Relatively Selective Production of the Simplest Criegee Intermediate in a CH4/O2 Electric Discharge: Kinetic Analysis of a Plausible Mechanism

Electronic Absorption Spectroscopy and Photochemistry of Criegee Intermediates

Interest in Criegee intermediates (CIs), often termed carbonyl oxides, and their role in tropospheric chemistry has grown massively since the demonstration of laboratory-based routes to their formation and characterization in the gas phase. This article reviews current knowledge regarding the electronic spectroscopy of atmospherically relevant CIs like CH₂ OO, CH₃ CHOO, (CH₃ )₂ COO and larger CIs like methyl vinyl ketone oxide and methacrolein oxide that are formed in the ozonolysis of isoprene, and of selected conjugated carbene-derived CIs of interest in the synthetic chemistry community. Of the aforementioned atmospherically relevant CIs, all except CH₂ OO and (CH₃ )₂ COO exist in different conformers which, under tropospheric conditions, can display strikingly different thermal loss rates via unimolecular and bimolecular processes. Calculated photolysis rates based on their absorption properties suggest that solar photolysis will rarely be a significant contributor to the total loss rate for any CI under tropospheric conditions. Nonetheless, there is ever-growing interest in the absorption cross sections and primary photochemistry of CIs following excitation to the strongly absorbing ¹ ππ* state, and how this varies with CI, with conformer and with excitation wavelength. The later part of this review surveys the photochemical data reported to date, including a range of studies that demonstrate prompt photo-induced fission of the terminal O-O bond, and speculates about possible alternate decay processes that could occur following non-adiabatic coupling to, and dissociation from, highly internally excited levels of the electronic ground state of a CI.

Photodissociation Dynamics of CH2OO on Multiple Potential Energy Surfaces: Experiment and Theory

UV excitation of the CH₂OO Criegee intermediate across most of the broad span of the (B ¹A')-(X ¹A') spectrum results in prompt dissociation to two energetically accessible asymptotes: O (¹D) + H₂CO (X ¹A₁) and O (³P) + H₂CO (a ³A''). Dissociation proceeds on multiple singlet potential energy surfaces that are coupled by two regions of conical intersection (CoIn). Velocity map imaging (VMI) studies reveal a bimodal total kinetic energy release (TKER) distribution for the O (¹D) + H₂CO (X ¹A₁) products with the major and minor components accounting for ca. 40% and ca. 20% on average of the available energy (E_avl), respectively. The unexpected low TKER component corresponds to highly internally excited H₂CO (X ¹A₁) products accommodating ca. 80% of E_avl. Full dimensional trajectory calculations suggest that the bimodal TKER distribution of the O (¹D) + H₂CO (X ¹A₁) products originates from two different dynamical pathways: a primary pathway (69%) evolving through one CoIn region to products and a smaller component (20%) sampling both CoIn regions enroute to products. Those that access both CoIn regions likely give rise to the more highly internally excited H₂CO (X ¹A₁) products. The remaining trajectories (11%) dissociate to O (³P) + H₂CO (a ³A'') products after traversing through both CoIn regions. The complementary experimental and theoretical investigation provides insight on the photodissociation of CH₂OO via multiple dissociation pathways through two regions of CoIn that control the branching and energy distributions of products.

Directed Gas-Phase Formation of the Germaniumsilylene Butterfly Molecule (Ge(μ-H2)Si)

The hitherto elusive dibridged germaniumsilylene molecule (Ge(μ-H₂)Si) has been formed for the first time via the bimolecular gas-phase reaction of ground-state germanium atoms (Ge) with silane (SiH₄) under single-collision conditions. Merged with state-of-the-art electronic structure calculations, the reaction was found to proceed through initial formation of a van der Waals complex in the entrance channel, insertion of the germanium into a silicon-hydrogen bond, intersystem crossing from the triplet to the singlet surface, hydrogen migrations, and eventually elimination of molecular hydrogen via a tight exit transition state, leading to the germaniumsilylene "butterfly". This investigation provides an extraordinary peek at the largely unknown silicon-germanium chemistry on the molecular level and sheds light on the essential nonadiabatic reaction dynamics of germanium and silicon, which are quite distinct from those of the isovalent carbon system, thus offering crucial insights that reveal exotic chemistry and intriguing chemical bonding in the germanium-silicon system on the most fundamental, microscopic level.

