Abstract
The molecular structure and NIR and UV induced phototransformations of indazole-3-carboxylic acid were studied in low temperature argon and nitrogen matrices by FTIR spectroscopy and B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p) calculations. Eleven minima of IC were located on the S0 potential energy surface. The three most stable structures were detected experimentally in both matrices after deposition. Upon NIR irradiation a dominant process was rotamerization within the carboxylic group leading to changes in the population of the trans 1HIC1 and cis 1HIC2 forms. In turn, at UV irradiation at λ = 260 nm two new tautomers (2HIC2 and 2HIC3) were generated indicating that the hydrogen atom transfer in pyrazole ring took place. Based on the obtained kinetic curves, differences in the phototransformation rates in different matrices were indicated.

Abstract
Monomers of meta-fluorophenol (mFP) were trapped from the gas phase into cryogenic argon and nitrogen matrices. The estimated relative energies of the two conformers are very close, and in the gas phase they have nearly equal populations. Due to the similarity of their structures (they only differ in the orientation of the OH group), the two conformers have also similar predicted vibrational signatures, which makes the vibrational characterization of the individual rotamers challenging. In the present work, it has been established that in an argon matrix only the most stable trans conformer of mFP exists (the OH group pointing away from the fluorine atom). On the other hand, the IR spectrum of mFP in a nitrogen matrix testifies to the simultaneous presence in this matrix of both the trans conformer and of the higher-energy cis conformer (the OH group pointing toward the fluorine atom), which is stabilized by interaction with the matrix gas host. We found that the exposition of the cryogenic N2 matrix to the Globar source of the infrared spectrometer affects the conformational populations. By collecting experimental spectra, either in the full mid-infrared range or only in the range below 2200 cm-1, we were able to reliably distinguish two sets of experimental bands originating from individual conformers. A comparison of the two sets of experimental bands with computed infrared spectra of the conformers allowed, for the first time, the unequivocal vibrational identification of each of them. The joint implementation of computational vibrational spectroscopy and matrix-isolation infrared spectroscopy proved to be a very accurate method of structural analysis. Some mechanistic insights into conformational isomerism (the quantum tunneling of hydrogen atom and vibrationally-induced conformational transformations) have been addressed. Finally, we also subjected matrix-isolated mFP to irradiations with UV light, and the phototransformations observed in these experiments are also described.

Abstract
A decisive factor for obtaining high yields and selectivities in organic synthesis is the choice of the proper solvent. Solvent selection is often guided by the intuitive understanding of transition state-solvent interactions. However, quantum-mechanical tunneling can significantly contribute to chemical reactions, circumventing the transition state and thus depriving chemists of their intuitive handle on the reaction kinetics. In this Account, we aim to provide rationales for the effects of solvation on tunneling reactions derived from experiments performed in cryogenic matrices.The tunneling reactions analyzed here cover a broad range of prototypical organic transformations that are subject to strong solvation effects. Examples are the hydrogen tunneling probability for the cis-trans isomerization of formic acid which is strongly reduced upon formation of hydrogen-bonded complexes and the [1,2]H-shift in methylhydroxycarbene where a change in product selectivity is predicted upon interaction with hydrogen bond acceptors.Not only hydrogen but also heavy atom tunneling can exhibit strong solvent effects. The direction of the nearly degenerate valence tautomerization between benzene oxide and oxepin was found to reverse upon formation of a halogen or hydrogen bond with ICF3 or H2O. But even in the absence of strong noncovalent interactions such as hydrogen or halogen bonding, solvation can have a decisive effect on tunneling as evidenced by the Cope rearrangement of semibullvalenes via heavy-atom tunneling. Can quantum tunneling be catalyzed? The acceleration of the ring expansion of 1H-bicyclo[3.1.0.]-hexa-3,5-dien-2-one by complexation with Lewis acids provides a proof-of-concept for tunneling catalysis.Two concepts are central for the explanation and prediction of solvation effects on tunneling phenomena: a simple approach expands the Born-Oppenheimer approximation by separating nuclear degrees of freedom into intra- and intermolecular degrees. Intermolecular movements represent the slowest motions within molecular aggregates, thus effectively freezing the position of the solvent in relation to the reactant during the tunneling process. Another useful approach is to treat reactants and products by separate single-well potentials, where the intersection represents the transition state. Thus, stabilization of the reactants via solvation should result in an increase in barrier heights and widths which in turn lowers tunneling probabilities. These simple models can predict trends in tunneling kinetics and provide a rational basis for controlling tunneling reactions via solvation.

