Ultrafast Charge Photogeneration Dynamics in Ground-State Charge-Transfer Complexes Based on Conjugated Polymers

Hot kinetic model as a guide to improve organic photovoltaic materials

The model yields that the most promising ways to increase the OSC performance are decreasing the reorganization energy, increasing the dielectric permittivity and enhancing the charge delocalization.

Ultrafast direct electron transfer at organic semiconductor and metal interfaces

The ability to control direct electron transfer can facilitate the development of new molecular electronics, light-harvesting materials, and photocatalysis. However, control of direct electron transfer has been rarely reported, and the molecular conformation-electron dynamics relationships remain unclear. We describe direct electron transfer at buried interfaces between an organic polymer semiconductor film and a gold substrate by observing the first dynamical electric field-induced vibrational sum frequency generation (VSFG). In transient electric field-induced VSFG measurements on this system, we observe dynamical responses (<150 fs) that depend on photon energy and polarization, demonstrating that electrons are directly transferred from the Fermi level of gold to the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital of organic semiconductor. Transient spectra further reveal that, although the interfaces are prepared without deliberate alignment control, a subensemble of surface molecules can adopt conformations for direct electron transfer. Density functional theory calculations support the experimental results and ascribe the observed electron transfer to a flat-lying polymer configuration in which electronic orbitals are found to be delocalized across the interface. The present observation of direct electron transfer at complex interfaces and the insights gained into the relationship between molecular conformations and electron dynamics will have implications for implementing novel direct electron transfer in energy materials.

Revelation of Interfacial Energetics in Organic Multiheterojunctions

Efficient charge generation via exciton dissociation in organic bulk heterojunctions necessitates donor-acceptor interfaces, e.g., between a conjugated polymer and a fullerene derivative. Furthermore, aggregation and corresponding structural order of polymer and fullerene domains result in energetic relaxations of molecular energy levels toward smaller energy gaps as compared to the situation for amorphous phases existing in homogeneously intermixed polymer:fullerene blends. Here it is shown that these molecular energy level shifts are reflected in interfacial charge transfer (CT) transitions and depending on the existence of disordered or ordered interfacial domains. It can be done so by systematically controlling the order at the donor-acceptor interface via ternary blending of semicrystalline and amorphous model polymers with a fullerene acceptor. These variations in interfacial domain order are probed with luminescence spectroscopy, yielding various transition energies due to activation of different recombination channels at the interface. Finally, it is shown that via this analysis the energy landscape at the organic heterojunction interface can be obtained.

Triphenylamine-Based Push-Pull Molecule for Photovoltaic Applications: From Synthesis to Ultrafast Device Photophysics

Small push-pull molecules attract much attention as prospective donor materials for organic solar cells (OSCs). By chemical engineering, it is possible to combine a number of attractive properties such as broad absorption, efficient charge separation, and vacuum and solution processabilities in a single molecule. Here we report the synthesis and early time photophysics of such a molecule, TPA-2T-DCV-Me, based on the triphenylamine (TPA) donor core and dicyanovinyl (DCV) acceptor end group connected by a thiophene bridge. Using time-resolved photoinduced absorption and photoluminescence, we demonstrate that in blends with [70]PCBM the molecule works both as an electron donor and hole acceptor, thereby allowing for two independent channels of charge generation. The charge-generation process is followed by the recombination of interfacial charge transfer states that takes place on the subnanosecond time scale as revealed by time-resolved photoluminescence and nongeminate recombination as follows from the OSC performance. Our findings demonstrate the potential of TPA-DCV-based molecules as donor materials for both solution-processed and vacuum-deposited OSCs.

Bulk heterojunction morphology of polymer:fullerene blends revealed by ultrafast spectroscopy

Morphology of organic photovoltaic bulk heterojunctions (BHJs) - a nanoscale texture of the donor and acceptor phases - is one of the key factors influencing efficiency of organic solar cells. Detailed knowledge of the morphology is hampered by the fact that it is notoriously difficult to investigate by microscopic methods. Here we all-optically track the exciton harvesting dynamics in the fullerene acceptor phase from which subdivision of the fullerene domain sizes into the mixed phase (2-15 nm) and large (>50 nm) domains is readily obtained via the Monte-Carlo simulations. These results were independently confirmed by a combination of X-ray scattering, electron and atomic-force microscopies, and time-resolved photoluminescence spectroscopy. In the large domains, the excitons are lost due to the high energy disorder while in the ordered materials the excitons are harvested with high efficiency even from the domains as large as 100 nm due to the absence of low-energy traps. Therefore, optimizing of blend nanomorphology together with increasing the material order are deemed as winning strategies in the exciton harvesting optimization.

Threshold-like complexation of conjugated polymers with small molecule acceptors in solution within the neighbor-effect model

In some donor-acceptor blends based on conjugated polymers, a pronounced charge-transfer complex (CTC) forms in the electronic ground state. In contrast to small-molecule donor-acceptor blends, the CTC concentration in polymer:acceptor solution can increase with the acceptor content in a threshold-like way. This threshold-like behavior was earlier attributed to the neighbor effect (NE) in the polymer complexation, i.e., next CTCs are preferentially formed near the existing ones; however, the NE origin is unknown. To address the factors affecting the NE, we record the optical absorption data for blends of the most studied conjugated polymers, poly(2-methoxy-5-(2-ethylhexyloxy)-1,4-phenylenevinylene) (MEH-PPV) and poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT), with electron acceptors of fluorene series, 1,8-dinitro-9,10-antraquinone (), and 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethane () in different solvents, and then analyze the data within the NE model. We have found that the NE depends on the polymer and acceptor molecular skeletons and solvent, while it does not depend on the acceptor electron affinity and polymer concentration. We conclude that the NE operates within a single macromolecule and stems from planarization of the polymer chain involved in the CTC with an acceptor molecule; as a result, the probability of further complexation with the next acceptor molecules at the adjacent repeat units increases. The steric and electronic microscopic mechanisms of NE are discussed.

