Abstract
A family of stilbenyl-azopyrroles compounds 2a-d and 3a-d was efficiently obtained via a Mizoroki-Heck C-C-type coupling reaction between 2-(4'-iodophenyl-azo)-N-methyl pyrrole (1a) and different vinyl precursors. The influence of the π-conjugated backbone and the effect of the pyrrole moiety were correlated with their optical properties. Studies via UV-Visible spectrophotometry revealed that the inclusion of EWG or EDG favors a red-shift of the main absorption band in these azo compounds compared with their non-substituted analogues. Furthermore, there is a clear influence between the half-life of the Z isomer formed by irradiation with white light and the push-pull behavior of the molecules. In several cases, the stilbenyl-azopyrroles led to the formation of J-type aggregates in binary MeOH : H2O solvents, which are of interest for water compatible applications.

Abstract
The functionalization of π-conjugated scaffolds with sterically demanding substituents is a widely used tactic to suppress cofacial (H-type) stacking interactions, which may even inhibit self-assembly. Contrary to expectations, we demonstrate herein that increasing steric effects can result in an enhanced thermodynamic stability of H-type supramolecular polymers. In our approach, we have investigated two boron dipyrromethene (BODIPY) dyes with bulky phenyl (2) and mesityl (3) meso-substituents and compared their self-assembly in nonpolar media with that of a parent meso-methyl BODIPY 1 lacking bulky groups. While the enhanced steric demand induces pathway complexity, the superior thermodynamic stability of the H-type pathways can be rationalized in terms of additional enthalpic gain arising from intermolecular C-H⋅⋅⋅F-B interactions of the orthogonally arranged aromatic substituents, which overrule their inherent steric demand. Our findings underline the importance of balancing competing non-covalent interactions in self-assembly.

Abstract
Two novel phthalonitrile derivatives, bearing two hexyloxy groups and a benzodioxin (or a naphthodioxin) annulated ring, along with their corresponding metal-free phthalocyanines (H2Pc) were prepared. FT-IR, mass, electronic absorption, 1H NMR, and 13C NMR spectroscopy were employed for the characterization of all compounds. The effect of hexadeca substituents on the photophysical properties of metal-free Pcs was investigated. Photophysical properties of H2Pc were studied in tetrahydrofuran (THF). Fluorescent quantum yields of phthalocyanines (Pcs) were calculated and compared with the unsubstituted phthalocyanine. 1,4-Benzoquinone effectively quenched the fluorescence of these compounds in THF. Cyclic and square wave voltammetry methods were applied to metal-free phthalocyanines and Pc-centered oxidation and reduction processes were obtained.

Abstract
A novel poly(arylene ether) with azo-coupled cobalt phthalocyanine in the side chain (PAE-azo-CoPc) was prepared by 1,2-benzodinitrile, anhydrous cobaltous chloride and a novel azobenzene-containing poly(aryl ether) (PAE-azo-DCN) via a nucleophilic substitution polycondensation based on a novel bisfluoro monomer, 4-[(3,4-cyanophenyl)diazenyl]phenyl-2,6-difluorobenzoate. The obtained polymers were characterized and evaluated by FT-IR, 1H NMR, DSC and TGA. PAE-azo-CoPc exhibited higher glass transition temperature and better thermal stability than PAE-azo-DCN because of the introduction of cobalt phthalocyanine groups. The results of Z-scan measurements demonstrated that PAE-azo-CoPc showed reversible saturable absorption and positive refraction, and PAE-azo-DCN showed saturable absorption and negative refraction. By calculation, PAE-azo-CoPc exhibited larger third-order nonlinear optical susceptibilities than that of PAE-azo-DCN. The results of optical limiting measurements demonstrated that the PAE-azo-CoPc exhibited an excellent optical limiting response. A novel poly(arylene ether) with azo-coupled cobalt phthalocyanine in the side chain was prepared by 1,2-benzodinitrile, anhydrous cobaltous chloride and a novel azobenzene-containing poly(aryl ether).![]()

