Assistance of the Iron Porphyrin Ligands to the Binding Interaction between the Fe Center and Small Molecules in Solution

Metal-ligand delocalization of iron and cobalt porphyrin complexes in aqueous solutions probed by soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy

Metal-ligand delocalization of metal porphyrin complexes in aqueous solutions was investigated by analyzing the electronic structure of both the metal and ligand sides using soft X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) at the metal L2,3-edges and nitrogen K-edge, respectively. In the N K-edge XAS spectra of the ligands, the energies of the CN π* peaks of cobalt protoporphyrin IX (CoPPIX) are higher than iron protoporphyrin IX (FePPIX). The energy difference between the two lowest peaks in the XAS spectrum of CoPPIX is also larger than that of FePPIX. Nitrogen K-edge inner-shell calculations of metalloporphyrins with different central metals indicate that the energy differences between these peaks reflect the electronic configurations and spin multiplicities of metalloporphyrins. We also investigated the hydration structure of CoPPIX in aqueous solution by analyzing the electronic structure of the ligand and revealed that CoPPIX maintains its five-coordination geometry in aqueous solution. The present study shows high performance of N K-edge XAS of ligands for studying the coordination structures of metalloporphyrins in solutions rather than the metal L2,3-edges of central metals.

Structures and properties of porphyrin-based film materials part I. The films obtained via vapor-assisted methods

This review is devoted to porphyrin-based film materials. Various technological and scientific applications of ones are close to surface and interface related phenomena. In the part I of review the following topics are discussed the recent progress in field of submonolayers, monolayers and multilayers films on the vapor-solid interfaces, including results on (i) conformational behavior of adsorbed molecules, (ii) aggregation and surface phases formation, (iii) on-surface coordination networks, and (iv) on-surface chemical reactions. The examples of combined approaches to developing materials and porphyrin-based film materials application are also presented.

Local energy gap opening induced by hemin dimerization in aqueous solution

The local electronic structure of the hemin Fe center has been investigated by X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy (XAS/XES) for hemin in aqueous solution where hemin dimerization occurs. The XAS and XES spectra of the hemin dimer were then compared with those of the hemin monomer we previously studied in dimethyl sulfoxide solution. A local energy gap opening at the Fe sites was observed for the hemin dimer, with the occupied valence states shifted to lower binding energies, while the unoccupied valence states share the same energies as the hemin monomer. Such a gap opening is argued to originate from the Fe 3d orbital localization induced by hemin dimerization in aqueous solution.

Incisive probing of intermolecular interactions in molecular crystals: core level spectroscopy combined with density functional theory

The α-form of crystalline para-aminobenzoic acid (PABA) has been examined as a model system for demonstrating how the core level spectroscopies X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and near-edge X-ray absorption fine-structure (NEXAFS) can be combined with CASTEP density functional theory (DFT) to provide reliable modeling of intermolecular bonding in organic molecular crystals. Through its dependence on unoccupied valence states NEXAFS is an extremely sensitive probe of variations in intermolecular bonding. Prediction of NEXAFS spectra by CASTEP, in combination with core level shifts predicted by WIEN2K, reproduced experimentally observed data very well when all significant intermolecular interactions were correctly taken into account. CASTEP-predicted NEXAFS spectra for the crystalline state were compared with those for an isolated PABA monomer to examine the impact of intermolecular interactions and local environment in the solid state. The effects of the loss of hydrogen-bonding in carboxylic acid dimers and intermolecular hydrogen bonding between amino and carboxylic acid moieties are evident, with energy shifts and intensity variations of NEXAFS features arising from the associated differences in electronic structure and bonding.
