Activation of Gas-Phase Uranyl: From an Oxo to a Nitrido Complex

Gas-phase synthesis of [OU-X]+ (X = Cl, Br and I) from a UO22+ precursor using ion-molecule reactions and an [OUCH]+ intermediate

Difficulty in the preparation of gas-phase ions that include U in middle oxidation states(III,IV) have hampered efforts to investigate intrinsic structure, bonding and reactivity of model species. Our group has used preparative tandem mass spectrometry (PTMS) to synthesize a gas-phase U-methylidyne species, [OUCH]+, by elimination of CO from [UO2(CCH)]+ [M. J. van Stipdonk, I. J. Tatosian, A. C. Iacovino, A. R. Bubas, L. Metzler, M. C. Sherman and A. Somogyi, J. Am. Soc. Mass Spectrom., 2019, 30, 796-805], which has been used as an intermediate to create products such as [OUN]+ and [OUS]+ by ion-molecule reactions. Here, we investigated the reactions of [OUCH]+ with a range of alkyl halides to determine whether the methylidyne is a also a useful intermediate for production and study of the oxy-halide ions [OUX]+, where X = Cl, Br and I, formally U(IV) species for which intrinsic reactivity data is relatively scarce. Our experiments demonstrate that [OUX]+ is the dominant product ion generated by reaction [OUCH]+ with neutral regents such as CH3Cl, CH3CH2Br and CH2CHCH2I.

Conversion of a UO22+ Precursor to UH+ and U+ Using Tandem Mass Spectrometry to Remove Both "yl" Oxo Ligands

Multiple-stage collision-induced dissociation (CID) of a uranyl propiolate cation, [UO2(O2C-C≡CH)]+, can be used to prepare the U-methylidyne species [O═U≡CH]+ [J. Am. Soc. Mass Spectrom. 2019, 30, 796-805]. Here, we report that CID of [O═U≡CH]+ causes elimination of CO to create [UH]+, followed by a loss of H• to generate U+. A feasible, multiple-step pathway for the generation of [UH]+ was identified using DFT calculations. These results provide the first demonstration that multiple-stage CID can be used to prepare both U+ and UH+ directly from a UO22+ precursor for the subsequent investigation of ion-molecule reactivity.

Resolving the π-assisted U-N σf-bond formation using quantum information theory

We model the potential energy profiles of the UO₂ (NCO)Cl₂^- → NUOCl₂^- + CO₂ reaction pathway [Y. Gong, V. Vallet, M. del Carmen Michelini, D. Rios and J. K. Gibson, J. Phys. Chem. A, 2014, 118, 325-330] using different pair coupled-cluster doubles (pCCD) methods. Specifically, we focus on pCCD and pCCD-tailored coupled cluster models in predicting relative energies for the various intermediates and transition states along the reaction coordinate. Furthermore, we augment our study on energetics with an orbital-pair correlation analysis of the complete reaction pathway that features two distinct paths. Our analysis of orbital correlations sheds new light on the formation and breaking of respective bonds between the uranium, oxygen, and nitrogen atoms along the reaction coordinates where the "yl" bond is broken and a nitrido compound formed. Specifically, the strengthening of the U-N σ_f-bond is assisted by a π-type interaction that is delocalized over the C-N-U backbone of the UO₂ (NCO)Cl₂^- complex.

Intrinsic reactivity of [OUCH]+ : Apparent synthesis of [OUS]+ by reaction with CS2

RATIONALE

Building on our report that collision-induced dissociation (CID) can be used to create the highly reactive U-alkylidyne species [O=U≡CH]⁺ , our goal was to determine whether the species could be as an intermediate for synthesis of [OUS]⁺ by reaction with carbon disulfide (CS₂ ).

METHODS

Cationic uranyl-propiolate precursor ions were generated by electrospray ionization, and multiple-stage CID in a linear trap instrument was used to prepare [O=U≡CH]⁺ . Neutral CS₂ was admitted into the trap through a modified He inlet and precision leak valves.

RESULTS

The [O=U≡CH]⁺ ion reacts with CS₂ to generate [OUS]⁺ . CID of [OUS]⁺ causes elimination of the axial sulfide ligand to generate [OU]⁺ . Using isotopically labeled reagent, we found that [OUS]⁺ reacts with O₂ to create [UO₂ ]⁺ .

