NH3 as a Strong H-Bond Donor in Singly- and Doubly-Bridged Ammonia Solvent Clusters: 2-Pyridone·(NH3)n, n = 1–3

Isomer Stability Dependence of Hydrogen-Bonded Benzoxazole Clusters on Solvent Molecules

The structures of hydrogen-bonded benzoxazole clusters with methanol and ammonia, BO-(CH₃OH)_n (n = 1-3) and BO-(NH₃)_n (n = 1, 2), in a supersonic jet have been investigated by measuring the S₁-S₀ electronic spectra and isomer-selected vibrational spectra with the aid of quantum chemical calculations. Similar to BO-(H₂O)₁, two isomers of BO-(NH₃)₁ were observed, which form two types of hydrogen bond networks starting from the CH bond at the 2-/7-position to the nitrogen atom of BO (C2HN/C7HN). The relative stability of these isomers strongly depends on solvent molecules. Natural bond orbital analysis reveals that the OH···N hydrogen bond is dominant in BO-(H₂O)₁ and that intermolecular interaction between the CH group and the nitrogen atom of ammonia, especially C2H···N, is significantly enhanced, resulting in a more stable C2HN isomer. Symmetry-adapted perturbation theory calculations indicate that the dispersion interaction between the methyl group of methanol and π electron cloud on the BO ring is responsible for the extreme stability of the C7HN of BO-(CH₃OH)₁. Furthermore, using time-dependent density functional theory calculations, the isomer tendency of the electronic transition shifts from the monomer origin is reproduced and it is proposed that the significant blue shift in C2HN is due to the shortened C2H bond length upon electronic excitation.

Hydrogen Bonding in Liquid Ammonia

The nature of hydrogen bonding in condensed ammonia phases, liquid and crystalline ammonia has been a topic of much investigation. Here, we use quantum molecular dynamics simulations to investigate hydrogen bond structure and lifetimes in two ammonia phases: liquid ammonia and crystalline ammonia-I. Unlike liquid water, which has two covalently bonded hydrogen and two hydrogen bonds per oxygen atom, each nitrogen atom in liquid ammonia is found to have only one hydrogen bond at 2.24 Å. The computed lifetime of the hydrogen bond is t ≅ 0.1 ps. In contrast to crystalline water-ice, we find that hydrogen bonding is practically nonexistent in crystalline ammonia-I.

Disentangling the Complex Vibrational Spectra of Hydrogen-Bonded Clusters of 2-Pyridone with Ab Initio Structural Search and Anharmonic Analysis

Vibrational spectra of 1:1 clusters of 2-pyridone (2PY) with water, ammonia, and other hydrogen bond-forming molecules have been measured by several experimental groups over the past two decades. Complex vibrational signatures associated with the N-H stretching fundamental at 3 μm are often observed. Several anharmonic coupling schemes have been proposed; however, the origin of these commonly seen complex features remains unclear. In this work, we present our theoretical analysis on the structure and vibrational spectra of these clusters using ab initio random search and ab initio anharmonic algorithms, respectively. Low-energy conformers were found to be hydrogen-bonded clusters and their vibrational spectra at 3 μm were simulated with ab initio anharmonic algorithms. We demonstrate that simple anharmonic mechanisms of Fermi resonance (FR), coupling between NH stretching modes, and overtone/combinations of skeleton modes of 2PY can lead to the complex vibrational signatures observed experimentally. Since this vibrational coupling scheme is inherent to the cis-amides with adjacent N-H and C═O groups when a hydrogen bond is formed with 2PY as the donor and acceptor, we believe that such a phenomenon is general to other hydrogen-bonding systems with the same functional group.

Non-conventional Hydrogen Bonding and Aromaticity: A Systematic Study on Model Nucleobases and Their Solvated Clusters

The conceptual development of aromaticity is essential to rationalize and understand the structure and behavior of aromatic heterocycles. This work addresses for the first time, the interconnection between aromaticity and sulfur/selenium centered hydrogen bonds (S/SeCHBs) involved in representative heterocycle models of canonical nucleobases (2-Pyridone; 2PY) and its sulfur (2-Thiopyridone; 2TPY) and selenium (2-Selenopyridone; 2SePY) analogs. The nucleus-independent chemical shift (NICS) and gauge induced magnetic current density (GIMIC) values suggested significant reduction of aromaticity upon replacement of exocyclic carbonyl oxygen with sulfur and selenium. However, we observed two-fold (57 %) and three-fold (80 %) enhancement in the aromaticity for 2TPY dimer, and 2SePY dimer, respectively which are connected through S/SeCHBs. Aromaticity enhancement was also noticed in 1 : 1 H-bonded complexes (heterodimers), micro hydrated clusters and for bulk hydration. It is expected that exocyclic S and Se incorporation into heterocycles without compromising aromatic loss would definitely reinforce to design new supramolecular building blocks via S/SeCH-bonded complexes.

Hydrogen bond induced enhancement of Fermi resonances in N–H⋯N hydrogen bonded complexes of anilines

Enhancement of Fermi resonance intensities due to the formation of N–H⋯N hydrogen bonding of anilines with alkyl amines is analyzed using a two-state deperturbation model.

Stepwise vs concerted excited state tautomerization of 2-hydroxypyridine: Ammonia dimer wire mediated hydrogen/proton transfer

The stepwise and concerted excited state intermolecular proton transfer (PT) and hydrogen transfer (HT) reactions in 2-hydroxypyridine-(NH3)2 complex in the gas phase under Cs symmetry constraint and without any symmetry constraints were performed using quantum chemical calculations. It shows that upon excitation, the hydrogen bonded in 2HP-(NH3)2 cluster facilitates the releasing of both hydrogen and proton transfer reactions along ammonia wire leading to the formation of the 2-pyridone tautomer. For the stepwise mechanism, it has been found that the proton and the hydrogen may transfer consecutively. These processes are distinguished from each other through charge translocation analysis and the coupling between the motion of the proton and the electron density distribution along ammonia wire. For the complex under Cs symmetry, the excited state HT occurs on the A″((1)πσ*) and A'((1)nσ*) states over two accessible energy barriers along reaction coordinates, and excited state PT proceeds mainly through the A'((1)ππ*) and A″((1)nπ*) potential energy surfaces. For the unconstrained complex, potential energy profiles show two (1)ππ*-(1)πσ* conical intersections along enol → keto reaction path indicating that proton and H atom are localized, respectively, on the first and second ammonia of the wire. Moreover, the concerted excited state PT is competitive to take place with the stepwise process, because it proceeds over low barriers of 0.14 eV and 0.11 eV with respect to the Franck-Condon excitation of enol tautomer, respectively, under Cs symmetry and without any symmetry constraints. These barriers can be probably overcome through tunneling effect.
