Photophysics of 2-(4'-amino-2'-hydroxyphenyl)-1H-imidazo-[4,5-c]pyridine and its analogues: intramolecular proton transfer versus intramolecular charge transfer

Progress in the Development of Imidazopyridine-Based Fluorescent Probes for Diverse Applications

Different classes of Imidazopyridine i.e., Imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine, Imidazo[1,5-a] pyridine, Imidazo[4,5-b]pyridine, have shown versatile applications in various fields. In this review, we have concisely presented the usefulness of the fluorescent property of imidazopyridine in different fields such as imaging tools, optoelectronics, metal ion detection, etc. Fluorescence mechanisms such as excited state intramolecular proton transfer, photoinduced electron transfer, fluorescence resonance energy transfer, intramolecular charge transfer, etc. are incorporated in the designed fluorophore to make it for fluorescent applications. It has been widely employed for metal ion detection, where selective metal ion detection is possible with triazole-attached imidazopyridine, β-carboline imidazopyridine hybrid, quinoline conjugated imidazopyridine, and many more. Also, other popular applications involve organic light emitting diodes and cell imaging. This review shed a light on recent development in this area especially focusing on the optical properties of the molecules with their usage which would be helpful in designing application-based new imidazopyridine derivatives.

Light-Driven Switching between Intramolecular Proton-Transfer and Charge-Transfer States

A molecular photoswitch, 2-(4'-diethylamino-2'-hydroxyphenyl)-1H-imidazo-[4,5-b]pyridine (DHP), with mutually independent paths of excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) and twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) was developed. Control over these processes was attained by switching the solvents. Depending on the solvent's hydrogen-bond capacity and polarity, either one of the photoprocesses (ESIPT or TICT) or both can be triggered. Accordingly, normal and tautomer emissions, normal and TICT emissions, or triple emission of normal, tautomer, and TICT were obtained from the molecule. The emissions were resolved by fluorescence lifetime. The conclusions were established by synthesizing and studying the methoxy derivative of the molecule.

NLOphoric imidazole-fused fluorescent anthraquinone dyes

The Z-scan and DFT techniques were explored to investigate the non-linear optical properties of anthraquinone fused imidazole-based D-π-A dyes. With the help of UV-visible spectral analysis, pH study, CV analysis, HOMO-LUMO interaction, MEP plots, and quinoidal character the influence of intramolecular charge transfer characteristics and H-bonding process on electronic and photophysical studies of anthraquinone derivatives were understood. The dyes 2-(4-(diethylamino)-2-hydroxyphenyl)-3H-anthra[1,2-d]imidazole-6,11-dione (AQ1) and 2-(2-hydroxynaphthalen-1-yl)-1H-anthra[1,2-d]imidazole-6,11-dione (AQ2) displayed a single emission with pronounced Stokes shift and thermal stability (upto 290 °C). The dye AQ1 exhibited strong charge transfer character which is explained by the ICT process leading to high nonlinear susceptibility χ⁽³⁾ in AQ1 3.43 × 10^-13 e.s.u relative to the dye AQ2 which has only ESIPT core. But, the dye AQ2 6.27 J cm^-2 showed better optical limiting value. The NLO properties of AQ1 and AQ2 were computed by DFT functionals based on Hartree Fork (HF) percentage exchange. The dye AQ1 exhibits noticeable NLO properties. The global hybrid functionals with HF composition beyond 50% (BHHLYP, M06-HF) and the long rang corrected functionals (CAM-B3LYP, ωB97, and ωB97X) demonstrated comparable NLO properties relative to B3LYP and PBE0. It was observed that the combined effect of ICT and the H-bonding cores enhance the NLO properties. The experimental findings (Z-scan) were successfully correlated with theoretical (DFT) results.

The origin of the longer wavelength emission in 2-(4-fluorophenylamino)-5-(2,4-dihydroxybenzeno)-1,3,4-thiadiazole and its analogue 2-phenylamino-5-(2-hydroxybenzono)-1,3,4-thiadiazole† ‡

In aqueous solution, 2-(4-fluorophenylamino)-5-(2,4-dihydroxybenzeno)-1,3,4-thiadiazole (FABT) was found to emit dual emission and the longer wavelength emission was assigned to the combination of aggregation and conformational change. In a number of molecules that possess an intramolecular hydrogen bond between the proton donor and the acceptor, the longer wavelength emission is often observed due to the emission from the tautomer formed by excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT). Therefore, an analogue of FABT, 2-phenylamino-5-(2-hydroxybenzono)-1,3,4-thiadiazole (PHBT), was synthesized to determine the origin of the longer wavelength emission. The luminescence of PHBT and its methoxy derivatives was studied and compared with that of FABT. Theoretical calculations were also performed on both FABT and PHBT. Based on the experimental and theoretical investigations, the nonexistence of the keto tautomer in the ground state and the origin of the longer wavelength emission are divulged.