Abstract
AbstractThe requirement for materials which exhibit good second and third order non-linear optical properties and also for materials which could sense metals in trace quantities has kindled renewed investigations. Organometallics and coordination compounds show a lot of promise as new NLO materials combining the variety of organic moieties with the strength and variable oxidation states of metals. Especially ligands which selectively detect industrial pollutants like Cd and biologically significant metals like Zn are necessary. In the current work the ligand 1,10-phenanthroline-2,9-di(carboxaldehyde phenylhydrazone) (L) and its Ni2+, Co2+, Fe2+, Zn2+, Cd2+ and Ir3+ complexes were synthesized. These were characterized by UV-Vis, FT-IR, 1H NMR, MS and CHN microanalysis techniques. The complexes were shown to have the formula [ML]2+. The second and third order NLO of the ligand and its complexes were recorded These new compounds were found to have same order of third order nonlinear optical susceptibility as that of CS2 and their second hyperpolarizability was an order of magnitude greater than that of C60. Furthermore the ligand also displays selective luminescence sensing of metals ions Fe2+ and Ir3+ even in the presence of other metal ions.

Abstract
Here, we present the investigations of photo-isomerization behavior and the nonlinear optical properties of azobenzene derivative LB films. The few-layer LB films of AOB-t4 and BNB-t4 exhibit positive nonlinear refraction and two-photon absorption properties as revealed by picosecond Z-scan. The increased conjugation by introducing an oxadiazole group improves the photo-isomerization rate and the nonlinear optical properties, due to a weaker intermolecular interaction and the formation of J-aggregates within AOB-t4 LB film. The third-order susceptibility of cis-AOB-t4 9-layer LB film reaches 1.866 × 10-9 esu and the two-photon absorption coefficient is on the order of 10-8 m/W. Interestingly, the 15-layer AOB-t4 LB film shows negative nonlinear refraction and saturable absorption. Taken together, we have demonstrated the switchable nonlinear optical absorption and refraction properties of AOB-t4 LB film with changing film thickness, which is of significance for nonlinear optics and photonics applications.

Abstract
A series of novel nonperipherally substituted tetra-15-crown-5-dibutoxyoxanthrenocyanines (H2, Mg, Zn), acting as chameleons with the unique properties of switchable absorption and emission in the near-infrared (NIR) spectral range have been synthesized and characterized by X-ray diffraction. The attachment of 15-crown-5-α-dibutoxyoxanthreno moieties to phthalocyanine is responsible for the high solubility of the resulting molecules and the red shift of the Q band to the NIR region and offers a unique possibility for postsynthetic modification of the optical properties of the molecules. Both aggregation of phthalocyanine and its participation in an acid-base equilibrium strongly alter their optical properties. For example, the absorption of complexes can be reversibly tuned from 686 up to 1028 nm because of the cation-induced formation of supramolecular dimers or subsequent protonation of meso-N atoms orf macrocycle, in contrast to peripherally substituted tetra-15-crown-5-phthalocyanines without oxanthrene moieties. The reversibility of these processes can be controlled by the addition of [2.2.2]cryptand or amines. All investigated compounds exhibit fluorescence with moderate quantum yield, which can also be switched between the ON and OFF states by the action of similar agents.

A novel subPc–AB–subPc triad exhibits on–off switching of the fluorescence emission intensity upon reversible trans ↔ cis photoisomerization of the azobenzene moiety. NMR spectroscopy provides additional evidence for the conformational change.

Abstract
In continuation of our work on glycoconjugated phthalocyanines, two new water soluble, non-ionic zinc(II) phthalocyanines have been prepared and fully characterized by means of ¹H-NMR, 13C-NMR, MALDI-TOF, ESI-TOF, UV-Vis spectroscopy, emission spectroscopy and fluorescence lifetime measurements. The carbohydrate-containing phthalonitrile precursors were synthesized through a copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC). The 2-methoxyethoxymethyl protecting group (MEM) was used to protect the carbohydrate moieties. It resisted the harsh basic cyclotetramerization conditions and could be easily cleaved under mild acidic conditions. The glycoconjugated zinc(II) phthalocyanines described here have molar extinction coefficents εmax>10⁵ m(-1) cm(-1) and absorption maxima λ>680 nm, which make them attractive photosensitizers for photo-dynamic therapy.