Abstract
The molecular geometries of the possible conformations of pyruvic acid–water complexes (PA-(H2O)n = 1–4) have been fully optimized at DFT/B3LYP/6-311G++ (d, p) levels of calculation. Among several optimized molecular clusters, we present here the most stable molecular arrangements obtained when one, two, three, and four water molecules are hydrogen-bonded to a central pyruvic acid molecule. Appropriate topological and geometrical parameters are considered primary indicators of H-bond strength. Atoms in molecules analysis shows that pyruvic acid can form a ring structure with water, and the molecular structures are stabilized by both strong O–H⋅⋅⋅O and C–H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen bonds. In large clusters, classical O–H⋅⋅⋅O hydrogen bonds still exist between water molecules, and a cage-like structure is built around some parts of the central molecule of pyruvic acid.

Abstract
Alpha-keto acids are environmentally and biologically relevant species whose chemistry has been shown to be influenced by their local environment. Vibrational spectroscopy provides useful ways to probe the potential inter- and intramolecular interactions available to them in several phases. We measure and compare the IR spectra of 2-oxo-octanoic acid (2OOA) in the gas phase, solid phase, and at the air-water interface. With theoretical support, we assign many of the vibrational modes in each of the spectra. In the gas phase, two types of conformers are identified and distinguished, with the intramolecularly H-bonded form being the dominant type, while the second conformer type identified does not have an intramolecular hydrogen bond. The van der Waals interactions between molecules in solid 2OOA manifest C-H and CO vibrations lower in energy than in the gas phase and we propose an intermolecular hydrogen bonding scheme for the solid phase. At the air-water interface the hydrocarbon tails of 2OOA do interact with each other while the carbonyls appear to interact with water in the subphase, but not with neighboring 2OOA as might be expected of a closely packed surfactant film.

Abstract
We demonstrate here that selective vibrational excitation of a moiety, remotely attached in relation to the molecular reaction site, might offer a generalized strategy for inducing bond-breaking/bond-forming reactions with exquisite precision. As a proof-of-principle, the electrocyclic ring-expansion of a benzazirine to a ketenimine was induced, in a cryogenic matrix, by near-IR light tuned at the overtone stretching frequency of its OH remote antenna. This accomplishment paves the way for harnessing IR vibrational excitation as a tool to guide a variety of molecular structure manipulations in an exceptional highly-selective manner.

Abstract
Torsional and rotational spectroscopic properties of pyruvic acid are determined using highly correlated ab initio methods and combining two different theoretical approaches: Second order perturbation theory and a variational procedure in three-dimensions. Four equilibrium geometries of pyruvic acid, Tc, Tt, Ct, and CC, outcome from a search with CCSD(T)-F12. All of them can be classified in the Cs point group. The variational calculations are performed considering the three internal rotation modes responsible for the non-rigidity as independent coordinates. More than 50 torsional energy levels (including torsional subcomponents) are localized in the 406-986 cm-1 region and represent excitations of the ν24 (skeletal torsion) and the ν23 (methyl torsion) modes. The third independent variable, the OH torsion, interacts strongly with ν23. The A1/E splitting of the ground vibrational state has been evaluated to be 0.024 cm-1 as it was expected given the high of the methyl torsional barrier (338 cm-1). A very good agreement with respect to previous experimental data concerning fundamental frequencies (νCAL - νEXP ~ 1 cm-1), and rotational parameters (B0CAL - B0EXP < 5 MHz), is obtained.

Abstract
Glyoxylic and pyruvic oxoacids are widely available in the atmosphere as gas-phase clusters and particles or in wet aerosols. In aqueous conditions, they undergo interconversion between the unhydrated oxo and gem-diol forms, where two hydroxyl groups replace the carbonyl group. We here examine the hydration equilibrium of glyoxylic and pyruvic acids with first-principles simulations in water at ambient conditions using ab initio metadynamics to reconstruct the corresponding free-energy landscapes. The main results are as follows: (i) our simulations reveal the high conformational diversity of these species in aqueous solutions. (ii) We show that gem-diol is strongly favored in water compared to its oxo counterpart by 29 and 16 kJ/mol for glyoxylic and pyruvic acids, respectively. (iii) From our atomic-scale simulations, we present new insights into the reaction mechanisms with a special focus on hydrogen-bond arrangements and the electronic structure of the transition state.

