Abstract
The collision-induced dissociation of the protonated cytosine-guanine pair was studied using tandem mass spectrometry (MS3) coupled to infrared multiple photon dissociation spectroscopy with the free electron laser at Orsay (CLIO) to determine the structure of the CH+ and GH+ ionic fragments. The results were rationalized with the help of electronic structure calculations at the density functional theory level with the B3LYP/6-311++G(3df,2p) method. Several tautomers of each fragment were identified for the first time, some of which were previously predicted by other authors. In addition, two unexpected and minor tautomers were also found: cytosine keto-imino [CKI(1,2,3,4)H+] and guanine keto-amino [GKA(1,3,7)H+]. These results highlight the importance of the DNA base tautomerization assisted by inter- and intramolecular proton or hydrogen transfer within the protonated pairs.

Abstract
Ag+-mediated base pairing is valuable for synthesising DNA-based silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and nanoclusters (AgNCs). Recently, we reported the formation of a [Ag(cytidine)2]+ complex in dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), which facilitated the evaluation of the effect of cytosine-Ag+-cytosine (C-Ag+-C) base pairing on the degree of AgNP aggregation in solution. As an aprotic solvent, DMSO was expected to dissolve the [Ag(cytidine)2]+ complex, and powerful reducing agents, such as organic electron donors. In this study, the chemical reduction of a cytidine/Ag+ system using a powerful reducing agent tetrakis(dimethylamino)ethylene (TDAE) was investigated. 1H/13C/15N NMR spectroscopic evidence was obtained to identify the iminium dication (TDAE2+), which is an oxidised form of TDAE. The results were compared with those obtained using another organic electron donor, tetrathiafulvalene (TTF), which exhibits a relatively lower reduction activity than TDAE. AgNPs prepared via redox reaction between [Ag(cytidine)2]+ and organic electron donors (TDAE and TTF) were characterised using UV-Vis spectroscopy and nanoparticle tracking analysis. It was found that the formation of C-Ag+-C base pairing inhibited the aggregation of AgNPs in solution. In addition, in the presence of cytidine, the total concentration of the AgNP solution was affected by the reduction activity of the reducing agent.

Abstract
In this paper, we present the IRMPD spectra of three ionic complexes between guanine (G) and silver (Ag+): [GAg-H2O]+, [GAgG]+ produced in the electrospray ionization source of the mass spectrometer, and [GAg]+ produced by collision induced dissociation of the [GAgG]+ complex. On the basis of the comparison of theoretically calculated IR spectra, we show that there are two isomers of each complex containing two different keto-amino (KA) tautomers of G (GKA(1,9) and GKA(1,7)). The observed isomers are the most stable structures in aqueous solution, and their experimentally estimated relative populations are in better agreement with the calculated relative populations in solution than in the gas phase, both at 298 K. We concluded that these observations suggest that GKA(1,9) and GKA(1,7) coexist in solution according to previous theoretical reports (Colominas, C.; et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1996, 118, 6811). We were unable to find any evidence of the presence of the GEA(9), GKA(3,7), GKA(3,9), or GKA(7,9), whose relative stabilities in solution are strongly dependent on the theoretical method used to account for the solvent effect (Hanus, M.; et al. J. Am. Chem. Soc. 2003, 125, 7678).

Abstract
The redox properties of metallo-base pairs remain to be elucidated. Herein, we report the detailed 1H/13C/109Ag NMR spectroscopic and cyclic voltammetric characterisation of the [Ag(cytidine)2]+ complex as isolated cytosine-Ag+-cytosine (C-Ag+-C) base pairs. We also performed comparative studies between cytidine/Ag+ and other nucleoside/Ag+ systems by using cyclic voltammetry measurements. In addition, to evaluate the effect of [Ag(cytidine)2]+ formation on the chemical reduction of Ag+ to Ag, we utilised the redox reaction between Ag+ and tetrathiafulvalene (TTF). We found that Ag+-mediated base pairing lowers the redox potential of the Ag+/Ag couple. In addition, C-Ag+-C base pairing makes it more difficult to reduce captured Ag+ ions than in other nucleoside/Ag+ systems. Remarkably, the cytidine/Ag+ system can be utilised to control the redox potential of the Ag+/Ag couple in DMSO. This feature of the cytidine/Ag+ system may be exploited for Ag nanoparticle synthesis by using the redox reaction between Ag+ and TTF.