Abstract
The optical properties of two series of azobenzene derivatives were modulated by backbone modifications with the density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Compared to the short-chain molecule, the chromophore with an elongated π-bridge exhibits a greater extent of charge transfer during one-photon excitation and hence possesses a larger molecular first hyperpolarizability (β0). Meanwhile, an evident red-shift in the maximum absorption was observed after extension of the π-conjugated backbone. The tendency of the static β0 value derived from the two-state model is consistent with the result of the calculation at M06-2X/6–311++G(d,p) level by means of analytical derivative method. The dynamic perturbations were revealed to cause the obvious enhancement of the first hyperpolarizability. The more closer the foundational wavelength to two times the value of the maximum absorption in one-photon transition, the larger βRHS value is observed for the chromophore. The nonlinear optical (NLO) properties augment with the introduction of the THF solvents by comparing the gas-phase values. With increasing the length of conjugated bridge, the dynamic βRHS value increases more rapidly in THF solution than in vacuum.

Abstract
meso-Tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) and its two substituted derivatives (meso-tetrakis(4-cyanophenyl)porphyrin [TPP(CN)4] and meso-tetrakis(4-methoxyphenyl)porphyrin [TPP(OMe)4]) were synthesized. Their nonlinear absorption and refraction properties were studied using the Z-scan technique in the picosecond (ps) and nanosecond (ns) regimes. The open aperture Z-scan results reveal that TPP and TPP(CN)4 display an identical reverse saturable absorption (RSA) character in the ps and ns regimes. While TPP(OMe)4 exhibits a transition from saturable absorption (SA) to RSA in the ps regime and a typical RSA character in the ns regime. The closed aperture Z-scan results show that TPP(CN)4 and TPP(OMe)4 have regular enhancement of the magnitude of nonlinear refraction as compared to their parent TPP in both the ps and ns regimes. In addition, the second-order molecular hyperpolarizabilities (γ) of these three porphyrins are calculated, and the γ values of TPP(CN)4 and TPP(OMe)4 are remarkable larger than that of TPP. The introduction of the electron-withdrawing group CN and the electron-donating group OMe into TPP has enhanced its nonlinear refraction and γ value, and tuned its nonlinear absorption (TPP(OMe)4), which could be useful for porphyrin-related applications based on the desired NLO properties.

Abstract
The nonlinear optical properties of a series of pyrrolic compounds consisting of BODIPY and aza-BODIPY systems are investigated using 532 nm nanosecond laser and the Z-scan technique. Results show that 3,5-distyryl extension of BODIPY to the red shifted MeO2BODIPY dye has a dramatic impact on its nonlinear absorption properties changing it from a saturable absorber to an efficient reverse saturable absorbing material with a nonlinear absorption coefficient of 4.64 × 10-10 m/W. When plotted on a concentration scale per mole of dye in solution MeO2BODIPY far outperforms the recognized zinc(II) phthalocyanine dye and is comparable to that of zinc(II) tetraphenylporphyrin.

Abstract
In this work, we report the synthesis and characterization of a novel series of porphyrins, some of them bearing donor-acceptor groups. meso-substituted free-base porphyrins:5-(4-amino-phenyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin (TPPNH2) and 5-(4-acetamidophenyl)-10,15,20-triphenylporphyrin (TPPNHAc), as well as their tribromo (Br3TPPNH2 and Br3TPPNHAc) and trimethylsilyl-substituted homologs (TMS3TPPNH2 and TMS3TPPNHAc were synthesized and characterized. The optical properties of all compounds have been studied by absorption and fluorescence spectroscopy. Theoretical calculations were performed in order to recognize the optimized geometry and the correlation with the optical properties. On the other hand, an azobenzene containing porphyrin (TPPN2PhC14H29) was also prepared to study the influence of the trans-cis photoisomerization on its optical properties. Almost all porphyrin derivatives exhibited a Soret band at ca. λ = 419–422 nm followed by four Q-bands in the range between 500–700 nm. Besides, these porphyrins showed two emission bands located at ca. λ = 654 nm and 714 nm with different intensities, depending on the substituents. The relative quantum yields were calculated for these compounds with respect to the most emissive species.

