Ultrafast long-distance excitation energy transport in donor-bridge-acceptor systems

Ultrafast Excited-State Nonadiabatic Dynamics in Pt(II) Donor-Bridge-Acceptor Assemblies: A Quantum Approach for Optical Control

The ultrafast nonadiabatic excited state dynamics of (PTZ-N-benzyl-acetylide) (trans-bis-trimethylphosphine) Pt(II) (acetylide-NDI-bis-methyl) 1, representative of a series of Pt(II) donor-bridge-acceptor assemblies experimentally studied by the Weinstein group, University of Sheffield, is investigated by means of wavepacket propagations based on the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) method. On the basis of electronic structure data obtained at the time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) level, the subpicosecond decay is simulated by solving an 11 electronic states multimode problem, up to 18 vibrational normal modes, including both spin-orbit coupling (SOC) and vibronic coupling. A careful analysis of the results, within the diabatic representation, provides the key features of the spin-vibronic mechanism at work in this complex, distinguishing between the spin-orbit and vibronically activated ultrafast processes within the excited states manifold. The knowledge of the key active normal modes that promote selectively the population of specific electronic excited states opens a route toward optical control by selectively exciting these modes in order to drive the associated nonadiabatic processes. Relevant simulations, over 2 ps, are proposed to assess the impact of these selective vibrational excitations on the branching ratio between the primary photoproducts, namely, bridge-acceptor charge-transfer (CT) and donor-acceptor charge-separated (CS) electronic states. Whereas the excitation of the localized acetylide bridge C≡C bond stretching does not modify drastically the population of the low-lying electronic states within the first two ps, vibrational excitation of the out-of-plane twisting motion of the N-benzyl group linked to the donor entity favors the population of the 1,3CS states at the expense of the lowest 1,3CT states. This quantum study opens the route to IR optical control experiments based on the specific alteration of vibrational normal modes that activate vibronic couplings between key electronic excited states. However, the presence of critical crossings along the PES channels associated with these normal modes and the role of concurrent SOC driven ultrafast transfers of population should not be underestimated.

Molecular torsion controls the excited state relaxation pathways of multibranched tetraphenylpyrazines: effect of substitution of morpholine vs. phenoxazine

Multibranched donor-acceptor derivatives exhibiting desirable photophysical properties are efficiently used in optoelectronic devices, in which the excited state relaxation dynamics of the derivatives control the efficiency of the devices. Here, the effect of intramolecular torsion on the excited state relaxation dynamics of tetraphenylpyrazine (TPP) derivatives in non-polar (toluene) and polar (THF) solvents is investigated by substituting the electron donor of morpholine (TPP-4MOP) and phenoxazine (TPP-4PHO) leading to the planar and twisted configurations, respectively, using femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. In the steady state, TPP-4MOP showed feeble emission (ΦF ∼0.03) due to the weak donor by the delocalization of electron density supported by theoretical optimization. The TPP-4PHO exhibited strong emission (ΦF ∼0.18) in toluene compared to that in THF, in which it showed a large Stokes shift (∼9691 cm-1) with low fluorescence quantum yield (ΦF ∼0.01). The observation of large Stokes shifts, inherent nature and theoretical calculations of TPP-4PHO suggest the twisting of the dihedral angle between tetraphenylpyrazine and phenoxazine in the excited state leading to the twisted intramolecular charge transfer state (TICT). The femtosecond and nanosecond transient absorption and picosecond time-resolved emission spectra of TPP-4PHO revealed the signature of the existence of both the partial TICT and TICT states in THF leading to the triplet state. Whereas in the case of TPP-4MOP, the transient absorption spectra showed the formation of the triplet state from the local excited state without the involvement of the TICT state. Aggregation studies of TPP-4PHO in a THF and water mixture reflect the elimination of the TICT state by the restriction of intramolecular torsion in the aggregates leading to an increase of 12-fold of the fluorescence intensity along with shifting of the maximum towards the blue region. These studies revealed that the excited state relaxation pathways of the derivatives are controlled by polarity-dependent torsional motion.

Directional Exciton Migration in Benzoimidazole-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks

Highly luminescent metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have recently received great attention due to their potential applications as sensors and light-emitting devices. In these MOFs, the highly ordered fluorescent organic linkers positioning prevents excited-state self-quenching and rotational motion, enhancing their light-harvesting properties. Here, the exciton migration between the organic linkers with the same chemical structure but different protonation degrees in Zr-based MOFs was explored and deciphered using ultrafast laser spectroscopy and density functional theory calculations. First, we clearly demonstrate how hydrogen-bonding interactions between free linkers and solvents affect the twisting changes, internal conversion processes, and luminescent behavior of a benzoimidazole-based linker. Second, we provide clear evidence of an ultrafast energy transfer between well-aligned adjacent linkers with different protonation states inside the MOF. These findings provide a new fundamental photophysical insight into the exciton migration dynamics between linkers with different protonation states coexisting at different locations in MOFs and serve as a benchmark for improving light-harvesting MOF architectures.

Dynamics of Photoinduced Energy Transfer in Fully and Partially Conjugated Polymers Bearing π-Extended Donor and Acceptor Monomers

The photophysical properties of donor (D)-acceptor (A) polymers were studied by designing two types of polymers, (D-σ-A)_n and (D-π-A)_n, with non-conjugated alkyl (sp³) and π-conjugated (sp²) linkers using π-extended donor and acceptor monomers that exhibit planar A-D-A structures. The non-conjugated alkyl linker provides structural flexibility to the (D-σ-A)_n polymers, while the π-conjugated linker retains the rigid structure of the (D-π-A)_n polymers. Photoinduced energy transfer occurs from the large donor to acceptor units in both polymers. However, the photoinduced energy transfer dynamics are found to be dependent on the conformation of the polymers, where the difference is dictated by the types of linkers between the donor and acceptor units. In solution, intramolecular energy transfer is relatively favorable for the (D-σ-A)_n polymers with flexible linkers that allow the donor and acceptor units to be proximally located in the polymers. On the other hand, intermolecular (or interchain) energy transfer is dominant in the two polymer films because the π-extended donor and acceptor units in polymers are closely packed. The structural flexibility of the linkers between the donor and acceptor repeating units in the polymers affects the efficiency of energy transfer between the donor and acceptor units and the overall photophysical properties of the polymers.

