Abstract
Conformational space of methoxyacetone (MA) was studied at the MP2/6-311++G(d,p) and DFT(B3LYP)/6-311++G(d,p) levels of theory. Computations predict MA to adopt four conformations, resulting from internal rotations around the O=C-C-O (Trans, Cis) and C-C-O-C (trans, gauche) dihedral angles. The Tt (Trans-trans) conformer is the most stable. The computed energies of two gauche (Tg and Cg) conformers fall in the 3-8 kJ mol-1 range above Tt and should account for 1/3 of the room-temperature gas-phase equilibrium. The energy of Ct form is 11 kJ mol-1 above Tt, and its expected population is negligible (below 1 %). In our earlier work, MA monomers were isolated in cryogenic argon matrices and characterized by infrared spectroscopy. In the experiment, only the most stable Tt conformer was detected in the sample. Signatures of the other conformers were not detected, either in freshly deposited samples, or in samples subjected to different UV irradiations. We rationalize those observations in terms of computed barriers for intramolecular torsions, indicating occurrence of conformational cooling during deposition. The experimental infrared spectrum of the Tt form is now assigned with the aid of anharmonic DFT computations. Exposure of MA to UV irradiation in the 300-260 nm range led to photolysis, according to the Norrish type II mechanism, resulting in dimer between enol acetone and formaldehyde observed as a cage-confined intermediate photoproduct. The subsequent photolysis resulted in the formation of carbon monoxide as the dominating photoproduct, formed in the Norrish type I photoreaction. Mechanistic interpretation of this photo decarbonylation reaction is presented.

Abstract
The use of static electronic structure calculations to compute solution-phase pKas offers a great advantage in that a macroscopic bulk property could be computed via microscopic computations involving very few molecules. There are various sources of errors in the quantum chemical calculations though. Overcoming these errors to accurately compute pKas of a plethora of acids is an active area of research in physical chemistry pursued by both computational as well as experimental chemists. We recently developed the pK-Yay method in our attempt to accurately compute aqueous pKas of strong and weak acids. The method is fully black-box, computationally inexpensive, and is very easy for even a nonexpert to use. However, the method was thus far tested on very few molecules (only 16 in all). Herein, in order to assess the future applicability of pK-Yay, we study the effect of multiple conformers, the presence of tautomers under equilibrium, and the impact of a wide variety of functional groups (derivatives of acetic acid with substituents at various positions, dicarboxylic acids, aromatic carboxylic acids, amines and amides, phenols and thiols, and fluorine bearing organic acids). Starting with more than 1000 conformers and tautomers, this study establishes that overall errors of ∼ 1.0 pKa units are routinely obtained for a majority of the molecules. Larger errors are noted in cases where multiple charges, intramolecular hydrogen bonding, and several ionizable functional groups are simultaneously present. An important conclusion to emerge from this work is that, the computed pKas are insensitive (difference <0.5) to whether we consider multiple conformers/tautomers or only choose the most stable conformer/tautomer. Further, pK-Yay captures the stereoelectronic effects arising due to differing axial vs equatorial pattern, and is useful to predict the dominant acid-base equilibrium in a system featuring several equilibria. Overall, pK-Yay may be employed in several chemical applications featuring organic molecules and biomonomers.

Abstract
The molecular structure and NIR and UV induced phototransformations of indazole-3-carboxylic acid were studied in low temperature argon and nitrogen matrices by FTIR spectroscopy and B3LYP/6-311++G(2d,2p) calculations. Eleven minima of IC were located on the S0 potential energy surface. The three most stable structures were detected experimentally in both matrices after deposition. Upon NIR irradiation a dominant process was rotamerization within the carboxylic group leading to changes in the population of the trans 1HIC1 and cis 1HIC2 forms. In turn, at UV irradiation at λ = 260 nm two new tautomers (2HIC2 and 2HIC3) were generated indicating that the hydrogen atom transfer in pyrazole ring took place. Based on the obtained kinetic curves, differences in the phototransformation rates in different matrices were indicated.

Abstract
Structural and tunneling properties of the 2-furoic acid (FA) monomer and dimer were investigated using rotational spectroscopy and DFT calculations. CREST, a conformational ensemble space exploration tool, was used to identify all possible low energy conformations of the FA monomer and dimer, followed by the DFT geometry optimization and harmonic frequency calculations. Broadband rotational spectra in the 2-6 GHz and in the 8-12 GHz regions were recorded in a supersonic jet expansion. The monomeric FA was found to exist dominantly as three different conformers: I , II , and III in a jet, with I and II taking on the trans -COOH configuration while III having the cis -COOH configuration. For the FA dimer, only the I - II conformer was observed experimentally, whereas the symmetric I - I and II - II conformers were not observed because of their zero dipole moments. The analysis of the splittings in the rotational transitions of I - II allowed one to extract the tunneling splitting to be 1056.0(12) MHz. The barrier height was determined to be ~442 cm -1 using the scaled potential energy scans at several different levels of theory.

Abstract
In this article, IR-induced and tunneling-driven reactions observed in cryogenic matrices are described in a historical perspective, the entangling of the two types of processes being highlighted. The story of this still ongoing fascinating scientific endeavor is presented here following closely our own involvement in the field for more than 30 years, and thus focuses mostly on our work. It is, because of this reason, also an incomplete story. Nevertheless, it considers a large range of examples, from very selective IR-induced conformational isomerizations to IR-induced bond-breaking/bond-forming reactions and successful observations of rare heavy atom tunneling processes. As a whole, this article provides a rather general overview of the major progress achieved in the field.

