Abstract
A panel of metal-betaine-bistriflimide complexes (with minimum formula M[Bet]2[Tf2N]2, where M = Mg, Ca, Zn, Cu and Ni) has been prepared in high purity and a quantitative yield. In parallel, a series of metal bistriflimide salts (sharing the same metal cations) has been synthesized and characterized though the same set of techniques. The current work presents a first comprehensive investigation of the physical-chemical properties of these two classes of metal systems, whose importance in a variety of applicative fields was not yet matched, to the best of our knowledge, by an adequate study of their characteristics. All the considered compounds have been spectroscopically, thermally and electrochemically characterized, and their solubility characteristics assessed, gaining insights into the role of metal cations in the definition of their properties. On the other hand, the evident effect of the betaine coordination on the prepared complexes' solubility, thermal stability, melting point, glass and solid-solid transitions, redox behaviour and electrochemical window was ascertained, providing results which would allow a more informed use and application of these classes of divalent metal complexes.

Abstract
By using molecular dynamics simulations, we investigate the structural and dynamic properties of mixtures of 1,3-dimethylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, [C1C1im][Tf2N] and 1-dodecyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide, [C12C1im][Tf2N] (also C1 and C12 in short). Such mixtures feature an imidazolium bistriflimide salt with a very short alkyl chain, not giving rise to any nano-segregation as a pure component, with another one with a longer alkyl chain that exhibits a substantial nano-segregation as a pure liquid. As the mole fraction of the long-chain component C12 is increased, the so-called pre-peak of the structure factor S(q), occurring in the region 1-3 nm-1, shows a shift to higher values of the wavevector q, mirroring a decrease of the corresponding correlation length. Moreover, the intensity of the pre-peak strongly increases with the C12 concentration. These results are in very good agreement with experimental X-ray scattering data in the literature. On the other hand, the diffusion of the ions is found to exhibit a simple behaviour consistent with the increased viscosity of the mixture, and these results are also in good agreement with NMR experimental data from the literature. The simulation results are rationalized as caused by a structuring effect, similar to the hydrophobic effect, of the alkyl domains of the C12 component dissolved in the "solvent" represented by the C1 cation, the Tf2N- anion and the C12 cation head. In short, the exclusion of the alkyl chains from the polar network, a process mostly governed by electrostatic interactions, favours the formation of hydrophobic domains, which in turn exert a structuring effect on the ions of the polar domains, favouring a stronger ionic interaction. This is finally reflected in a shorter correlation length and a higher intensity of the pre-peak of the structure factor S(q) as the C12 mole fraction is increased. At variance with the microscopic structure, the diffusion of all three types of ions is not strongly influenced by the nano-segregation and is essentially dependent on the viscosity of the mixture.

Abstract
Ionic liquids (ILs) exhibit unique properties that have led to their development and widespread use for a variety of applications. Development efforts have generally focused on achieving desired macroscopic properties via tuning of the IL through variation of the cations and anions. Both the macroscopic and microscopic properties of an IL influence its tunability and thus feasibility of use for selected applications. Works geared toward a microscopic understanding of the nature and strength of the intrinsic cation-anion interactions of ILs have been limited to date. Specifically, the intrinsic strength of the cation-anion interactions in ILs is largely unknown. In previous work, we employed threshold collision-induced dissociation (TCID) approaches supported and enhanced by electronic structure calculations to determine the bond dissociation energies (BDEs) and characterize the nature of the cation-anion interactions in a series of four 2 : 1 clusters of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cations with the hexafluorophosphate anion, [2Cnmim:PF6]+. To examine the effects of the 1-alkyl chain on the structure and energetics of binding, the cation was varied over the series: 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium, [C2mim]+, 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium, [C4mim]+, 1-hexyl-3-methylimidazolium, [C6mim]+, and 1-octyl-3-methylimidazolium, [C8mim]+. The variation in the strength of binding among these [2Cnmim:PF6]+ clusters was found to be similar in magnitude to the average experimental uncertainty in the measurements. To definitively establish an absolute order of binding among these [2Cnmim:PF6]+ clusters, we extend this work again using TCID and electronic structure theory approaches to include competitive binding studies of three mixed 2 : 1 clusters of 1-alkyl-3-methylimidazolium cations and the hexafluorophosphate anion, [Cn-2mim:PF6:Cnmim]+ for n = 4, 6, and 8. The absolute BDEs of these mixed [Cn-2mim:PF6:Cnmim]+ clusters as well as the absolute difference in the strength of the intrinsic binding interactions as a function of the cation are determined with significantly improved precision. By combining the thermochemical results of the previous independent and present competitive measurements, the BDEs of the [2Cnmim:PF6]+ clusters are both more accurately and more precisely determined. Comparisons are made to results for the analogous [2Cnmim:BF4]+ and [Cn-2mim:BF4:Cnmim]+ clusters previously examined to elucidate the effects of the [PF6]- and [BF4]- anions on the binding.