Abstract
The conformational behavior of carboxylic acids has attracted considerable attention, as it can be used as a gateway for the study of more complex phenomena. Here, we present an experimental and computational study of pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid (PCA) conformational space and the vibrational characterization of the compound by infrared spectroscopy. The possibility of promoting conformational transformations using selective vibrational excitation of the 2ν(OH) and 2ν(NH) stretching overtones is explored. Two conformers, exhibiting the cis configuration of the COOH group (O═C-O-H dihedral angle near 0°) and differing by the orientation of the carboxylic group with respect to the pyrrole ring (i.e., showing either a cis or a trans NCC═O arrangement), were found to coexist initially for the compound isolated in a cryogenic nitrogen matrix, in an 86:14 ratio, and were characterized by infrared spectroscopy. A third conformer, with the COOH group in the trans configuration, was produced, in situ, by narrowband near-infrared (NIR) excitation of the most stable PCA form (with a cis NCC═O moiety). The photogenerated PCA conformer was found to decay back to the most stable PCA form, by H-atom quantum mechanical tunneling, with a characteristic half-life time of ∼10 min in the nitrogen matrix at 10 K. Tunneling rates were theoretically estimated and compared for the observed isomerization of pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid and for the structurally similar furan-2-carboxylic acid. This comparison showcases the effect of small modifications in the potential energy surface and the implications of quantum tunneling for the stability of short-living species.

Abstract
Recent developments of low-temperature techniques are providing valuable knowledge about chemical processes that manifest in the quantum regimen. The tunneling effect from the vibrational ground-state is the main mechanism of these reactions, which usually involves the motion or transfer of hydrogen atoms. Theoretical methods can enrich the information supplied by these experimental methods through an insightful analysis of the tunneling process. In this context, canonical variational transition state theory with multidimensional tunneling corrections (CVT/MT) can handle this type of reaction, and it has been applied to several systems within the small-curvature approximation for tunneling (SCT). This method is of proven reliability for polyatomic reactions occurring at room temperature and above, but no tests have been performed to check its performance when only the lowest energy level is populated. In this work, we compare SCT against the least-action tunneling (LAT) method to study the tautomerization and cis-trans interconversion reactions in the enol forms of urea, thiourea, and selenourea. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that the LAT method is applied to a polyatomic reaction occurring in the deep-tunneling region. The theoretical results indicate that the reaction mechanisms are controlled by tunneling. The SCT and LAT tautomerization reaction times are in good agreement with the experimental values; however, LAT seems superior to SCT for reactions (tautomerizations) that involve moderate reaction path curvature, whereas the opposite is true for reactions with small curvature (interconversions). These results led us to introduce and recommend the microcanonically optimized tunneling path that selects the tunneling probability as the maximum between the SCT and LAT tunneling probabilities.

Abstract
Infrared vibrational excitation is a promising approach for gaining exceptional control of chemical reactions, in ways that cannot be attained via thermal or electronic excitation. Here, we report an unprecedented example of a bond-breaking/bond-forming reaction by vibrational excitation under matrix isolation conditions. Thiotropolone monomers were isolated in cryogenic argon matrices and characterized by infrared spectroscopy and vibrational computations (harmonic and anharmonic). Narrowband near-infrared irradiations tuned at frequencies of first CH stretching overtone (5940 cm-1) or combination modes (5980 cm-1) of the OH tautomer, the sole form of the compound that exists in the as-deposited matrices, led to its conversion into the SH tautomer. The tautomerization in the reverse direction was achieved by vibrational excitation of the SH tautomer with irradiation at 5947 or 5994 cm-1, corresponding to the frequencies of its CH stretching combination and overtone modes. This pioneer demonstration of bidirectional hydroxyl ↔ thiol tautomerization controlled by vibrational excitation creates prospects for new advances in vibrationally induced chemistry.

Abstract
Three energetically close pairs of vibrational states in glycolic acid are investigated by Raman spectroscopy in a supersonic jet to provide challenging benchmarks for vibrational and electronic structure theory and to solve some open issues in this prototypical hydroxy acid. The alcoholic OH stretching fundamental is located only 8 cm-1 below the acidic OH stretch at 3586 cm-1, much less shifted than predicted by previous anharmonic calculations and by experimental analogy to a fluorene derivative. This and further near-degeneracies in the CH and C=O stretching region are used to assess the predictive power of an exploratory set of quantum chemical calculations including anharmonic VPT2 corrections.