Neighbor effect in complexation of a conjugated polymer

Charge-transfer complex (CTC) formation between a conjugated polymer and low-molecular-weight organic acceptor is proposed to be driven by the neighbor effect. Formation of a CTC on the polymer chain results in an increased probability of new CTC formation near the existing one. We present an analytical model for CTC distribution considering the neighbor effect, based on the principles of statistical mechanics. This model explains the experimentally observed threshold-like dependence of the CTC concentration on the acceptor content in a polymer:acceptor blend. It also allows us to evaluate binding energies of the complexes.

Acceptor-Enhanced Local Order in Conjugated Polymer Films

Disorder in conjugated polymers is a general drawback that limits their use in organic electronics. We show that an archetypical conjugated polymer, MEH-PPV, enhances its local structural and electronic order upon addition of an electronic acceptor, trinitrofluorenone (TNF). First, acceptor addition in MEH-PPV results in a highly structured XRD pattern characteristic for semicrystalline conjugated polymers. Second, the surface roughness of the MEH-PPV films increases upon small acceptor addition, implying formation of crystalline nanodomains. Third, the low-frequency Raman features of the polymer are narrowed upon TNF addition and indicate decreased inhomogeneous broadening. Finally, the photoinduced absorption and surface photovoltage spectroscopy data show that photoexcited and dark polymer intragap electronic states assigned to deep defects disappear in the blend. We relate the enhanced order to formation of a charge-transfer complex between MEH-PPV and TNF in the electronic ground state. These findings may be of high importance to control structural properties as they demonstrate an approach to increasing the order of a conjugated polymer by using an acceptor additive.

Graphene oxide-induced conformation changes of glucose oxidase studied by infrared spectroscopy

The adsorption of proteins on the surface of nanomaterials can induce changes in the structure and biological activity of the proteins. Although there have been a number of studies aimed at developing an understanding of the interactions of proteins with surfaces of nanomaterials, a detailed description of the actual state of the adsorbed proteins or the functional consequences of protein adsorption onto nanomaterials has yet to be reported. In this study, the conformation changes of glucose oxidase (GOx) induced by adsorption on graphene oxide (GO) sheets were investigated by quantitative second-derivative infrared analysis and two-dimensional infrared correlation spectroscopy (2D IR). The adsorption of GOx on GO sheets resulted in the conversion of α-helix to β-sheet structures and therefore led to substantial conformation changes of GOx, even the unfolding of the protein. These alterations in the conformation of GOx caused a significant decrease in the catalytic activity of the enzyme for glucose oxidation. This study demonstrates that nanomaterials can strongly influence the conformation and activity of adsorbed proteins. In addition to the importance of this effect in cases of the direct adsorption of proteins on nanomaterials, the results have implications for proteins adsorbed on materials with nanometer-scale surface roughness.

The role of driving energy and delocalized States for charge separation in organic semiconductors

The electron-hole pair created via photon absorption in organic photoconversion systems must overcome the Coulomb attraction to achieve long-range charge separation. We show that this process is facilitated through the formation of excited, delocalized band states. In our experiments on organic photovoltaic cells, these states were accessed for a short time (<1 picosecond) via infrared (IR) optical excitation of electron-hole pairs bound at the heterojunction. Atomistic modeling showed that the IR photons promote bound charge pairs to delocalized band states, similar to those formed just after singlet exciton dissociation, which indicates that such states act as the gateway for charge separation. Our results suggest that charge separation in efficient organic photoconversion systems occurs through hot-state charge delocalization rather than energy-gradient-driven intermolecular hopping.

Conjugated polymer-fullerene blend with strong optical limiting in the near-infrared

Optical-quality, melt processable thick films of a conjugated polymer blend containing poly(2-methoxy-5-(2-ethyl-hexyloxy)-(phenylene vinylene)) (MEH-PPV), a C(60) derivative (PCBM) and a plasticizer (1,2-di-iso-octylphthalate) have been developed and their nonlinear absorption and optical limiting properties have been investigated. These blend materials exhibited strong optical limiting characteristics in the near infrared region (750-900 nm), with broad temporal dynamic range spanning femtosecond to nanosecond pulse widths. The dispersion of the optical limiting figure-of-merit of the MEH-PPV:PCBM:DOP blend shows a peak near the wavelength of the MEH-PPV cation, indicating an important role of one-photon and two-photon induced charge transfer in the nonlinear absorption response.

Efficient two-step photogeneration of long-lived charges in ground-state charge-transfer complexes of conjugated polymer doped with fullerene

Polarization-sensitive time-resolved visible-infrared pump-probe experiments demonstrate that one can efficiently generate long-lived charges in donor-acceptor charge transfer complex (CTC) of conjugated polymer doped with fullerene, MEH-PPV/dinitroanthraquinone/C(60). In particular, a strong enhancement of the photoinduced charge generation is observed in the red part of the spectrum, i.e. inside the polymer band gap, which makes the current material attractive for photovoltaic applications. The spectroscopic results indicate that enhanced generation of charges is due to a consecutive photoinduced electron transfer from the polymer to the CTC-acceptor in the first step and then, in the second step, to the fullerene. The LUMO energy difference between the CTC-acceptor and fullerene appears to be a key parameter for efficient charge separation in these ternary systems. The results are also discussed in respect to the charge generation processes in widely used polymer-fullerene blends, where formation of weak CTCs has recently been discovered.
