Abstract
A room temperature line list for the H215O radioactive isotopologue of the water molecule is computed using the variational nuclear-motion DVR3D program suite and an empirical high-precision potential energy function. The line list consists of rotation-vibrational energies and Einstein-A coefficients, covering a wide spectral range from 0 to 25000 cm-1 and the total angular momenta J up to 30. Estimates of air-broadening coefficients are provided. Experimentally derived energies of H216O, H217O and H218O from the literature are used to provide improved energies for important states with uncertainty estimates for the H215O. A number of the wmost promising spectroscopic ranges for the detection of H215O are proposed. The calculated absorption spectrum should be useful for the study gaseous radioactive water at IR region, determining concentration, etc.

Abstract
We extend our recent theoretical work on the bending relaxation of H2 O in collisions with H2 by including the three water modes of vibration coupled with rotation, as well as the rotation of H2 . Our full quantum close-coupling method (excluding the H2 vibration) is combined with a high-accuracy nine-dimensional potential energy surface. The collisions of para-H2 O and ortho-H2 O with the two spin modifications of H2 are considered and compared for several initial states of H2 O. The convergence of the results as a function of the size of the rotational basis set of the two colliders is discussed. In particular, near-resonant energy transfer between H2 O and H2 is found to control the vibrational relaxation process, with a dominant contribution of transitions withΔ j 2 = j 2 f - j 2 i ${{\rm{\Delta }}j_2 = j_2^f - j_2^i }$ =+ 2 , + 4 ${ + 2, + 4}$ ,j 2 i ${j_2^i }$ andj 2 f ${j_2^f }$ being respectively the H2 initial and final rotational quantum numbers. Finally, the calculated value of the H2 O bending relaxation rate coefficient at 295 K is found to be in excellent agreement with its experimental estimate.

Abstract

We introduce an efficient
quantum fully coupled computational scheme
within the multiconfiguration time-dependent Hartree (MCTDH) approach
to handle the otherwise extremely costly computations of translational–rotational–vibrational
states and energies of light-molecule endofullenes. Quantum calculations
on energy levels are reported for a water molecule inside C60 fullerene by means of such a systematic approach that includes all
nine degrees of freedom of H2O@C60 and does
not consider restrictions above them. The potential energy operator
is represented as a sum of natural potentials employing the n-mode expansion, along with the exact kinetic energy operator,
by introducing a set of Radau internal coordinates for the H2O molecule. On the basis of the present rigorous computations, various
aspects of the quantized intermolecular dynamics upon confinement
of H2O@C60 are discussed, such as the rotational
energy level splitting and the significant frequency shifts of the
encapsulated water molecule vibrations. The impact of water encapsulation
on quantum features is explored, and insights into the nature of the
underlying forces are provided, highlighting the importance of a reliable
first-principles description of the guest–host interactions.

Abstract
Mass-dependent diagonal Born-Oppenheimer corrections (DBOCs) to the ab initio electronic ground state potential energy surface for the main 16O3 isotopologue and for homogeneous isotopic substitutions 17O3 and 18O3 of the ozone molecule are reported for the first time. The system being of strongly multiconfigurational character, multireference configuration interaction wave function ansatz with different complete active spaces was used. The reliable DBOC calculations with the targeted accuracy were possible to carry out up to about half of the dissociation threshold D0. The comparison with the experimental band centers shows a significant improvement of the accuracy with respect to the best Born-Oppenheimer (BO) ab initio calculations reducing the total root-mean-squares (calculated-observed) deviations by about a factor of two. For the set of 16O3 vibrations up to five bending and four stretching quanta, the mean (calculated-observed) deviations drop down from 0.7 cm-1 (BO) to about 0.1 cm-1, with the most pronounced improvement seen for bending states and for mixed bending-stretching polyads. In the case of bending band centers directly observed under high spectral resolutions, the errors are reduced by more than an order of magnitude down to 0.02 cm-1 from the observed levels, approaching nearly experimental accuracy. A similar improvement for heavy isotopologues shows that the reported DBOC corrections almost remove the systematic BO errors in vibrational levels below D0/2, though the scatter increases towards higher energies. The possible reasons for this finding, as well as remaining issues are discussed in detail. The reported results provide an encouraging accuracy validation for the multireference methods of the ab initio theory. New sets of ab initio vibrational states can be used for improving effective spectroscopic models for analyses of the observed high-resolution spectra, particularly in the cases of accidental resonances with "dark" states requiring accurate theoretical predictions.