Abstract
Infrared multiphoton dissociation (IRMPD) spectroscopy is commonly used to determine the structure of isolated, mass-selected ions in the gas phase. This method has been widely used since it became available at free-electron laser (FEL) user facilities. Thus, in this Minireview, we examine the use of IRMPD/FEL spectroscopy for investigating ions derived from small molecules, metal complexes, organometallic compounds and biorelevant ions. Furthermore, we outline new applications of IRMPD spectroscopy to study biomolecules.

Abstract
The relationship between the state of charge and spectroscopy of DNA-protected silver emitters is not yet well understood. This remains one of the major issues to unveil in order to fully disentangle the spectroscopic features of these novel systems. It is a well known fact that a fluorescence response arises upon chemical reduction of silver cations attached to DNA, leading to neutral (or partially oxidized) "bright" clusters. It is important to note that the absence of fluorescence in completely ionic complexes is universal in the sense that it does not depend on any experimental variable. This suggests that its origin may be founded on the nature of the interaction between DNA bases and silver cations. Nevertheless, to the best of our knowledge, no explanation exists for this charge dependent switching between dark completely ionic complexes and bright (neutral or partially oxidized) clusters. In this brief report we address this experimental fact on the basis of the electronic structure of the complex as a function of its charge and quantum dynamical simulations of the processes following photoexcitation. These data provide a dynamical picture of the correlation between charge and fluorescence.

Abstract
The Watson-Crick structure of DNA is among the most well-known molecular structures of our time. However, alternative base-pairing motifs are also known to occur, often depending on base sequence, pH, or the presence of cations. Pairing of cytosine (C) bases induced by the sharing of a single proton (C-H(+)-C) may give rise to the so-called i-motif, which occurs primarily in expanded trinucleotide repeats and the telomeric region of DNA, particularly at low pH. At physiological pH, silver cations were recently found to stabilize C dimers in a C-Ag(+)-C structure analogous to the hemiprotonated C-dimer. Here we use infrared ion spectroscopy in combination with density functional theory calculations at the B3LYP/6-311G+(2df,2p) level to show that copper in the 1+ oxidation state induces an analogous formation of C-Cu(+)-C structures. In contrast to protons and these transition metal ions, alkali metal ions induce a different dimer structure, where each ligand coordinates the alkali metal ion in a bidentate fashion in which the N3 and O2 atoms of both cytosine ligands coordinate to the metal ion, sacrificing hydrogen-bonding interactions between the ligands for improved chelation of the metal cation.

Abstract
We are presenting the electronic photofragment spectra of the protonated pyrimidine DNA base homodimers. Only the thymine dimer exhibits a well structured vibrational progression, while the protonated monomer shows broad vibrational bands. This shows that proton bonding can block some nonradiative processes present in the monomer.

Abstract
Recently, DNA molecules have received great attention because of their potential applications in material science. One interesting example is the production of highly fluorescent and tunable DNA-Agn clusters with cytosine (C)-rich DNA strands. Here, we report the UV photofragmentation spectra of gas-phase cytosine···Ag(+)···cytosine (C2Ag(+)) and cytosine···H(+)···cytosine (C2H(+)) complexes together with theoretical calculations. In both cases, the excitation energy does not differ significantly from that of isolated cytosine or protonated cytosine, indicating that the excitation takes place on the DNA base. However, the excited-state lifetime of the C2H(+) (τ = 85 fs), estimated from the bandwidth of the spectrum, is at least 2 orders of magnitude shorter than that of the C2Ag(+) (τ > 5000 fs). The increased excited-state lifetime upon silver complexation is quite unexpected, and it clearly opens the question about what factors are controlling the nonradiative decay in pyrimidine DNA bases. This is an important result for the expanding field of metal-mediated base pairing and may also be important to the photophysical properties of DNA-templated fluorescent silver clusters.
