Fundamental relation between molecular geometry and real-space topology. Combined AIM, ELI-D, and ASF analysis of hapticities and intramolecular hydrogen-hydrogen bonds in zincocene-related compounds

Coordination Behavior of the Tellurium Incorporated Mercuraazametallamacrocycle and Investigation of d10 ⋅⋅⋅d10 Interactions between Closed Shell (Ag+ Hg2+ ) Metal Ions

Herein, a new tellurium and mercury containing mercuraazametallamacrocycle has been prepared via (2+2) condensation of bis(o-aminophenyl)telluride and bis(o-formylphenyl)mercury(II). The isolated bright yellow solid of mercuraazametallamacrocycle has adopted unsymmetrical figure-of-eight conformation in the crystal structure. To study the metallophilic interactions between closed shell metal ions, the macrocyclic ligand has been treated with two equiv. of AgOTf (OTf=trifluoromethansulfonate) and AgBF4 , which afforded greenish-yellow bimetallic silver complexes. The isolated silver complexes displayed intramolecular Hg⋅⋅⋅Ag, Te⋅⋅⋅Ag interactions as well as intermolecular Hg⋅⋅⋅Hg interactions and formed an extended 1D molecular chain by directing six atoms to interact as TeII ⋅⋅⋅AgI ⋅⋅⋅HgII ⋅⋅⋅HgII ⋅⋅⋅AgI ⋅⋅⋅TeII in a non linear fashion. The Hg⋅⋅⋅Ag, Te⋅⋅⋅Ag interactions have also been studied in solution by 199 Hg, 125 Te NMR spectroscopy, absorption, and emission spectroscopy. In DFT calculations, the Atom in Molecule (AIM) analysis, non-covalent interactions (NCI), natural bonding orbital (NBO) analysis strongly supported for experimental evidences and revealed that the intermolecular Hg⋅⋅⋅Hg interaction is stronger than the intramolecular Hg⋅⋅⋅Ag interactions.

Hapticity of asymmetric rhodium-allyl compounds in the light of real-space bonding indicators

Rhodium boryl complexes are valuable catalysts for hydro- or diboration reactions of alkenes, but can also react with ketones (R2C=O) and imines (R2C=NR′) giving rise to insertion products having formally Rh–R2C–O/NR′–B linkages. The resulting molecular structures, however, may show complex metal–ligand and ligand–ligand interaction patterns with often unclear metal–ligand connectivities (hapticities, ηn). In order to assign the correct hapticity in a set of asymmetric rhodium-allyl compounds with molecular structures indicating η1−5bonding, a comprehensive DFT study was conducted. The study comprises determination of a variety of real-space bonding indicators derived from computed electron and pair densities according to the AIM, ELI-D, NCI, and DORI topological and surface approaches, which uncover the metal–ligand connectivties and suggest an asymmetric ligand–metal donation/metal–ligand back-donation framework according to the Dewar–Chatt–Duncanson model.

Linear MgCp*2 vs Bent CaCp*2: London Dispersion, Ligand-Induced Charge Localizations, and Pseudo-Pregostic C-H···Ca Interactions

In the family of metallocenes, MgCp*₂ (Cp* = pentamethylcyclopentadienyl) exhibits a regular linear sandwich structure, whereas CaCp*₂ is bent in both the gas phase and solid state. Bending is typically observed for metal ions which possess a lone pair. Here, we investigate which electronic differences cause the bending in complexes lacking lone pairs at the metal atoms. The bent gas-phase geometry of CaCp*₂ suggests that the bending must have an intramolecular origin. Geometry optimizations with and without dispersion effects/d-type polarization functions on MCp₂ and MCp*₂ gas-phase complexes (M = Ca, Mg) establish that attractive methyl···methyl London dispersion interactions play a decisive role in the bending in CaCp*₂. A sufficient polarizability of the metal to produce a shallow bending potential energy curve is a prerequisite but is not the reason for the bending. Concomitant ligand-induced charge concentrations and localizations at the metal atoms are studied in further detail, for which real-space bonding and orbital-based descriptors are used. Low-temperature crystal structures of MgCp*₂ and CaCp*₂ were determined which facilitated the identification and characterization of intermolecular pseudo-pregostic interactions, C-H···Ca, in the CaCp*₂ crystal structure.