Abstract
Two low-energy excitations of a single water molecule are observed via inelastic electron tunneling spectroscopy, where a significant enhancement is achieved by attaching the molecule to the tip apex in a scanning tunneling microscope. Density functional theory simulations and quantum mechanical calculations of an asymmetric top are carried out to reveal the origin of both excitations. Variations in tunneling junction separation give rise to the quantum confinement effect on the quantum state of a water molecule in the tunneling junction. Our results demonstrate a potential method for measuring the dynamic behavior of a single molecule confined in a tunneling junction, where the molecule-substrate interaction can be purposely tuned.

Abstract
An experimental benchmark data base on rotational constants, vibrational properties and energy differences for weakly and more strongly hydrogen-bonded complexes and their constituents from the spectroscopic literature is assembled. It is characterized in detail and finally contracted to a more compact, discriminatory set (ENCH-51, for Experimental Non-Covalent Harmonic with 51 entries). The meeting points between theory and experiment consist of equilibrium rotational constants and harmonic frequencies and energies, which are back-corrected from experimental observables and are very easily accessible by quantum chemical calculations. The relative performance of B3LYP-D3, PBE0-D3 and M06-2X density functional theory predictions with a quadruple-zeta basis set is used to illustrate systematic errors, error compensation and selective performance for structural, vibrational and energetical observables. The current focus is on perspectives and different benchmarking methodologies, rather than on a specific theoretical method or a specific class of compounds. Extension of the data base in chemical, observable and quantum chemical method space is encouraged.

Abstract
We present a new custom-built cell for high-resolution absorption spectroscopy of hazardous gases. The use of an aluminum light-pipe enables sensitive detection due to the small tube diameter and an increased particle density in the interaction volume for a limited analyte amount in the cell, while avoiding additional surfaces such as mirrors. To demonstrate this, we have used the cell to measure tritiated water isotopologues (HTO and traces of T2O) for which spectroscopic data is scarce, due to the challenge of performing spectroscopy of these highly radio-chemical aggressive substances. For this purpose, the new cell also features the efficient inline-production of tritiated water. In this paper we present the concept of the light-pipe cell and demonstrate its performance with a high-resolution absorption spectrum of gaseous HTO generated inside of this cell.

Abstract
In this work, we report calculated vibrational energy levels of the methane molecule up to 10 300 cm-1. Two potential energy surfaces constructed in quite different coordinate systems with different analytical representations are employed in order to evaluate the uncertainty of vibrational predictions. To calculate methane energy levels, we used two independent techniques of the variational method. One method uses an exact kinetic energy operator in internal curvilinear coordinates. Another one uses an expansion of Eckart-Watson nuclear motion Hamiltonian in rectilinear normal coordinates. In the Icosad range (up to five vibrational quanta bands-below 7800 cm-1), the RMS standard deviations between calculated and observed energy levels were 0.22 cm-1 and 0.41 cm-1 for these two quite different approaches. For experimentally well-known 3v3 sub-levels, the calculation accuracy is estimated to be ∼1 cm-1. In the Triacontad range (7660-9188 cm-1), the average error of the calculation is about 0.5 cm-1. The accuracy and convergence issues for higher energy ranges are discussed.