Abstract
Vibrational excitation using frequency-tunable IR laser light has been developed as a powerful tool for selective manipulation of molecular conformations. In this methodology, vibrational excitation has been typically applied to the first stretching overtones (∼80 kJ mol-1) but also to the fundamental modes (∼40 kJ mol-1). Here, we demonstrate that selective conformational isomerizations are also achieved using excitation to second stretching overtones (∼120 kJ mol-1). The extremely weak absorptions of the second stretching overtones of molecules isolated in low-temperature matrices were measured for the first time; here using three prototype molecules: hydroxyacetone (HA), glycolic acid (GAc) and glycolamide (GAm). Benchmarking of computed anharmonic IR spectra showed that the B3LYP/SNSD method provides the best agreement with experimental frequencies of the ν(OH), 2ν(OH) and 3ν(OH) modes for the studied molecules in argon matrices. Selective irradiation at the 3ν(OH) frequencies (9850-10 500 cm-1) of HA, GAc and GAm monomers in argon matrices at 15 K successfully triggers their conformational isomerization. These results open the door to extend control over conformations separated by higher barriers and to induce other transformations not energetically accessible by excitation to the fundamental or first stretching overtone modes.

Abstract
Three low-energy isomers of 9-methylguanine, the amino-oxo (AO) form and two amino-hydroxy (AH1 and AH2) conformers, were trapped from the gas phase into low-temperature argon matrices. The AH1 and AH2 isomers, differing in the orientation of the OH group, were found to transform into each other upon excitation with near-IR light. The population of the AO form of the compound was not changed upon any near-IR irradiation of the matrix samples. Using monochromatic near-IR light, generated by a frequency-tunable laser source, it was possible to selectively induce the AH1 → AH2 or AH2 → AH1 conversion. Photoreversibility of this conformational transformation was then demonstrated. Exposure of matrix-isolated monomers of 9-methylguanine to broadband near-IR light also led to conformational conversions within the amino-hydroxy tautomeric form; the final stage of this process was always the same photostationary state independent of the initial ratio of AH1 and AH2 populations. Spontaneous conformational conversion, transforming the higher-energy AH2 form into the lower-energy AH1 isomer, was observed for matrix-isolated monomers of 9-methylguanine kept in the dark. The mechanism of this process must rely on quantum tunneling of the light hydrogen atom. Irradiation of matrix-isolated 9-methylguanine with UV laser light at λ = 288 or 285 nm led to a substantial consumption of the two AH forms, while the amount of AO isomer remained unchanged. On the other hand, a decrease in the population of the AO isomer occurred upon excitations at shorter wavelengths, λ = 280 or 275 nm. The spectral changes observed after UV-irradiation suggest the generation (and stabilization in the matrix) of a radical species, resulting from the photocleavage of the O-H or N1-H bonds, in the AH or AO isomer, respectively.

Abstract
Structural changes of glycolic acid (GA) complex with nitrogen induced by selective overtone excitation of the νOH mode were followed in argon matrices using FTIR spectroscopy. For the most stable SSC1 complex present in different trapping sites directly upon deposition site, selective changes in the νOH region were achieved upon near-infrared irradiation. Simultaneously, new conformers of the GA…N2 complex were formed, giving rise to several sets of bands in the νOH and νC=O regions of the spectra. Both position and intensity of new absorptions appeared to be highly sensitive on the wavelength of radiation used, as well as on the annealing of the matrix. Based on theoretical calculations at different levels of theory, an assignment of the observed bands is proposed and discussed.

Abstract
Conformational changes of the monomeric safrole (5-(2-propenyl)-1,3-benzodioxole) isolated in low temperature xenon matrices were induced thermally or using narrow-band UV radiation. The rotation of the allyl group taking place in the studied matrices was followed by FTIR spectroscopy. Safrole represents a challenging example of a flexible molecule highlighting the importance of dispersion interactions and anharmonic effects in the structural, spectroscopic and energetic analysis. Structures of the safrole conformers, their energetics and infrared spectra have been calculated using various computational methods ranging from density functional theory (DFT) to coupled cluster (CC). The best theoretical results were obtained by integrating CCSD(T) energies including complete basis set extrapolation and core-valence corrections with B2PLYP-D3 equilibrium structures and hybrid B2PLYP-D3/B3LYP-D3 anharmonic computations for IR spectra and thermodynamics.

Abstract
Near-infrared (near-IR) narrowband selective vibrational excitation and annealing of gallic acid (3,4,5-trihydroxybenzoic acid) isolated in cryogenic matrices were used to induce interconversions between its most stable conformers. The isomerizations were probed by infrared spectroscopy. An extensive set of quantum chemical calculations, carried out at the DFT(B3LYP)/6-311++G(d,p) level of approximation, was used to undertake a detailed analysis of the ground state potential energy surface of the molecule. This investigation of the molecule conformational space allowed extracting mechanistic insights into the observed annealing- or near-IR-induced isomerization processes. The infrared spectra of the two most stable conformers of gallic acid in N2, Xe, and Ar matrices were fully assigned. Finally, the UV-induced photochemistry of the matrix isolated compound was investigated.