Abstract
The conformational behavior of carboxylic acids has attracted considerable attention, as it can be used as a gateway for the study of more complex phenomena. Here, we present an experimental and computational study of pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid (PCA) conformational space and the vibrational characterization of the compound by infrared spectroscopy. The possibility of promoting conformational transformations using selective vibrational excitation of the 2ν(OH) and 2ν(NH) stretching overtones is explored. Two conformers, exhibiting the cis configuration of the COOH group (O═C-O-H dihedral angle near 0°) and differing by the orientation of the carboxylic group with respect to the pyrrole ring (i.e., showing either a cis or a trans NCC═O arrangement), were found to coexist initially for the compound isolated in a cryogenic nitrogen matrix, in an 86:14 ratio, and were characterized by infrared spectroscopy. A third conformer, with the COOH group in the trans configuration, was produced, in situ, by narrowband near-infrared (NIR) excitation of the most stable PCA form (with a cis NCC═O moiety). The photogenerated PCA conformer was found to decay back to the most stable PCA form, by H-atom quantum mechanical tunneling, with a characteristic half-life time of ∼10 min in the nitrogen matrix at 10 K. Tunneling rates were theoretically estimated and compared for the observed isomerization of pyrrole-2-carboxylic acid and for the structurally similar furan-2-carboxylic acid. This comparison showcases the effect of small modifications in the potential energy surface and the implications of quantum tunneling for the stability of short-living species.

Abstract
We report a dissociative electron attachment study to 2-furoic acid (C5H4O3) isolated in a gas phase, which is a model molecule consisting of a carboxylic group and a furan ring. Dissociation of furan by low energy electrons is accessible only via electronic excited Feshbach resonances at energies of incident electrons above 5 eV. On the other hand, carboxylic acids are well-known to dissociate via attachment of electrons at subexcitation energies. Here we elucidate how the electron and proton transfer reactions induced by carboxylation influence stability of the furan ring. Overlap of the furan and carboxyl π orbitals results in transformation of the nondissociative π2 resonance of the furan ring to a dissociative resonance. The interpretation of hydrogen transfer reactions is supported by experimental studies of 3-methyl-2-furoic and 5-methyl-2-furoic acids (C6H6O3) and density functional theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract
Three low-energy isomers of 9-methylguanine, the amino-oxo (AO) form and two amino-hydroxy (AH1 and AH2) conformers, were trapped from the gas phase into low-temperature argon matrices. The AH1 and AH2 isomers, differing in the orientation of the OH group, were found to transform into each other upon excitation with near-IR light. The population of the AO form of the compound was not changed upon any near-IR irradiation of the matrix samples. Using monochromatic near-IR light, generated by a frequency-tunable laser source, it was possible to selectively induce the AH1 → AH2 or AH2 → AH1 conversion. Photoreversibility of this conformational transformation was then demonstrated. Exposure of matrix-isolated monomers of 9-methylguanine to broadband near-IR light also led to conformational conversions within the amino-hydroxy tautomeric form; the final stage of this process was always the same photostationary state independent of the initial ratio of AH1 and AH2 populations. Spontaneous conformational conversion, transforming the higher-energy AH2 form into the lower-energy AH1 isomer, was observed for matrix-isolated monomers of 9-methylguanine kept in the dark. The mechanism of this process must rely on quantum tunneling of the light hydrogen atom. Irradiation of matrix-isolated 9-methylguanine with UV laser light at λ = 288 or 285 nm led to a substantial consumption of the two AH forms, while the amount of AO isomer remained unchanged. On the other hand, a decrease in the population of the AO isomer occurred upon excitations at shorter wavelengths, λ = 280 or 275 nm. The spectral changes observed after UV-irradiation suggest the generation (and stabilization in the matrix) of a radical species, resulting from the photocleavage of the O-H or N1-H bonds, in the AH or AO isomer, respectively.

Abstract
The analysis of the possible conformers and the conformational change between solid and liquid states of a particular drug molecule are mandatory not only for describing reliably its spectroscopical properties but also for understanding the interaction with the receptor and its mechanism of action. Therefore, here we investigated the free-energy conformational landscape of levetiracetam (LEV) in gas phase as well as in water and ethanol, aiming to describe the 3-dimensional structure and energetic stability of its conformers. Twenty-two unique conformers were identified, and their energetic stability was determined at density functional theory B3LYP/6-31+G(2d,2p) level of theory. The 6 most stable monomers in water, within a relative free-energy window of 0.71 kcal mol-1 and clearly separated in energy from the remaining subset of 16 conformers, as well as the 3 most stable dimers were then used to compute the Boltzmann populations-averaged UV-Vis and NMR spectra of LEV. The conformational landscape in solution is distinctly different from that corresponding to gas phase, particularly due to the relative orientations of the butanamide group. Aiming to clarify the stability of the possible dimers of LEV, we also investigated computationally the structure of a set of 11 nonhydrated and hydrated homochiral hydrogen-bonded LEV dimers.

Abstract
Conformational changes induced thermally or upon infrared excitation of matrix-isolated 6-methoxyindole were investigated. Narrowband near-infrared excitation of the first overtone of the N-H stretching vibration of each one of the two identified conformers is found to induce a selective large-scale conversion of the pumped conformer into the other one. This easily controllable bidirectional process consists in the intramolecular reorientation of the methoxy group and allowed a full assignment of the infrared spectra of the two conformers. Matrices with different conformational compositions prepared by narrow-band irradiations were subsequently used to investigate the effects of both thermal and broadband infrared excitations on the conformational mixtures. Particular attention is given to the influence of the matrix medium (Ar vs. Xe) and conformational effects of exposition of the sample to the spectrometer light source during the measurements.