CONCLUSIONS

[O=U≡CH]⁺ proves to be a useful reagent ion for synthesis of [OUS]⁺ , a species that to date has only been created by gas-phase reactions of U⁺ and U²⁺ . Dissociation of [OUS]⁺ to create [OU]⁺ , but not [US]⁺ , and the efficient conversion of the species into [UO₂ ]⁺ , is consistent with the relative differences in U-O and U-S bond energies.

Uranium trioxide, UO₃, has a T-shaped structure with bent uranyl, UO₂²⁺, coordinated by an equatorial oxo, O^2-. The structure of cation UO₃⁺ is similar but with an equatorial oxyl, O^•-. Neutral and cationic uranium trioxide coordinated by nitrates were characterized by collision induced dissociation (CID), infrared multiple-photon dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy, and density functional theory. CID of uranyl nitrate, [UO₂(NO₃)₃]^- (complex A1), eliminates NO₂ to produce nitrate-coordinated UO₃⁺, [UO₂(O^•)(NO₃)₂]^- (B1), which ejects NO₃ to yield UO₃ in [UO₂(O)(NO₃)]^- (C1). Finally, C1 associates with H₂O to afford uranyl hydroxide in [UO₂(OH)₂(NO₃)]^- (D1). IRMPD of B1, C1, and D1 confirms uranyl equatorially coordinated by nitrate(s) along with the following ligands: (B1) radical oxyl O^•-; (C1) oxo O^2-; and (D1) two hydroxyls, OH^-. As the nitrates are bidentate, the equatorial coordination is six in A1, five in B1, four in D1, and three in C1. Ligand congestion in low-coordinate C1 suggests orbital-directed bonding. Hydrolysis of the equatorial oxo in C1 epitomizes the inverse trans influence in UO₃, which is uranyl with inert axial oxos and a reactive equatorial oxo. The uranyl ν₃ IR frequencies indicate the following donor ordering: O^2-[best donor] ≫ O^•-> OH^-> NO₃^-.

Destruction and reconstruction of UO22+ using gas-phase reactions

While the strong axial U[double bond, length as m-dash]O bonds confer high stability and inertness to UO22+, it has been shown that the axial oxo ligands can be eliminated or replaced in the gas-phase using collision-induced dissociation (CID) reactions. We report here tandem mass spectrometry experiments initiated with a gas-phase complex that includes UO22+ coordinated by a 2,6-difluorobenzoate ligand. After decarboxylation to form a difluorophenide coordinated uranyl ion, [UO2(C6F2H3)]+, CID causes elimination of CO, and then CO and C2H2 in sequential dissociation steps, to leave a reactive uranium fluoride ion, [UF2(C2H)]+. Reaction of [UF2(C2H)]+ with CH3OH creates [UF2(OCH3)]+, [UF(OCH3)2]+ and [UF(OCH3)2(CH3OH)]+. Cleavage of C-O bonds within these species results in the elimination of methyl cation (CH3+). Subsequent CID steps convert [UF(OCH3)2]+ to [UO2(F)]+ and similarly, [U(OCH3)3]+ to [UO2(OCH3)]+. Our experiments show removal of both uranyl oxo ligands in "top-down" CID reactions and replacement in "bottom-up" ion-molecule and dissociation steps.

Intrinsic chemistry of [OUCH]+: reactions with H2O, CH3C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N and O2

We report the first experimental study of the intrinsic chemistry of a U-methylidyne species, focusing on reaction of [OUCH]+ with H2O, O2 and CH3C[triple bond, length as m-dash]N in the gas phase. DFT was also used to determine reaction pathways, and establish the mechanism by which [OUCH]+ is formed through collision-induced dissociation of [UO2(C[triple bond, length as m-dash]CH)]+.

A neutral sulfur-substituted uranyl complex [U(O)(S)F₂] in which the SUO²⁺ moiety is stabilized by electron withdrawing fluoride ligands was prepared via oxidation of U(0) by SOF₂ in cryogenic matrixes.

