Abstract
An oleyl alcohol-based extended surfactant, sodium oleyl polyethylene oxide-polypropylene oxide sulfate (OE3P3S), was synthesized and identified using FT-IR and 1H NMR. The adsorption and aggregation behaviors of OE3P3S and its mixture with cationic surfactant alkyltrimethylammoniumbromide (ATAB) were investigated under different molar ratios. The static surface tension analysis indicated that the critical micellization concentration (cmc) and the critical surface tension (γcmc) of OE3P3S were 0.72 mmol/L, and 36.16 mN/m, respectively. The cmc and γcmc values of the binary system were much lower than that of the individual component. And the cmc values of OE3P3S/ATAB = 6:4 mixtures decreased with an increase in the chain length of the cationic surfactant in the binary system. It was found from the dynamic surface tension that there was a slower diffusion rate in the binary system compared to the pure surfactant, and the adsorption processes for OE3P3S/ATAB = 6:4 were mixed diffusion-kinetic adsorption mechanisms. With a combination of DLS data and TEM measurements, formations of vesicles in OE3P3S/ATAB = 6:4 solutions appeared to occur at a concentration of 0.05 mmol/L. By studying the formation of liquid crystal structures in an emulsion prepared with OE3P3S as the surfactant, it was found that the oil-in-water emulsion is birefringent with a Maltese cross texture, and the rheological properties revealed its predominant viscoelastic behavior and shear thinning properties.

Abstract
The surface activities and application properties for the mixtures of cationic surfactants tetramethylene-1,4-bis[N,N-bis(hydroxypropyl)-hexa/decyloxypropylammonium] bromide (GC10-P) and tetramethylene-1,4-bis[N,N-bis(hydroxyethyl)-hexa/decyloxypropylammonium] bromide (GC10-E) and anionic surfactant isomeric sodium fatty alcohol ether sulfates (iso-AE9S) were investigated using both the tensiometry and the conductometry. The interaction parameters and thermodynamic micellization parameters of GC10-P/iso-AE9S and GC10-E/iso-AE9S mixtures were evaluated by Clint-Rubingh and Motomura theoretical models. When the mole fraction of α1 for GC10-P/iso-AE9S mixed system was 0.2, the critical micelle concentration (CMC) reached a minimum of 1.61 × 10-4 mol/L, and the minimum critical micelle concentration of the GC10-E/iso-AE9S mixed system is 2.67 × 10-5 mol/L at α1 = 0.6. The CMC value of the mixed system is 1-2 orders of magnitude lower than that of any single component. The results indicate that the synergistic effects of the investigated mixed systems (evaluated by βm) are in order of GC10-P/iso-AE9S < GC10-E/iso-AE9S, with maximum βm values of -17.98 and -9.78, respectively. The change in zeta potential indicates that the poly(ethylene oxide) chain has weakened the charge density of the hydrophilic headgroup of the anionic surfactant. The interfacial tension at the oil-water interface in the mixed system of anionic/cationic surfactants is lower than that of any single component, exhibiting a higher interfacial activity. The mixed system exhibits a decreased contact angle and superior wetting ability over any single component, and it also enhances foam performance, emulsification performance, and degreasing performance.

Abstract
Low-molecular weight gelators (LMWGs) are small molecules (Mw < ∼1 kDa), which form self-assembled fibrillar network (SAFiN) hydrogels in water when triggered by an external stimulus. A great majority of SAFiN gels involve an entangled network of self-assembled fibers, in analogy to a polymer in a good solvent. In some rare cases, a combination of attractive van der Waals and repulsive electrostatic forces drives the formation of bundles with a suprafibrillar hexagonal order. In this work, an unexpected micelle-to-fiber transition is triggered by Ca2+ or Ag+ ions added to a micellar solution of a novel glycolipid surfactant, whereas salt-induced fibrillation is not common for surfactants. The resulting SAFiN, which forms a hydrogel above 0.5 wt%, has a "nano-fishnet" structure, characterized by a fibrous network of both entangled fibers and β-sheet-like rafts, generally observed for silk fibroin, actin hydrogels or mineral imogolite nanotubes, but not known for SAFiNs. The β-sheet-like raft domains are characterized by a combination of cryo-TEM and SAXS and seem to contribute to the stability of glycolipid gels. Furthermore, glycolipid is obtained by fermentation from natural resources (glucose, rapeseed oil), thus showing that naturally engineered compounds can have unprecedented properties, when compared to the wide range of chemically derived amphiphiles.

Abstract
The scientific community has shown a great deal of interest in sodium lauroyl glycine (SLG) and sodium lauroyl lactylate (SLL), two sustainable and eco-friendly substances that are considered as potential bio-friendly alternatives for petrochemical-based amphiphiles. In the present work, the formation of mixed micelle for SLG and SLL surfactant in water was investigated. Meanwhile, the surface interaction and thermodynamic parameters were calculated according to the surface tension curves. The results indicated that at certain ratios, SLG/SLL surfactant mixtures had synergistic effects that could yield higher surface activity and improve application performance. When the mole fraction of SLL (αSLL) was 0.4, γcmc achieved a minimum of 22.6 mN m-1 and displayed the best foaming properties. The mixed solution exhibited the best wetting ability when αSLL was 0.6. While αSLL was 0.8, the mixed solution showed the optimum dynamic adsorption properties. And it was found that the antibacterial property of SLG and SLL could be partially preserved after compounding. These results demonstrated for the first time that the mixed environmentally friendly surfactant SLG and SLL has a promising prospect for use in the personal care, detergent, and cosmetic industries.