Selective Synthesis and Photoluminescence Study of Pyrazolopyridopyridazine Diones and N-Aminopyrazolopyrrolopyridine Diones

The newly designed luminol structures of pyrazolopyridopyridazine diones and N-aminopyrazolopyrrolopyridine diones were synthesized from versatile 1,3-diaryfuropyrazolopyridine-6,8-diones, 1,3-diarylpyrazolopyrrolopyridine-6,8-diones, or 1,3-diaryl-7-methylpyrazolopyrrolopyridine-6,8-diones with hydrazine monohydrate. Photoluminescent and solvatofluorism properties containing UV–Vis absorption, emission spectra, and quantum yield (Φ_f) study of pyrazolopyridopyridazine diones and N-aminopyrazolopyrrolopyridine diones were also studied. Generally, most of pyrazolopyrrolopyridine-6,8-diones 6 exhibited the significant fluorescence intensity and the substituent effect when compared with N-aminopyrazolopyrrolopyridine diones, particularly for 6c and 6j with a m-chloro group. Additionally, the fluorescence intensity of 6j was significantly promoted due to the suitable conjugation conformation. Based on the quantum yield (Φ_f) study, the value of compound 6j (0.140) with planar structural skeletal was similar to that of standard luminol (1, 0.175).

The novel excited state intramolecular proton transfer broken by intermolecular hydrogen bonds in HOF system

2-(4-(Dimethylamino)phenyl)-3-hydroxy-6,7-dimethoxy-4Hchromen-4-one (HOF) was synthesized in experiment (Wang et al., Sensor. Actuat. B-Chem. 277 (2018) 484), and its photophysical and photochemical properties was reported. However the corresponding full theoretical interpretation of mechanisms is inadequate. In the present research, the intermolecular hydrogen bond structure of HOF-methanol complex (HOF-2M) was found, and mechanism of alcohols monitoring of HOF was deeply studied using the density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT). The enhancing mechanism of the excited state hydrogen bond is verified by analyzing the hydrogen bond parameters, infrared spectra and frontier molecular orbitals. Importantly, the reduced density gradient visual analysis and topological quantificational analysis confirm that the intramolecular hydrogen bond of HOF is broken by strong intermolecular hydrogen bonds of HOF-2M using the Atoms-In-Molecule theory. The obtained absorption and emission spectra are found to agree well with the experimental results and the complete quenched keto-emission in methanol and ethanol solvents provide a suitable sensing mechanism for detecting alcohols. The reaction path of the excited state intramolecular proton transfer for HOF is explained in detail through the constructed potential energy curves.

Aggregation induced enhanced and exclusively highly Stokes shifted emission from an excited state intramolecular proton transfer exhibiting molecule

The inner filter effect due to self-quenching dominates the normal emission of dyes at higher concentrations, which would limit their applications. Since normal emission was also observed with aggregation induced emission enhancement (AIEE) active excited state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT) exhibiting molecules, two new molecules are synthesized and studied to obtain normal emission free AIEE. The molecules are 4-(3-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-5-tert-butyl-4-hydroxybenzyl)-2-(benzo[d]thiazol-2-yl)-6-tert-butyl phenol (bis-HPBT) and its oxazole analogue (bis-HPBO). Of these molecules, bis-HPBT, which is weakly fluorescent in tetrahydrofuran solution, shows a sudden high enhancement in fluorescence upon addition of 70% water due to the formation of aggregates. Though the normal emission is also observed in tetrahydrofuran, it is completely eliminated in the aggregates, and the aggregates display exclusive tautomer emission. However, bis-HPBO does not emit such an exclusive tautomer emission in the water/tetrahydrofuran mixture. The enhancement in the fluorescence quantum yield of bis-HPBT in 70% water is ∼300 times higher than that in tetrahydrofuran. The modulated molecular structure of bis-HPBT is the cause of this outstanding AIEE. The observation of almost exclusive tautomer emission is a new additional advantage of AIEE from bis-HPBT over other ESIPT molecules. Since the tautomer emission is highly Stokes shifted, no overlap with the absorption spectrum occurs and therefore, the inner filter effect is averted. The aggregated structure acts as a good fluorescence chemosensor for metal ions as well as anions. The aggregated structure is cell permeable and can be used for cell imaging.

Exclusive excited state intramolecular proton transfer from a 2-(2′-hydroxyphenyl)benzimidazole derivative

The existence of trans-enol was made unviable by crafting a steric hindrance that stops the normal emission of bis-HPBI.