Energy transfer and charge separation dynamics in photoexcited pyrene-bodipy molecular dyads

The photophysical properties of two pyrene-bodipy molecular dyads, composed of a phenyl-pyrene (Py-Ph) linked to the meso position of a bodipy (BD) molecule with either H-atoms (BD1) or ethyl groups (BD2) at the 2,6 positions, are investigated by stationary, nanosecond and femtosecond spectroscopy. The properties of these dyads (Py-Ph-BD1 and Py-Ph-BD2) are compared to those of their constituent chromophores in two solvents namely 1,2-dichloroethane (DCE) and acetonitrile (ACN). Stationary spectroscopy reveals a weak coupling among the subunits in both dyads. Excitation of the pyrene (Py) subunit leads to emission that is totally governed by the BD subunits in both dyads pointing to excitation energy transfer (EET) from the Py to BD chromophore. Femtosecond fluorescence and transient absorption spectroscopy reveal that EET takes place within 0.3-0.5 ps and is mostly independent of the solvent and the type of the BD subunit. The EET lifetime is in reasonable agreement with that predicted by Förster theory. After EET has taken place, Py-Ph-BD1 in DCE and Py-Ph-BD2 in both solvents decay mainly radiatively to the ground state with 3.5-5.0 ns lifetimes which are similar to those of the individual BD chromophores. However, the excited state of Py-Ph-BD1 in ACN is quenched having a lifetime of 1 ns. This points to the opening of an additional non-radiative channel of the excited state of Py-Ph-BD1 in this solvent, most probably charge separation (CS). Target analysis of the TA spectra has shown that the CS follows inverted kinetics and is substantially slower than the recombination of the charge-separated state. Occurrence of CS with Py-Ph-BD1 in ACN is also supported by energetic considerations. The above results indicate that only a small change in the structure of the BD units incorporated in the dyads significantly affects the excited state dynamics leading either to a dyad with long lifetime and high fluorescence quantum yield or to a dyad with ability to undergo CS.

Hole-transfer induced energy transfer in perylene diimide dyads with a donor–spacer–acceptor motif

Pump–probe spectroscopy, time resolved fluorescence, chemical variation and quantum chemical calculations reveal an efficient energy transfer mechanism enabled by a bright charge transfer state located on the spacer.

BLUF domain function does not require a metastable radical intermediate state

BLUF (blue light using flavin) domain proteins are an important family of blue light-sensing proteins which control a wide variety of functions in cells. The primary light-activated step in the BLUF domain is not yet established. A number of experimental and theoretical studies points to a role for photoinduced electron transfer (PET) between a highly conserved tyrosine and the flavin chromophore to form a radical intermediate state. Here we investigate the role of PET in three different BLUF proteins, using ultrafast broadband transient infrared spectroscopy. We characterize and identify infrared active marker modes for excited and ground state species and use them to record photochemical dynamics in the proteins. We also generate mutants which unambiguously show PET and, through isotope labeling of the protein and the chromophore, are able to assign modes characteristic of both flavin and protein radical states. We find that these radical intermediates are not observed in two of the three BLUF domains studied, casting doubt on the importance of the formation of a population of radical intermediates in the BLUF photocycle. Further, unnatural amino acid mutagenesis is used to replace the conserved tyrosine with fluorotyrosines, thus modifying the driving force for the proposed electron transfer reaction; the rate changes observed are also not consistent with a PET mechanism. Thus, while intermediates of PET reactions can be observed in BLUF proteins they are not correlated with photoactivity, suggesting that radical intermediates are not central to their operation. Alternative nonradical pathways including a keto-enol tautomerization induced by electronic excitation of the flavin ring are considered.

Self-organization principles in the formation of multiporphyrin complexes and "semiconductor quantum dot-porphyrin" nanoassemblies

In this paper, we review several aspects of molecular recognition (based on non-covalent binding interactions) occurring between meso-pyridyl substituted tetrapyrrole extra-ligands and chemical dimers of tetrapyrrolic macrocycles containing central Zn ions and spacers of various nature and flexibility. Experimental results obtained by us earlier are analyzed using a novel approach (based on steady-state absorption/fluorescence measurements) for the evaluation of complexation constants KC for the formation of porphyrin triads. It was found that KC values [ KC ~ (0.5 – 70) × 106 M-1] show noticeable dependence on the structural parameters of the interacting subunits as well as on the solvent nature. The same self-assembly approach has been used to attach meso-pyridyl substituted porphyrins to the surface of semiconductor CdSe / ZnS quantum dots (QD). It was comparatively found that in contrast to self-assembled porphyrin triads, the formation of "QD-porphyrin" nanoassemblies takes place in competition with surface stabilizing tri-n-octyl phosphine oxide (TOPO) ligand molecules and attached porphyrin molecules. It manifests in a temporal dynamics of QD photoluminescence caused by ligand exchange, TOPO layer reorganization, QD surface reconstruction, solvent properties. It was shown that the sensitivity of QD surface morphology to attached organic ligands (e.g. porphyrins) provides an opportunity to control the dynamics and pathways of the exciton relaxation in "QD-dye" nanoassemblies by changing the structure and electronic properties of these ligands.