Abstract
Conformational changes induced thermally or upon infrared excitation of matrix-isolated 6-methoxyindole were investigated. Narrowband near-infrared excitation of the first overtone of the N-H stretching vibration of each one of the two identified conformers is found to induce a selective large-scale conversion of the pumped conformer into the other one. This easily controllable bidirectional process consists in the intramolecular reorientation of the methoxy group and allowed a full assignment of the infrared spectra of the two conformers. Matrices with different conformational compositions prepared by narrow-band irradiations were subsequently used to investigate the effects of both thermal and broadband infrared excitations on the conformational mixtures. Particular attention is given to the influence of the matrix medium (Ar vs. Xe) and conformational effects of exposition of the sample to the spectrometer light source during the measurements.

Abstract
On going developments of hardware and software are changing computational spectroscopy from a strongly specialized research area to a general tool in the inventory of most researchers. Increased interactions between experimentally-oriented users and theoretically-oriented developers of new methods and models would result in more robust, flexible and reliable tools and studies for the systems of increasing complexity, which are of current scientific and technological interest. This is the philosophy behind this review, which presents the development of a so-called virtual multi-frequency spectrometer (VMS) including state-of-the-art approaches in a user-friendly frame. The current status of the VMS tool will be illustrated by a number of case studies with special reference to infrared and UV-vis regions of the electro-magnetic spectrum including also chiral spectroscopies. Only the basic theoretical background will be provided avoiding explicit equations as far as possible, and pointing out the most recent advancements beyond the standard rigid-rotor harmonic-oscillator model coupled to vertical electronic excitation energies.

Abstract
The aim of this paper is 2-fold. First, we want to report the extension of our virtual multifrequency spectrometer (VMS) to anharmonic intensities for Raman optical activity (ROA) with the full inclusion of first- and second-order resonances for both frequencies and intensities in the framework of the generalized second-order vibrational perturbation theory (GVPT2) for all kinds of vibrational spectroscopies. Then, from a more general point of view, we want to present and validate the performance of VMS for the parallel analysis of different vibrational spectra for medium-sized molecules (IR, Raman, VCD, ROA) including both mechanical and electric/magnetic anharmonicity. For the well-known methyloxirane benchmark, careful selection of density functional, basis set, and resonance thresholds permitted us to reach qualitative and quantitative agreement between experimental and computed band positions and shapes. Next, the whole series of halogenated azetidinones is analyzed, showing that it is now possible to interpret different spectra in terms of mass, electronegativity, polarizability, and hindrance variation between closely related substituents, chiral spectroscopies being particular effective in this connection.

CC/DFT Route toward Accurate Structures and Spectroscopic Features for Observed and Elusive Conformers of Flexible Molecules: Pyruvic Acid as a Case Study. J Chem Theory Comput 2015; 11:4342-63. Abstract
The structures and relative stabilities as well as the rotational and vibrational spectra of the three low-energy conformers of pyruvic acid (PA) have been characterized using a state-of-the-art quantum-mechanical approach designed for flexible molecules. By making use of the available experimental rotational constants for several isotopologues of the most stable PA conformer, Tc-PA, the semiexperimental equilibrium structure has been derived. The latter provides a reference for the pure theoretical determination of the equilibrium geometries for all conformers, thus confirming for these structures an accuracy of 0.001 Å and 0.1 deg for bond lengths and angles, respectively. Highly accurate relative energies of all conformers (Tc-, Tt-, and Ct-PA) and of the transition states connecting them are provided along with the thermodynamic properties at low and high temperatures, thus leading to conformational enthalpies accurate to 1 kJ mol(-1). Concerning microwave spectroscopy, rotational constants accurate to about 20 MHz are provided for the Tt- and Ct-PA conformers, together with the computed centrifugal-distortion constants and dipole moments required to simulate their rotational spectra. For Ct-PA, vibrational frequencies in the mid-infrared region accurate to 10 cm(-1) are reported along with theoretical estimates for the transitions in the near-infrared range, and the corresponding infrared spectrum including fundamental transitions, overtones, and combination bands has been simulated. In addition to the new data described above, theoretical results for the Tc- and Tt-PA conformers are compared with all available experimental data to further confirm the accuracy of the hybrid coupled-cluster/density functional theory (CC/DFT) protocol applied in the present study. Finally, we discuss in detail the accuracy of computational models fully based on double-hybrid DFT functionals (mainly at the B2PLYP/aug-cc-pVTZ level) that avoid the use of very expensive CC calculations.
