Evaluating Charge Transfer in Epicocconone Analogues: Toward a Targeted Design of Fluorophores

Band Alignment as the Method for Modifying Electronic Structure of Metal-Organic Frameworks

Electronic-level ordering in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is a route to modulate their electronic properties such as optical absorption, band alignment, work function, charge separation, charge carrier lifetimes, and ground- or excited-state conductivity. A systematic application of this approach requires the knowledge on how a MOF chemical composition affects its electronic structure. In this work, the fundamental principles for selecting MOF components to achieve targeted level alignment are considered. Correlations between the electronic parameters of building blocks and MOF band structure are analyzed. The factors affecting the energy position of constituents are discussed. In particular, the impact of the chemical composition of ligands, including the structure of its scaffold and side groups, on their energy positions in MOFs is addressed. Besides, the effect of the choice of reference potential and surface termination on the band alignment is investigated. The performance of several density functionals in the computation of absolute band positions is assessed. Finally, general principles for the modification of the MOF electronic structure are formulated and the routes to achieve an appropriate band alignment with carrier-transporting materials, co-catalysts, and redox reaction potentials are suggested.

Two-Photon Absorption and Cell Imaging of Fluorene-Functionalized Epicocconone Analogues

Epicocconone 1 is a natural chromophore isolated from the fungus Epicoccum nigrum that has shown applications in proteomics and fluorescent microscopy thanks to its unique pro-fluorescence properties. The modification of the skeleton of the natural product by replacing the triene side chain by a fluorenyl scaffold can noticeably increase the fluorophore's absorption coefficient. The synthesis of the analogues of the natural product has been made possible by the use of a palladium-catalyzed carbonylation reaction, allowing the construction of the β-keto-dioxinone key intermediate. Two-photon absorption cross-section measurements of the fluorenyl epicocconone analogues show a structure dependency with values ranging from 60 to 280 GM and live cell imaging show intense staining of intracellular vesicle-like structures around the nucleus.

Revisiting absorption and electronic circular dichroism spectra of cholesterol in solution: a joint experimental and theoretical study

Cholesterol is doubtless one of the most studied bio-molecules, which unfortunately features low emitting properties, precluding its in vivo study by fluorescence experiments. The design of fluorescent analogues of cholesterol is thus an appealing challenge in biochemistry, which simultaneously requires minor changes in its chemical structure (to retain main biological properties) and considerable enhancement of light emission. To this aim, the photochemical behaviour of the native molecule has to be deeply understood. In this work, we focused our attention on the electronic absorption of cholesterol in several common organic solutions, combining experimental (through ultraviolet-visible and electronic circular dichroism spectroscopy) and theoretical approaches (at the time-dependent density functional theory level) in order to solve the important discrepancies previously reported in the literature on the maximum absorption wavelengths and on the nature (Rydberg and/or π → π*) of the associated electronic transition.

Quantifying electro/nucleophilicity by partitioning the dual descriptor

Translating local electro/nucleophilicities into the language of reactive sites is an appealing theoretical challenge that could be conducive to strengthen the collaborative dialogue between experimentalists and quantum chemists. The usual schemes for such condensation, relying on atomic charges, may however lead to important information loss, due to a sometimes inappropriate averaging of the reactivity anisotropy. In this article, we present instead an approach based on the dual descriptor Δf, which aims at partitioning real space into nonoverlapping reactive domains that feature a constant Δf sign. This strategy enables not only to identify the nucleo/electrophilic regions inside a molecule but also to quantify meaningful properties (mean value, volume, electron population…). Its interest is then illustrated on two specific chemical problems: the measure of σ-holes in the context of halogen bonds, and of the electrophilicity of organic carbocations, casting the light on the versatility of this method.