Abstract
Fluorine containing molecules have a particularly long atmospheric lifetime and their very big estimated global warming potentials are expected to rapidly increase in the future. This work is focused on the global theoretical prediction of infrared spectra of the tetrafluoromethane molecule that is considered as a potentially powerful greenhouse gas having the largest estimated lifetime of over 50 000 years in the atmosphere. The presence of relatively low vibrational frequencies makes the Boltzmann population of the excited levels important. Consequently, the "hot bands" corresponding to transitions among excited rovibrational states contribute significantly to the CF4 opacity in the infrared even at room temperature conditions but the existing laboratory data analyses are not sufficiently complete. In this work, we construct the first accurate and complete ab initio based line lists for CF4 in the range 0-4000 cm-1, containing rovibrational bands that are the most active in absorption. An efficient basis set compression method was applied to predict more than 700 new bands and subbands via variational nuclear motion calculations. We show that already at room temperature a quasi-continuum of overlapping weak lines appears in the CF4 infrared spectra due to the increasing density of bands and transitions. In order to converge the infrared opacity at room temperature, it was necessary to include a high rotational quantum number up to J = 80 resulting in 2 billion rovibrational transitions. In order to make the cross-section simulation faster, we have partitioned our data into two parts: (a) strong & medium line lists with lower energy levels for calculation of selective absorption features that can be used at various temperatures and (b) compressed "super-line" libraries of very weak transitions contributing to the quasi-continuum modelling. Comparisons with raw previously unassigned experimental spectra showed a very good accuracy for integrated absorbance in the entire range of the reported spectra predictions. The data obtained in this work will be made available through the TheoReTS information system (http://theorets.univ-reims.fr, http://theorets.tsu.ru) that contains ab initio born line lists and provides a user-friendly graphical interface for a fast simulation of the CF4 absorption cross-sections and radiance under various temperature conditions from 80 K to 400 K.

Abstract
Highly accurate ab initio calculations of vibrational and rotational-vibrational energy levels of the HCN/HNC (hydrogen cyanide/hydrogen isocyanide) isomerising system are presented for several isotopologues. All-electron multireference configuration interaction (MRCI) electronic structure calculations were performed using basis sets up to aug-cc-pCV6Z on a grid of 1541 geometries. The ab initio energies were used to produce an analytical potential energy surface (PES) describing the two minima simultaneously. An adiabatic Born-Oppenheimer diagonal correction (BODC) correction surface as well as a relativistic correction surface were also calculated. These surfaces were used to compute vibrational and rotational-vibrational energy levels up to 25 000 cm-1 which reproduce the extensive set of experimentally known HCN/HNC levels with a root-mean-square deviation σ = 1.5 cm-1. We studied the effect of nonadiabatic effects by introducing opportune radial and angular corrections to the nuclear kinetic energy operator. Empirical determination of two nonadiabatic parameters results in observed energies up to 7000 cm-1 for four HCN isotopologues (HCN, DCN, H13CN, and HC15N) being reproduced with σ = 0.37 cm-1. The height of the isomerization barrier, the isomerization energy and the dissociation energy were computed using a number of models; our best results are 16 809.4, 5312.8, and 43 729 cm-1, respectively.

Abstract
The dynamics of fragmentation and vibration of molecular systems with a large number of coupled degrees of freedom are key aspects for understanding chemical reactivity and properties. Here we present a resonant inelastic X-ray scattering (RIXS) study to show how it is possible to break down such a complex multidimensional problem into elementary components. Local multimode nuclear wave packets created by X-ray excitation to different core-excited potential energy surfaces (PESs) will act as spatial gates to selectively probe the particular ground-state vibrational modes and, hence, the PES along these modes. We demonstrate this principle by combining ultra-high resolution RIXS measurements for gas-phase water with state-of-the-art simulations. Investigating dynamics of polyatomic molecules is difficult as their potential energy surfaces are multidimensional due to coupled degrees of freedom. Here the authors demonstrate a spatial selective gating technique to probe the different vibrational modes of water upon core-level excitation with X-rays.

