.

Results

Fourteen crystals involving various substituted thiophene carboxylic acid derivatives and nitrogenous bases were prepared and characterized by using single crystal X-ray diffraction. The 14 crystals can further be divided into two groups [1a-7a], [8b-14b] based on the nature of the nitrogenous base. Carboxylic acid to pyridine proton transfer has occurred in 3 compounds of each group. In addition to the commonly occurring hydrogen bond based pyridine/carboxylic acid and pyrimidine/carboxylic acid synthons which is the reason for assembly of primary motifs, various other interactions like Cl…Cl, Cl…O, C–H…Cl, C-H…S add additional support in organizing these supermolecules into extended architectures. It is also interesting to note that in all the compounds π-π stacking occurs between the pyrimidine-pyrimidine or pyridine-pyridine or acid-acid moieties rather than acid-pyrimidine/pyridine.

Conclusions

In all the compounds (1a-14b) either neutral O–H…N_{pyridyl/pyrimidine} or charge-assisted N_pyridinium-H…O_carboxylate hydrogen bonds are present. The HT (hetero trimers) and LHT (linear heterotetramers) are dominant in the crystal structures of the adducts containing N-heterocyclic bases with two proton acceptors (1a-7a). Similar type supramolecular ladders are observed in 5TPC44BIPY (8b), TPC44BIPY (9b), TPC44TMBP (11b). Among the seven compounds [8b-14b] the extended ligands are linear in all except for the TMBP (10b, 11b, 12b). The structure of each compound depends on the dihedral angle between the carboxyl group and the nitrogenous base. All these compounds indicate three main synthons that regularly occur, namely linear heterodimer (HD), heterotrimer (HT) and heterotetramer (LHT).

Control of active semiconducting layer packing in organic thin film transistors through synthetic tailoring of dielectric materials

The influence of dielectric material's property on the solid state structure packing of active semiconducting layer in OTFTs has been carefully studied by employing a whole new family of dielectric materials based on the rigid, tetrahedral bulky moleculei.e.adamantane, a smallest cage structure of diamond.

Cl···Cl interactions in molecular crystals: insights from the theoretical charge density analysis

The structure, IR harmonic frequencies and intensities of normal vibrations of 20 molecular crystals with the X-Cl···Cl-X contacts of different types, where X = C, Cl, and F and the Cl···Cl distance varying from ~3.0 to ~4.0 Å, are computed using the solid-state DFT method. The obtained crystalline wave functions have been further used to define and describe quantitatively the Cl···Cl interactions via the electron-density features at the Cl···Cl bond critical points. We found that the electron-density at the bond critical point is almost independent of the particular type of the contact or hybridization of the ipso carbon atom. The energy of Cl···Cl interactions, E(int), is evaluated from the linking E(int) and local electronic kinetic energy density at the Cl···Cl bond critical points. E(int) varies from 2 to 12 kJ/mol. The applicability of the geometrical criterion for the detection of the Cl···Cl interactions in crystals with two or more intermolecular Cl···Cl contacts for the unique chlorine atom is not straightforward. The detection of these interactions in such crystals may be done by the quantum-topological analysis of the periodic electron density.