Abstract
We describe not only fleeting assembly of photoisomerizable azobenzene-based palladium complexes into microstructured crystalline architectures but also their light-responsive functions. A transformation in the crystalline morphology from two-dimensional (2D) parallelogram-like sheets to three-dimensional (3D) cuboid- or rhombus-like structures was achieved by changing the solvent from tetrahydrofuran (THF) to acetone and N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF). The sizes of the structures, ranging from a few hundred nanometers to several hundred micrometers, were also modified by varying the complex concentration. In stark contrast to the very stable 2D sheets in the THF-H2O suspensions, exposure of 3D structures in polar DMF-H2O suspensions to ultraviolet (UV) light led to fast disassembly of the structures into isolated metal complexes and further dissociation of free azobenzene ligands from the complexes. In acetone-H2O suspensions, interestingly, disassembly of 3D cuboid-like structures into isolated complex components occurred upon exposure to UV light without further dissociation of azobenzene ligands from the palladium complexes. Considering the photoisomerization ability of the azobenzene-based palladium complex in common organic solvents, the π-stacking interactions that support 3D structures are likely to be sufficiently weak that they might be broken by the UV-induced trans-to-cis isomerization in more polar solvent mixtures. As a consequence, disassembly proceeded under UV light irradiation. Moreover, the effect of solvent polarity on the UV-assisted dissociation (in DMF-H2O) may be associated with the coordination ability of solvent molecules with the metal center.

Abstract
A density functional theory study was performed to analyze the electron donor-acceptor properties of the cis and trans isomers of a novel azobenzene-containing tetraphenylporphyrin (TPPN2PhC14H29) with different substituents (Br or TMS). In general, the trans isomers are better electron acceptors than the correspondent cis homologues. Their UV-vis spectra were also obtained and a comparison with available experimental results is included. According to these results, the azo compounds reported here are promising materials for the elaboration of dye-sensitized solar cells because their HOMO-LUMO gaps are close to 2 eV. Moreover, the energy of the high intensity absorption bands also fulfills the requirements needed for the operation of a solar cell built with TiO2 and the I(-)/I3(-) pair.

Abstract
Porphyrin(Por)-spiropyran(SP) hybrid compounds, including Por-SP dyad, Por-SP2 triad, and Por-SP4 pentad, were prepared and characterized by (1)H NMR, MALDI-TOF MS and UV-Vis spectroscopies. Upon 350 nm UV irradiation of Por-SPn (n=1, 2, 4) in dichloromethane, unusual red-shifted absorption spectra were observed with the colour change from pink into green. Probably due to the protonation of core nitrogens in porphyrin ring, their absorption maxima in dichloromethane were shifted from 418 (Soret band), 515, 550, 590, 645 (four Q bands) nm into 450 and 665 nm. Also, fluorescence maxima were also shifted from 650 and 715 nm to 692 nm. In the other hands, upon irradiation with 350nm UV light in THF, the colour changed from pink into violet and absorption band at 590 nm increased and the fluorescence spectra showed the decrease of 650 and 715 nm bands and increase of 600-640 nm band, due to the normal ring-opening reaction of spiropyran moiety into merocyanine. In the dark, original absorption and fluorescence spectra were recovered very slowly in dichloromethane, but quickly in THF. The reversible photochromic reactions of Por-SPn (n=1, 2, 4) in dichloromethane and THF were investigated by observing absorption and fluorescence spectral changes during UV irradiation or standing in the dark.

Abstract
The photocontrollable J-aggregation of a diarylethene-phthalocyanine hybrid (T-ZnPc) and its aggregation-stabilized photochromic behavior were investigated by various techniques. T-ZnPc initially exhibited slight J-aggregation tendency in solvents such as chloroform and toluene through conformational planarization effect, but formed much stronger J-aggregates upon the illumination of 254 nm UV light. In darkness, the UV-irradiated solutions gradually returned to their initial state. These phenomena can be explained by the pronounced change in molecular planarity accompanying the reversible isomerization of the diarylethene units of T-ZnPc. Besides, we have found that the thermal stability of the closed-ring diarylethene isomers in molecularly dispersed T-ZnPc is much poorer than that in aggregates. As long as the aggregates were broken, they converted to corresponding open-ring form instantly. This study provided an example of fully photocontrollable aggregation of phthalocyanines and paved a new way for improving the stability of the photochromic systems.