Because of the high stability and inertness of the U=O bonds, activation and/or functionalization of UO₂²⁺ and UO₂⁺ remain challenging tasks. We show here that collision-induced dissociation (CID) of the uranyl-propiolate cation, [U^VIO₂(O₂C-C≡CH)]⁺, can be used to prepare [U^VIO₂(C≡CH)]⁺ in the gas phase by decarboxylation. Remarkably, CID of [U^VIO₂(C≡CH)]⁺ caused elimination of CO to create [OU^VICH]⁺, thus providing a new example of a well-defined substitution of an "yl" oxo ligand of U^VIO₂²⁺ in a unimolecular reaction. Relative energies for candidate structures based on density functional theory calculations suggest that the [OU^VICH]⁺ ion is a uranium-methylidyne product, with a U≡C triple bond composed of one σ-bond with contributions from the U df and C sp hybrid orbitals, and two π-bonds with contributions from the U df and C p orbitals. Upon isolation, without imposed collisional activation, [OU^VICH]⁺ appears to react spontaneously with O₂ to produce [U^VO₂]⁺. Graphical Abstract .

Reductive activation of neptunyl and plutonyl oxo species with a hydroxypyridinone chelating ligand

Activation of carbon dioxide by a terminal uranium-nitrogen bond in the gas-phase: a demonstration of the principle of microscopic reversibility

Activation of CO2 is demonstrated by its spontaneous dissociative reaction with the gas-phase anion complex NUOCl2(-), which can be considered as NUO(+) coordinated by two chloride anion ligands. This reaction was previously predicted by density functional theory to occur exothermically, without barriers above the reactant energy. The present results demonstrate the validity of the prediction of microscopic reversibility, and provide a rare case of spontaneous dissociative addition of CO2 to a gas-phase complex. The activation of CO2 by NUOCl2(-) proceeds by conversion of a U[triple bond, length as m-dash]N bond to a U[double bond, length as m-dash]O bond and creation of an isocyanate ligand to yield the complex UO2(NCO)Cl2(-), in which uranyl, UO2(2+), is coordinated by one isocyanate and two chloride anion ligands. This activation of CO2 by a uranium(vi) nitride complex is distinctive from previous reports of oxidative insertion of CO2 into lower oxidation state U(iii) or U(iv) solid complexes, during which both C-O bonds remain intact. This unusual observation of spontaneous addition and activation of CO2 by NUOCl2(-) is a result of the high oxophilicity of uranium. If the computed Gibbs free energy of the reaction pathway, rather than the energy, is considered, there are barriers above the reactant asymptotes such that the observed reaction should not proceed under thermal conditions. This result provides a demonstration that energy rather than Gibbs free energy determines reactivity under low-pressure bimolecular conditions.

Reductive silylation of Cp*UO2((Mes)PDI(Me)) promoted by Lewis bases

Functionalization of the uranyl moiety (UO2(2+)) in Cp*UO2((Mes)PDI(Me)) (1-PDI) ((Mes)PDI(Me) = 2,6-((Mes)N=CMe)2C5H3N; Mes = 2,4,6-triphenylmethyl), which bears a reduced, monoanionic pyridine(diimine) ligand, is reported. Silylating reagents, R3Si-X (R = Me, X = Cl, I, OTf, SPh; R = Ph, X = Cl), effectively add across the strong O=U=O bonds in the presence of the Lewis base, OPPh3, generating products of the form (R3SiO)2UX2(OPPh3)2 (R = Me, X = I (2-OPPh3), Cl (3-OPPh3), SPh (5-OPPh3), OTf (6-OPPh3); R = Ph, X = Cl (4-OPPh3)). During this transformation, reduction to uranium(iv) occurs with loss of (Cp*)2 and (Mes)PDI(Me), each of which acts as a one-electron source. In the reaction, the Lewis base serves to activate the silyl halide, generating a more electrophilic silyl group, as determined by (29)Si NMR spectroscopy, that undergoes facile transfer to the oxo groups. Complete U-O bond scission was accomplished by treating the uranium(iv) disiloxide compounds with additional silylating reagent, forming the family (Ph3PO)2UX4. All compounds were characterized by (1)H NMR, infrared, and electronic absorption spectroscopies. X-ray crystallographic characterization was used to elucidate the structures of 2-OPPh3, 4-OPPh3, 5-OPPh3, and 6-OPPh3.
