Surface Decoration of MgO Nanocubes with Sulfur Oxides: Experiment and Theory

Mesoporous bimetallic S-doped nanoparticles prepared via hydrothermal method for enhanced photodegradation of 4-chlorophenol

Magnesium oxides (MgO) have gained shown significant promise for a variety of applications, which can be modified by ions doping. In this study, bimetallic Ag-doped S-MgO nanoparticles were prepared by hydrothermal method and used for photocatalytic degradation of 4-chlorophenl (4-CP). EDX suggested the presence of no impurities, which mainly contained Mg, Ag, and S elements, suggesting that S and Ag were incorporated into the lattice of MgO as a result of successful doping. Estimated bandgap of Ag-doped S-MgO nanoparticles was 3.7 eV, lower than MgO (7.8 eV), but useful to improve optical characteristics and photocatalytic efficiency to degrade 4-CP up to a maximum of 99.60 ± 0.50%. The synergetic parameter during photocatalysis of 4-CP was 6.91, confirming the degradation of 4-CP. Quenching experiments proved the presence of hydroxyl radicals (•OH) and singlet dioxygen (1O2) that were critical in 4-CP degradation. The kinetics rate constant was increased by 24.8% from 0.086 ± 0.004 to 0.108 ± 0.005 min-1 by the addition of sulfate in the reaction medium. The work proposes a new synthetic method for preparing catalysts that are capable of producing in-situ •OH radicals and 1O2 to decompose the organic contaminants.

Isolated Cobalt Ions Embedded in Magnesium Oxide Nanostructures: Spectroscopic Properties and Redox Activity

Atomic dispersion of dopants and control over their defect chemistry are central goals in the development of oxide nanoparticles for functional materials with dedicated electronic, optical or magnetic properties. We produced highly dispersed oxide nanocubes with atomic distribution of cobalt ions in substitutional sites of the MgO host lattice via metal organic chemical vapor synthesis. Vacuum annealing of the nanoparticle powders up to 1173 K has no effect on the shape of the individual particles and only leads to moderate particle coarsening. Such materials processing, however, gives rise to the electronic reduction of particle surfaces, which-upon O2 admission-stabilize anionic oxygen radicals that are accessible to UV/Vis diffuse reflectance and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Multi-reference quantum chemical calculations show that the optical bands observed mainly originate from transitions into 4 A2g (4 F), 4 T1g (4 P) states with a contribution of transitions into 2 T1g , 2 T2g (2 G) states through spin-orbit coupling and gain intensity through vibrational motion of the MgO lattice or the asymmetric ion field. Related nanostructures are a promising material system for single atomic site catalysis. At the same time, it represents an extremely valuable model system for the study of interfacial electron transfer processes that are key to nanoparticle chemistry and photochemistry at room temperature, and in heterogeneous catalysis.

Impurity Segregation and Nanoparticle Reorganization of Indium Doped MgO Cubes

Metal oxide nanocomposites are non-equilibrium solids and promising precursors for functional materials. Annealing of such materials can provide control over impurity segregation and, depending on the level of consolidation, represents a versatile approach to engineer free surfaces, particle-particle interfaces and grain boundaries. Starting with indium-magnesium-oxide nanoparticle powders obtained via injection of an indium organic precursor into the magnesium combustion flame and subsequent particle quenching in argon, we investigated the stability of the trivalent In3+ ions in the host lattice of MgO nanoparticles by determining grain growth, morphology evolution and impurity segregation. The latter process is initiated by vacuum annealing at 873 K and can be tracked at 1173 K on a time scale of minutes. In the first instance the surface segregated indium wets the nanoparticle interfaces. After prolonged annealing indium evaporates and leaves the powder via the gas phase. Resulting MgO nanocubes are devoid of residual indium, regain their high morphological definition and show spectroscopic fingerprints (UV Diffuse Reflectance and Photoluminescence emission) that are characteristic of electronically unperturbed MgO cube corner and edge features. The results of this combined XRD, TEM, and spectroscopy study reveal the parameter window within which control over indium segregation is used to introduce a semiconducting metal oxide component into the intergranular region between insulating MgO nanograins.

One-Step Synthesis of Rox-DNA Functionalized CdZnTeS Quantum Dots for the Visual Detection of Hydrogen Peroxide and Blood Glucose

As the blood glucose concentration is an important clinical parameter of diabetes, the rapid and effective detection of blood glucose is very significant for monitoring and managing diabetes. Here, a facile method to prepare Rox-DNA functionalized CdZnTeS quantum dots (QDs) was developed. The Rox-DNA functionalized CdZnTeS QDs were prepared by a one-pot hydrothermal method through phosphorothioate DNA bound to QDs, which were employed as a ratiometric fluorescent probe for the rapid and sensitive detection of H₂O₂ and glucose. Compared with the traditional multistep construction of ratiometric fluorescent probes, this presented approach is simpler and more effective without chemical modification and complicated separation. The CdZnTeS QDs with green fluorescence is specifically sensitive to H₂O₂, while the red fluorescence of Rox is invariable. H₂O₂ is the product from the oxidation of glucose catalyzed by glucose oxidase (GOx). Therefore, a facile method to detect H₂O₂ and glucose with a detection limit of 0.075 μM for H₂O₂ and 0.042 μM for glucose was developed. In addition, this proposed probe has been employed for the detection of glucose in human serum with a satisfactory result. Moreover, this probe has been used for visual detection, and the health and diabetics can be distinguished by the naked eye. Meanwhile, this nanoprobe is also generalizable and can be extended to the detection of many other H₂O₂-mediated analytes.

Effect of cobalt supported on meso–macro porous hydrotalcite in Fischer–Tropsch synthesis

Porphyrin Metalation at the MgO Nanocube/Toluene Interface

Molecular insights into porphyrin adsorption on nanostructured metal oxide surfaces and associated ion exchange reactions are key to the development of functional hybrids for energy conversion, sensing, and light emission devices. Here we investigated the adsorption of tetraphenyl-porphyrin (2HTPP) from toluene solution on two types of MgO powder. We compare MgO nanocubes with an average size d < 10 nm and MgO cubes with 10 nm ≤ d ≤ 1000 nm. Using molecular spectroscopy techniques such as UV/vis transmission and diffuse reflectance (DR), photoluminescence (PL), and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier-transform (DRIFT) spectroscopy in combination with structural characterization techniques (powder X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, TEM), we identified a new room temperature metalation reaction that converts 2HTPP into magnesium tetraphenyl-porphyrin (MgTPP). Mg(2+) uptake from the MgO nanocube surfaces and the concomitant protonation of the oxide surface level off at a concentration that corresponds to roughly one monolayer equivalent adsorbed on the MgO nanocubes. Larger MgO cubes, in contrast, show suppressed exchange, and only traces of MgTPP can be detected by photoluminescence.

General Method for the Synthesis of Ultrastable Core/Shell Quantum Dots by Aluminum Doping

Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) have attracted extensive attention in various applications because of their unique optical and electronic properties. However, long-term photostability remains a challenge for their practical application. Here, we present a simple method to enhance the photostability of QDs against oxidation by doping aluminum into the shell of core/shell QDs. We demonstrate that Al in the coating shell can be oxidized to Al2O3, which can serve as a self-passivation layer on the surface of the core/shell QDs and effectively stop further photodegradation during long-term light irradiation. The prepared CdSe/CdS:Al QDs survived 24 h without significant degradation when they were subjected to intense illumination under LED light (450 nm, 0.35 W/cm(2)), whereas conventional CdSe/CdS QDs were bleached within 3 h.