Further, by combining the thermochemical results of the previous and present studies, the BDEs of the [2Cnmim:BF4]+ clusters are more accurately and precisely determined.

Abstract
Data on the gas-phase energetics of anion/cation interactions are relatively scarce. In this work, gas-phase alkali metal cation basicity (AMCB) scales were established for a series of 15 benzoate ions XC6H4COO- with Li+, Na+, K+, Rb+, and Cs+ on the basis of mass spectrometry experiments and high-level calculations. A wide range of electron-donating and electron-withdrawing substituents were included in the study. The thermochemical values were calculated by ab initio methodologies and extrapolated to the complete basis set limit. For each metal cation, the experimental relative cation basicity values of the anions were established quantitatively by applying the Cooks' kinetic method to the cation-bound heterodimers [(XC6H4COO-)M+(YC6H4COO-)]-, generated by electrospray ionization. The self-consistency of these AMCB scales was ascertained by multiple overlap of the individual relative basicities. In parallel, the proton gas-phase basicities (GBs) of the benzoate anions (gas-phase acidities of the respective benzoic acids) were calculated in order to compare the results of the theoretical method with known experimental GB values. The experimental and calculated GB values agree quite accurately (average absolute deviation = 3.2 kJ mol-1). The relative experimental AMCB scales and the absolute calculated AMCB scales are highly correlated, and the two sets agree by better than 4 kJ mol-1. It is also demonstrated that the five series of calculated AMCBs are highly correlated with the calculated GB.

Abstract
The abundance of an ion in an electrospray ionization mass spectrum is dependent on many factors beyond just solution concentration. Even in cases where the analytes of interest are permanently charged (under study here are ammonium and phosphonium ions) and do not rely on protonation or other chemical processes to acquire the necessary charge, factors such as cation structure, molecular weight, solvent, and the identity of the anion can affect results. Screening of a variety of combinations of cations, anions, and solvents provided insight into some of the more important factors. Rigid cations and anions that conferred high conductivity tended to provide the highest responses. The solvent that most closely reflected actual solution composition was acetonitrile, while methanol, acetonitrile/water, and dichloromethane produced a higher degree of discrimination between different ions. Functional groups that had affinity for the solvent tended to depress response. These observations will provide predictive power when accounting for analytes that for reasons of high reactivity can not be isolated.

Abstract
The authors report the first modification of ionic liquids with metal carbamates. A selection of homoleptic N,N-dialkylcarbamates of group 4 and 5 metals, M(O2CNR2)n, were dissolved in bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide-based ionic liquids, i.e. [bmim][Tf2N] and [P(oct)4][Tf2N], at 293 K. The resulting solutions were characterized by means of IR, UV and NMR spectroscopy, and the data were compared to those of the respective metal compounds. Notably, the dissolution process did not proceed with the release of any of the original carbamato ligands, thus preserving the intact coordination frame around the metal centre. The solvation process of Ti(O2CNiPr2)4, as a model species, in [bmim][Tf2N] was rationalized by DFT calculations. As a comparative study, solutions of NbF5 and MCl5 (M = Nb, Ta) in [bmim][Tf2N] were also investigated, revealing the possible occurrence of solvent anion coordination to the metal centres.