Criegee intermediates and their impacts on the troposphere

Criegee intermediates (CIs), carbonyl oxides formed in ozonolysis of alkenes, play key roles in the troposphere. The decomposition of CIs can be a significant source of OH to the tropospheric oxidation cycle especially during nighttime and winter months. A variety of model-measurement studies have estimated surface-level stabilized Criegee intermediate (sCI) concentrations on the order of 1 × 10⁴ cm^-3 to 1 × 10⁵ cm^-3, which makes a non-negligible contribution to the oxidising capacity in the terrestrial boundary layer. The reactions of sCI with the water monomer and the water dimer have been found to be the most important bimolecular reactions to the tropospheric sCI loss rate, at least for the smallest carbonyl oxides; the products from these reactions (e.g. hydroxymethyl hydroperoxide, HMHP) are also of importance to the atmospheric oxidation cycle. The sCI can oxidise SO₂ to form SO₃, which can go on to form a significant amount of H₂SO₄ which is a key atmospheric nucleation species and therefore vital to the formation of clouds. The sCI can also react with carboxylic acids, carbonyl compounds, alcohols, peroxy radicals and hydroperoxides, and the products of these reactions are likely to be highly oxygenated species, with low vapour pressures, that can lead to nucleation and SOA formation over terrestrial regions.

Detection and structural characterization of nitrosamide H2NNO: A central intermediate in deNOx processes

The structure and bonding of H₂NNO, the simplest N-nitrosamine, and a key intermediate in deNO_x processes, have been precisely characterized using a combination of rotational spectroscopy of its more abundant isotopic species and high-level quantum chemical calculations. Isotopic spectroscopy provides compelling evidence that this species is formed promptly in our discharge expansion via the NH₂ + NO reaction and is collisionally cooled prior to subsequent unimolecular rearrangement. H₂NNO is found to possess an essentially planar geometry, an NNO angle of 113.67(5)°, and a N-N bond length of 1.342(3) Å; in combination with the derived nitrogen quadrupole coupling constants, its bonding is best described as an admixture of uncharged dipolar (H₂N-N=O, single bond) and zwitterion (H₂N⁺=N-O^-, double bond) structures. At the CCSD(T) level, and extrapolating to the complete basis set limit, the planar geometry appears to represent the minimum of the potential surface, although the torsional potential of this molecule is extremely flat.

The reaction of methyl peroxy and hydroxyl radicals as a major source of atmospheric methanol

Methyl peroxy, a key radical in tropospheric chemistry, was recently shown to react with the hydroxyl radical at an unexpectedly high rate. Here, the molecular reaction mechanisms are elucidated using high-level quantum chemical methodologies and statistical rate theory. Formation of activated methylhydrotrioxide, followed by dissociation into methoxy and hydroperoxy radicals, is found to be the main reaction pathway, whereas methylhydrotrioxide stabilization and methanol formation (from activated and stabilized methylhydrotrioxide) are viable minor channels. Criegee intermediate formation is found to be negligible. Given the theoretical uncertainties, useful constraints on the yields are provided by atmospheric methanol measurements. Using a global chemistry-transport model, we show that the only explanation for the high observed methanol abundances over remote oceans is the title reaction with an overall methanol yield of ∼30%, consistent with the theoretical estimates given their uncertainties. This makes the title reaction a major methanol source (115 Tg per year), comparable to global terrestrial emissions.

Production of and Dissociative Electron Attachment to the Simplest Criegee Intermediate in an Afterglow

The simplest Criegee intermediate, CH2OO, has been produced in a flowing afterglow using a novel technique. CH2I is produced by dissociative electron attachment to CH2I2, leading to the established reaction CH2I + O2 → CH2OO + I. The presence of CH2OO is established by observation of dissociative electron attachment to yield O(-) using the variable electron and neutral density attachment mass spectrometry (VENDAMS) technique. The measurements establish the electron attachment rate coefficient of thermal electrons at 300 K to CH2OO as 1.2 ± 0.3 × 10(-8) cm(3) s(-1). Thermal electron attachment is solely dissociative and is not a promising route to producing stable CH2OO(-). The results open the possibility of measuring ion-molecule chemistry involving Criegee intermediates, as well as the reactivity of other unstable radicals produced in an analogous manner.