Abstract
Using a purely electrostatic positron beam, the total cross section of positrons scattering from H_{2}O has been measured for the first time with a high angular discrimination (≃1°) against forward scattered projectiles. Results are presented in the energy range (10-300) eV. Significant deviations from previous measurements are found which are, if ascribed entirely to the angular acceptances of various experimental systems, in quantitative accord with ab initio theoretical predictions of the differential elastic scattering cross section.

Abstract
The quantum mechanical description of isomerization is based on bound eigenstates of the molecular potential energy surface. For the near-minimum regions there is a textbook-based relationship between the potential and eigenenergies. Here we show how the saddle point region that connects the two minima is encoded in the eigenstates of the model quartic potential and in the energy levels of the [H, C, N] potential energy surface. We model the spacing of the eigenenergies with the energy dependent classical oscillation frequency decreasing to zero at the saddle point. The eigenstates with the smallest spacing are localized at the saddle point. The analysis of the HCN ↔ HNC isomerization states shows that the eigenstates with small energy spacing relative to the effective (v1, v3, ℓ) bending potentials are highly localized in the bending coordinate at the transition state. These spectroscopically detectable states represent a chemical marker of the transition state in the eigenenergy spectrum. The method developed here provides a basis for modeling characteristic patterns in the eigenenergy spectrum of bound states.

Abstract
Laser spectroscopy in the linear regime of radiation-matter interaction is a powerful tool for measuring thermodynamic quantities in a gas at thermodynamic equilibrium. In particular, the Doppler effect can be considered a gift of nature, linking the thermal energy to an optical frequency, namely the line centre frequency of an atomic or molecular spectral line. This is the basis of a relatively new method of primary gas thermometry, known as Doppler broadening thermometry (DBT). This paper reports on the efforts that have been carried out, in the last decade, worldwide, to the end of making DBT competitive with more consolidated and accurate methodologies, such as acoustic gas thermometry and dielectric constant gas thermometry. The main requirements for low-uncertainty DBT, of both theoretical and technical nature, will be discussed, with a special focus on those related to the line shape model and to the frequency scale. A deep comparison among the different molecules that have been selected in successful DBT implementations is also reported. Finally, for the first time, to the best of my knowledge, the influence of refractive index effects is discussed.

Abstract
Atmospheric CO(2) concentrations are being closely monitored by remote sensing experiments which rely on knowing line intensities with an uncertainty of 0.5% or better. Most available laboratory measurements have uncertainties much larger than this. We report a joint experimental and theoretical study providing rotation-vibration line intensities with the required accuracy. The ab initio calculations are extendible to all atmospherically important bands of CO(2) and to its isotologues. As such, they will form the basis for detailed CO(2) spectroscopic line lists for future studies.

Abstract
Abstract
The report and results of an IUPAC Task Group (TG) formed in 2004 on “A Database of Water Transitions from Experiment and Theory” (Project No. 2004-035-1-100) are presented. Energy levels and recommended labels involving exact and approximate quantum numbers for the main isotopologues of water in the gas phase, H216O, H218O, H217O, HD16O, HD18O, HD17O, D216O, D218O, and D217O, are determined from measured transition frequencies. The transition frequencies and energy levels are validated using first-principles nuclear motion computations and the MARVEL (measured active rotational–vibrational energy levels) approach. The extensive data including lines and levels are required for analysis and synthesis of spectra, thermochemical applications, the construction of theoretical models, and the removal of spectral contamination by ubiquitous water lines. These datasets can also be used to assess where measurements are lacking for each isotopologue and to provide accurate frequencies for many yet-to-be measured transitions. The lack of high-quality frequency calibration standards in the near infrared is identified as an issue that has hindered the determination of high-accuracy energy levels at higher frequencies. The generation of spectra using the MARVEL energy levels combined with transition intensities computed using high accuracy ab initio dipole moment surfaces are discussed. A recommendation of the TG is for further work to identify a single, suitable model to represent pressure- (and temperature-) dependent line profiles more accurately than Voigt profiles.