Abstract
Electrostatic interactions are characteristic of ionic liquids (ILs) and play a pivotal role in determining the formation of species when solutes are dissolved in them. The formation of new species/complexes has been investigated for certain ILs. However, such investigations have not yet focused on eutectic liquids, which are a promising class of ILs. These liquids (or liquid coordination complexes, LCCs) are rather new and are composed of cationic and anionic chloro complexes of metals. To date, these liquids have been employed as electrolytes to deposit metals and as solvents for catalysis. The present study deals with a liquid that is prepared by mixing a 1.2:1 mol ratio of AlCl3 and 1-butylpyrrolidine. An attempt has been made to understand the interactions of FeCl2 with the organic molecule using spectroscopy. It was found that dissolved Fe(II) species interact mainly with the IL anion and such interactions can lead to changes in the cation of the electrolyte. Furthermore, the viability of depositing thick magnetic films of Fe and Fe-Al has been explored.

Abstract
Vegetable oils and fatty acid esters are suitable precursor molecules for the production of a variety of bio-based products and materials, such as paints and coatings, plastics, soaps, lubricants, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, printing inks, surfactants, and biofuels. Here, we report the possibility of using Lewis acidic ionic liquids (ILs) to obtain polyunsaturated ester dimerization-oligomerization and/or, in the presence of another terminal alkene (propene), co-polymerization. In particular, we have tested the Lewis acidic mixtures arising from the addition of a proper amount of GaCl3 (Χ > 0.5) to two chloride-based (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride, [bmim]Cl, and 1-butylisoquinolium chloride, [BuIsoq]Cl) or by dissolution of a smaller amount of Al(Tf2N)3 (Χ = 0.1) in 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide, [bmim][Tf2N]. On the basis of product distribution studies, [bmim][Tf2N]/Al(Tf2N)3 appears the most suitable medium in which methyl linoleate alkylation with propene can compete with methyl linoleate or propene oligomerization.

Abstract
Density functional theory (DFT), density functional theory molecular dynamics (DFT-MD), and classical molecular dynamics using polarizable force fields (PFF-MD) are employed to evaluate the influence of Li(+) on the structure, transport, and electrochemical stability of three potential ionic liquid electrolytes: N-methyl-N-butylpyrrolidinium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide ([pyr14][TFSI]), N-methyl-N-propylpyrrolidinium bis(fluorosulfonyl)imide ([pyr13][FSI]), and 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium boron tetrafluoride ([EMIM][BF4]). We characterize the Li(+) solvation shell through DFT computations of [Li(Anion)n]((n-1)-) clusters, DFT-MD simulations of isolated Li(+) in small ionic liquid systems, and PFF-MD simulations with high Li-doping levels in large ionic liquid systems. At low levels of Li-salt doping, highly stable solvation shells having two to three anions are seen in both [pyr14][TFSI] and [pyr13][FSI], whereas solvation shells with four anions dominate in [EMIM][BF4]. At higher levels of doping, we find the formation of complex Li-network structures that increase the frequency of four anion-coordinated solvation shells. A comparison of computational and experimental Raman spectra for a wide range of [Li(Anion)n]((n-1)-) clusters shows that our proposed structures are consistent with experiment. We then compute the ion diffusion coefficients and find measures from small-cell DFT-MD simulations to be the correct order of magnitude, but influenced by small system size and short simulation length. Correcting for these errors with complementary PFF-MD simulations, we find DFT-MD measures to be in close agreement with experiment. Finally, we compute electrochemical windows from DFT computations on isolated ions, interacting cation/anion pairs, and liquid-phase systems with Li-doping. For the molecular-level computations, we generally find the difference between ionization energy and electron affinity from isolated ions and interacting cation/anion pairs to provide upper and lower bounds, respectively, to experiment. In the liquid phase, we find the difference between the lowest unoccupied and highest occupied electronic levels in pure and hybrid functionals to provide lower and upper bounds, respectively, to experiment. Li-doping in the liquid-phase systems results in electrochemical windows little changed from the neat systems.
