Effects of Alkyl Chain Length and Solvents on Thermodynamic Dissociation Constants of the Ionic Liquids with One Carboxyl Group in the Alkyl Chain of Imidazolium Cations

Synthesis of a novel carboxybetaine copolymer with different spacer lengths and inhibition of nonspecific protein adsorption on its polymer film

Herein, we designed and synthesized a thermally stable carboxybetaine copolymer with a one- or three-carbon spacer between ammonium and carboxylate groups (CBMA1 and CBMA3) to create an anti-nonspecific adsorption surface with the ability to immobilize antibodies. A series of controlled poly(N,N-dimethylaminoethyl methacrylate) was successfully prepared using reversible addition-fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization and was derived to carboxybetaine copolymers of poly(CBMA1-co-CBMA3) [P(CBMA1/CBMA3)] with various CBMA1 contents, including the homopolymers of CBMA1 and CBMA3. Thermal stability of the carboxybetaine (co)polymers was higher than that of the carboxybetaine polymer with a two-carbon spacer (PCBMA2). Further, we also evaluated nonspecific protein adsorption in fetal bovine serum and antibody immobilization on the substrate coated with P(CBMA1/CBMA3) copolymers using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) analysis. As the CBMA1 content increased, nonspecific protein adsorption on the P(CBMA1/CBMA3) copolymer surface decreased. Similarly, the immobilization amount of the antibody decreased as the CBMA1 content increased. However, the figure of merit (FOM), defined as the ratio of the amount of antibody immobilization to that of nonspecific protein adsorption, depended on the CBMA3 content; FOM was higher when the CBMA3 content was 20-40% than those of CBMA1 and CBMA3 homopolymers. These findings will help enhance the sensitivity of the analysis using molecular interaction measurement devices, such as SPR and quartz crystal microbalance.

Physicochemical Properties of Various 2-Hydroxyethylammonium Sulfonate -Based Protic Ionic Liquids and Their Potential Application in Hydrodeoxygenation

In order to obtain the regularities of physicochemical properties of hydroxy protic ionic liquids (PILs) and broaden their potential application, a series of 2-hydroxyethylammonium sulfonate-based PILs were synthesized through proton transfer reaction and characterized by NMR and FT-IR and elemental analysis. Their phase transfer behavior (T _m) and initial decomposition point (T _d) were characterized by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), respectively. Meanwhile, the regularities of density (ρ), viscosity (η) and electrical conductivity (σ) of synthesized PILs at different temperatures were measured. The results indicated that their physicochemical properties were tightly related with their structures and the interactions between cations and anions. In addition, the dissociation constants (pKa) of synthesized PILs were obtained by acid-base titration, which revealed that all synthesized PILs had pKa exceeding 7 and their cations were the crux of determining the pKa value. Moreover, several synthesized PILs with a low melting temperature also showed potential application in the deoxidation reaction of cyclohexanol, as they had conversion rates approximating 100% and the selectivity of cyclohexane or cyclohexene was about 80%.

Sulfobetaines Meet Carboxybetaines: Modulation of Thermo- and Ion-Responsivity, Water Structure, Mechanical Properties, and Cell Adhesion

A procedure for the preparation of copolymers bearing sulfobetaine and carboxybetaine methacrylic-based monomers by free-radical polymerization is described and discussed. A combination of monomers affects the upper critical solution temperature (UCST) in water and in the presence of a simple NaCl electrolyte while retaining the zwitterionic character. In addition, hydrogel samples were prepared and showed tunable water structure and mechanical properties. The total nonfreezable water content decreases with the amount of carboxybetaine segment in the hydrogel feed and the compression moduli were in a range of 0.7-1.6 MPa. Responses to external conditions such as temperature and ion strength were investigated and a potential application such as modulated thermal detection is proposed. The presence of the carboxylate group in the carboxybetaine segment enables a small fluorescence probe and peptide bearing RDG motif to be attached to polymer and hydrogel samples, respectively. The hydrogel samples functionalized with the RGD motif exhibit controlled cell adhesion. Such synthetic strategy based on combination of different zwitterionic segments offers a simple pathway for the development of zwitterionic materials with programmable properties.

Selective separation of cadmium(ii) from zinc(ii) by a novel hydrophobic ionic liquid including an N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-methylpyridyl)-1,2-phenylenediamine-4-amido structure: a hard-soft donor combined method

A novel hydrophobic ionic liquid including an N,N,N',N'-tetrakis(2-methylpyridyl)-1,2-phenylenediamine-4-amido structure ((IL-1,2-tpbd)+NTf2-) was successfully synthesized. (IL-1,2-tpbd)+NTf2- combined one amido (O-hard donor) and four pyridine (N-soft donor) groups. Its Cd2+ and Zn2+ separation behavior in nitric acid solution was investigated as a function of the extraction time, effect of pH etc. by dissolving (IL-1,2-tpbd)+NTf2- in a room temperature ionic liquid, 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ((C6mim)+NTf2-). The extraction kinetics were fairly fast and could reach equilibrium within 4 h. When pHeq ≥ 1.8, the extraction percentage of Cd2+ and Zn2+ remained constant and the maximum separation factor was calculated as 12.78 at pHeq = 3.1; when pHeq < 1.8, the extraction percentage of Cd2+ and Zn2+ decreased drastically due to the protonation of the pyridine groups. Complete stripping of the extracted Cd2+ and Zn2+ from the ionic liquid phase into an aqueous phase was successfully achieved under highly acidic conditions ([HNO3] = 2 M) without adding any other metal complex forming agents. The extraction mechanism was summarized as a cation exchange due to the independence of nitrate ions in the extraction process. Additionally, the results of the slope analysis and UV-vis titration revealed the formation of a 1 : 2 complex. Furthermore, (IL-1,2-tpbd)+NTf2- showed a higher preference for Cd2+ even under the interference of various co-existing metal ions.