Abstract
Biological amphiphiles are molecules with a rich phase behavior. Micellar, vesicular, and even fibrillar phases can be found for the same molecule by applying a change in pH or by selecting the appropriate metal ion. The rich phase behavior paves the way toward a broad class of soft materials, from carriers to hydrogels. The present work contributes to understanding the fibrillation of a microbial glycolipid, glucolipid G-C18:1, produced by Starmerella bombicola ΔugtB1 and characterized by a micellar phase at alkaline pH and a vesicular phase at acidic pH. Fibrillation and prompt hydrogelation is triggered by adding either alkaline earth, Ca2+, or transition metal, Ag+, Fe2+, Al3+, ions to a G-C18:1 micellar solution. A specifically designed apparatus coupled to a synchrotron SAXS beamline allows the performing of simultaneous cation- and pH-resolved in situ monitoring of the morphological evolution from spheroidal micelles to crystalline fibers, when Ca2+ is employed, or to wormlike aggregates, when Fe2+ or Al3+ solutions are employed. The fast reactivity of Ag+ and the crystallinity of Ca2+-induced fibers suggest that fibrillation is driven by direct metal-ligand interactions, while the shape transition from spheroidal to elongated micelles with Fe2+ or Al3+ rather suggest charge screening between the lipid and the hydroxylated cation species.

Abstract
Inspired by the unusual shapes of the titration curve observed for many surfactants and mixed colloidal systems, we decided to extend the analysis to isothermal titration calorimetric curves (ITC) by paying special attention to potential structural changes in micellar aggregates. In this paper, we used isothermal titration calorimetry in conjunction with Scanning Transmission Electron Microscopy (STEM), Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) and X-ray Scattering (SAXS) methods support by Monte Carlo and semiempirical quantum chemistry simulations to confirm if the isothermal calorimetric curve shape can reflect micelle transition phenomena. For that purpose, we analysed, from the thermodynamic point of view, a group of cationic gemini surfactants, alkanediyl-α,ω-bis(dimethylalkylammonium) bromides. We proposed the shape of aggregates created by surfactant molecules in aqueous solutions and changes thereof within a wide temperature range. The results provide evidence for the reorganization processes and the relationship (dependence) between the morphology of the created aggregates and the conditions such as temperature, surfactant concentration and spacer chain length which affect the processes.

Abstract
Short cationic antimicrobial lipopeptides with surfactant-like structure are promising antibiotic candidates that preferentially target microbial membranes. Therefore, we focused our study on double-chain lipopeptides, (C10-16)2Dab-KKK-NH2 and (C10-16)2Dap-KKK-NH2, where Dab and Dap are 2,4-diaminobutyric and 2,3-diaminopropionic acids, respectively. We tried to answer a question how the self-assembly behaviour affects biological activities of the tested compounds. The subject compounds were synthesized by solid-phase method and screened for their antimicrobial and haemolytic activities. Cytotoxicity tests on human keratinocytes were carried out for the most promising lipopeptides. Self-assembly properties were evaluated by both experimental and theoretical methods. Interactions with membrane models were examined using the ITC and FTIR techniques. All the lipopeptides studied showed the tendency to self-assembly in solution, and this behaviour was affected by the length of the hydrocarbon chains. Acyl chain elongation supported the formation of the bilayer structure and deprived the lipopeptides of antimicrobial activity. A multi-step mechanism of interaction with a negatively charged membrane was observed for the short-chain lipopeptides, indicating other processes accompanying the binding process. Short-chain lipopeptides were able to penetrate into the liposome's interior and/or cause the rupture of the liposome, this being compatible with their high antimicrobial activity.

Abstract
The systematic investigation of the aggregation behaviours of newly synthesised surface-active ionic liquids 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(2-ethylhexyl)sulfosuccinate ([Cnmim][AOT], n = 2, 3, 5, 6, 7) by various techniques is reported. The critical aggregation concentrations (CACs) and the standard Gibbs free energies of aggregation () were determined from measurements on conductivity, fluorescence, and surface tension, which suggested a stronger self-assembly ability in the bulk solution for [Cnmim][AOT] surfactants with longer alkyl chain cations. An interesting structure transition driven by the penetration of the imidazolium cation into the aggregate when n > 4 was found by analysis of the variations of the values of CAC, , the degree of counter ion binding (β), and the micropolarity (I1/I3) immediately after the CAC with changing alkyl chain length of the imidazolium cation, which was further confirmed by 1H NMR measurements.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) is a general technique that allows for precise and highly sensitive measurements. These measurements may provide a complete and accurate thermodynamic description of association processes in complex systems such as colloidal mixtures. SCOPE OF THE REVIEW This review will address uses of ITC for studies of surfactant aggregation to form micelles, with emphasis on the thermodynamic studies of homologous surfactant series. We will also review studies on surfactant association with polymers of different molecular characteristics and with colloidal particles. GENERAL SIGNIFICANCE ITC studies on the association of different homologous series of surfactants provide quantitative information on independent contribution from their apolar hydrocarbon chains and polar headgroups to the different thermodynamic functions associated with micellization (Gibbs energy, enthalpy and entropy). Studies on surfactant association to polymers by ITC provide a comprehensive description of the association process, including examples in which particular features revealed by ITC were elucidated by using ancillary techniques such as light or X-ray scattering measurements. Examples of uses of ITC to follow surfactant association to biomolecules such as proteins or DNA, or nanoparticles are also highlighted. Finally, recent theoretical models that were proposed to analyze ITC data in terms of binding/association processes are discussed. MAJOR CONCLUSIONS This review stresses the importance of using direct calorimetric measurements to obtain and report accurate thermodynamic data, even in complex systems. These data, whenever possible, should be confirmed and associated with other ancillary techniques that allow elucidation of the nature of the transformations detected by calorimetric results, providing a complete description of the process under scrutiny.
