Self-Association Behavior of a Novel Nonproteinogenic β-Strand-Mimic in an Organic Solvent

Dibenzannulated peri-acenoacenes from anthanthrene derivatives

A series of dibenzannulated phenyl-annulated [4,2]peri-acenoacenes have been synthesized in three straightforward steps from 4,10-dibromoanthanthrone (vat orange 3). The phenyl bisannulation of [4,2]peri-acenoacene provides extra stability by increasing the overall aromatic character of the molecules, and allows for a 45-80% increase of the molar extinction coefficient (ε) compared to their [5,2]peri-acenoacene isomers. Depending on the substituents attached to the π-conjugated core, some derivatives exhibit strong aggregation in the solid state with association constant (Ka) up to 255 M-1, resulting in a significant broadening of the absorption spectrum and a substantial decrease of the bandgap value (more than 0.3 V) from solution to the solid state. One [4,2]peri-acenoacene derivative was doubly reduced using cesium and the crystal structure of the resulting salt has been obtained. Field-effect transistors showing a temperature-dependent hole mobility have been tested.

Effect of non-covalent self-dimerization on the spectroscopic and electrochemical properties of mixed Cu(i) complexes

A series of six new Cu(i) complexes with ([Cu(N-{4-R}pyridine-2-yl-methanimine)(PPh₃)Br]) formulation, where R corresponds to a donor or acceptor p-substituent, have been synthesized and were used to study self-association effects on their structural and electrochemical properties. X-ray diffraction results showed that in all complexes the packing is organized from a dimer generated by supramolecular π stacking and hydrogen bonding. ¹H-NMR experiments at several concentrations showed that all complexes undergo a fast-self-association monomer-dimer equilibrium in solution, while changes in resonance frequency towards the high or low field in specific protons of the imine ligand allow establishing that dimers have similar structures to those found in the crystal. The thermodynamic parameters for this self-association process were calculated from dimerization constants determined by VT-¹H-NMR experiments for several concentrations at different temperatures. The values for K _D (4.0 to 70.0 M^-1 range), ΔH (-1.4 to -2.6 kcal mol^-1 range), ΔS (-0.2 to 2.1 cal mol^-1 K^-1 range), and ΔG ₂₉₈ (-0.8 to -2.0 kcal mol^-1 range) are of the same order and indicate that the self-dimerization process is enthalpically driven for all complexes. The electrochemical profile of the complexes shows two redox Cu(ii)/Cu(i) processes whose relative intensities are sensitive to concentration changes, indicating that both species are in chemical equilibrium, with the monomer and the dimer having different electrochemical characteristics. We associate this behaviour with the structural lability of the Cu(i) centre that allows the monomeric molecules to reorder conformationally to achieve a more adequate assembly in the non-covalent dimer. As expected, structural properties in the solid and in solution, as well as their electrochemical properties, are not correlated with the electronic parameters usually used to evaluate R substituent effects. This confirms that the properties of the Cu(i) complexes are usually more influenced by steric effects than by the inductive effects of substituents of the ligands. In fact, the results obtained showed the importance of non-covalent intermolecular interactions in the structuring of the coordination geometry around the Cu centre and in the coordinative stability to avoid dissociative equilibria.

Graphene oxide wrapped melamine sponge as an efficient and recoverable adsorbent for Pb(II) removal from fly ash leachate

Lead is one of the most toxic elements, which has been well recognized for its negative effect on the environment and human beings. But, preliminary methods such as chemical precipitation, membrane separation etc. and commonly used adsorbents based on adsorption technology were found to be expensive and inefficient. In this study, we modify the surface of melamine sponge (MS) with polydopamine (PDA) and then coat with glutathione/graphene oxide (GG) as the adsorbent (MS@GG) to removal Pb(II) from aqueous solutions and fly ash leachate. The maximum adsorption capacity of MS@GG was calculated to be 349.7 mg Pb/g GG, and the reaction reached equilibrium in 30 min which were both higher than raw GG material and most previously reported adsorbents due to active sites on the surface of GG, as well as the unique macroporous and hydrophilic structure of MS. Meanwhile, based on its easy separation, by using HCl as the regeneration agent, the materials revealed good reproducibility. In addition, when MS@GG was applied for the removal of Pb(II) in fly ash leachate, the removal efficiency reached up to 99.24%, indicating that the novel MS@GG was the promising candidate adsorbent material for Pb(II) removal.

Amino acid sequence controls the self-assembled superstructure morphology of N-acetylated tri-β3-peptides

Peptides based on unnatural β3-amino acids offer a versatile platform for the design of self-assembling nanostructures due to the folding stability of the 14-helix and the high symmetry of the side chains inherent in this geometry. We have previously described that N-terminal acetylation (Ac-) forms a supramolecular self-assembly motif that allows β3-peptides to assemble head-to-tail into a helical nanorod which then further bundles into hierarchical superstructures. Here we investigate the effect of the topography of the 14-helical nanorod on lateral self-assembly. Specifically, we report on the variations in the superstructure of three isomeric peptides comprising the same three β3-amino acid residues: β3-leucine (L), β3-isoleucine (I) β3-alanine (A) to give peptides Ac-β3[LIA], Ac-β3[IAL] and Ac-β3[ALI]. AFM imaging shows markedly different superstructures for the three peptides. Well defined synchrotron far-infrared spectra reveal uniform geometries with a high degree of similarity between the isomeric peptides in the amide modes of the 400–650 wavenumber range. Far-IR also confirms that the C-terminal carboxyl group is free in the assemblies, thus it is solvated in the dispersant. Hence, the differences in the superstructures formed by the fibers are defined primarily by van der Waals energy minimization between the varied cross sectional morphologies of the core nanorods.

Antiparallel Self-Association of a γ,α-Hybrid Peptide: More Relevance of Weak Interactions

To learn how a preorganized peptide-based molecular template, together with diverse weak non-covalent interactions, leads to an effective self-association, we investigated the conformational characteristics of a simple γ,α-hybrid model peptide, Boc-γ-Abz-Gly-OMe. The single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed the existence of a fully extended β-strand-like structure stabilized by two non-conventional C-H⋅⋅⋅O=C intramolecular H-bonds. The 2D (1) H NMR ROESY experiment led us to propose that the flat topology of the urethane-γ-Abz-amide moiety is predominantly preserved in a non-polar environment. The self-association of the energetically more favorable antiparallel β-strand-mimic in solid-state engenders an unusual 'flight of stairs' fabricated through face-to-face and edge-to-edge Ar⋅⋅⋅Ar interactions. In conjunction with FT-IR spectroscopic analysis in chloroform, we highlight that conformationally semi-rigid γ-Abz foldamer in appositely designed peptides may encourage unusual β-strand or β-sheet-like self-association and supramolecular organization stabilized via weak attractive forces.
