Temperature-Dependent Dynamic Response to Flash Heating of Molecular Monolayers on Metal Surfaces: Vibrational Energy Exchange

Ultrafast and Long-Lived Transient Heating of Surface Adsorbates on Plasmonic Semiconductor Nanocrystals

Plasmonic photocatalysts have demonstrated promising potential for enhancing the selectivity and efficiency of important chemical transformations. However, the relative contributions of nonphotothermal (i.e., hot carrier) and photothermal pathways remain a question of intense current debate, and the time scale and extent of surface adsorbate temperature change are still poorly understood. Using p-type Cu_2-xSe nanocrystals as a semiconductor plasmonic platform and adsorbed Rhodamine B as a surface thermometer and hot carrier acceptor, we measure directly by transient absorption spectroscopy that the adsorbate temperature rises and decays with time constants of 1.4 ± 0.4 and 471 ± 126 ps, respectively, after the excitation of Cu_2-xSe plasmon band at 800 nm. These time constants are similar to those for Cu_2-xSe lattice temperature, suggesting that fast thermal equilibrium between the adsorbates and nanocrystal lattice is the main adsorbate heating pathway. This finding provides insights into the transient heating effect on surface adsorbates and their roles in plasmonic photocatalysis.

Stochastic simulation of nonequilibrium heat conduction in extended molecular junctions

Understanding phononic heat transport processes in molecular junctions is a central issue in the developing field of nanoscale heat conduction. Here, we present a Langevin dynamics simulation framework to investigate heat transport processes in molecular junctions at and beyond the linear response regime and apply it to saturated and unsaturated linear hydrocarbon chains connecting two gold substrates. Thermal boundary conditions represented by Markovian noise and damping are filtered through several (up to four) gold layers to provide a realistic and controllable bath spectral density. Classical simulations using the full universal force field are compared with quantum calculations that use only the harmonic part of this field. The close agreement found at about room temperature between these very different calculations suggests that heat transport at such temperatures is dominated by lower frequency vibrations whose dynamics is described well by classical mechanics. The results obtained for alkanedithiol molecules connecting gold substrates agree with previous quantum calculations based on the Landauer formula and match recent experimental measurements [e.g., thermal conductance around 20 pW/K for alkanedithiols in single-molecule junctions (SMJs)]. Heat conductance simulations on polyynes of different lengths illuminate the effects of molecular conjugation on thermal transport. The difference between alkanes and polyynes is not large but correlates with the larger rigidity and stronger mode localization that characterize the polyyne structure. This computational approach has been recently used [R. Chen, I. Sharony, and A. Nitzan, J. Phys. Chem. Lett. 11, 4261-4268 (2020)] to unveil local atomic heat currents and phononic interference effect in aromatic-ring based SMJs.

Ultrafast Nanoscale Raman Thermometry Proves Heating Is Not a Primary Mechanism for Plasmon-Driven Photocatalysis

Plasmonic materials efficiently convert light to various forms of energies for many applications, including photocatalysis, photovoltaics, and photothermal therapies. In particular, plasmonic photocatalysts hold incredible promise for highly selective sunlight-driven catalysis through the generation of highly energetic holes and electrons used to drive chemical reactions. However, plasmons are also known to generate heat, and the partitioning of photoexcitation energy into hot carriers and heat on molecularly relevant time scales is not well understood, yet plays a crucial role in designing and understanding these photocatalysts. Using an ultrafast surface-enhanced Raman thermometry technique, we probe the effective temperature, equivalent to the mode-specific increase of vibrational kinetic energy, of molecules adsorbed to gold nanoparticle aggregates in the most active hot spots on the picosecond time scale of chemical reactivity. This represents the first measurement of vibrational energy deposition for coupled molecular-plasmonic systems on the picosecond time scale of molecular motion. We find that upon plasmon excitation, the adsorbates in the hot spots undergo an initial energy transfer within several picoseconds that changes the effective temperature of the system by less than 100 K, even at peak flux values 10⁸ times stronger than focused sunlight. The energy quickly dissipates from the adsorbates into the surroundings in less than 5 ps, even at the highest values of photoexcitation. This surprisingly modest energy transfer of the most active regions of the plasmonic materials on the ultrafast time scale decisively proves that most plasmonic photocatalysis is not primarily thermally driven.

Ultrafast Surface-Enhanced Raman Probing of the Role of Hot Electrons in Plasmon-Driven Chemistry

Hot electrons generated through plasmonic excitations in metal nanostructures show great promise for efficiently driving chemical reactions with light. However, the lifetime, yield, and mechanism of action of plasmon-generated hot electrons involved in a given photocatalytic process are not well understood. Here, we develop ultrafast surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) as a direct probe of plasmon-molecule interactions in the plasmon-catalyzed dimerization of 4-nitrobenzenethiol to p,p'-dimercaptoazobenzene. Ultrafast SERS probing of these molecular reporters in plasmonic hot spots reveals transient Fano resonances, which we attribute to near-field coupling of Stokes-shifted photons to hot electron-driven metal photoluminescence. Surprisingly, we find that hot spots that yield more photoluminescence are much more likely to drive the reaction, which indirectly proves that plasmon-generated hot electrons induce the photochemistry. These ultrafast SERS results provide insight into the relative reactivity of different plasmonic hot spot environments and quantify the ultrafast lifetime of hot electrons involved in plasmon-driven chemistry.
